Devotionals for the Heart: Who you can turn to when life is overwhelming

God is Mighty to Save Us

A devotional by Dr. Gladys Childs

“The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love, he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”—Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV)

Sometimes, life feels heavy. The weight can be overwhelming, whether it's the pressure of responsibilities, struggles we didn't see coming, or just feeling like we're not enough. But Zephaniah 3:17 gives us a different perspective—one where God steps in as both a powerful defender and a loving Father.

Think about this for a second: God, the Creator of the universe, not only saves us from trouble but delights in us. He rejoices over us with singing. That kind of love goes far beyond what we usually imagine. We might think God tolerates or is disappointed with our shortcomings, but this verse tells a different story. God sees us, loves us deeply, and finds joy in who we are, even when we don't feel worthy.

It's hard to grasp sometimes. We're used to conditional love—love based on performance, behavior, or how well we “measure up”. But God's love doesn't work like that. He's not distant or detached; He's right here with us as a "Mighty Warrior" who fights for us, saves us, and sings over us with joy. The next time we feel weighed down by the struggles of life, remember that God is with us, loving us every step of the way.

Here are some practical steps to help you during times of struggle:

Step One: Take Time to Be Still.
In the middle of the chaos, pause. Take a few minutes each day to sit quietly and be in God's presence. You don't have to do, say, or prove anything. Just let the truth sink in: God delights in you, and He is with you right now. It might initially feel strange, but this practice can be a powerful reminder that you're not alone.

Step Two: Lean on God's Strength, Not Yours. When you're facing something difficult, remember that you don't have to handle it on your own. God is described as a "Mighty Warrior" for a reason—He's strong enough to fight the battles that overwhelm you. Pray for His strength and trust that He's working for you, even when you can't see it.

Step Three: Practice Receiving Love. This might sound simple, but for many of us, it's hard. We're used to striving, trying to earn approval, or feeling like we're never quite enough. Today, take a deep breath and allow yourself to receive God's love as it is—free, unconditional, and overflowing. Remind yourself throughout the day: “God loves me right now, just as I am.”

Reflection Questions:

1. Is there a situation where you feel like God is distant or uninterested? How does knowing that He is with you and rejoicing over you change the way you see that situation?

2. What might it look like to fully embrace God's love for you without trying to earn it or feeling like you must prove yourself?

Let’s Pray: Dear Lord, thank You for being a Mighty Warrior who saves and a loving Father who delights in me. Sometimes, believing that You rejoice over me is hard, but I trust Your Word. Help me to rest in Your love, lean on Your strength, and stop striving to earn what You freely give. Let me experience the joy and peace of knowing that You are always with me, even in the most challenging moments. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Thankful Thursday: Earth is NOT Our Home

It's Thursday and I'm thankful that Earth is NOT our home.

"Why?" You may ask. Allow me to explain.

I don't think you have to look far these days to see signs of trouble. It's clear that with the state of the world and human affairs today, life is getting more complicated and more unpredictable. Mother Nature is having mood swings (hot weather in months that are supposed to be cold, cold weather in months that are supposed to be hot) and people are getting more comfortable with disrespecting each other. It's sad.

Lately, I've realized that I've been so busy trying to establish myself as a career professional and secure a place for me in this world that I've forgotten one Bible based truth: Earth is NOT our home.

So where is our home? If you're a believer in God and a follower of Jesus Christ then you know that Heaven is our true home. As Christians, we are just passing through which is why God advises us in His Word (The Holy Bible) to not get too comfortable here on this planet Earth.

According to The Message Bible, God advises us, "Friends, this world is not your home, so don’t make yourselves cozy in it. Don’t indulge your ego at the expense of your soul. Live an exemplary life among the natives so that your actions will refute their prejudices. Then they’ll be won over to God’s side and be there to join in the celebration when he arrives" (1 Peter 2:11-12, MSG).

I love the Bible book of Hebrews, especially Chapter 11 of Hebrews. I call it “The Faith Chapter” because it shows us how our spiritual forefathers like Abraham followed God without question. They had full faith in where He was leading. Abraham literally packed his bags and took his family on a journey to a destination unknown just because God said, “Go.”

I want to have the faith of father Abraham to the point where my life is summed up simply as, “God sent, she went!” I want to follow Him to the ends of the Earth. I want to serve Him with all of my heart and be a willing and true vessel for His purpose. I want to be one of His servants who He uses as an instrument of His peace. I want to, as St. Francis of Assisi said, be used as an instrument of God’s peace. Honestly, in our modern times on this Earth, I think it is a prayer that every Christ-follower should pray to God.

Let’s read St. Francis’ prayer. He said: “Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.”

A lot of times when life on Earth makes me overwhelmed, discouraged or too depressed to pray, I ask God-fearing friends to pray for me. One of those friends is an older lady who wakes up early in the morning every day to pray for everyone on her prayer list. Recently, I reached out to her in my distress and her answer to me was simple. She told me, “Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus Christ.” And honestly, it upset me because it felt like she was bypassing my pain with Bible-based advice and for the rest of the day, I silently stewed, thinking that she doesn’t know what I’m dealing with or she wouldn’t say that to me. I’m hurt! I’m in pain! I’m overwhelmed! I’m oppressed and depressed and THIS is what she tells me? BUT God started working on my heart and I realized that though her advice seemed simple, it was the perfect answer because only God can give me perfect peace.

It’s like this song by Laura Story:

So my dear friends, as this world gets crazier and the weather becomes more unpredictable and you’re feeling too overwhelmed to function, keep your eyes on Jesus Christ because only He can give you perfect peace.

Please remember that if you believe in the Creator of the Universe (God), Earth is NOT our home. We are, like our spiritual forefathers mentioned in The Faith Chapter, “waiting for the city with permanent foundations, whose architect and builder is God” (Hebrews 11:10, ISV).

Heaven is our home. It’s a place free of sin and sorrow. No more death, depression, oppression, despair, injustice or inequities. The day is coming when God will make everything right. Until then, let us as my prayer warrior church friend says, “Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.”

God bless you!

Love,

Alexis

Thankful Thursday: My birthday and other reasons to celebrate

Today is my birthday!

I am SO thankful to God for allowing me to make it through another year!

As you know, everything you have can be gone in a split second through the loss of your own life or a natural disaster such as the tornado that stormed through Oklahoma City on Monday, leaving desolation to property and devastation to hearts of the residents who live there.

The Bible tells us not to worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will “worry about itself” and each day has enough trouble of its own (Matthew 6:34).
So each and every day that I wake up in the morning and make it through the day and sleep peacefully through the night I am thankful because you just never know what can happen.

Another reason to celebrate is inspired by this song, “Indescribable” which was first written and composed by Laura Story, originally performed by Chris Tomlin but my absolute favorite version of the song is performed by Kierra Sheard! The reason to celebrate is found within the t
he song's lyrics which praise God for being so wonderful. The lesson point is that no matter how often we mess up, God is still there to pick us up and will forgive us if we ask for forgiveness, repent and turn away from our sin(s). I love the line in the song that says God sees the DEPTHS of our HEARTS and LOVES US THE SAME! Now that’s beautiful. God sees the UGLY in us and YET He still loves us. Despite of us, God still shows us that there is HOPE.  The love, grace and mercy of God can transform us from the worst condition, restoring us from our broken sinful position and remaking us into who He has called us to be in this life.

Now if that’s not something to celebrate EVERY DAY, not just on my birthday LOL, then I don’t know what else is worthy of such gratitude!

So here’s to ME on my birthday and here’s to YOU who God sees and loves unconditionally EVERY DAY!
