Devotionals for the Heart: How to love someone who is experiencing grief

How to Love Someone Whose Grief Hides Behind a Smile
A devotional by Patti Schultz, Ed.D.

Note: July is Bereaved Parents Awareness Month. It is a time to remember and sit gently with those who carry the weight of losing a child, at any age or stage.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
—Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

She's the first face you see on Sunday mornings with bright blonde hair, a hand on the door, blue eyes that crinkle at the corners because the smile is the real kind, the kind that reaches all the way up. In her thirties, she remembers names, personal life stories, prayer requests, and little triumphs to cheer you on and praise God for.

What most people at the door don't know is how many babies have been said goodbye to. Enough to be a soccer team. But that number is carried quietly. It is folded small enough to fit behind that smile every week. No one hears about the nurseries never used, the due dates that came and went with empty arms, or the anniversary dates only a numb, grieving couple remembers. The bulletin still gets handed over. “How was your week?” is a question that still gets asked and meant.

It's easy to mistake this kind of joy for a life untouched by sorrow. But grief rarely announces itself. More often, it greets you warmly at the door and goes home to a quiet house. You don't have to have buried a child to know someone carrying an absence like that. And once you know, a natural question follows: What do I do with this?

If you know a woman who is suffering in silence and want to help, just love her well. Here are a few good ways to do that:

Say the name.
If you know the name(s) of the child(ren), use them. Avoiding the name does not protect them from the pain.

Remember the date, not just the moment. A due date, a birthday, a loss anniversary. A short text like “thinking of you and (the baby’s name) today” on that date means more than anything said in the immediate aftermath.

Let go of timelines. Grief doesn't resolve on a schedule. Someone can be five, ten, or twenty years out and still be undone by a certain song or an aisle at the store. It is not a setback. It is pure love with nowhere to go.

Sit in the discomfort instead of filling it. You don't need the right words. “I don't know what to say, but I'm here” is often more healing.

Psalm 34:18 does not say God is close to the healed or those who've moved on. It says He is close to the brokenhearted. It is present tense, in the middle of the breaking. But Scripture doesn't stop at describing God's posture; it gives us one too. The Apostle Paul wrote these words in the Bible: “Mourn with those who mourn” (Romans 12:15) and “Carry each other's burdens” (Galatians 6:2).

Notice that neither verse says “fix” or “explain”. They say mourn with and carry. That's the whole assignment—walk close enough that she isn't carrying it alone.

Let’s Pray:

Lord,

You see the empty chair and the dates that ache. Be close to every parent carrying a loss the world can't fully see. Give me eyes to see the grief hidden behind a smile and the humility to know I won't ever fully understand it. Take away my need to say something perfect and replace it with the willingness to simply stay. Show me the names, the dates, and the small moments where love is needed most. Mold me into someone who mourns with those who mourn.

In Jesus’ Name.

Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: When you realize God is writing your life story

All the Little Stories Becoming One
A devotional by Jessica Brodie

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”—Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)

Have you ever looked back on your life and been struck by how it all seems to fit together like a pattern you couldn’t see while you were living it?

I released my third Christian contemporary novel recently, Hidden Seeds, and during an interview with a news publication, something hit me like a splash of cold water: these books are an echo of the work I’ve been doing for the last 16 years.

Sixteen years ago this month, I was hired as editor of a Christian denominational newspaper called the
South Carolina United Methodist Advocate, and my life has changed in so many wonderful ways since. I was already a Christian when I started, but my faith walk deepened significantly once I took the position. How could it not? I was surrounded by pastors and church leaders consistently modeling discipleship, day after day. And as the primary writer for the publication, month after month—for 16 years—I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to write about churches, pastors, and everyday Christians doing God’s work. That work takes every imaginable form: coffee ministries, reaching the unchurched through robotics, faith-based summer camps, mission trips, and so much more.

As I spoke with the interviewer, I heard myself say: “So many of the people, the ministries, and the stories from these last 16 years as a Christian journalist are peppered throughout the entire series of novels.” The realization was profound—and it filled me with overwhelming gratitude.

These 16 years have shaped me on a soul level like nothing else. I’ve always been grateful, always loved this work, and I’ve always known I’m blessed to hold this position. But it had never quite hit me this way before. Now I understand: Being a storyteller has changed me. In the telling, I’ve been transformed, inspired, and made new. To learn firsthand from the people who lived these stories, then to share them with others? What a glorious thing.

Now, looking back over the books I have written—and knowing the story for Book 4 that is already taking shape in my mind—I see how these years and all their stories are intricately woven into the characters and the town. As the saying goes, “You cannot pour from an empty cup.” Well, apparently, I’ve been pouring from a cup brimming with evidence of God’s people doing his will all across this state. That abundance lives in the pages of the Advocate . . . and within my novels.

Life gets hectic, and our thoughts get weighed down by daily concerns and distractions. We forget to step back, to take the long view, to marvel at what God is doing in the full sweep of our lives. It reminds me of watching my kids grow. Because I’m with them every single day, I don’t notice the slow climb from 4-foot-11 to 5-foot-1 to 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-10—until one day I look over and realize they’re taller than I am. That’s what happened to me in this moment of recognition.

God is the master storyteller, and He weaves all our little stories into His grand narrative—even when we can’t see it happening.

So, I want to ask you: What stories are quietly accumulating in your own life right now? What experiences, relationships, or seasons might be more connected than they appear? We don’t always get to see the pattern while we’re living inside it. But it’s there. God is writing something in you, through you. And one day, if you stop and look, you just might catch a glimpse of the whole beautiful design.

Let’s Pray: Lord, thank You for the opportunities you give me in life. Even if I can’t see the plan, I know you are behind the scenes, working it all out for your good and your glory. Help me hold fast to gratitude and trust your will and all the ways you are using me. In Jesus’s Name, I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: When God uses struggles to strengthen you

The Necessary Struggle

A devotional by Heidi Lewis-Ivey

“But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.”
—1 Peter 5:10 (KJV)

Nobody tells you that growth feels like breaking.

I know this because I had to eulogize my aunt, my hero, the cornerstone of my family, while I was still figuring out how to breathe without her. I stood up and found words for everyone else’s grief while mine was still raw, still unprocessed, still too big to name.

They show you the before and after, the transformation, the glow-up, the redemption and skip over the part where you were on the bathroom floor at 2:00 in the morning wondering if you will ever feel like yourself again. They skip the months when you couldn’t tell if you were healing or just getting better at pretending. I’ve been thinking about that gap a lot. The space between who you were and who you’re becoming. Nobody warns you how long you live in that space. How uncomfortable it is to exist in the middle of your own story, without knowing how it ends.

Here’s what I’ve come to believe:
The struggle isn’t a detour. It is the road.

We’ve been sold this idea that difficulty is a sign something has gone wrong. That if you’re suffering, you must have made a wrong turn or picked the wrong career, the wrong relationship, the wrong path. So, we spend enormous energy trying to outrun the hard parts, or numb them, or at least make them look more bearable on the outside.

But what if the friction is the point?

Muscles don’t grow without resistance. A person doesn’t either. Not real growth, not the kind that changes how you see yourself, how you move through the world, what you’re willing to tolerate and what you’re not. That kind of change requires pressure. It requires uncomfortable confrontation with your own limits.

The struggle isn’t proof you’re failing. It’s often proof you’re in the middle of something that matters. I’m not romanticizing suffering. Let me be clear about that.

There is suffering that serves nothing and grinds you down without teaching you anything, that you should walk away from if you can. Not all pain is meaningful. Not all hard things are worth enduring. Some struggles are just bad situations you need to exit. But there’s another kind. The kind that comes from choosing something difficult on purpose and starting over, telling the truth, walking away from what felt safe, asking for help when your whole identity was built around not needing it. That struggle is different. That struggle has direction to it.

The question I’ve learned to ask myself is: Is this hard because I’m growing, or hard because I’m ignoring something? The answer changes everything about what to do next. The hardest part of my own necessary struggles hasn’t been the struggle itself. It’s been resisting the urge to rush through it.

We want resolution. We want to arrive. We want to be the person who has already figured it out, not the person still in the middle of figuring it out. So, we skip steps. We declare ourselves healed before we are. We perform the after before we’ve lived through the during.

And then we wonder why the same patterns keep showing up. There’s no shortcut through the necessary struggles. You have to let them take the time they take. You have to sit in the discomfort long enough to learn what it’s trying to teach you.

That’s the part no one wants to hear. But it’s the only part that’s true.

There’s a promise in 1 Peter 5:10 that I keep coming back to. It says, “after you have suffered a while, God himself will make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.”

Four words. Four distinct things. And I don’t think they’re accidental. Let’s examine each word:

Perfect means not flawless, but complete. Whole in ways you weren’t before. The broken places filled in.

Stablish means established. Rooted. Fixed to something that holds even when the ground moves.

Strengthen means not just surviving, but capable. Able to carry what you couldn’t carry before.

Settle means that deep, quiet thing. The internal stillness that does not depend on your circumstances being calm.

Notice what all four of these words have in common: None of them are possible without the suffering that precedes them. You can’t be settled without having first been shaken. You can’t be strengthened without having first been stretched. The struggle isn’t the enemy of the outcome; it’s the condition for it.

If you’re in the midst of something hard right now that you chose or that chose you, I want you to know something: The fact that it’s hard doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. The fact that you’re not okay yet doesn’t mean you won’t be. The fact that you can’t see the other side doesn’t mean there isn’t one.

Remember, God promises to restore you “after you have suffered a while”. Not forever. A while. There is a duration to this, even when it doesn’t feel like it. And on the other side of it not despite the suffering but through it you will be more complete, more rooted, more capable, more settled than you have ever been.

Some of the most important becoming of your life is happening in the moments that feel the least like progress. Keep going. Not because it will get easier immediately. But because you are, right now, being built into something stronger than what you were whether it feels like it or not.

The struggle is necessary. So are you.

Let’s Pray:

Lord,

I come on behalf of everyone reading this who is in the middle of something hard—the ones holding it together on the outside while quietly falling apart within. The ones who have cried in the car, in the shower, in the silence of 3:00 in the morning when the rest of the world is asleep. The ones who are grieving for what they lost, what they never had, or who they used to be.

Meet them here. Not on the other side of this, but here. In the thick of it. In the mess and the confusion and the exhaustion of a struggle that has gone on longer than they thought they could bear.

Remind them that You are not absent from their pain. That You are not waiting for them to get it together before You show up. That You are close to the brokenhearted—not close to the healed, not close to the finished, but close to the broken, right now, exactly as they are.

And Lord, let Your promise in 1 Peter 5:10 be real to them today—that this suffering has a while on it. That is not permanent. That on the other side of this, You will make them perfect, stablish, strengthen, and settle them in ways they cannot yet imagine.

Do what only You can do in what they are walking through. Make them whole where they are broken. Root them where they have been shaken. Strengthen them where they have been emptied. Settle them where there has only been chaos.

And until that day, give them just enough grace for today. Just enough strength for this moment. Just enough hope to keep going. They are not forgotten. They are not forsaken. They are being formed.

In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.

Interview with the authors of "Unexpected Blessings" (devo book)

Interview with the authors of
“Unexpected Blessings: 40 Days of Trusting God in the Details”

Question #1: How did you and your co-authors meet?

Deborah:
In Spring 2024, we formed a small Zoom-based writers' mastermind to help each other flourish. We were previously meeting via Facebook chat that Theresa set up after we had all been her Beta Readers for her Bible Study, “Posture of Victory.” Plus, we are all Compel Pro Group Leaders. Soon, God led us to write something much bigger than we planned with our first book, “Unexpected Blessings: 40 Days of Discovering God’s Best”, and now our newest book, “Unexpected Blessings: 40 Days of Trusting God in the Details.” We are five writers in five different states with a God-sized project who said yes. Only God could orchestrate five writers from five different states coming together to create this devotional book for our readers. All glory to Him!

Question #2:
What inspired you to collaborate with your author friends and write this devotional book? Share the story.

Theresa: This is such a fun story because it really was all God. None of us could have orchestrated it with a premeditated plan and watched it unfold so seamlessly. It began as a simple idea among five writers to create a downloadable resource for readers called Unexpected Blessings: 30 Days of Discovering God’s Best. It was meant to be a small offering of encouragement to our community. On one of our Zoom calls, one of us suggested, “What if we took this all the way?” The idea was to write ten additional devotions, two from each of us, and turn that online resource into a 40-day printed devotional. The downloadable resource was released in November, and we spent December writing the extra devotions. Then we spent January preparing the manuscript for publication. The book was released just before Lent in 2025. Even before that first book was published, we sensed God nudging us toward a second one. What began as a small step of obedience became a series of little “yeses,” growing into something we could not have planned better ourselves.

Question #3:
What was the most challenging aspect of collaborating to write this book? Explain how you overcame that challenge.

Nichole: So much of this project felt seamless. We shared a Google Drive folder to upload all our devotions and set deadlines to keep ourselves on track. It’s hard to say there were many challenges! Mostly, what was challenging is what is challenging with just about any writing project—editing the final manuscript. It was a joint effort of Traci checking formatting, Theresa checking grammar, spelling, and sentence structure, each of us fixing our own edits, and then I put the final manuscript into a form that could be uploaded and published. We were all working from a distance; none of us is close enough to each other to easily meet in person. So, a lot of communication was through group text. We had to be open to feedback from one another and flexible about how each of us envisioned the final product.

Question #4: In what ways do you hope your readers will be impacted by your message?

Susan: We want our readers to know that, whether it is the everyday struggles and disappointments we often encounter or the hard challenges we face, we are never the only ones who battle them. The enemy used to push me into a corner with the lie that I am the only one who has to battle what I have walked through. But whether it's struggling with doubt, fear, or even the lows from a bad day, we all go through the same things. And because we serve a faithful God, we never go through anything that we can’t overcome or walk through in the power and strength of the Holy Spirit. We truly serve a God who can turn everything we go through into our good and His glory.

Question #5: Is this the second book in a series of “Unexpected Blessings” or can this devo be read as standalone? Please explain.

Traci: While this book, Unexpected Blessings: 40 Days of Trusting God in the Details, is the second in our Unexpected Blessings series, it can also be read as a standalone devotional, just like our first book, Unexpected Blessings: 40 Days of Discovering God’s Best. Our goal for this series is for each book to stand on its own while helping readers recognize God’s extraordinary blessings and trust Him in the details of their everyday lives.

Question #6: In this devo book, you teach readers to trust God no matter how overwhelmed they feel. How have you learned to trust God when you feel overwhelmed by the demands of daily life?

Traci:
I used to let overwhelming circumstances and the demands of daily life define me, and as a result, I lived with constant worry and intense anxiety. For many years, I missed out on the abundant life Jesus Christ came to give. Don’t get me wrong—life is filled with real concerns and overwhelming emotions, but God’s Word reminds us in 1 Peter 5:7 to cast our anxieties on Him. So what does that look like in my life? I picture myself laying down the pressures of daily life—schedules, work, family needs, and ministry—along with the emotions that come from them, at the foot of the Cross. Because of how I lived in the past, I know what it feels like to live under that kind of weight. Now, I choose to trust God because I know that is the only way I can live in true freedom and peace in the midst of everyday demands. God’s desire for us as His children is to live with hearts that trust Him and fully depend on Him.

Nichole:
Overwhelm—in the negative sense—is a product of a fallen world. Our Heavenly Father doesn’t want us in that state. Whenever I start to feel like life’s pressures are overwhelming me, I know I need to go back to Jesus and ask Him to remove the yoke I’ve taken on myself. He promises that His yoke is easy and His burden is light. We take on a burden that we were never meant to shoulder. Daily immersion in the Word and constant communication with the Father help me keep things in perspective and lessen the overwhelm that life’s demands bring.

Question #7:
What would you say to someone who feels like they’re experiencing a difficult time when God isn’t answering their prayers, and they feel like their delayed plans and dashed dreams feel too insignificant to matter? Explain how we can trust God because it matters to Him.

Susan: It took me years to learn that just because God doesn’t answer the way I want doesn’t mean I don’t matter or that I've been forgotten. Sometimes God is working more for my good through not answering my specific prayers or not bringing my personal desires to fruition. I often learn and grow spiritually more when He allows me to wait and endure delays. It is then that He teaches me much-needed lessons, such as perseverance, temperance, long suffering, and patience. It is also during the long waits that I often feel I don’t matter, that God is teaching me how to draw closer to Him.

Theresa:
This is something I’ve experienced many times, and I know we all do at different points in our lives. What I’ve learned is that often what feels like a delay is God working behind the scenes. It’s a time of preparation, a season where God invites us to lean in and trust Him more deeply. It reminds me of Traci’s devotion on the theme of blooming where you are planted in “The Unexpected Blessing of a Broken Plaque.” Sometimes God invites us to grow deeper roots during those dismal seasons so that something beautiful can bloom in His perfect timing. If you’re feeling this way now, my encouragement is to be faithful with what God has placed in your hands today and to trust that He has something in store for you beyond your imagination if you don’t give up. So keep going!

Question #8:
Share a testimony from your life when God showed you that He cares about your quiet struggles and He wants to alleviate what’s weighing heavy on your heart.

Deborah: Just recently, I was feeling put together on the outside yet falling apart on the inside. As a childless older woman, I was having a hard time fitting in at our church full of young families. I prayed, “Help me Jesus,” and He brought me a new friend to share my fears and burden with. Soon, I felt the comfort and peace of Jesus and rejoiced in my beautiful church family. I know I am not the only one feeling this way. It’s so easy, though, to think everyone else has got it together when maybe we’re all feeling a little messy inside. The beautiful truth is Jesus didn’t come for the perfect woman, He came for the messy and brokenhearted ones too.

Traci: One memory that comes to mind is a season when I quietly struggled with Imposter Syndrome. I felt completely unqualified for an opportunity God had given me, and the weight of doubt brought me to tears. When I shared my struggle with my son and later with a friend, God met me through their prayer and encouragement, easing the heaviness in my heart and giving me the strength to move forward. That moment taught me that God not only sees our silent struggles but also cares deeply about them, often providing comfort, strength, and peace in very personal ways. I actually wrote about this testimony in our first book in the series, Unexpected Blessings: 40 Days of Discovering God’s Best.

Question #9:
I love how each of you as authors shared honest reflections from your real-life experiences over the years, in this devo book! What did God teach you or reveal to you during this process of sharing your stories?

Susan:
Most of the time, when I write and share, it is during my own struggles and challenges. One of the greatest lessons I have learned from sharing my personal stories and lessons God is teaching me is that the more I share encouragement with others, the more I feel encouraged. Writing the devotions for this book has also taught me to be more mindful of looking for God’s blessings, especially in the ordinary day-to-day things. It is so easy to go through your day with your mind on completing tasks and to-do lists that we can forget to look up to see what God is doing all around us. Writing these devotions has made me more mindful to ask God to reveal Himself to me and help me to encounter His goodness.

Theresa:
Sharing these real-life experiences has given us the chance to be honest and transparent and to reveal the transformative work of God through them. So many moments could have gone unnoticed, yet God is truly in the details. The more we look for Him, the more we see Him at work. That has certainly been true for me throughout the process of writing these devotions.

Question #10:
Let’s end with a fun question! What is your favorite beverage, coffee or tea to sip in the springtime? Take turns answering this question, please, and explain what makes that favorite treat special to you.

Theresa:
The hardest question yet! After my first cup of coffee in the morning, I’m a hot tea drinker. Mint is my go-to, but if I can handle a little caffeine later in the day, the Earl Grey London Fog beverage Nichole describes below is my go-to. My version is tea, honey, and a little cream–the same way I drink my coffee. Springtime allows for hot drinks around here, as winter can last through April and even into May some years.

Susan:
I am from the south and grew up drinking iced tea. There is nothing more relaxing to me than sitting on my porch swing with a good book, sipping on my favorite tea. It is even more special after a long, cold winter to get that first burst of warmer spring weather to sit outside. My favorite teas are blackberry and strawberry.

Traci: Growing up in the Midwest, I loved drinking pop. A lot of people have no idea what I mean when I say that word. But in southern Ohio, where I’m from, “pop” is what we call any carbonated soft drink, no matter the flavor—cola, lemon-lime, orange, grape, ginger ale, and more. It’s what some people call “soda” or “Coke,” depending on where they live. While I don’t drink much pop anymore because I don’t love the sugar and calories in regular, and I can’t stand the taste of diet, I still enjoy sipping an ice-cold Pepsi on my porch every now and then as the weather warms up. It feels like a little springtime treat to me. In fact, my neighbor always has one cold and ready for me whenever I go over to visit her.

Deborah: I love making mason jars full of PG Tips iced tea. There is something about letting it brew and then later adding ice cubes. I don’t add anything else to it. It’s perfect to sip as my afternoon goes by, as the days warm with a book on the deck.

Nichole: I love Earl Grey tea anytime of year, especially when I make it into a London Fog (tea, steamed milk, and vanilla syrup). I prefer hot instead of iced year-round. I live in the Midwest, so it stays cool and rainy through the Spring. Sitting on my covered porch with a cup of hot tea is high-end cozy for me.

Thanks for the interview, ladies! God bless you and your writing ministry.

Book Spotlight on "God, Where Are You?" by Dominique Young

GOD, WHERE ARE YOU?: The Book That Started as A Cry!
A guest post by Dominique Young

The book “God, Where Are You?” was not something I dreamed of writing since I was young.

In fact, I never actually thought I was capable of writing a book. This book came from navigating a place of pain with God and learning that He is with us in our pain.

Let me tell you the story.

When I was pregnant with my second son I was struggling with mental health issues, depression, anxiety and what I what I would later find out was perinatal psychosis. To be honest I had been struggling with my mental health for years before this point, but I kept it hidden.

I thought that being a good Christian and having the right faith meant that I didn’t go through these things. The presence of mental health struggles in my life made me feel like I was an unworthy embarrassment to Jesus Christ. I wanted to fix myself before anyone else found out I was a Christian imposter.

So, I kept my mental health struggles silent, I went into prayer lines and never told the person what to pray for and just said “pray as the spirit leads” hoping that someone would pray the exact right prayer to make all this pain go away. I read all the books on how to pray. But nothing was working and one day, after a massive mental breakdown I landed in a mental hospital on a 72-hour hold, because after taking myself to the hospital voluntarily and explaining to the doctor was happening, he surmised that I was a danger to myself and others.

This was the moment that changed everything and little did I know that this would be the moment that would be the catalyst for this book. I cried in that hospital asking over and over again, “God, where are you?” After being released I was determined to find God. I was determined to understand why He wasn’t helping me.

This search for God took me on an amazing journey of reading the Bible cover to cover multiple times, starting Bible studies with groups of women and listening intently as they shared, learning from each person in the room, enrolling in seminary and spending countless hours in prayer. What started out as a complaint to God and a frustration at God for not healing me the way I wanted ended up being a journey of amazing discovery.

It wasn’t until 2023 that I realized that God wanted me to write a book, and not just any book, a book that walked alongside people on journey of discovering God in the middle of pain.

My personal journey was really broken into three phases, I didn’t realize that when I was walking through it, but in hindsight I could see it clearly. First, I found myself. I was hiding and without coming out of hiding, I wouldn’t be able to see God. My face was so very masked and as you know masks at times disrupt your vision. Next on my journey I found God. I found that He was with me in ways I could never imagine, which actually confused me because if He is with me why didn’t He stop the pain?

That question brought me to the leg of my journey that honestly, I am still in today which is learning that it’s about more that God zapping away all my problems it’s about God being with me through them and me being with Him through them. It’s about relationship.

I felt led by the Holy Spirit to walk with others on their journey in 2023. I hope to encourage them through my own story to be willing to discover God within the pages of their own story.

Honestly “God, Where are You?” did not start out as a book in my life. It began as a cry and that cry turned into a tear-filled journey. And that journey, by God’s grace and through the support of Jevon Bolden (my literary agent) and NavPress (my book publisher), it is now a book that can serve as a travel companion for others on the journey of finding God in pain, grief, depression, and darkness.
