The Word of Jesus Christ is Alive Within Us
A devotional by Erica Bryant
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”—Colossians 3:16-17 (ESV)
The Word of Jesus Christ was never intended to be a passive presence in our lives as believers. It is meant to inhabit every part of our hearts and minds, shaping our choices, refining our speech, and directing our perspective. When Scripture dwells in us richly, it actively governs how we think, speak, and navigate daily life.
Discipleship extends far beyond church pulpits. Every follower of Jesus is called to engage in the work of teaching through the way we live. In Matthew 28:20, Jesus instructs us to teach others to observe all that He commanded. While our spoken words are important, the authenticity of our faith is often demonstrated through our actions and character. Long before someone reads Scripture, they will observe the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the way we as His disciples live.
As the Word of Christ comes alive within us, it should inform every area of our lives. Our speaking, doing, and thinking must be guided by His teachings. Each of us has the opportunity to teach one another—not necessarily from a platform, but in the everyday moments of our lives. Consider how you can demonstrate Christ's love and teachings through your actions today. When you align your life with the Word, you not only grow personally but also live the truth for those around you. Your life can teach just as much, if not more, than your words.
We should admonish one another with the Word of God. While personal opinions may sometimes miss the mark, we have a wonderful opportunity to gently guide and encourage our friends when they stray from the path that leads to Heaven.
Along with this loving admonition, let's also focus on inspiring and strengthening one another. As the writer of Hebrews instructs, we should actively “stir up one another to love and good works” as we eagerly anticipate the Lord's return (Hebrews 10:24-25). Remember, sharing the truth with love and grace not only nurtures our relationships but also fosters our spiritual growth (Ephesians 4:15).
Singing the Word of God
We should sing the Word of God to one another. Singing Scripture together creates a powerful impact on our hearts!
This can be done in public worship. In corporate worship, the songs we sing should be rooted in the Word of God. Our songs should tell of His love, mercy, and grace. We should lift our voices to “Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples” (Psalm 96:3, ESV).
Beyond corporate worship in church on the weekends, music can offer heartfelt support during tough times. Sharing hymns or spiritual songs with someone who is sick or grieving can bring them comfort and peace that words sometimes cannot. Let’s embrace this beautiful way to uplift each other! Genuinely thankful hearts naturally produce praise that anchors us even through challenging circumstances.
Doing All in the Name of Jesus
The Apostle Paul concludes this passage with a standard for daily work. He advises us in Colossians 3:17 (ESV), “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” This cannot be over-emphasized. “Whatever you do” includes everything!
Everything you do and say has the potential to bring God glory. Whatever career you’re in, do it in the name of Jesus. Whatever the activity, do it in the name of Jesus. If you cannot do it in Jesus' name, you probably shouldn't do it! Whatever we do and say should be done and said to the glory of God with thankful hearts.
These verses promote unity through the Word of God. When we teach and admonish with the Word of God, it cannot be refuted. Our words can offend, fail, and fall to the ground. But God's Word uplifts, heals, restores and delivers. His Word will stand forever! The Sword of the Spirit (God’s Word also known as The Holy Bible) in the hand of a skillful believer, is a powerful weapon.
Let the Word of Christ dwell richly in you and let every word and deed become an offering that brings glory to Jesus.
Reflection Questions:
#1: What might it look like for the Word of Christ to dwell richly in every part of your life?
#2: How can your words and actions teach others the way of Christ?
#3: How can you use Scripture to admonish and encourage someone with both truth and grace?
#4: What songs help you remember God's love, mercy, and grace, or bring comfort to someone who is suffering?
#5: What is one area of your life you can more intentionally live out in the name of Jesus, with thankfulness?
Let’s Pray:
Dear God,
Lord, I invite Your Word to take root within my heart and mind. Guide my thoughts, words, and actions so that they reflect Your love and wisdom. Empower me to teach, encourage, and uplift those around me with Your unchanging truth. Fill my heart with an overflowing spirit of gratitude and praise. May my life be a living testimony of Your grace. May everything I do be for Your glory and honor. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
