Movie Review: Between Borders

Momentum Influencers Network (MIN) invited me to watch a new movie titled “Between Borders” and review it before it shows in theaters. After seeing the riveting trailer, I agreed.

Before I share my review, I’d like to share a word from MIN: This film stars Elizabeth Tabish from “The Chosen” and Elizabeth Mitchell. Watch this moving family film in theaters starting January 26, 2025.

Synopsis: In a crumbling Soviet Union, the Petrosyan family are outcasts wherever they go. Armenian heritage marks them for discrimination both at home in Azerbaijan and in Russia. Based on a riveting true story of faith and hope set amidst great oppression … in the shadow of exile, hope became their home.

~*~
My Review:

Between Borders is a poignant film based on a true story that chronicles the life of the Petrosyan family and portrays their troubled journey to freedom and safety.

Elizabeth Tabish, an actress famous for her role as Mary Magdalene in “The Chosen” (a TV show about the life of Jesus Christ), played Violet Petrosyan. Patrick Sabongui, a Canadian actor and stunt performer, played Ivan Petrosyan who is Violet’s husband. Elizabeth Mitchell is the actress who played the lawyer who was making a case against asylum in the United States of America for the Petrosyan Family.

This movie is remarkable. The acting is beautiful. As I watched each scene, I could feel the emotions of Violet and Ivan. As a woman of color in this real world where people of color are marginalized, I could relate to how Violet felt in many scenarios when she was treated lesser than based on her appearance.

Being part of a community of color that is discriminated against based on race and ethnicity, I understood the plight of the Petrosyan Family as they felt torn about leaving their home where racism was rife, but it was all they knew, and seeking refuge in another country. They bravely faced the unknown in hopes of securing safety and a better life for their family.

In the beginning of the conflict in this movie where crowds of people are marching in the streets holding up signs with words that call for death to the Armenians, Violet tells her family who is concerned about their safety that these threats against Armenians happen off and on throughout history in their country. She assured them that the threats of danger would die down and they would be safe. Her hope was short-lived because in the next few scenes of the movie, some of the people who hate Armenians murdered a friend of the Petrosyan family just because of his ethnicity.

This incident propels Violet and her husband (Ivan) to gather their essential belongings in a few suitcases and flee to Russia. However, their relief proves to be fleeting because within days of living in a small and cold apartment, the Russian cops and a few bad people start to target Ivan. There are several scenes in this movie where Ivan barely survives attacks from the people in Russia who hate him just because he’s Armenian. When Violet searches for a job to help Ivan support their family of four (they have two girls), she can only find work as a teacher and the woman who hired Violet told her that she only is hiring her because there’s a shortage of teachers in their school. She makes it known to Violet that they prefer to only hire “their people” (Russians) and makes Violet repeat words that are meant to dehumanize her and make her feel worthless. Violet’s boss then tells her to recite those words in her head every day at work and remember that her life has no value. This made Violet break down and cry. But she stays strong as accepts the job, showing up faithfully and doing the work even though she faces discrimination and mistreatment in her work environment every single day.

Elizabeth Mitchell plays the lawyer who holds the fate of the Petrosyan family in her hands. Her portrayal of this cold-hearted, racially tone-deaf attorney is well-done. I did not like the negative and cruel way she treated Violet and Ivan. She made them feel lesser than and tried to twist their words when they spoke on the witness stand before the court. This lawyer tried to make it seem like their pain and claims of racism were unfounded. She tried to argue against what Violet and Ivan knew to be true because they experienced it when they lived outside of the USA.

The tension in the courtroom scene is so thick that you can cut it with a knife. And the way that the actors draw you into the story makes you want to know what will happen at the end of this movie. The way that it all plays out will keep you guessing until it’s over.

Final thoughts: This movie was incredibly well-done and delivered. I think it’s worth buying tickets and seeing it for yourself in theaters this Jan. 26 to Jan. 28.

"The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" (movie review)

Momentum Influencers Network invited me to participate in their promotional campaign for The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by watching this movie. As a person who loves Christmastime and faith-filled films, I was delighted to say yes!

Before I share my review of this film, allow me to share a few words from Momentum Influencers Network about this wonderful work of art:

Nobody is ready for the mayhem and surprises that ensue when six of the worst youngsters disrupt the town's yearly Christmas performance.

Synopsis: The Herdman kids are absolutely the worst. They lie, they steal, they bully…and they’ve hijacked the town Christmas pageant. Directed by Dallas Jenkins (“The Chosen”) and based on the international bestseller by Barbara Robinson, THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER follows six siblings who sneak into church searching for snacks and walk away with the lead roles in the town pageant. Grace (Judy Greer) is directing the performance for the very first time; she and her daughter Beth (Molly Belle Wright) and husband Bob (Pete Holmes) are less than amused. But the play’s mischievous stars might unwittingly teach a community the true meaning of Christmas.

Watch THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER film, in theaters everywhere beginning November 8. The newest film from Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company is based on the beloved children’s book classic book. As of November 2023, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson has sold more than 7 million copies since its publication in 1972.

~*~
My Review:

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
is a superbly produced movie that made me laugh, cry, smile and rejoice! It was filled with memorable moments that were skillfully portrayed by the abundance of talented actors. It wasn’t only the main characters who had excellence in performance; the acting skills of everyone involved—even the actors in the audience and background—was noteworthy!

When I learned that Dallas Jenkins who directs the hit series, “The Chosen”, was the brains behind this production, it all made sense why it was such an engaging and impeccably done film! This movie is based on a book by Barbara Robinson, international bestseller that I now want to read. The storytelling skills of the screenplay writers of this movie are second to none.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Everything about it came together to create a special masterpiece. I think something that makes this movie so special is the fact that it is so relatable. We all—most of us, especially in the USA—can identify with the classic underdog story, one about misfits who save the day! If we ourselves were not misfits, we most likely know several people who are and we’re either rooting for them or avoiding them. I like how in this movie, the crowd went from being fearful of the Herdman children and gossiping about their destructive nature, to rooting for them! You’ll have to watch the full movie to find out how and why they went from hating the Herdmans to loving these troubled children.

I believe that the message in this movie applies to our real life: Don’t count out the people God has counted in. God created everyone—those who act good and those who act bad—and He loves us all the same. God doesn’t endorse evil actions, nor does he want us to do bad things. But God does want us to love everyone how Jesus Christ loves all humankind. Only God can change the heart of someone from hating Christianity to fighting for it—such is the case of how God changed Saul (a persecutor of Christians) into Paul (who then became a warrior for Jesus Christ). You may be surprised to see how faith in God changed the hearts of characters in this movie. It’s a beautiful portrayal of how God never gives up on us and how He uses community, the Bible and the church—as well as unexpected ways—to bring us all together and show us how His love is unconditional.

I won’t say more so I don’t give away everything about this wonderful story! But I will say that if you want to be encouraged and inspired this holiday season, watch this movie. It’s worth your time and your money.

My Review of the "Life in Christ" Bible

Momentum Influencers Network sent a copy of the Life in Christ Bible to me and asked me to write a review about it. Before I share my review, read these words below from the professionals of Momentum:

God has a purpose for your life in this moment. You have a part to play in what He is doing in the world. But knowing why you are here starts with knowing who God says you are. The Life in Christ Bible invites you to embrace your identity and purpose as you:

• Discover why you matter-not because of anything you do, but because you are made in the image of God.

• Explore how the gospel of Jesus Christ makes you a new person.

• Learn how who God says you are changes how you think, speak, work, and move through the world.

• Embrace your purpose as you discover why you matter, how the Gospel makes you a new person, and learn how that changes the way you think, speak, work, and move through the world.

~*~
My review of the Life in Christ Bible:

This is a wonderful version of The Holy Bible. It has all the traditional Scripture that makes up most Bibles, but it also includes sidebar features and articles that help you dive deeper into your study of God’s Word.

I found this very helpful in my own personal relationship with the Lord. The notes in the sidebars challenged me to really think about the Scripture as I read it and motivated me to apply these words of wisdom to my daily life.

I believe this book lives up to its mission to help readers embrace their purpose and discover why they matter to God. I recommend this Bible to everyone, regardless of their age or gender. It truly is a life-changing read! The only thing I didn’t like about it was the design symbol on every page. But that’s not a big problem. It’s still wonderful!

My Review of the Unshakable Moxie video series and Bible study

Momentum Influencers Network (MIN) asked me to review “Unshakable Moxie” recently. Before I share my review, learn more about this special Bible study and series hosted by two of my favorite Christian influencers!

Words from MIN:

Unshakable Moxie is an episodic video series that invites you to discover what it means to live a life of resilient faith. The Unshakable Moxie: Growing a Resilient Faith, A 6-Session Women's Bible Study with Video Access is a perfect pairing with the video series to help you develop and strengthen your own life of resilient faith. Unshakable Moxie is hosted by Toni Collier (Broken Crayons Still Color) and Moriah Smallbone (The Chosen). The video series features Lina AbuJamra, Ruth Chou Simons, Katie Lewis, Dr. Bernice King, and Joni Eareckson Tada.

Unshakable Moxie is presented by Our Daily Bread Ministries. This 6-part docuseries and accompanying Bible Study invite you to learn from remarkable women who trust God even through their lowest valleys, allowing Him to write their story as one of resilient faith and overcoming.

The Unshakable Moxie Study Pack includes the 6-lesson Bible Study (with QR codes to the 6 video episodes), a beautiful hardcover Prayer Journal, and inspirational cards that share Scripture and powerful quotes from the series. Each item can also be purchased separately.

What does a “woman of moxie” look like? She is a dynamic, resolute woman of resilient faithfulness, unshakable confidence, and trust in God.

My review:

Unshakable Moxie does a great job delving into topics that we don’t often talk about (hardship, disillusionment and forgiveness). This is a series for people who are looking for real answers to their real-life problems. It is also a wonderful way to use Scripture to encourage women to grow in their faith no matter how troubling the times they are experiencing.

The author of this Bible study, Lina AbuJamra, shares her heart as a woman of moxie throughout the pages of this book. AbuJamra shares the inspiration she has drawn from her life experiences and uses those lessons to teach women how to build a resilient faith that is their own. Each chapter of this study contains a QR code linking to the Unshakable Moxie video series where hosts Moriah Smallbone and Toni Collier take you on faith journeys with special guests including Joni Eareckson Tada, Ruth Chou Simons, and more.

Honestly, I didn’t make it through the entire Bible study and every episode but what I did read and watch was life-changing! I appreciated the honesty of the hosts and everyone who they interviewed. I like how the very first episode was heartwarming with a personal touch as Moriah welcomed Toni into her home as they were preparing for a birthday party. I liked how they inserted humor as they cooked food in Moriah’s kitchen (the spices were too hot, and they laughed about it and quickly drank water from the sink)! I love how they honored Moriah’s grandma and celebrated her family legacy. I like how Toni wore her heart on her sleeve and told intimate details about the lessons she’s learned in her life story. Her storytelling style is relatable and encouraging. I like how Moriah was candid about being hesitant to share her heart with the world because of her guardedness caused by trust issues. Her vulnerability was admirable and courageous. I like how Moriah and Toni’s transparency encouraged every woman they interviewed to open up and be brave as they answered questions that let the viewers into their world.

The Bible study is very comprehensive and detailed. But I was easily overwhelmed by all the questions that are meant for the reader to write their answers and reflections on several lines. This is a homework assignment that goes on for more than five pages. It is the only reason why I haven’t finished reading the study yet. However, the video episodes via the QR code were much more easily digestible.

I recommend this book and video series to any woman who wants to grow spiritually as she tackles the hard parts of her life story and see how God redeems it all as well as how Jesus Christ can make beauty out of ashes.

Now for some words from the publisher, Our Daily Bread Ministries:

For more than 85 years, Our Daily Bread Ministries has been a donor-supported, non-profit ministry committed to nurturing a lifelong love for God’s Word as millions around the world grow closer to God and are transformed by their relationship with Jesus. Through our daily devotions, podcasts, videos, and other resources, we work to make the life-changing wisdom and stories of the Bible understandable and accessible to all.

In our mission of fueling a global Bible-engagement movement, we strive to make Scripture a part of everyday life, giving the Holy Spirit greater opportunity to transform hearts and help people share the light of Jesus with their spiritual fruit. It is only with the generous prayers, friendship, and support of people across the globe that we can reach the ends of the earth with God’s Word and see how He is continuing to work in the lives and faith journeys of all His children.

My review of "Someone Like You" movie and a book giveaway for you

My Review of Someone Like You (movie)

Today, I have another movie review for you and a giveaway contest at the end of this post! In case you didn’t know, Great American Pure Flix is like the faith-based version of Netflix. It works the same way the difference is in the content that points you back to Jesus Christ and shows you how much The Creator of the Universe loves you!

Great American Pure Flix VIP Ambassador program asked me via Momentum Influencers Network to review the movie they are promoting, Someone Like You.

Here’s the synopsis of Someone Like You with words from Momentum: Based on the popular novel by #1 NY Times Bestselling author Karen Kingsbury, Someone Like You is an achingly beautiful redemptive love story. Shocking news hits after young architect Dawson Gage loses his best friend, London Quinn. Now in his heartbreak, Dawson is compelled to launch an impossible search for London’s secret twin sister, twins separated as embryos. But along the way, Dawson never planned to fall in love.

~*~
Now for my review:

This beautiful movie, Someone Like You, is based on a fiction story of the same title. New York Times bestselling author Karen Kingsbury wrote the novel and made it into a movie presented by her own company (Karen Kingsbury Productions).

Someone Like You is more than a sweet second chance romance story. It is a poignant tale of love, loss, heartbreak, family matters, redemption and how God is always in the details.

Sarah Fisher plays two separate but intertwined roles: London Quinn and Andi Allen. She did a brilliant and very convincing job of playing these twin sisters, such a brilliant work that I didn’t realize that it was Fisher playing both women until I did research to write this review! Fisher knows how to be in character in the truest since because London and Andi who never met in this movie, though twins, are very different. London likes to live on the wild side. She’s a go-getter with a daring mind and a vivacious personality. Andi is sweet, smart and shy. But both characters are very beautiful and carry a light. London’s light is her love for life and she’s vowed to never go to an actual church though the stage (theater) is like her church, while Andi’s is the light she carries as a Christian for Jesus Christ.

Jake Allyn plays Dawson Gage. He’s a very good looking architect with a heart of gold and love for Jesus Christ. He’s also a gentlemen and London’s best friend. He always treated her with respect and care. London doesn’t fully realize that Jake is in love with her. I could tell that it broke his heart to hear London’s stories about her boyfriends over the years because he realized she only sees him (Jake) as a platonic friend. It pulled at my heartstrings to see the pain in Jake’s eyes as he realized the love of his life (London) will never see him more than her buddy not her future husband. But it made me smile later on in the film when I saw how Andi was falling for Jake and seeing him much more than a “friend” and he was falling for her too—not because she looked like London but because she’s Andi and he grew to adore everything about her as a woman, friend and individual.

London and Andi never meet each other in this movie. Andi doesn’t even know she was adopted when she was an embryo. Andi spent her entire life up until a pivotal scene in the movie, believing her parents were her biological mom and dad. Before meeting Dawson and hearing the truth from her parents, Andi is living a full life with her family, friends and her boyfriend who plans to propose. But her world comes crashing down around her when she finds out everything she believed about her family was a lie. So she packs up, jumps into her vehicle and with Dawson’s help, Andi searches for the truth. This journey leads her to so much more than the answers she’s seeking; it leads her to a deeper understanding of people, life and true love.

There is tragedy in this movie but I won’t go into details so I won’t ruin the plot for you. However, I can promise you that this film has a wonderfully satisfying ending and everything comes together—tragedy and triumph—in a way that will make your heart smile.

Finally, I’d like to acknowledge what wonderful job Kingsbury and her movie production team did on this film! You cannot tell that they didn’t have help from any popular Hollywood studios. Everything about this movie—the acting, the set design, the hair/makeup/wardrobe, the writing, the plot, the entire cinematography—was remarkable! I believe this movie should win awards.

I think you’ll love this movie. But don’t take my word for it. Go see it for yourself!

My Review of "County Rescue" and a giveaway contest for you

My Review of County Rescue series (Season One)

Today, I have another review for you and a giveaway contest at the end of this post! In case you didn’t know, Great American Pure Flix is like the faith-based version of Netflix. It works the same way the difference is in the content that points you back to Jesus Christ and shows you how much The Creator of the Universe loves you!

With new premium and exclusive original entertainment choices every week, Great American Pure Flix streaming service has the largest variety of high-quality, curated, positive, encouraging, wholesome movies, series and kids' content in one service.

Great American Pure Flix VIP Ambassador program asked me via Momentum Influencers Network to review their new series County Rescue. I watched every episode in Season One of this captivating series and found it to be engaging, inspiring and heartwarming all at once. This is a series you won’t soon forget.

Here’s the synopsis of County Rescue with words from Momentum: EMTs are courageous, everyday heroes, but it’s challenging to qualify for this critical job. This is the story of an EMT unit who save lives while navigating their own life, love, and faith.

~*~
Now for my review:

County Rescue is a new series that will arrest your attention from the start in the first episode of Season One and will keep you on the edge of your seat with anticipation of what comes next, right up to the final scene!

Here is my breakdown of the characters and storyline …

Danielle “Dani” Miller is a likeable character because she is relatable. Dani represents people who struggle in knowing what God wants them to do for a living. She’s tried different jobs but stayed in none over a year or less. She admits that she is a quitter as soon as she is featured in the opening scene of this series. However, as the story unfolds, Dani shows that she is capable of true grit despite all of the obstacles she’s facing in her personal life such as dealing with the pain of breaking off an engagement and trying to get her parents to not only see that she is living up to her potential but also trying to get them to accept her faith in God. Her parents don’t believe her when she tells them that she heard God tell her that she is a rescuer. It is the main reason why she is applying to become a professional EMT.

I think it’s commendable that Dani is serious about her newfound faith and even more serious about obeying God, doing whatever He tells her to do no matter what anyone else says. This is important in real life too. It’s said that the only opinion that matters is not of this world. We are to follow God’s direction and not let our fellow humans deter us from doing what we know God called us to do.

Tim is a fellow rookie who wants to be a first responder but his story is different from Dani’s. He’s faced a lot of hardship and his motivation for applying for this job is so he can afford to take care of his Mom financially. He has other problems in his life that he’s not quick to admit to Dani. But it’s sweet how they go from archrivals (because the boss said he can only hire one new EMT), to true friends.

Griffin, the son of the man in charge, shows up at a time of peace to bring chaos—or at least that’s what it looks like when he first steps onto the scene. Dani and Tim immediately notice that nepotism may result in Griffin being hired without doing any real work and that means neither Dani nor Tim will become an EMT. Knowing this, they decide to form an alliance with each other so they can outperform Griffin and convince the chief to choose to hire one of them not the boss’s son.

Chief Scotty seems impossible to please at first (despite Dani and Tim’s best efforts) but as the series evolves from episode to episode it becomes clear that Scotty puts up a tough front as is required because of the nature of his job, but he’s truly a soft and kind person at heart. This characteristic comes into play toward the end of Season One in ways that I cannot share without running the plot for you.

There are several other main characters who are all professional EMTs at that station and they each play a part—especially in taking Dani and Tim under their protective and wise wings. It’s very heartwarming how even the tough-as-nails type of colleagues change enough to help the rookies learn the ropes. They each play a crucial role in the development of Dani and Tim’s character. They also give very good advice. Ashley Dalton proves to be a woman of faith from the start. It’s mentioned in the first episode that she not only interviewed Dani for the job; she’s mentoring her in her Christian faith and isn’t shy about praying for and with Dani.

I loved this series! It was a blessing to my soul. I watched the entire first season in one sitting and I cannot wait to see more episodes of this story! If you need to see content that will encourage and inspire your heart, County Rescue is for you.

I watched this thought-provoking, cleverly crafted, beautifully told, life-changing movie a few weeks before it was made available for viewing on Great American Pure Flix today (Sept. 15). I admired so much about this movie! I’m eager to share my review with you. First, I’d like to describe the storyline in the words of talking points from Momentum then I’ll share my thoughts (review).

Here’s the synopsis of the movie with words from Momentum and me:
When an entitled influencer loses everything, she must humbly trust God to understand what the meaning of true influence is. Desperate, she takes a job at a homeless shelter only so she has a place to lay her head and quickly realizes the joy and purpose that comes from serving others. Divine Influencer is such a timely movie as the world of social media expands at a rapid pace. The message of this film is a reflection on how easy it is to live for the likes, the shares and the comments instead of living our lives for God or to serve others.

The opening scenes of this movie show the viewer that Olivia, a social media influencer, is celebrating her birthday and she’s behind on her rent. Then the scene that starts making the Olivia's world unravel happens: Olivia accidentally posts a video of her bashing a product she represents and that results in her being fired. Making matters worse, Olivia’s best friend moves into her position as an influencer for her former boss. As the story progresses, Olivia hears an interview with Andrew Geller, a top marketing executive, and she quickly realizes she doesn’t have her own sense of purpose or direction. All hope seems lost in the next few scenes when Olivia’s parents call and tell her they are selling all their belongings and are creating a nonprofit to further God’s kingdom. Olivia’s parents tell her she’s on her own and they are no longer going to pay for her apartment and lifestyle.

After wallowing in despair and briefly staying at a friend’s house, Olivia runs into Ryan, a high school classmate who she hasn’t seen in 10 years. He invites her to help serve dinner at the Rescue Mission he works and he ends up hiring her to work there. But to work there, Olivia must live there. So she moves into the shelter and her life along with the life of everyone who she influences, starts to change!

Now for my review:

I was happy to see that Shari Rigby, a renown Christian actress, directed this movie. She definitely is a natural behind the camera and knows how to tell a story.

The producer of this movie, Shawn Boskie, did a wonderful work in producing this story and bringing it to life.

Lara Silva who you may recognize from the popular Bible story series titled, “The Chosen”, did a fabulous and very convincing job of playing Olivia Golden who has been wealthy from birth because of her parents.

Jason Burkey, who played Ryan in this movie, did a great job. He was always in character and the way he interacted with Olivia was adorable.

Jesse Metcalfe, who played Andrew in this movie, is no newbie to acting. He delivered a stellar performance every time he was part of a scene.

All of these main actors and those in supporting roles collaborated wonderfully well in telling this story. From the start, these characters drew me into the movie and made me want to know what happens next. I found the storyline to be very real and reflective of real-life. I remember hearing about similar stories on popular talk shows on television years ago which is why I believe this movie conveys a message that is very relatable and yet also very inspirational.

The director, producer and cast really brought God into the picture. Seeing how the characters grew in their faith journey with God was really inspiring. Watching Olivia transform from self-absorbed to focusing on others and helping make their life better is a note we could all take and apply it to our daily life because people are struggling and we all need Jesus Christ. They say, “You may be the only Bible that some people read.” And I think that so many storytelling elements in this movie reminded me of that truth.

I must say that having a five-star chef work in the kitchen of the homeless shelter was an unexpected and very nice touch and the food she fixed looked delicious!

My takeaway from this movie was how important it is to count your blessings, help others and encourage everyone you meet because we’re all fighting battles—some silent and some obvious—and we all need Jesus who is the answer to it all.

If you need a dose of hope and encouragement, watch Divine Influencer. It will help you in so many ways and it may make you hungry too! Hungry for a closer walk with Jesus Christ, and hungry to fill your stomach with some good food.

Themes of this movie included:
  • Self-centered vs. serving others
  • Entitlement
  • Sense of purpose and direction
  • Not taking responsibility for your actions
  • Hardship is a humbling experience
  • Second chances
  • God sees us and knows us in all circumstances
  • Rely on Jesus
  • Power and importance of prayer
  • Asking God to use us for His will and purpose
  • Our past does not define us, our identity is in Christ

My Review of "Eleanor's Bench" (NEW series available on Pure Flix)

My Review of "Eleanor’s Bench" (NEW series on Pure Flix):

Today, I have another review for you and a giveaway contest at the end of this post! In case you didn’t know, Pure Flix is like the faith-based version of Netflix. It works the same way the difference is in the content that points you back to Jesus Christ and shows you how much The Creator of the Universe loves you!

Pure Flix is a one-stop shop for faith and family-friendly movies and shows where you can confidently stream in your home with the entire family. With new premium and exclusive original entertainment choices every week, Pure Flix streaming service has the largest variety of high-quality, curated, positive, encouraging, wholesome movies, series and kids' content in one service. Pure Flix is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony Pictures Entertainment, alongside AFFIRM Films.

Pure Flix VIP Ambassador program asked me to review Episode 5 of the “Eleanor’s Bench” series. Here’s the main idea for this series, according to PureFlix:
“Eleanor Thomas’s success as a Washington DC juvenile court judge is challenged when her inner-city past comes to court and demands more than judgment, prompting her to return to her impoverished neighborhood of youth. Will her renewed sense of purpose reinvigorate her faith?”

“We Can’t Change the Past” was the title of Episode 5. According to PureFlix, this is the summary of that episode: “Eleanor is crushed by the weight of what’s currently happening with Jewels and how she feels personally responsible. She begins to have nightmares and episodes of panic and anxiety that cripple her. Racked with guilt, Eleanor doesn’t know if she can forgive herself for the missed time she didn’t spend taking care of Jewels. In moving forward and healing from past wounds, we must accept that we cannot change the actions and decisions we made in the past. It’s easy to let our minds endlessly replay what happened and all the ways we would change it. But, we can’t do that. Replaying the past over again in our minds isn’t healthy—spiritually or mentally. God doesn’t want us to be stuck on one thing we cannot change. He wants to help us learn how to accept it, ask for forgiveness and be renewed by His mercy and grace.”

Now for my review:

I watched this riveting episode before it was made available for viewing on Pure Flix. It compelled me to care so much about the characters and be invested in the storyline. The acting captivated my attention to the point where I wasn’t ready for the cliffhanger at the end. I thought it would go on for another hour. All of this made me eager to know how the story ends.

Promotional copy from PureFlix says: “Eleanor’s Bench” is full of important lessons about following God’s calling, practicing self-control, learning from your past and discovering that we are enough and deserving of God’s love.

I completely agree. There are so many powerful life lessons packed into this episode and I’d say every episode in this series. It’s like PureFlix put you in a classroom to learn about life, faith, hope, forgiveness and God. This series doesn’t shy away from tackling tough topics that many people have faced or will face in life. I like how they used faith in God as the Guiding Light that points people to True North and leads them home. This world may not be safe but we are always safe in the arms of God who created this world. Ultimately, I’d say this series is about growing closer to God and helping Him help you navigate the twists and turns of life on Earth.

Karen Abercrombie played the starring role as Judge Eleanor. Abercrombie’s light as a believer in Jesus Christ, and her skills as an actress who fully immerses herself in a character, shone bright as the sun through this entire series! I was delighted to see that the casting director chose Cameron Arnett to be Abercrombie’s co-star! I remember his role in another series on PureFlix called “Saved by Grace” where he played the angel Jeremiah. However, in “Eleanor’s Bench” he played Reginald (her old friend from the old neighborhood). Arnett’s acting skills are superb!

Themes of this episode included:
· We are forgiven and need to forgive others
· It’s never too late to make a change or follow through on a commitment

Spotlight on "Love Connects Us All"

~*~
The story behind “Love Connects Us All” by Michelle Medlock Adams

I love sharing my children’s books at schools across the country. This past year, I had the privilege of reading my Christmas picture book, “Dachshund Through the Snow” to several elementary classes the week before holiday break. There’s a part in my book where Crosby, the littlest dachshund in all of Diggityville, is bullied because of his tiny stature. I always stop after that scene and ask, “Have any of you ever been bullied?” Unfortunately, far too many hands go up after I ask that question, and this particular day was no different.

I had just finished reading the final page when the bell rang, and the students began lining up to return to their classrooms, except for one little girl. She hung back and inched her way toward my book table.

“Mrs. Adams, I was bullied…because I don’t have a mom,” the little girl said in a shaky voice.

I knelt down and hugged her.

“Honey, I’m so sorry that happened to you, but you know what? You are so loved by your dad, and you are also loved by God! That’s a lot of love, isn’t it?”

She nodded her head and gave me a little smile before rejoining her classmates. As I waved goodbye to the students, I prayed that God would heal that little girl’s heart, and I thanked Him for allowing me to be there that day.

That encounter was confirmation that God had truly given me the words for my upcoming picture book, “Love Connects Us All”—a book featuring all different kids of families with the overall message that each one of us is a part of God’s big, beautiful family.

I wrote this book because I wanted all children—like the little girl who came from a single-parent household—to find themselves in the pages of my book and celebrate their special families.

Two verses of “Love Connects Us All” says:

“I’m thankful for my family—

this one that God designed.

My family might be different,

but it’s my favorite kind.”

“And there is more to praise Him for—

I’m in God’s family, too!

I am a precious child of God.

And guess what? So are you!”

The book ends with a special prayer: “Thank You, God, for my family. It’s not like any other family—that’s what makes it so special! I am so grateful for the love we share. And I’m so thankful because I’m in Your family, God. Amen.”

Our words, whether written for children or adults, hold great power. They can encourage, empower, educate, and comfort our readers. They can bring much-needed laughter, and they can provide a temporary escape into the world of story. As Christian writers, we can make a difference, and just knowing that fact, should drive us to put in the hours studying the craft, learning the market, revising and rewriting, praying over every word, and promoting our books so they can go everyplace they were intended to go and do the work they were destined to do.

I’m not saying that as Christian writers we are expected to have all the answers, but I am saying this—we know the One who does! He can help us help our readers! And it’s our privilege to hold the hands of our readers and walk them through these difficult situations.

Because love really does connect us all.

What is a family made of?

It can be hard to describe sometimes … but every family has the same thing: love!

Whether someone has step siblings or has lived in foster care or no matter what the size of their family—love connects everyone. It’s moms and dads and pets and friends, and aunts and uncles, too. It’s grandparents and godparents—The ones who treasure you.

In eloquently written rhyme, Michelle Medlock Adams helps readers to see family in a new light. That family isn’t determined by DNA or location—but by the precious love given and received.

After all, we’re all part of a beautiful family of a very loving God.

My Review of the Abide Bible:

This Bible is well-planned, organized and helpful.

I love that it comes in a nice box cover that shields the Bible. When I first opened the box and laid my hands on the Abide Bible, the first thing I noticed was how soft and smooth the material from front to back and the spine. It put me at ease.

As I’ve been studying this Bible for the past few weeks, I found that it’s easy to understand. The features such as the explanation of the background and historical context of every book in this Bible really set the scene for me and helped me go into each book that I read with greater understanding.

The font style and size throughout this book are very easy to read.

I was able to go deeper into God’s Word when I followed the study prompts on the sidebars of most pages. These prompts challenged me to pray using Scripture, picture the story in my head, journal about what I read, engage through the art that portray scriptural truths, and contemplate what God is teaching me through His Word before moving onto the next chapter.

I highly recommend this Bible to anyone and everyone who wants to grow closer to God and understand His Word on a deeper level.

Movie Review for "The Thursday Night Club" and a Christmas gift for you!

My Review of The Thursday Night Club movie:

Today, I have another movie review for you and a giveaway contest at the end of this post!

Pure Flix is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony Pictures Entertainment, alongside AFFIRM Films.

Pure Flix VIP Ambassador program asked me to review the movie The Thursday Night Club. I watched this heartwarming movie earlier tonight (Nov. 26), after it was made available for viewing on Pure Flix. The Thursday Night Club movie drew me in from the start and kept me in my seat waiting to see how the story unfolded.

I’m eager to share my review with you. First, I’d like to describe the storyline in the words of talking points from Momentum then I’ll share my thoughts (review).

Here’s the synopsis of the movie:

This Christmas, be reminded what true friendship and true service to others look like by watching The Thursday Night Club with your family.

The Thursday Night Club
centers on a group of best college friends who meet every Thursday night for dinner and juggle their course load, jobs and hobbies. Victor and his daughter Jesse always pick a special Christmas charity project each year. Victor challenges the group of friends to think beyond their own lives, and tries to persuade the group to pick a project they are passionate about. Victor tells them they will see signs from God to guide them.

Everything changes when Victor is killed in a wrong-way driver accident right before Christmas. This group of friends are faced with new opportunities and challenges that push them out of their comfort zones and cause them to grow up in wonderful ways. Such as: Ava has an opportunity to volunteer at an assisted living home. Izzy meets a man working to expand the bone marrow registry and she has an opportunity to be a donor. Randy is reminded of a memory of his absent father. Kevin’s dad is laid off and is forced to figure out how to keep paying for college. Jesse grieves her loss and through the kindness of others, finds her purpose.

Now for my review:

The Thursday Night Club is a wonderful movie with a whole lot of hope and a whole lot of heart.

I was impressed how the writers made this story filled with plot twists, highs and lows, come together in the most beautiful way. The acting was well-done. The characters were multilayered and unique to their own. I appreciated the diversity of the group of friends whose lives the audience follows as they watch The Thursday Night Club.

There were things that caught me by surprise and there were moments that took my breath away. This movie was incredibly well-done. The casting director picked the perfect people to play each main and supporting character. The director of photography did a great job capturing the scenes in a way that makes the viewer feel like they are in the picture with the stars, watching this movie unfold on set with the actors.

I’d say to gather your family and friends to watch this movie together this Christmas. Enjoy a cup of cocoa or apple cider and be prepared for this story to warm your heart.

Themes of this movie included:
Charity
Kindness
Paying it forward
Spending time helping others
Making a difference
Opening yourself to God’s calling and purpose for your life
Signs from God
