Devotionals for the Heart: A Lesson Learned about God's Grace

Sufficient Grace

“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” – Hebrews 4:16 (ESV)

Growing up in church, I often heard a song by Don Moen called “Jehovah Jireh.”

In Hebrew the title means “My Provider.” It comes from Genesis 22, where Abraham took his son Isaac to be sacrificed on the altar, but God provided a ram instead because of Abraham’s faithfulness. According to Genesis 22:14 (KJV): “And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah Jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.”

Loosely translated, “God provides and sees everything.”

Lately, amid the current troubled times, I’ve been focusing on how God always provides. But it is the second verse in Moen’s song “Jehovah Jireh” that has been on repeat in my mind. The verse says, “His grace is sufficient for me.” I asked God why it was ruminating in my spirit, and He led me to recall a time when I had a personal “all is lost” moment.

It was the day of a mandatory teaching methodology class during my final semester in college. The final assignment was a 25-page paper and to be handed in inside of a red folder. So, when I walked into the class and saw red folders on everyone’s desk, I panicked. I hadn’t even started researching my paper! As a theatre major, I had been performing several nights, which had consumed me both mentally and physically. Without that paper I would not pass the class, which meant I would not be licensed as a teacher after graduation.

I quickly left the classroom and located the course instructor. He was formerly a Marine, strict to follow the rules, and the rule for a late paper meant you had to get a doctor’s note to receive a C passing grade. As I fumbled for words, he turned to me and said, “Miss Canada, you look sick today.” I started to reply, and he repeated himself. In a rare, contrary moment, he showed me mercy and I left without questioning it.

I had a solution, but I wasn’t sick, and the school clinic wasn’t giving out sick notes without symptoms. For three hours, I agonized and prayed to God over what to do, and by the time I arrived at an off-campus clinic, I was running a fever, congested, and had swollen eyes. I felt the clouds of heaven part when the clinic nurse handed me a sick note.

Now, please understand that I don’t condone lying or fraudulent cases. Yet, when I found myself in a dire, life-altering event (that I had gotten myself into) God showed me a level of grace to remind me of Hebrews 4:16 (ESV), “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” And though He is “Jehovah Jireh” it is His grace that will meet all our needs, as God says in 2 Corinthians 12:9a (ESV), “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

Rest assured, the next day I locked myself in the 24-hour campus library until my paper was done to excellence, and I still received that circled “C” with a “well done” on the title page with thanks and praise to God because His Grace will always be more than enough for me.

Are you in need of God’s grace today? Let us pray together: “Dear God, you know and see my struggle today. I need your grace that is sufficient for my weakness. Thank you for always providing for and meeting my needs, and for your loving mercy as I lay this burden down at your feet. In Jesus’s Name I pray, Amen.”

Christa MacDonald is a 2017 Carol Award finalist for contemporary Christian fiction. 

She began her writing career at the age of eleven, filling a sketchbook with poems and short stories. After publishing a few short pieces in her college’s literary magazine she took a long hiatus during which she embarked on a few different careers, got married, had three kids, and renovated an old barn masquerading as a house. 

Her most recent work, The Redemption Road, finished the Sweet River Redemption series published by Mountain Brook Ink.

When not working or writing Christa can be found ferrying her kids around, reading, or attempting something crafty. She and her family live along the coast of New England.

Why is Grace So Hard?

Key Scripture: 

Ephesians 2:8, Luke 15:11-32, Romans 6:23 (NASB) 

Maybe I’m the only one who struggles with this, but I’ve been really thinking about grace a lot. There are different facets to it. We have the grace God has granted us for the sins which would have led to our death. (Ephesians 2:8) We have grace in how we treat others. The apostle Paul is known for starting or ending his letters with, “Grace and peace to you.” There’s also grace in our demeanor. I think of that as having the Holy Spirit going before me, out to others. We talk about women who are graceful, or have grace in the way they walk or comport themselves. It’s not tied to a faith walk, but it’s still noticeable.

The grace I’ve been pondering the most lately, is the grace we are called to give to others. God’s worked on me in this over many years, and lots of areas have seen victory. Several have not, though. There has been change and growth, but I have to tell you that traffic is one of the places I have the least amount of grace in my life. I’m not quite as quick to say, “Come on, people!” as I used to be. That wake-up call came when my special needs daughter of about 5 piped up from the back, repeating the same phrase.

Why can’t I give grace in traffic? Or the grocery store when someone puts their cart in the middle of the aisle while looking at the shelves? The “me monster” of self rears its ugly head in those circumstances, and reminds me that I’ve still got a long way to go to having my flesh fully surrendered to the Spirit.

I’m a rule follower. If there is a sign that says not to touch the wet paint, I do not have the urge to put my fingers all over it. I have many friends who would find that almost irresistible! I suppose I’m the elder son in the prodigal story. (Luke 15:11-32) I do all the right things to expect a reward.

That’s not how grace works, though. Grace was given by God before I sinned even once. He accounted for the grace mankind would need long before He even formed the world. The plan of salvation was set in motion when there wasn’t even one man in the world yet. (Romans 6:23) It is a gift which was given to us freely, when we had no clue we would even need it.

How is my grace manifested? Only when people do or say what I believe they should? Am I only willing to give grace when the circumstances fit my idea of how they should be? Or, am I allowing the Holy Spirit to grow me into someone who looks more like Christ in grace and peace?

What would that look like for me? Well, I probably wouldn’t get so frustrated at the people who block the aisles or don’t use their turn signals. Maybe I would let the Spirit speak in that quiet Voice which says that I don’t know what that other person is struggling with or going through. Perhaps I would pray for them, rather than grumble about them in my mind, even while there’s a smile on my face. I likely won’t type back that comment which is a thinly veiled insult, or pass on that piece of information which no one else really needs to know I was told.

I want to be a graceFULL woman of God. I want others to see His love and peace and grace flowing through me, even in traffic. Thankfully, that’s what He wants for me, too. I’m so grateful for the grace He gives which doesn’t rely on my behavior!

Let’s pray: Heavenly Daddy, You give more abundantly than we can even fathom, and Your grace is an amazingly boundless gift. Teach me to give grace as You do. Show me more of how You’ve given it to me, and make my heart sing with gratitude so I can lavish that grace on others. In Your precious Son’s Name, Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Interview with Meghann Whistler about Falling for the Innkeeper:

Alexis: Why did you write this book?

Meghann: I wrote this book after I quit my job as the marketing communications manager at a large software company to stay at home with my three young children. I’ve always loved creative writing, but while I was working, I didn’t have the time or energy to devote to creative projects.

Once I became a stay-at-home mom, working on Falling for the Innkeeper gave me something fun to daydream about while I was changing diapers and doing the laundry!

Alexis: Who or what inspired the storyline?

Meghann: There were a lot of different things that inspired the storyline, but the biggest one was probably the setting. I grew up spending my summers on Cape Cod at my grandparents’ seaside inn, and I really wanted to go back there in my imagination.

Alexis: How did you research the setting for this story? Did you travel to Cape Cod? Why or why not?

Meghann: I started writing this book about two and half years ago, and I haven’t been back to Cape Cod since then. I do still have family there, though, and I was there for a wedding about a year before I started writing Falling for the Innkeeper.

In terms of research, I relied a lot on my memory, and I also conducted my fair share of Google searches!

Alexis: Tell us about your story’s heroine Laura Lessoway. What is she like? Describe her looks, personality and heart.

Meghann: Laura is a beautiful young woman with dark hair and green eyes. She grew up wealthy but prefers the simple things in life. She dresses casually and is a big Boston Red Sox fan!

Thanks to a close relationship with her recently deceased grandmother, Laura has a real heart for the Lord. She’s a single mom because her ex-husband cheated on her and abandoned her while she was pregnant. She’s wary about getting involved with another man—especially one who’s a lawyer like her ex-husband—so Jonathan has to work hard to win her over.

Alexis: Let’s talk about your story’s hero Jonathan Masters. What is he like? Describe his looks, character and heart.

Meghann: At the beginning of the story, Jonathan is very focused on work. He’s a good-looking guy with dark hair and dark eyes, but he made a decision back when he started law school that he wouldn’t “get distracted” by a serious relationship until he’d made partner, and he’s stuck to that resolution for almost ten years.

In addition to being hard-working, disciplined and trustworthy, Jonathan is kind and easygoing, and he has a soft spot for kids.

Alexis: Why does Laura fight to save her grandmother’s beachfront inn?

Meghann: Laura’s relationship with her parents isn’t the best, and the place where she has always felt most loved is at her grandmother’s inn. She wants to keep the inn to keep her grandmother’s legacy alive, and also to make sure that her four-year-old daughter, Emma, is able to stay in the only home she’s ever known.

Alexis: What is it about Jonathan that draws Laura to him?

Meghann: Laura works hard to fight her attraction to Jonathan because she’s nervous that he’ll turn out to be an unethical workaholic like her ex-husband, but his easygoing manner, sense of humor and fondness for her daughter draw her in.

Alexis: What is it about Laura that makes her unforgettable to Jonathan?

Meghann: Jonathan has never told anyone how hard it was to grow up with a mentally ill father, but he trusts Laura enough to tell her. Not only does she comfort him, she also immediately sets out to help Jonathan find his father, who has been missing for fifteen years. When they visit a local homeless shelter together, Jonathan sees what a kind and caring person she is, and he knows he doesn’t want to let her go.

Alexis: Paint a picture of The Sea Glass Inn. What makes it special to your characters?

Meghann: When you think about classic Cape Cod architecture, The Sea Glass Inn is basically what will come to mind! It’s two stories high with gray cedar shingles, black window shutters and a hand-painted sign with its name hanging from a wooden post out front.

It sits at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, nestled behind the dunes of a sweeping, white-sand beach on Nantucket Sound. Rosebushes grow haphazardly around a split rail cedar fence that surrounds the property. There’s a jetty at the mouth of the nearby harbor that Laura and Jonathan visit a couple of times in the book.

For Laura, the inn symbolizes her grandmother’s love. For Jonathan, it’s a place where he can relax and be his real self without all the pressure from his job weighing him down.

Alexis: What brings Laura and Jonathan together and what threatens to tear them apart?

Meghann: Jonathan’s job is what brings them together initially—he comes to the inn to make an offer on behalf of a client. But his job is also what keeps them apart, as Laura finds it difficult to trust lawyers in general, and she is also very aware that his whole purpose for staying at the inn with her and Emma is to take it away from them.

Alexis: What do you want readers to remember most about Falling for the Innkeeper?

Meghann: That when we trust God, He’ll work all things for our good. No matter what mistakes we’ve made in the past, no matter how misplaced our priorities have been, if we honestly seek Him, He can do for us what we couldn’t do for ourselves.

Alexis: If you could spend a day with any of your story’s characters, which one would you spend it with and what would you do?

Meghann: I’d spend the day with Laura’s daughter, Emma! I have three boys, so it would be fun to hang out with a little girl. I’d take her out for ice cream, which she loves, and let her go wild at the trampoline park she visits in the book!

Alexis: Complete this sentence: If I were not an author, I would be _____________________because___________________________.

Meghann: If I were not an author, I would be a counselor because I’m a great listener and I get a lot of satisfaction out of helping other people.

Alexis: Thanks for the interview! Do you have any closing comments?
