Devotionals for the Heart: Why we should focus on Jesus Christ

The Shift
A devotional by Colette Lawrence

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”— Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV)

Have you been looking at the past and wondering “Lord, when?”

I know I have done that so many times when life gets hard, the challenges seem overwhelming, and there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

This is the start of a new year. It carries with it the promise and hope of change. However, not all of us are at the place where we can receive that promise. Instead, we are fixated on what didn’t work, the number of times we have tried and failed, the turmoil we face in our relationships, the loss we suffered, and so on. We complain about what God hasn’t done, and we get upset with Him like petulant children.

Today, the Lord is reminding us through His words advising us to not focus on the past that we are to not to dwell there because He is doing something new in our present. My friends, if our focus remains on the past and on what God didn’t do, then neither you nor I are in a place to “see” what God is doing. We cannot look backward and forward simultaneously, so the decision is ours. Where will your gaze be fixed?

I know it’s not easy to believe that a shift is coming, but it is. In the same way that the Lord gives us seedtime and harvest and reminds us that there is a season for everything under the sun, we can trust that He will keep all of His promises. The promise made to the children of Israel of making a way in the wilderness and streams in the desert (Isaiah 43:19) can also be claimed by us. They went through judgments and would face even more. However, the Lord reminded them that He was still their God when He said in Isaiah 43:15 (NIV), “I am the Lord, your Holy One, Israel’s Creator, your King.”

The Lord knows you, your challenges, heartache, and pain. He is touched by the feelings of your infirmity, and He understands how you are feeling and sees you right where you are. What I love about this is that the Lord understands the season we are in and where our gaze is fixed. I believe God is saying gently to you, “Look to Me. Focus your attention on Me and then all your cares—everything that is affecting you—will become dim in My presence.”

You may be in the wilderness or approaching it. Wherever you are in that journey, you can be comforted with the promise that as you fix your gaze on the Lord, He will make streams in the wasteland for you (Isaiah 43:19). Last year might have been a very hard year for you. I understand because it was true for me as well. However, as I look forward, I am comforted with the hope of a promise that I know will be fulfilled because He who has promised is faithful.

There is a shift coming, a change. I pray that you will be ready to see it and prepared to receive it. Whatever challenge you may be faced with, God is with you, right by your side, and He has wonderful plans for you. Look up and see that He is doing something new for you! Look back to reflect and express gratitude for what God has done then look forward to continuing to move into what God has for you in the future. Ask Him for spiritual eyes and discernment to see His revelations as they unfold.

Let’s Pray: Heavenly Father, I pray that You minister to every soul who needs a gentle reminder to look up to You today and to know that You keep Your promises. May they rest in the fact that what You say You will do, You always will do. Thank You for the shift that is coming. We look forward to the future you have for us with anticipation. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: God can help you overcome the past

Overcoming the Past
A devotional by Mirachelle Canada

“From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”—2 Corinthians 5:16-17 (ESV)

The past can sometimes contain lingering reminders of our mistakes and failures. Perhaps things done in sin that led to regret, or accidents brought on by missteps or miscalculations. God doesn’t want us to live in the past, nor be taunted by the enemy (Satan) from anything in it.

When we receive the gift of salvation provided by Jesus Christ (John 3:16) and accept Him as our Savior, His love transforms us. He makes us a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). But, because of our worldly flesh, it is often difficult to forget or let go of the past no matter how hard we try. This might also include family and friends in our lives who also have difficulty forgiving our “past selves” or letting go of the past.

In our weakness of flesh, Satan will try to use the sins of our past against us. He tests our strength in Christ by poking at our weaknesses, often by using someone we love or care about to do it. Not long ago a friend of mine, Joe, came to me for prayer because of present day negative and chastising comments he received from family members regarding his past mistakes before Christ changed his life. Through a lot of work and dedication, Joe was healed from his past. Today, he is a very different person. For him the “old passed away”, but not for some of his family members. It was difficult for Joe to experience such an attack, which caused him pain and feelings of anger and resentment.

I reminded Joe that, while the negative comments were hard to take, they were not the truth. The truth is he belongs to Christ, so he is a new creation. He is a son of God! He is loved and covered by God. I prayed with him and told him to keep praying until he felt at peace. Only the power of prayer can overcome what we cannot do ourselves in our fleshly weakness. We cannot overcome the devil or anything else without calling on God, who is our defender in the faith. He will come to our aid and rescue every time.

Next, I encouraged Joe to forgive those who wounded him. What they did was in their own flesh and, as we are one with Christ, we must not regard it (2 Corinthians 5:16). Matthew 6:14 (ESV) also says, “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” Forgiveness in Christ has the power to not only set us free, but also those who hurt us. We may not be able to change their fleshly actions or response, but we can rest assured that God takes control of any situation we put back in His hands through forgiveness.

Finally, I encouraged Joe to resist Satan, to pray in the Spirit (Ephesians 6:18), and tell the enemy to take his lies back to the pit where he belongs. We must know who our enemy is! Joe wasn’t fighting his family members, he was fitting against Satan, who wants to destroy him with lies about his past. When we resist the devil, he must flee from us (James 4:7)!

So, if you’re struggling with things from your past, take heart and do not be discouraged! God is with you (1 Chronicles 28:20)! You can be still and know that the Lord will fight for you (Exodus 14:14). His great love can and will sustain you. He will bring you through the storm to the other side because He is in you and “behold, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Glory be to God!

Let’s Pray: Dear Lord, though I struggle against flesh and blood, I know you fight my battles. You will overcome my flesh because in you I am a new creation. Thank You for overcoming my current circumstances and setting me free from anything the enemy tries to use against me. I am not my past, and any mistakes in it no longer have a hold on me. In you there is always victory over my enemies! In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: When God promises to give you something new

A Promise of Something New
A devotional written by Essie Faye Taylor

“Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.”—Isaiah 42:9 (KJV)

The minute I walked into my apartment the stench was unbearable.

I gasped for air as I pinched my nose between my finger and thumb. I squinted my eyes and made a whistling sound with my mouth. “What is that smell?”

I opened the door and windows to let in the fresh air. Then I quickly searched the house to locate the smell. I opened the refrigerator in search of spoiled food. Finally, I found the culprit. It was the trashcan. There was a bag of spoiled raw chicken in there.

The smell of old food permeated the entire house, making breathing unbearable. I have a question for you: What old thing in your life is stinking up your thinking or your perspective of life? Are you allowing old thoughts and hurts to hold you captive and prohibit you from experiencing the new blessings that the Lord promises?

In the text, the eagle-eye prophet Isaiah declares a message of victory. As the mouthpiece of God, he boldly speaks of new things to come. God declares through the prophet that old things have passed. I’d like to pause here because many times, we are stuck in the past.

We are fixated on negative past experiences of fear or failure. We are trapped in the grips of unforgiveness, past pain, or grief. Don’t get me wrong, your experiences and feelings are valid. What happened was unfair, and hurtful, and the pain is real. However, God promises healing for your past. He promises to give us something fresh and brand new. God is ready to forget the former things and admonishes us to forget in the sense of not dwelling on the past. He wants us to move forward into the new blessings He has for us.

The prophet (Isaiah) declares that old things are over, meaning they have passed. We no longer have to relive our past mistakes or bad choices. They have passed.

Here are five steps you can take to forget the past and move on with your life:

Step #1: Don’t dwell on the past. Instead, remember the lessons you’ve learned. Remember the pain, but don’t get stuck there.

Step #2: Heal day by day through various strategies: therapy, prayer, and journaling. Surround yourself with faith, hope, and love.

Step #3: Partner with God to turn from the old and embrace the new.

Step #4: Rid yourself of the “smell” of the old that permeates your thinking, perspective, and life experiences. Let go of the pain and forgive those who have hurt you.

Step #5: Remember, turning from the old and embracing the new takes a paradigm shift. It is worth renewing your mind in order to walk toward a new path and a new vision. Be kind to yourself.

Let’s Pray:

Heavenly Father, You know my secrets. You know the extent of my past—the good, bad, and ugly. You are acquainted with my pain and grief. You saw it all—you were there all the time with your love, grace, and mercy. Father, heal my broken places.

Heal me from the old things: thoughts, ideas, painful experiences, relationships, etc. that would hinder my progress in life and in Your Kingdom. You also know my future. You know my end from my beginning. Help me to believe and embrace the new things that you promise. Give me a new perspective and renew my faith in myself, in others, and most importantly in You.

Don’t allow my past to ruin my future. Heal me and I shall be healed. Thank you Father for hearing and answering me.

In the Name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
