Devotionals for the Heart: How to trust God in every situation

Trusting the Known God in Unknown Situations
A devotional by Dr. LaVonda McCullough

“Casting all your cares [all your anxieties, all your worries, and all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares about you [with deepest affection, and watches over you very carefully].”—1 Peter 5:7 (AMP)

Have you ever gotten a call or email requesting intercessory prayer?

Just last week, I received one. Hearing the voice of a worried single mother, anxious about an upcoming PCS (permanent change of station for military families), I could relate deeply to her feelings. As a wife and mother, I have gone through similar situations many times while managing our family's journey through my husband's military duties.

Being a planner by nature, I prefer to know all the specifics before I embark on finding schools, securing housing, and settling in. The uncertainty often leaves me feeling uneasy. This lack of clarity resulted in stress and tension, leading to sleepless nights and a burdened heart. In the midst of it all, I overlooked God’s guidance.

Does this resonate with you? Have you attempted to manage everything on your own without relying on God?

As I listened to her worries, I softly encouraged her to find trust in God through Scripture. God desires to illuminate our path when we seek His guidance. The Holy Spirit leads us toward truth. Even when the way seems obscure, a moment of quiet prayer allows Him to communicate with us. God will provide peace beyond comprehension.

We build trust and familiarity with someone by spending time with them. God wants you to encounter Him so that your reliance on Him is unwavering. You don't need to see or understand everything; instead, place your trust in Him for all matters. He knows the plans He has for your life and will position you perfectly for growth in every season.

Friend, take a moment to PRAY: Praise, Repent, Accept, and Yield!

God wants to relieve your heart of its burdens. Our connection with God should be so close that faith and surrender happen effortlessly—similar to the act of breathing. We inhale and exhale instinctively—a divine design granted to us by God. While it may be easier said than done in a world filled with unpredictability, God's promises remain true and impactful.

God says in Isaiah 55:11 (AMP), “So will My word be which goes out of My mouth; it will not return to Me void (useless, without result), without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.” Take a moment today to inhale God's peace and exhale your worries about the future. Pray and place your trust in Him today. Our Heavenly Father desires a heart that fully surrenders and confides in Him.

Let’s Pray: God, thank You for being our rock and refuge, the One we can always trust. Your faithfulness never wavers, and Your love surrounds us each day. We are grateful that we can cast all our cares upon You, knowing that You care for us deeply. Thank You for guiding us, for Your wisdom, and for Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Help us to trust You more each day and to rest in the assurance that Your plans for us are good. We praise You for being a constant source of comfort and strength in our lives. In Jesus's Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: How to let the joy of the Lord be your strength

Embracing Joy When It Seems Impossible
A devotional by Dr. LaVonda McCullough

Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”—Nehemiah 8:10 (ESV)

Have you ever faced a setback or disappointment in your life?

The journey to joy can be long and complicated, but with time, effort, and patience, you will achieve it. We all seek true joy in our lives, yet sometimes it feels elusive. Joy and contentment stem from knowing our purpose and living it out. However, life’s challenges can obscure that sense of joy. I have learned that overcoming obstacles is essential to discovering true joy.

Facing emotional hurdles can be a challenge when looked at from a personal perspective. It is when we look from God’s point of view that we are able to encounter peace and put trust in God. Our complicated feelings are normal and shouldn’t be suppressed, but embraced while we cast our cares upon Jesus Christ knowing that He can and will help us navigate our paths.

Keeping the faith when our daughter faced health issues and the school accused me of poor parenting, tested my faith once again. This hurdle, although temporary, did not define my worth or ability to parent effectively, but it caused my faith to waver.
I cried, “Where are you God?” I vowed to remain focused on believing God for a miraculous healing of my daughter. I worked hard to maintain a positive outlook and stand strong. With this renewed faith, I soon began to recognize the difference between happiness and joy.

God changed the situation and restored her health. My daughter’s kidney failure was healed, and all bloodwork soon balanced. She returned to school with little disruption from the routine. This experience served as a witness to God’s healing power.

Understanding Joy

Joy isn't dictated by external circumstances; it’s a state of being that comes from within. Achieving joy involves transforming your mind. Learn to relax, avoid worrying about the future, and be kind to yourself. Realize that you are valuable and important. Forgive yourself for past mistakes, keep a gratitude journal, and focus on the good in your life.

Living a Joy-Filled Life

A joy-filled life is one of peace, positivity, and faith. If I had continued to focus on the numerous doctor’s appointments and the hours spent doing iron transfusions, my mind would have stayed in a negative state with hope for a future. However, when I started using affirmations from the Bible, it boosted my confidence and growth spiritually. While family, friends, and career can bring happiness, the peace of God surpasses all. Balancing these aspects of your life will improve your life.

Finding joy also involves knowing your true identity that is found in Jesus Christ. In difficult times, build your faith and trust in God. Trusting Him doesn’t mean you won’t face hardships, but it assures you that He is always with you. Don’t let your faith waver. Turn to God in prayer.

Be patient and gracious with yourself. Don’t give up when things get tough. The joy you seek is just beyond these obstacles. By persevering, you will find that joy is indeed attainable. Life is a journey. Take care of your health and practice self-care to withstand the emotional hurdles that come your way. Embrace joy, keep your faith, and know that you can overcome any challenge that life presents.

“The joy of the Lord is our strength” Bible promise is brought to fullness when we accept God’s provision of righteousness by grace that reunites us so we can enjoy His presence. Joy should be pursued at all costs in developing an intimate relationship with God. What appears on the surface and what we see with your visual eyes can be the enemy distracting us from God’s best in our life. If we hold fast to the truths that are given to us in the Bible, we will have strength that reaches the depths of or souls.

Let’s Pray: Gracious Lord, thank you for being a faithful God who never leaves nor forsakes us. I praise you for strengthening me when I feel weak. Please help me to focus on You and not allow distractions to remove Your peace. May the joy of salvation rule within my heart today and forever. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Finding Faith and Joy in Every Season

Embracing Faith and Finding Joy in Every Season

A devotional by Dr. LaVonda McCullough

“Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life. You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes; with your right hand, you save me."–Psalm 138:7 (NIV)

Has your faith ever wavered?

Perhaps joy seems elusive, slipping through your fingers even though you long for the joy God promises. There have been days that I have felt the same way.

Building faith and discovering joy is a journey, one we embark on with small steps each day. Discovering joy with life's challenges is genuine and attainable. The Holy Bible assures us that joy is found in the presence of God, even during difficult times. Trusting in God's guidance, we find safety and comfort, no matter the challenges we face. Therefore, let’s celebrate the joy found in God's presence, confident that He is always with us, guiding and supporting us through every moment.

Through His boundless love and grace, we can experience joy in all circumstances. When I began to internalize these principles and let them transform me, I found peace. I learned how to connect my head knowledge with my heart. Joy could not be sustained if it was always based on my situation or circumstances.

It’s not always easy to be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, or faithful in prayer, but embodying these qualities changes our lives profoundly. In tough times, building your faith and trust in God is crucial. Trusting God doesn’t mean you’ll never face difficulties, but it does mean He will always be with you. When your faith feels shaky, turn to God and seek His help.

There are many ways to strengthen your faith during challenging times. Here’s a shortlist:

1. Spend Time with God: Engage in reading the Bible, praying, and worshipping Him. This daily practice anchors your soul.

2. Serve Others: Acts of service are beautiful reminders of God's love and His call for us to help those in need.

3. Connect with a Faith Community:
Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share your faith, drawing strength and encouragement from their support.

4. Gratitude: Become intentional to write down things you are grateful for daily.

If you're struggling to trust God, remember that He is always faithful. He loves you deeply and desires the best for you. Don’t give up on Him; keep seeking His will for your life. Trusting in God is essential for a fulfilling life. Hold on to your faith tightly, believing that God will carry you through any challenge.

In every moment, let us walk with faith, celebrate God's presence, and embrace the joy He offers, confident that He preserves our lives and guides us with His loving hand.

Let’s Pray: Father God, when my heart feels sad and my faith wavers, please grant me your peace. Help me to meditate on Your Word so that it is hidden in my heart, strengthening my faith. May I be an instrument of love that will point others to you and embrace the joy of my salvation. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: When the Love of Christ Calls You to Surrender

Surrendering to the Love of Christ
A devotional by Dr. LaVonda McCullough

"It's not good to eat too much honey, and it's not good to seek honors for yourself."
—Proverbs 25:27 (NLT)

Have you ever found yourself craving the spotlight, yearning for acknowledgment for your efforts? I have found myself in moments of serving that I needed to pause and ask God to search my heart.

This human inclination can happen to anyone, but it often leads to emptiness rather than contentment. In the quiet whispers of our hearts, it's easy to slip into the allure of seeking recognition and praise for our deeds. Yet, as the Bible book of Proverbs wisely reminds us, true fulfillment doesn’t come from self-promotion or the pursuit of personal glory.

Joy is found in selfless service, in extending kindness without expectation of reward. I am reminded of the example set by Jesus Christ. His life was a testament to sacrificial love, a model of giving without reservation. When we emulate His spirit of generosity, we unlock unforeseen blessings that enrich not only our own lives but also the lives of those around us.

In our journey of faith, it's vital to remember that it's not about accumulating personal accolades or pursuing selfish ambitions. Rather, it's about embracing humility and allowing the love of Christ to flow through us, touching hearts and transforming lives.

Reflect on moments when you've been tempted to assert control or claim undue credit. Perhaps you've experienced the sting of disappointment when recognition didn't come as expected. In those instances, it's crucial to realign our perspective and relinquish the need for validation.

I recall planning one of my RefresHER retreats, they had gone smoothly and flowed easily with each yearly preparation. The time for preparing for what I wanted to do began to cause me anxiety and frustration. I had people asking when the registration would be ready so they could save their space. Each retreat is intimate and in a secluded location with limited spaces. The retreats were always Holy Spirit inspired, but God had no given instructions.

I kept asking God, “What’s the theme, what’s the scripture?” Silence followed with no answer. God had not given instructions. I wanted my friends and members of my IMPACT Community satisfied and not upset with my leadership. My heart posture had changed. Were my motives pure this time? Did God tell me to do this retreat or was I trying to please others?

I paused and spent time praying and fasting. It was then that I received clarity. God’s agenda was different from my agenda. I was trying to stick to a timetable that God had not ordained. I was out of order and repented. My will must be aligned with God’s will.

Seasons change and unless God has given divine instructions, I realized that I could not always know exact dates that the RefresHER Retreats would occur. Obedience to God’s plan would always be paramount for when He says, “Take my daughters away. They need to hear from me.” That was what we spoke for the first one and I trust His guidance not my “feelings” to know how each retreat is held.

Remember:
True unity is found in selfless collaboration, not in individual agendas or desires for prominence. Just as each instrument in an orchestra contributes to the symphony's harmony, so too are we called to play our part in the grand tapestry of God's Kingdom.

I encourage you to let go of the illusion of self-importance and embrace the beauty of collective endeavor. Cultivate a spirit of patience and grace, allowing yourself to be molded by the loving hands of the Master Potter (God). In His gentle care, our imperfections are refined, and we emerge as radiant vessels of His grace.

As you continue your journey, may you find solace in knowing that your worth is not measured by earthly recognition, but by the boundless love of your Heavenly Father. Surrender to His embrace, and let His love guide your every step. For in Him alone will you find true fulfillment and everlasting joy.

Let’s Pray:
Dear God, Thank You for allowing me to be a vessel used by You to touch the lives of others. Examine my heart and remove any impure thoughts or motives that point to me and not give You glory. I surrender my life and my life to You. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Witnessing the majesty of God's creation

Summit of Faith: Finding God’s Faithfulness in the Waiting
A devotional by Dr. LaVonda McCullough

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
—Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)

There’s immense power in waiting when our faith rests in God.

Today unfolded like any other day, yet with a spark of hope for a day of rest during our vacation. The Zugspitze, the country of Germany’s highest peak, had eluded us despite multiple visits to the area. Clouds and rain had consistently obscured our view, making the journey seem futile. But today, a glimmer of hope emerged as I approached the counter to inquire about Zugspitze's visibility. To my astonishment, today was perfect for the trip. With directions in hand, anticipation surged within me as I prepared for the visit.

Micah (my husband) and I couldn't contain our excitement. After years of waiting, the moment had finally arrived to ascend to the summit and witness the majesty of God’s creation. I knew that view would remind me of Psalm 27:4 (NIV), which says, “One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.”

Boarding the Sky Lift just in time, we ascended to 2,962 meters—the culmination of our patience and trust. As I gazed out from the Sky Lift, memories flooded my mind of previous failed attempts. But today, a resounding message echoed within me: Don’t give up! Keep trusting God. Life’s hurdles, from job loss to health struggles, had tested us over the past six years. Yet, these challenges had a purpose—they prepared us for the blessings ahead. In the breathtaking vistas atop Zugspitze, I felt God’s presence. Tears welled in my eyes as His faithfulness enveloped me, lifting the weight of past grievances and fears.

On the ninth day of April 2019, as I stood at Germany’s highest peak, I found release and reconciliation. God’s miraculous interventions flooded my thoughts—healing, restoration, and provision beyond measure. Are you weary, carrying a heavy burden? God desires to lift the heaviness of your heart. You can lay your burdens at his feet.

What are you waiting for today? Trust in God, for His timing is perfect, and His promises never fail. May this day be a testament to the power of faith and patience, reminding us that even in the waiting, God is working wonders beyond our comprehension.

Let’s Pray: Gracious Lord, thank You for your faithfulness to answer our prayers and the desires of our heart. As we stand before You today, we are filled with gratitude for Your faithfulness and provision in our lives. We thank You for the journey You have led us on, even during trials and waiting. We surrender our hearts to You completely. Lift the heaviness within us and fill us with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Just as You granted me the opportunity to ascend to the highest peak, You also promise to lead Your children to the mountaintops of Your presence. Help us to trust in Your plan, knowing that You are always working for our good. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Embracing God's purpose for your real life story

Embracing God's Purpose: A Journey from Overwhelm to Alignment
A devotional by Dr. LaVonda McCullough

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”—1 John 1:9 (NIV)

As I stepped into the New Year, I eagerly embarked on a journey to accomplish all the goals I had meticulously set for myself. Picture a horse at the starting gate, ready to burst forth into the race.

However, the enthusiasm soon gave way to overwhelming challenges, and I found myself grappling with obstacles that seemed insurmountable. It was in these moments that a profound realization dawned upon me: the goals I had set were not in alignment with God’s purpose.

Godly goals, like that to a river flowing smoothly, work through us effortlessly. Attempting to forge ahead in my own strength led to exhaustion and mental distress.

God teaches us the importance of keeping Him first in all our endeavors, seeking His guidance when we feel lost. I discovered the weight on my chest and the incessant thoughts racing through my mind as I navigated each day, desperately trying to stay afloat.

The peace I anticipated with every small accomplishment remained elusive, replaced by setbacks and a constant feeling of inadequacy. In my heart, I knew this wasn't the life God desired for me. I began to question my faith and continued to perform tirelessly, believing I need to earn God's love. It was then that I encountered a fundamental truth: His love is unconditional. I had allowed my actions to transform sharing Jesus Christ into a burdensome duty rather than an act of genuine worship.

My heart ached with disappointment as I acknowledged the choices I made, decisions driven not by God's guidance but by external influences. I stood at the crossroads, realizing the need to repent and accept God's forgiveness. It was time to extend that same forgiveness to myself.

The posture of my heart was misaligned with God's purpose and plan. The burning questions lingered: How could I change? What steps did I need to take?

In a moment of reflection, I paused and offered a prayer of repentance. I confessed my sins, recognizing my weakness and surrendering my burdens to the One capable of shouldering them. I acknowledged that my strength alone was insufficient, but that God’s grace is sufficient.

This pivotal moment marked the beginning of a transformative journey. I sought solace in God's unconditional love, a love that doesn't demand perfection but embraces the imperfect. As I immersed myself in prayer and reflection, clarity began to unfold.

I understood that aligning with God's will requires a daily commitment to seeking His guidance. It involves relinquishing control and trusting in His wisdom. The burdens that once felt overwhelming were replaced with a sense of purpose and a newfound understanding of His plan for my life.

Forgiveness played a crucial role in this process as I learned to forgive others and forgive myself. God's forgiveness was what I needed for my soul, healing the wounds caused by misplaced priorities and misguided choices. The journey from overwhelm to alignment was not an instant fix but a gradual unfolding of grace.

As I embraced God's forgiveness, I learned to forgive myself. I realized that dwelling on past mistakes hindered my progress. Instead, I chose to focus on the present and the future, trusting that God's grace would guide me in making better choices.

The transformation wasn't about perfection but about surrender—surrendering my plans, my mistakes, and my inadequacies to a God who loves me unconditionally. With each surrendered moment, I felt the gentle guidance of the Holy Spirit, redirecting my path towards alignment with His divine will.

In this journey of overcoming overwhelm and realigning with God's purpose, I discovered the beauty of a life grounded in His love and forgiveness. It's a daily choice to seek Him, to trust Him, and to allow His grace to shape our steps. As we release the burden of self-reliance and embrace the freedom found in surrender, we open ourselves to a life filled with purpose, peace, and the boundless love of our Heavenly Father.

Let’s Pray:
Father God, thank You for being a loving God that is standing with arms ready to receive us when we wander off the path you desire for us to follow. Please align our will with your will so that we can come into alignment following your voice. We repent and ask for forgiveness. Help us to forgive ourselves and to renew our minds. May our hearts return to a posture of praise and thanksgiving honoring You. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Trusting our Faithful God in the storms of life

Trusting Amidst the Storm: Embracing God’s Faithfulness in Chaos
A devotional by Dr. LaVonda McCullough

“When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”—Mark 4:39-40 (NLT)

Have you ever found yourself surrounded by turmoil, feeling as if God had forsaken you?

I certainly have. There are moments when all I could do was wear a smile to mask my tears. As a disciple of Jesus Christ, we are not always shielded from life’s trials and tribulations. However, when our connection with God is intimate, we can lean on His unwavering faithfulness.

Jesus had dedicated time to minister to His disciples and the masses. Now, he sought a moment of rest. He had been imparting His teachings, making this a practical examination of their faith.

Did Jesus anticipate the storm? Yes! This was an opportunity to put their faith to the test. Trusting God and having faith are intertwined. After hearing God’s Word and the Good News about Christ, the intention is to increase our faith (Romans 10:17).

Hearing the Word alone is inadequate; it must be accompanied by action. We need to put it into practice on a daily basis. This is one reason why trials are permitted in our lives. Trials don’t emerge due to God’s abandonment or our disobedience and sin. Instead, they forge a testimony that can inspire those in our sphere of influence.

Friends, in the storms of life, you can rely on Jesus.

I confronted a storm in my own life as I witnessed my daughter endure three weeks of paralysis on the left side of her face. Out of nowhere, she woke up one morning, her face paralyzed as if struck by a stroke. My heart ached as I observed droplets of saliva streaming down her face and I saw my daughter’s crushed spirit.

Challenging situations like these cause us to ask, “God, where are You in this storm?”

The Holy Bible shows us that Jonah faced a storm owing to his disobedience, while the disciples encountered theirs through obedience to the Lord. I was confused and began to blame myself for what had happened. My own struggles with obedience and surrender made me feel alone despite being an “all-in” to serving Christ. Though I knew God was with me intellectually, connecting this knowledge with my heart and trusting Him was a challenge. This was a test of trust, an opportunity to bolster my faith journey. It was evident that this was where actions spoke louder than words, and I could choose to praise my way through the chaos.

You may ask, “But, how did you do that, LaVonda, and how can I do that too?”

Perhaps you’ve experienced the chaos of a life crammed with responsibilities: work and church commitments, volunteering, shuttling children to sporting events, and of course being a loving, supportive spouse. Going through the motions of “knowing God’s Word” with a checklist, yet failing to internalize and embrace it was an issue I needed to correct.

The disciples were aware of the promises to reach the other side. It wasn’t a promise of an uneventful trip, but an assurance of arrival. God’s promises are unwavering, but if we lose sight of Jesus in the process of our doing, our faith weakens.

It was imperative that I return to a daily quiet time with God and have fellowship, seeking His guidance and direction, bringing my needs before Him, so that I can bear good spiritual fruit as His disciple. Just like Jesus was always by the side of His disciples, He is always by our side too! Therefore, we need not to fear. Jesus stood by me through every challenge, erasing any need for fear. My perspective had to shift, embracing the promises while understanding God’s character.

As I studied God’s might and His power to perform miracles, this encouraged me to believe in a miracle in my own life and in my daughter’s life. This would require a mindset change. God can handle any situation and can heal any ailment. And He did! Complete restoration unfolded unexpectedly one Sunday afternoon during our church service. Out of the blue, we witnessed a miracle, catapulting our faith to new heights. Our hope, faith, and trust in God reached new dimensions, demonstrating His ability to transform chaos into serenity in our lives.

Are you ready to embrace God’s character and invite peace into your life?

Let’s Pray:
Heavenly Father, Thank You for your faithfulness and your healing power. You heal all our diseases and meet every need. You are a God of love, restoration, and reconciliation. We are grateful. We praise You for turning chaos into calamity and increasing our faith in You. Each trial has strengthened us where we are weak. We express gratitude for moulding us into your likeness. We love You, Lord. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.
