Devotionals for the Heart: When the birds of the desert sing praise to God

The Dawn Chorus

“Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”

—Matthew 6:26 (ESV)

This morning, my heart was touched by the Sonoran Desert’s fusion of colors and textures. I’ve lived here all my adult life, and it never ceases to amaze me.

If you’re unfamiliar with the desert, you might think it’s a desolate place filled with sand, cacti, and minimal vegetation. You would be right about the sand and cacti, but the desert offers much more. It’s a place of diversity, with Palo Verde trees, palms, and the grandeur of the saguaro cactus. Snow-capped mountains tower in the distance, and green velvet mesquite shrubs along the trails tell a story of God’s majesty and creativity.

What I love most about living here is the daily announcement of God’s morning mercies. Just before dawn, the chorus begins. The sun peaks over the tangerine horizon, and the birds of the desert sing praise for this glorious day. I close my eyes and listen. Joy fills their melody and washes over my soul. Oh, how I wish you could hear their song as they thank our Heavenly Father (God) for another day and all the possibilities it will reveal.

Even though the birds don’t make plans, God’s care for them is never-ending, and with each sunrise, they express their gratitude in song. If God cares for these magnificent creatures of the air, I can’t begin to fathom how much more God values us. We can learn something from the birds that soar effortlessly through the skies. Just like us, they don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but they seem genuinely surprised when the sun comes up, greeting each new sunrise as if it were the first they’ve seen.

Our God is a God of wonders, and His love encircles us with tender mercies. It’s astounding how many of His bounties escape my notice. The sun rises each morning and sets each evening. He holds the planets in orbit, and gravity keeps our feet on the ground. He created the stars in the sky (those in our view and beyond) and knows each of their names. This stirs my heart, and I ponder how many of God’s wonders have I neglected to see.

No one knows what today, tomorrow, or the day after will bring. But we can lift our voices and join the chorus with grateful hearts. God cares for the birds of the air and supplies their food. Yet, we are even more valuable to Him. When I hear these birds each morning, my entire being shifts into a posture of praise. Take care to listen to these fantastic creatures of the sky. Be still before the Lord, give thanks, and watch what He will do.

Let’s Pray:

Dear Heavenly Father,

You are the God of wonders! Help us to wake up each morning with a holy expectancy of what this day will bring. Teach us how to listen to these fantastic creatures of the sky. Help us to be still before You, thank You with a grateful heart then imagine the possibilities. Thank You, God, that your love for humankind is everlasting. Help us to fully embrace every new day with exuberance. Help us to praise You because your love has no boundaries and your grace is never ending. Praise be to God! In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: How to rise above the troubles of this world

You Have Wings

“By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.”—2 Peter 1:3 (NLT)

My college roommates and I usually stay in touch by viewing each others’ posts on social media. Sometimes the posts are photos of family and friends, a weekend trip, or a fun vacation. Other times, the posts include words of wisdom or a humorous meme. Whatever it may be, we are sure to read each one and add our own comments to the post.

Recently, I read one of my college roommate’s posts that received some attention from other viewers. The post was: “To all of the geese and seagulls I see dead in the street…YOU HAVE WINGS!” In other words, it’s difficult to understand why a bird would get struck by a vehicle, when a bird has the ability to avoid the vehicle by flying high above or far away from the vehicle. In this case, didn’t the birds know they had wings? Didn’t the birds know that wings are their superpower to escape whatever comes their way? Some people agreed with the post and some laughed at it. As for me, the post caused me to stop in my tracks and think about the underlying meaning.

God has given us everything we need to live a godly life and He has provided us with precious promises so that we can partake in everything He has in store for us. (2 Peter 1:3-11). But are we using those qualities and promises to better ourselves and others?

For the times when you feel like the walls are closing in on you, and the trials of this life are too great to handle, remember that this world may offer tribulation, but God has overcome the world (John 16:33). You have wings!

Perhaps you are tempted by an addiction or a habit that you cannot seem to break. Remember that there is no temptation beyond what you can bear, and God will provide a way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13). You have wings!

When you feel unnoticed, alone, dejected, and unloved, remember that God loves you with an everlasting love and nothing can ever separate you from that love (Romans 8:35-39). You have wings!

In times of uncertainty, when you start to doubt your purpose and you wonder if your dreams will ever come to fruition, remember that God will finish the good work that He has already started in you (Philippians 1:6). You have wings!

God did not leave you here on Earth to fend for yourself. He is right there with you, especially when you feel helpless and hopeless. God has equipped you with what you need to succeed in this life. He promises to be your help and to restore your hope.

Just like those birds in my college roommate’s post, God has given us wings and He expects us to fly! Let’s make a commitment to use our wings and rise above the troubles of this world.

Let’s Pray: Father God, we thank You for granting us access to the qualities that will get us successfully through this life. Help us to honor You in all that we do by allowing You to use us to our fullest potential, as we lean on You and Your promises. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: A lesson on persistence taught by a cardinal (bird)

I’m trying to decide if the cardinal that taps constantly at my window is a good role model or a pest. Is his persistence a sign of strong character, or is he just plain old stubborn?

A little bit of background here … Our house backs to a tree line full of gold finches, Carolina wrens, robins, and cardinals. The birds are beautiful, but in the spring, the male cardinals compete for territory. One particular bird claimed the small tree outside of our den. When he sees his reflection in the window, he thinks it’s another cardinal and tries to chase it off. This has been going on since last May, and he’s hit the window about ten thousand times now.

We’ve tried everything to get him to stop: pulling the blinds, opening the blinds, hanging up dangling ribbons, non-reflective stickers, etc. But nothing works. This bird is unstoppable!

After weeks of being annoyed by the on-and-off tapping, I’ve come to admire him. His goal might not be Biblical, but his behavior models a powerful parable from Luke 11:5-8 (NIV):

Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.

Shameless persistence … My cardinal friend models that behavior perfectly. I admire him for it, and am challenged to be more consistent in my prayer life, serving others, and all the things we want to do as Christians that sometimes fall by the wayside.

Mr. Cardinal is an excellent role model in that regard, but frankly, he’s knocking on the wrong door (or window in this case). My husband and I don’t have the power to give him what he needs. All his effort is most likely giving him a sore beak. He reminds me of myself here, pushing hard at something in my own strength instead of leaning fully on God.

I’m so grateful that as human beings, we worship a God who does have the power to move mightily in our lives. Read about His promise in Luke 11:9-10 (NIV):

“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

Not only is Mr. Cardinal a role model for commitment, he’s also part of God’s beautiful creation.

So here’s to knocking on the right door, loving God, and living for Him with persistence.

Devotionals for the Heart: Serving God with ALL that you have to give

How Much Do I Have?

Nothing else in the house moved as I stumbled up the hall. I stood half asleep at my kitchen sink. Looking through half-closed blinds, I discovered what had interrupted my predawn sleep. On the deck, several pesky blue jays perched atop my patio table, ready to welcome a new day. Aggravated at them for disturbing me, I pecked impatiently on a window pane. With much fluttering, the birds scattered to nearby trees. All but one.

The lone bird pranced around the table top, tilting his head this way and that, beady black eyes searching for his would-be attacker. I raised the mini blind and pecked fiercely on the glass again. There! He looked my way—he’d found me. He stared at me; I glared at him. Appearing to know my threatening noises couldn’t harm him, he didn’t budge.

Then the concert began, his music as crisp and crystal clear as the day’s spring morning. Each warble imitated his previous one.

Each time he chirped, the little bird quivered from the black collar across his throat to the trembling tip of his brilliant blue tail feathers. Every inch of the bird moved to produce his melody.

This little bird put all his body behind each note—he gave it all he had. I forgot the blue jay’s peskiness, enjoying instead my private recital.

Watching from my quiet kitchen, I thought about the tremendous effort the little bird displayed. He certainly didn’t go about his singing in a halfhearted way.

I wondered if Christians could measure up to the blue jay. Are we as committed with our efforts of praise and worship?

I recalled some of Jesus’ examples. I remembered the widow who placed only two coins in the temple treasury as her offering (Mark 12:41-44). Compared to the rich who put in much, the widow’s gift pleased Jesus, for He said she “put in everything—all she had to live on” (Mark 12:44, NIV).

I remembered when Jesus fed the five thousand with only five barley loaves and two fish (John 6:5-14). The bread and fish belonged to a boy in the crowd. Apparently, it was all the food he had, but it proved sufficient for Jesus’ purpose.

Then I pondered, “How much have I given? Have much do I have?”

It makes no difference how much we have. Jesus demands our all when we accept Him as our Savior and Lord. Jesus answered the questioning Pharisees, saying the first and greatest commandment is “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37, NIV).

All we have. We must give all we have to love and serve God. Whether in our jobs, raising our children, church work or leisure time, God demands from Christian a 100 percent effort.

Like the little blue jay on my deck with only one song to sing, we must give it all we’ve got.
