Interview with Meghann Whistler about Falling for the Innkeeper:

Alexis: Why did you write this book?

Meghann: I wrote this book after I quit my job as the marketing communications manager at a large software company to stay at home with my three young children. I’ve always loved creative writing, but while I was working, I didn’t have the time or energy to devote to creative projects.

Once I became a stay-at-home mom, working on Falling for the Innkeeper gave me something fun to daydream about while I was changing diapers and doing the laundry!

Alexis: Who or what inspired the storyline?

Meghann: There were a lot of different things that inspired the storyline, but the biggest one was probably the setting. I grew up spending my summers on Cape Cod at my grandparents’ seaside inn, and I really wanted to go back there in my imagination.

Alexis: How did you research the setting for this story? Did you travel to Cape Cod? Why or why not?

Meghann: I started writing this book about two and half years ago, and I haven’t been back to Cape Cod since then. I do still have family there, though, and I was there for a wedding about a year before I started writing Falling for the Innkeeper.

In terms of research, I relied a lot on my memory, and I also conducted my fair share of Google searches!

Alexis: Tell us about your story’s heroine Laura Lessoway. What is she like? Describe her looks, personality and heart.

Meghann: Laura is a beautiful young woman with dark hair and green eyes. She grew up wealthy but prefers the simple things in life. She dresses casually and is a big Boston Red Sox fan!

Thanks to a close relationship with her recently deceased grandmother, Laura has a real heart for the Lord. She’s a single mom because her ex-husband cheated on her and abandoned her while she was pregnant. She’s wary about getting involved with another man—especially one who’s a lawyer like her ex-husband—so Jonathan has to work hard to win her over.

Alexis: Let’s talk about your story’s hero Jonathan Masters. What is he like? Describe his looks, character and heart.

Meghann: At the beginning of the story, Jonathan is very focused on work. He’s a good-looking guy with dark hair and dark eyes, but he made a decision back when he started law school that he wouldn’t “get distracted” by a serious relationship until he’d made partner, and he’s stuck to that resolution for almost ten years.

In addition to being hard-working, disciplined and trustworthy, Jonathan is kind and easygoing, and he has a soft spot for kids.

Alexis: Why does Laura fight to save her grandmother’s beachfront inn?

Meghann: Laura’s relationship with her parents isn’t the best, and the place where she has always felt most loved is at her grandmother’s inn. She wants to keep the inn to keep her grandmother’s legacy alive, and also to make sure that her four-year-old daughter, Emma, is able to stay in the only home she’s ever known.

Alexis: What is it about Jonathan that draws Laura to him?

Meghann: Laura works hard to fight her attraction to Jonathan because she’s nervous that he’ll turn out to be an unethical workaholic like her ex-husband, but his easygoing manner, sense of humor and fondness for her daughter draw her in.

Alexis: What is it about Laura that makes her unforgettable to Jonathan?

Meghann: Jonathan has never told anyone how hard it was to grow up with a mentally ill father, but he trusts Laura enough to tell her. Not only does she comfort him, she also immediately sets out to help Jonathan find his father, who has been missing for fifteen years. When they visit a local homeless shelter together, Jonathan sees what a kind and caring person she is, and he knows he doesn’t want to let her go.

Alexis: Paint a picture of The Sea Glass Inn. What makes it special to your characters?

Meghann: When you think about classic Cape Cod architecture, The Sea Glass Inn is basically what will come to mind! It’s two stories high with gray cedar shingles, black window shutters and a hand-painted sign with its name hanging from a wooden post out front.

It sits at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, nestled behind the dunes of a sweeping, white-sand beach on Nantucket Sound. Rosebushes grow haphazardly around a split rail cedar fence that surrounds the property. There’s a jetty at the mouth of the nearby harbor that Laura and Jonathan visit a couple of times in the book.

For Laura, the inn symbolizes her grandmother’s love. For Jonathan, it’s a place where he can relax and be his real self without all the pressure from his job weighing him down.

Alexis: What brings Laura and Jonathan together and what threatens to tear them apart?

Meghann: Jonathan’s job is what brings them together initially—he comes to the inn to make an offer on behalf of a client. But his job is also what keeps them apart, as Laura finds it difficult to trust lawyers in general, and she is also very aware that his whole purpose for staying at the inn with her and Emma is to take it away from them.

Alexis: What do you want readers to remember most about Falling for the Innkeeper?

Meghann: That when we trust God, He’ll work all things for our good. No matter what mistakes we’ve made in the past, no matter how misplaced our priorities have been, if we honestly seek Him, He can do for us what we couldn’t do for ourselves.

Alexis: If you could spend a day with any of your story’s characters, which one would you spend it with and what would you do?

Meghann: I’d spend the day with Laura’s daughter, Emma! I have three boys, so it would be fun to hang out with a little girl. I’d take her out for ice cream, which she loves, and let her go wild at the trampoline park she visits in the book!

Alexis: Complete this sentence: If I were not an author, I would be _____________________because___________________________.

Meghann: If I were not an author, I would be a counselor because I’m a great listener and I get a lot of satisfaction out of helping other people.

About the Author:

Since the time she could read Nancy Drew, Cara has wanted to write mysteries. 

In 2005, she attended a book signing at her local Christian bookstore. The rest, as they say, was history. There she met a fellow Indiana writer Colleen Coble. With prompting from her husband, Cara shared her dream with Colleen. Since those infamous words, Cara’s been writing award-winning books. She is currently working on book 30 and 31.

Cara Putman is an active member of ACFW and currently serves on its Executive Board. She has also been the Indiana ACFW chapter president and served as the Area Coordinator for Indiana.

Cara is also an attorney, lecturer at a Big Ten university, active in women’s ministry, and all around crazy woman. Crazy about God, her husband and her kids that is.

Delayed Justice was a hard story to write.

I’d known from Beyond Justice that Jaime had a hard story, but I wasn’t sure exactly what it was. She tried to hide from her past. She tried hard, but in the end, it slowly spilled out. A young girl wounded deeply by someone who should protect her. And now as a professional young woman, Jaime is still fighting the shadows.

She believes she’s okay, or as okay as she’ll ever be.

Instead, she has to learn that there’s so much more waiting for her. Freedom from the chains of a past she didn’t choose. A love that will never end. And a God who has always loved her even when she questions His existence because of her past.

I think we’ve all lived that. There’s a place in our hearts that seems beyond His reach. For some of us, it’s a barrier to knowing Him. To others of us, it makes us question what we thought we knew about God. And for others of us, it presses us deeply into Him. Jaime’s book, Delayed Justice, explores this space. It's the space where some days we scream at the heavens "Where are you, God?" And the days we just curl into ourselves because life is too hard.

My Review of Delayed Justice:

This book was one wild, thought-provoking, page-turning emotional rollercoaster!

The characters were well-developed, multilayered and filled with their own issues that moved the plot forward.

As an author, Cara Putman knows how to grip the reader by the collar from the start and propel them forward through the story in a way that makes the reader feel like they are in the story and experiencing the scenes with the characters.

Delayed Justice tackles sensitive topics with tact and finesse. The ending shocked me but did not take away from the previous chapters because the entire story was well-written.

This is a good book for anyone who is seeking justice in their own real-life story.

Cozy Christmas Reads: Sharon's story

Excerpt from Sharon Srock's story "Hannah's Angel":

Terri secured the angel to a branch of the tree with its attached ribbon. She tilted her head. That’s weird too. All of the others have red or green ribbons. Why is this one white? She brushed the question aside, blew hard, and fanned it with her hand in an effort to dislodge it. Hannah’s angel fluttered but clung tight to its branch. Satisfied with its stability and confident that someone would pluck it soon—for all the good it would do them—Terri crossed to the toy store where the others waited. She surveyed the glittering stacks of potential gifts, rubbed her hands together, and grabbed a cart. “Come on. This is my favorite part.”

Hannah’s angel faded from Terri’s thoughts as she pushed the basket through narrow aisles crowded with Christmas shoppers. There were four girls and two boys on her list this year. She studied dolls and stuffed animals, tested remote control cars, and read the warnings and specifications on an assortment of skateboards before adding one to the cart. When she rounded the final counter she saw her friends huddled at the end of the checkout line.

Karla’s silver hair glinted under the florescent lights as she shook her head to a question Terri hadn’t heard. Callie’s face held a serious look of suspicion, while Pam gestured at something in Karla’s hand. Terri hurried over. “What’s wrong?” she whispered.

“I’m not sure,” Karla answered. “I was going through my notes to make sure I had everything and…” She shook her head and held out her hand to Terri. “Look what I found tucked inside my notebook.”

Terri lowered her eyes to Karla’s hand and felt her breath catch in her throat. Hannah’s angel stared up at her, ketchup stain and all. “You snuck out and picked that back off the tree.”

Karla shook her head. “That seems to be the general consensus, but”—she sketched an X across her heart—“I haven’t been out of the store.”

“Then how—?”

“Oh good grief, ladies, get a clue,” Pam said. “Someone’s playing a joke on us and we’re falling for it. Where was your notebook?”

Karla motioned to her cart. “I left it in the cart so I wouldn’t have to dig for it every time I wanted to check something off.”

“Well there you go. You know what pranksters our husbands are.” Pam waved at the bustling throng of shoppers out on the walkway. “I’ll bet they’re all four lurking out there somewhere. They saw us put the angel back on the tree and figured they had a chance to get our goats. I, for one, refuse to give them the satisfaction.” She held out her hand. “Give me that thing and watch my purse.” Pam left her basket and marched out of the store.

They watched as the angel was secured to the tree a third time. There were grins all around as Pam tugged on it and brushed against it to insure its firm attachment to the tree. Obviously satisfied, she dusted her hands together and returned to her friends. “Ok, ladies. Let’s finish up in here. We have clothing stores to visit.”

They had a formula they used for each name they drew. A toy, an outfit, and a winter coat with matching hat and gloves. Half a dozen stores later, Terri stood to the side while Callie paid for her final purchase, a purple hooded jacket for a teenage girl on her list. Callie dug in her purse. “Anyone got extra pennies. I really don’t want to break a twenty for three cents.”

Pam reached into her basket and pulled out the sweater she’d abandoned earlier. “I do. I’ve been dropping change in my pockets all afternoon. What the…” She pulled her hand out of her pocket. She had pennies all right. Pennies wrapped up in a winkled paper angel. “I don’t believe this.”

The harried sales clerk frowned as the four friends gathered around Pam.

Karla laughed. “They’re persistent, you have to give them that.”

Pam spread the angel out on the counter and pointed to the red stain on the wing. “Yep, same angel.” Her eyes roamed the crowded store and the corridor beyond. “They’re good. I haven’t seen a hint that they’re following us. Have any of you?”

Headshakes all around.

Callie plucked pennies and the angel out of Pam’s hand, paid for her purchases, and headed out of the store.

“Back to the tree?” Terri asked.

“Nope. Whoever’s doing this has had their fun, but enough is enough.” Callie paused in the middle of the walkway next to a trash can.

Terri frowned at her friend. “Callie, you can’t throw it away. Hannah—”

Author Sharon Srock went from science fiction to Christian fiction at slightly less than warp speed.

Cozy Christmas Reads: JoAnn's story

Interview with JoAnn Durgin, author of A Serendipity Christmas:

Alexis: What does your story’s title, “A Serendipity Christmas” mean? Is there a special significance for it as related to your story? Explain. 

JoAnn: Serendipity is the name of the novel’s setting, a charming small town outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The town was introduced in the first book in the series, The Christmas Challenge (released last Christmas). The word serendipity is whimsical and means “finding something valuable or delightful when you’re not looking for it and least expect it.” Isn’t that fun?

Alexis: Victoria (Tori) Harper is the female lead in this story. What is she like? Describe her looks, personality and heart. 

JoAnn: Introduced in the first book of this series (sister of Donovan Harper, the hero in The Christmas Challenge), Tori works as a paralegal in a criminal defense firm in Philadelphia (a source of concern for her family and others), but she’s taking a month of accrued/paid vacation time. After living on her own for almost a decade, she’s back in her parents’ home in Serendipity and “solid” (her term) with God. The reasons behind the move back home are gradually revealed throughout the book.

Although smart and quick with a comeback, Tori’s sarcasm hides a very tender yet wounded heart. Physically, Tori is 5’8” tall, blue-eyed with dimpled cheeks and long dark hair. After battling image and body issues when she was younger, Tori still doesn’t feel quite “worthy” in some ways. She’s not one to sit still, so she’s helping out at HarperMorgan, her brother and sister-in-law’s advertising agency in Serendipity. Donovan asks her to join the HarperMorgan team for The Christmas Challenge, but then she finds out Donovan also asked the irritatingly handsome Henry Adams to join the team…

Alexis: Henry Adams is the male lead in this story. What is he like? Describe his looks, personality and outlook on life. 

JoAnn: Henry is American, but born to English parents, so he speaks with the proper “Queen’s English” accent (think Colin Firth and Hugh Grant) and prefers calling her by her given name. He is six feet tall, athletic, with warm brown eyes and wavy dark hair. A graduate of NYU and Columbia Law School, Henry practiced for several years in a Manhattan firm. For reasons stemming from becoming a Christian, he left New York and settled in Serendipity. Although he spars with Tori, Henry’s true generosity, compassion, and gentlemanly qualities become readily apparent.

Alexis: Why is Tori resistant to Henry’s charms? 

JoAnn: After a string of failed relationships—and after her most recent boyfriend, Quint, took off for Mexico with his tattoo artist—Tori’s had a moratorium on dating for the past year. Henry had also briefly dated her now sister-in-law, Claire (the heroine in The Christmas Challenge). Tori thought of Henry as somewhat arrogant and pompous, partly because of his English formality and wry sense of humor. Now that she’s home in Serendipity for the month, and as Tori spends more time getting to know the man she’s nicknamed “Snooty Scrooge,” she discovers they have much more in common than she could have imagined. Let the fun begin!

Alexis: The Coffee Nook sounds neat. What is it like? Describe its significance. 

JoAnn: In many of my books, particularly those set in a small town, a coffee shop, café, or diner, is a central meeting place for the town’s residents—including Tori and Henry. It’s the place where everyone meets, greets, and catches up on the news from their neighbors and friends. One of the sweet senior citizens (Mary, introduced in the first book), starts a new ministry in The Coffee Nook, and you can find out what that ministry is in the book!

Alexis: What about writing this book brought joy to your heart? 

JoAnn: In many ways, writing my books is a way I dig deep into God’s word, and A Serendipity Christmas is no exception. As my characters grow and learn biblical truths in their story, I never fail to learn, as well. One of the highest compliments a reader can pay me is that she either gleans a nugget of truth or wisdom from God’s word or that she’s convicted to examine, evaluate, or change something in her own life as a result of reading my book. What a blessing!

Alexis: Did you have a holiday song playlist when writing this story? If so, share some of your favorite songs on it. 

JoAnn: Most definitely! I still listen to CDs, and I recently visited my local Lifeway store to stock up! I listen to the WOW Christmas CDs, Jordan Smith, Danny Gokey, Casting Crowns, Chris Tomlin, and many other Christian artists. Depending on what I’m writing, I sometimes prefer instrumental music, so I’ve also been listening to Lindsey Stirling’s new holiday CD, as well as the amazing Piano Guys. “O Holy Night” is one of my all-time favorite Christmas songs, and it’s featured in a pivotal moment in this novel.

Alexis: What do you want your readers to remember most about this book? 

JoAnn: There are events, often in our childhood—both good and bad—that can shape or even change our lives in some way. In recent days, these types of life events have been referred to as “watershed moments.” Many of these moments come from our relationships with our families. Forgiveness plays a large factor in Henry’s story. Feeling worthy has always been a struggle for Tori. I’d like for the stories of the two main characters to give readers hope—and isn’t the Christmas season all about hope?—that no matter where they’ve been, where they are now, and the struggles they’ve faced, God is there, He listens, and He walks beside them. Accepting that Christ paid the price for the sins of man is truly the greatest gift of all, no matter the season.

JoAnn: Thank you so much for allowing me to visit with you and your readers today, Alexis! I’ve enjoyed sharing about Tori and Henry’s story. The book is only 99 cents and releases on December 3rd. Why a Sunday, you might ask? Well, that’s my birthday, and I started a fun tradition last year with The Christmas Challenge (also only 99 cents!) of releasing a Christmas-themed, full-length novel on that day as my holiday gift to readers (although they can be read at any point in the year!).
