What’s In Your Hand?

Then the Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?”

—Exodus 4:2 (NIV)

We carry many things in our hands. Keys. Food. Backpack. A loved one’s hand. Money. A tool. And many of these things are quite useful throughout our day.

If you are a chef, then a sharp knife is essential. If you are a dog trainer, then a leash along with dog treats is in order. If you are a mommy, then your empty hands are needed to help, guide, carry and comfort a child.

What we carry in our hands can be used by God, if we let Him. Moses had just been called by God to go to Pharoah to bring His people, the Israelites, out of Egypt (Exodus 3:10). Moses had met God via a burning bush (Exodus 3:1-6). It was then when Moses received a call from God and the instructions of what his life would look like from here on out. But he had some questions for God first.

Moses asked God for a sign—multiple ones, even though he had just had the burning bush experience in which God’s voice was heard from a fire-engulfed bush that was not consumed by the fire. Perhaps Moses was afraid to step out into the wide unknown. Maybe that is why he asked God for a sign. God answered Moses by telling him to look at his hand then gave him the sign he needed. Has this ever happened to you? You feel a nudging from God to do something new to you and you do not know where to begin. Maybe you have many different hobbies, interests, and likes, but they don’t necessarily go together except at a salad bar.

This does not matter to God. He takes all things and uses them for His glory. Even our experiences from the past such as the pain, the betrayal, the unforgiveness, and the secret parts of our lives we don’t share because they are too private. God can use it all to transform us and inspire others to know Him on a personal level.

God is a creative God. His creativity is displayed around is in His creation. Animals like the wildebeest, a zebra, a giraffe, a monkey or a hippo are unique in appearance. I saw all these animals on a recent trip to a safari park in East Africa. On that safari, I saw how creative God is in the colors and patterns He chose to incorporate in animals. He was creative because it was in His hand to be creative. It is God’s nature and we are the ones who benefit from the works of His hands.

Before this trip to a safari, God used what was in my hand in a very unexpected way. My husband and I were going to Tanzania for him to teach at a Bible college and I had different teaching type things I was going to do. I had a lot of free time after I completed my assignment. The missionaries we were working with asked me if I had any hobbies or interests. I replied yes and mentioned my passion for sewing garments. And I have a passion for helping women sew garments for themselves, their families, and as a business.

She asked if I could hold a day-long seminar to demonstrate making products for themselves. I began drafting patterns, getting them in Swahili and praying about this day. When we arrived in Tanzania a month ago, that one day seminar turned into a sewing clinic at the training center of the mission. It was going to be a month-long clinic where students lived at the center, learned how to use a treadle sewing machine, learn a skill, how to manage a small business and a budget, and learn more about Jesus Christ.

What I do for personal interest for myself and others (and mine is not a business), became used by God for others to make a living for themselves and their families.

When I saw the training center for the first time getting painted and ready for the 11 students, plus the 15 new treadle machines (electricity is not that reliable), I was overcome. God was using what was in my hand. I thought I was going to teach one small class in something I consider a hobby, where God was using it to reach more for His glory and His work.

I did not ask God for a sign, rather He gave me a powerful lesson on obedience. We went out of obedience to Tanzania. We do not go for the ‘adventure’, nor did we go because we had not been to Africa before. We went because God called us to go. We went because He had something for us to do. We went because of obedience and love. And we received way more than we gave.

Let’s Pray: Father, I have stuff in my hands, but I am not sure if it can be useful for You and I want to glorify and honor You with what I have in my hands. Show me Lord what it is You want me to give to You. I don’t necessarily need a sign, rather a direction on how to use what You have given me for Your kingdom purposes. I lay (fill in the blank) at Your feet, for Your use. And I do it willingly. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

My Review of "The Sacred Thread"

When Momentum Influencers Network (MIN) asked me to review “The Sacred Thread” docuseries by Angel Studios, I agreed because it sounded like a wonderful opportunity to dig deeper into God’s Word (The Holy Bible) and understand what The Lord’s Prayer truly means, which is what this series is centered on. After watching all seven episodes that were each about 30 minutes long, I had a better understanding of The Lord’s Prayer. Now, I want to share my review of this helpful resource with you!

But before I share my review with you, I’d like to share a few words from Momentum Influencers Network about this inspirational docuseries:

My Review of “The Sacred Thread” series:

“The Sacred Thread” series is hosted by Brad Gray. Everything about this docuseries is well done. It is equally educational as it is inspirational.

The cinematic storytelling style of this series truly drew me in. I couldn’t stop watching it so I binge-watched all seven episodes in only two days.

I appreciated the deep dive into the culture and heritage of the people who lived in the ancient world during the time the Bible was being written. It helped me understand the historical context and background of the Bible. I also appreciated that each episode was no more than 30 minutes long because that made it easier to digest. The way each episode was structured proved to be clear, concise and very rich in the story being told.

Every episode was informational and inspiring in a way that stays with you. But the one that resonated with me most deeply was the third episode, titled, “Holy Be Your Name”. This is what stood out to me:

I was impressed to learn what it means to hallow God’s name. They said that taking the Lord’s name in vain doesn’t mean to use His name as a swear word; it means misrepresenting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. It reminds me of the Gospel music song “Wear Your Name” by Gylchris Sprauve.

I loved learning about how the term for the rich color “Royal blue” was coined and learning why God wanted His people to have this color on the clothes they wore. Brad Gray (the host) said, “Blue held significant value in the ancient world because it was arduous to make and hard to come by. This was a color used only for people of high standing or of royalty. Hence, the designation “Royal blue” and God called His people to have this color on them.”

Blue, purple and scarlet were the principal colors in the Tabernacle design. And therefore, they played the leading role in the visual representation of God’s dwelling here on Earth. Another fact: Blue was the predominant color of the clothes work by the high priests. They said, “The high priests and the priests were responsible for mediating on behalf of God to the Israelites. But the Israelites as a whole were responsible for mediating on behalf of God to the rest of the world. And that blue cord was a reminder of their identity and mission as a kingdom of priests.”

They also said, “The other implication for why God chose blue revolved around status. Remember, the Israelites prior to the exodus had the identity of slaves. Now, they’re being instructed to wear blue, the color of royalty. From rags to royalty quite literally. God wanted His people to remember daily who they were. So, when they looked down and saw the blue cord contrasting against the white ones, they were reminded that they wore the priestly color, they carried the name of God and they were valued as treasured royalty.”

The final powerful point that they said during this episode was about salt and its Biblical role in Christian living. They said, “While we think of salt primarily as a seasoning, in a world without refrigeration, salt was used as a preservative to make food last longer. And because of this, salt became a symbol in the Hebrew Scriptures for God’s long lasting covenant faithfulness to His people. So, when Jesus says you are the salt of the earth, He’s saying that’s you, that’s your identity. When you follow God’s commandments and carry His name well, you’re preserving life in a world of decay.”

All the episodes were good but this one (Episode 3) was the most well-thought, planned and presented one that really had special significance that can apply to our journey with Jesus Christ in our modern-day era. I was most inspired by this one.

Each episode focuses on a verse of The Lord’s Prayer then breaks it down with historical context and Biblical accuracy. The way this is done is second to none. My Review of the She Reads Truth Spiral-Bound Notetaking Bible

When Momentum Influencers Network (MIN) asked me to review the She Reads Truth Spiral-Bound Notetaking Bible, I readily agreed because I love reading God’s Word (The Holy Bible) and sharing it with everyone!

But before I share my review with you, I’d like to share a word from Momentum Influencers Network and a few notes from me about this product:

Before reading this Bible, I was familiar with the She Reads Truth ministry for women. I must admit, this notetaking Bible does not disappoint!

My Review of the She Reads Truth Notetaking Bible for the New Testament:

The first thing I noticed was how big and heavy this product is…so huge that you would think it contains the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation inside. But true to the title written horizontally on the far-right side of the cover, this book only contains the New Testament (Matthew through Revelation) of The Bible.

I found the spiral ring binding of this book to be a bit problematic because it often got stuck when I tried to open the book and turn the pages. I also think that while the cover subtle gray cover with a hue of gold and bronze is pretty, the font size for title of this Bible is too small and can almost be missed where it is positioned.

The first page you see when you open this book is neatly laid out, clearly written and easy to read. The designer and publisher used white space perfectly on this page. I think it is impressive that two women (Raechel Meyers and Amanda Bible Williams) were the general editors for this edition. It is also impressive that the publisher (Andy McLean) has a Ph.D.

I appreciate the letter from the editor for the readers on the second page to the right. The tone was warm and welcoming. The letter was very comprehensive in describing who this edition is intended for (women) and how to get the most out of your Bible reading experience with the added details that speak to the heart of women who are following Jesus Christ.

The Table of Contents was neatly laid out and centered on one page. The next page instructs you how to read the New Testament. It is followed by a reading log that spans four pages. It is there where you can note the date when you studied each chapter of each book in this Bible.

This is followed by two pages spent on introducing the reader to the Christian Standard Bible (CSB) which is the translation for all the Scripture within this book. After that is one page explaining the abbreviations, you will see as you read this CSB translation. I thought this was helpful.

I liked the artwork on the back of the page that tells you are about to start reading the New Testament with the book of Matthew. The artwork features blue mountains and white cloudy skies. A Bible verse is written in the center. The color scheme calms your mind and prepares you to read God’s Word.

Before you read the first verse, there is a page that leads you into Matthew with a historical timeline, Biblical background, tells you the message and purpose of Matthew then provides a note of thanks for this book.

When you turn the page, you will see a detailed map of The Passion Week in Jerusalem. On the right page, you will see a detailed outline of this book (Matthew). The next page starts with verse one of chapter one of Matthew. I appreciated how easy it was to read because of the larger than usual font size and extra space between each verse. I also liked the lines set across the wide margins of every page so I can take notes as is the purpose of this edition of the Bible.

All the books in this Bible have the same format, layout and details that I described in the first book (Matthew). I appreciated the consistency and attention to detail.

The final page with text on it lists the names and titles of the people who contributed to this beautiful Bible and made it ready to read. I appreciated that they gave credit where credit is due.

After the page that lists the contributors, there are a few final pages that are each completely blank. Perhaps that is intended for the reader to take more notes, write a journal entry or create their own artwork based on what they read in this Bible.

Overall, I like this edition for women and recommend it to every female not only in the She Reads Truth community, but worldwide.

It Changes Everything to Know You Are Beloved

“A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”— John 13:34 (KJV)

There is a word that shows up all throughout the Bible. It is easily browsed over without much thought yet deserves a second look. The word is “beloved”.

Beloved is not said casually. It is not a compliment simply thrown around. Beloved, according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, means “dearly loved” and “dear to the heart”. I would also say that it means you are deeply loved, completely cherished, and fully valued. Most importantly, beloved is what God calls you. Being beloved is not based on accomplishments; it is about who you are at the core of your being. Beloved. Before you even took your first breath, before you did one thing, God loved you. In Jeremiah 31:3 (NIV), God says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.”

God’s everlasting love, like beloved, is not something earned. It is not, “I’ll love you if you get it right” or “I love you because you serve me.” It is simply, “I will love you forever.” No conditions or expectations. Everlasting love is love that is given freely, without requiring anything in return. In a world that is always telling us we must push harder and look better to prove our identity and worth, it is easy to feel like we will never measure up. But God looks at you, just as you are, and says, “You are enough. You are truly cherished and cared for. You are beloved because of my everlasting love for you.”

But what about when you mess up, are in a bad mood, or are plain outright mad at God for something you feel He failed to do for you? The answer is your being beloved does not change. Romans 5:8 (NIV) says, “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” That means God loves you even when you are at your worst. He loves your doubts, flaws, mess, and all.

No need to prove your worth to God your Creator. You do not need to measure up to earn His love or prove your value, because His love and value of you have already been determined. That truth changes everything. It frees you from trying to earn love and instead lets you live from love. It sets you free to live beloved, to show up in the world as someone who is so sure of God’s love that there is not room for proving anything.

What does it look like to live as beloved? Living as beloved means letting go of the striving to be loved. It means reminding yourself that your mistakes do not define you. Living beloved is living as the truest you. It holds space that allows you to live as a beloved child of God. And it means seeing and treating others as beloved too.

Therefore, the truth is you are beloved, so is the cranky neighbor next door that calls animal control every time your dog barks. So is the playground bully trying to find his or her place in the world. So is the struggling single parent who is always late for things, whose kids are unkempt, and who always needs something. Because you are fully loved (flaws and all) you can treat and love others without judgment. Just as in Jesus Christ we are beloved by God, so are those around us.

Right now, take a second. Breathe. Let this truth settle in: You are beloved. Say it aloud. “I am beloved.” Not someday. But right now. Just as you are.

Let knowing that you are beloved by God be your anchor when life feels overwhelming. Let being beloved speak louder than the lies that you do not and never will measure up. Let this truth move you to love others, not to prove anything, but from the fact that you are fully beloved. You are precious. You are priceless. You are beloved. Rest in this status.

Let’s Pray:

Dear God,

Thank You for loving me just as I am. Not for what I do, not for how well I perform but because You made me and call me beloved. Somedays it is hard to believe that, so help me hold onto this truth. When I forget, please remind me. Show me how to live fully loved and help me love others the same way. Thank You for calling me beloved. Help me to see myself how You see me. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.

My Review of the CSB Jesus Daily Bible:

There are a lot of features to love about this Bible and only a few things I didn’t like as I flipped through these sacred pages. These are my thoughts about it:

The cover design was a little bit too busy and intricate for my taste. The layout of the interior was neatly formatted. The pages felt crisp and smelled fresh like most new books do and that is always refreshing to the heart of most book readers.

The Introduction page is helpful for people who have not picked up a Bible and tried to read it yet. Written by a pastor, this introduction sets the stage for your Bible study time as it introduces you to the God who this beautiful book is written about and tells you about His Son (Jesus Christ) who is the Savior of the world.

The page next to the Introduction is titled “Christ at the Center of God’s Word” and it is an adequate continuation of introducing the reader to Jesus Christ and explaining why He is the center of the Bible. I like how it includes a short but sufficient list of tips on how to find Christ as you read this Bible. The first tip is especially helpful for new believers who are getting acquainted with God’s Word. The tip says, “If Jesus is not described explicitly in the text, look for him symbolically.” Very good advice!

The next few pages include text and graphics that explain to the reader how to read this Bible. It is very comprehensive but looks overwhelming in display. There is also a Daily Reading Plan that is very detailed as it provides the reader with a proper outline for this 52-week study of the entire Bible that begins with Genesis and ends with Revelation.

Before Week 1 of this Bible study starts, there is a page dedicated to introducing the reader to the Christian Standard Bible which is this book published by Holman Bible Publishers.

There is an introduction page for each week of this study and a summary of each week on the last page before the next week in this Bible. This is the first Bible I have read that is presented in this 52-week devotional format. I found it interesting yet compelling.

After the final week of the study, there is a CSB Concordance, and the last few pages contain what you see on most Bibles: A map of the Middle East and Eastern Africa where the Bible stories took place in real time.

I found this Bible to live up to its promise in the product description on Amazon when it says, “The CSB Jesus Daily Bible features the highly readable, highly reliable text of the Christian Standard Bible® (CSB). The CSB captures the Bible’s original meaning without sacrificing clarity, making it easier to engage with Scripture’s life-transforming message and to share it with others.”

I would recommend this “Jesus Daily Bible” most to new believers who are just getting to know God and follow Jesus Christ.

When You Let God Fight Your Battles

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

—Romans 8:37 (NIV)

The negative words echoed in the dark corridors of my mind: “You can’t start your own business! You don’t have the experience.”

Just as I was able to silence the noise, more words came rushing in like a flood: “Why would you want to do that anyway? There are other things out there that are much more meaningful.”

I made the terrible mistake of announcing my goals to my family and friends—the people who I thought would be the most supportive. I told them that I wanted to start a non-profit organization in order to assist those in prison with their transition to society. I beamed with pride as I explained how I felt God calling me to do this and that it had been a passion of mine for years. I presented the findings of my research that detailed the benefits of such a ministry. The positive impact on the lives of those in prison would be exponential, causing a ripple effect to their families and to the surrounding community. I was determined to make a difference in this world, but right then, I felt like the world was against me.

When God gives you a dream or a vision, sometimes it’s not for you to share with everyone who has a listening ear. There are people around you who are not always for you. I learned this simple lesson the hard way. I was crushed with disappointment by the ones who tried to convince me not to proceed with this new venture. I felt overwhelmed with doubt, and I started to question my skills and abilities. I wondered whether this huge task was suitable for me.

The enemy uses negative thoughts and limiting beliefs to paralyze us. His objective is to stop us from pursuing our purpose. But we serve a God who has overcome the enemy, and we too are overcomers because we belong to the Most High God! When God says yes, it doesn’t matter who says no.

I had to remind myself of God’s promises and the power that was available to me in His Word (The Holy Bible). I had to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). I had to recognize that I was not fighting against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil (Ephesians 6:12). I had to use the weapons of prayer and praise to defeat the enemy who saw my potential and tried so hard to shut it down before it even started.

We must look ourselves in the mirror daily and affirm God’s truth into our lives. Here are a few Bible verses that can help us in our endeavor to speak truth:

“The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid.” (Psalm 118:6 NIV)

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13 NKJV)

“No weapon formed against you shall prosper.” (Isaiah 54:17 NKJV)

“If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31 NKJV)

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37 NIV)

Once we know God’s truth, there will be no reason for us to believe the enemy’s lies. We can stand firm on the His promises and allow His light to dispel the darkest of any negative thoughts or beliefs. This is how we fight our battles, and with God, we win!

Let’s Pray: Dear God, Thank you for Your truth that reminds us who we are in You. We are grateful that You have given us the victory over the enemy. May we be transformed by the renewing of our minds so that we can hear Your voice and obey Your Word. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Thankful Thursdays: God is close

It’s Thursday and I’m thankful God is always closer than I realize.

Last night (April 5), I was discouraged because for months now, I have asked God to show me how to get closer to Him. The crazier our world becomes, the more important it is to have a close relationship with God and follow Jesus Christ’s lead. But to me, my prayers to God were met by radio silence from Him. And in the process, it felt like I was drifting farther away from Him. 

The silence and distance felt devastating. I asked God over and over again how to be closer to Him. I asked Him to help me feel His presence and experience His peace but still it felt like He wasn't answering me nor drawing near to me.

I am also a perfectionist and an overachiever. I know that God speaks to His people through His Word. So I bought a new study Bible in hopes that reading through it from Genesis to Revelation, would help me become closer to God. Yet despite my best efforts to draw closer to Him, God still felt distant to me and I was becoming more and more discouraged by this situation. 

However, in the midst of my discouragement and feeling far away from God last night, He put a song on my heart that I hadn’t heard nor thought of in almost two decades. The song is called “You Were Much Closer” by Fred Hammond and the lyrics remind the listener that God is always present in your life. The lyrics also encourage the listener by saying God is much closer than you realize! 

The Holy Bible says God will NEVER leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). Jesus Christ promises to be with us until the END of the world (Matthew 28:20) and He means that in the most literal sense!

God often speaks to my heart through songs. When I look up the lyrics and listen to the song on YouTube, it’s always exactly what I need in that moment.

Last night was no different. God met me in my situation through this song. And I am so grateful. I think He also was letting me know that I don’t need to perform my way into a closer relationship with Him. God just wants us to trust Him and let Him lead. I am determined now to remember that God is not far away and out of my reach. He’s right here with me, in fact, He is closer than I realize!

Devotionals for the Heart: Why we need to rely on God's Holy Spirit

Relying on Flesh Instead of the Spirit

“I say, then, walk by the Spirit and you will certainly not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit desires what is against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you don't do what you want.” –Galatians 5:16-17 (CSB)

This was the second time she told me. It took two mentions before I listened and moved on the word God told her to say to me. My close friend told me months prior that God wanted me to attend her church. I had visited her church several times over the years and never felt a pull to join. Therefore, hearing this didn't excite me. I didn't “feel” led.

After the second time, I sought God for myself. I said, “Lord, if you truly want me to attend this church, please tell me for yourself.” Hours later I found myself on the church's YouTube channel watching a sermon series. I don't remember what led me to it. However, I would receive my confirmation here.

The series was called "Time to Make a Change". It’s about transforming into who God wants you to be. Before watching these sermons, God told me I was in a training season to prepare me for what He wants me to do for His Kingdom. I had no idea joining this church was a part of that call from God.

The Holy Spirit fire hit me while I watched part two of the series. Something the pastor said shot through me like lightning. I started speaking in my heavenly language and heard God say, "This is where you will continue your training."

The tears and the tongues would not stop flowing. God has spoken. What else could I do but obey? So, I started attending my friend’s church.

When I started my walk with Jesus Christ years ago, the Lord told me He wanted me to disciple new believers. Back then, I didn't even know what the word “disciple” meant. It would be years before that work would begin.

After a few months of attending the new church, I started to waver. Lord, where is my training? I didn't see it nor “feel” it. I stood in the middle of service one day, questioning the Holy Spirit-filled confirmation I had months prior.

The following week, I received the answers I was seeking. The church announced they needed volunteers to join the prayer team to disciple newly saved believers. I almost fell off my chair. I thought about the question God asked me years prior, “Will you disciple new believers?” I thought about my Holy Spirit-filled confirmation, “You will continue your training here.”

It all started coming together. Everything fuzzy and out of focus was beginning to come into focus. This is where I would train to disciple those who had just given their life to Christ. To think I almost missed it because I didn't “feel” it.

I was looking for things to feel right to affirm what my friend said. I was looking for my flesh to confirm what the Spirit was doing. We often look for a feeling to verify whether or not we've made the right decision or are heading in the right direction. However, when situations are spirit-led and filled, we cannot look to our flesh to confirm anything.

When the Holy Spirit guides you into something new, it may not feel right or make sense to you. For example, I was looking for a new church home, and because I had visited this church several times and it never “felt” right, it didn't make sense to me that it would be a place for me to join. I didn’t realize at the time that’s where God was calling me to be.

I allowed a feeling to lead me to disobedience. It took my friend two times to get me to heed God's instructions. Delayed obedience is still disobedience.

Coming to this church didn't feel right. It didn't make sense. I had tried it out before, so what would be different this time? Well, this time, I am in a different life season. I am in a season where it is “time to make a change”.

The scripture above describes the tension between the flesh and the spirit perfectly. They are both constantly at odds. I encourage you to seek God's confirmation if you feel that your flesh is telling you one thing but the Holy Spirit is telling you another.

We cannot rely on our feelings when God tries to do something new. Believing the feeling can lead you to disobedience. Instead, seek God, repent, then obey.

Let’s Pray: Heavenly Father, forgive us for believing our feelings more than the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Forgive us for seeking confirmation outside of You and Your will. Father God, we desire You and You alone for direction and all of the instructions we need as we journey through this life. You are our only reliable source! We thank You, and we love You, Lord. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Monique M. Anderson is a writer, creator, wife, and bonus mom. She was born and raised in Mount Vernon, NY, where she still resides. She released her always present yet hidden talent of writing to the masses in June 2019.

Monique always felt like God was chasing after her but was never ready to surrender. Finally, she reached a point in her life when things started going left, and she no longer felt in control. In 2021, God revealed her prophetic gift and how He wants her to use it. Monique always felt compelled to pray for others but had no idea God would use her in this way. Through this gift as a prophetic intercessor, she’s not just writing about what God can do but showing what God can do.

Since God has shown her who He created her to be, she now feels it is her life’s work to help those taking their first steps in their walk with Christ. She is doing so through her blog, prayer, and soon-to-be-published works. She is excited to extend her reach to YouTube, podcasts, and speaking engagements soon.

Her blog is the stepping stone to fulfilling the vision God gave to her – “Sharing God’s revelations so we can all better reflect his image and fulfill His purpose.”

Devotionals for the Heart: A life lesson learned from opening a shutter

“Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.”

Modern technology baffles me at times.

Prior to the pandemic shutdown of 2020, I had never used a laptop computer; but when my employer requested that we work from home, I was given one to use to stay connected to my co-workers. I learned the basics—just enough to get by. I ended up purchasing one of my own when my employment tenure ended and learning the nuances of a laptop vs. a desktop computer has been interesting to say the least.

I recently had an experience with my laptop that was embarrassing but enlightening at the same time. Our family has a weekly Zoom call on Sunday afternoons, and when I logged on per usual, my camera was blacked out. So, I logged off and tried again—with the same result. As we are all told to “reboot” when all else fails, that is what I did. No change. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the camera app with no success.

Fortunately, my laptop was still under warranty so at this point, I contacted the Geek Squad via on-line chat. After the pleasantries of “hello” and “what is issue?” the technician asked me if my laptop had a slide bar at the top where the camera lens is. I had never noticed that bar before, but I discovered it had somehow been moved and was covering the lens. Problem solved! How embarrassing that something so simple had caused such anguish!

As I said, this was also an enlightening experience. Now I know how to solve this issue should it arise again, but I also learned a greater lesson through this. If I had taken the time to check out the features of my laptop, I would have known that slide bar was there and that it could shut off access to the camera if I desired. Investing the time to discover that feature would have saved the frustration I felt that Sunday afternoon.

I thought about how often I have tried to resolve problems using my own tactics only to find no resolution. It all seems futile and dark—much like that closed shutter of my camera. In my own efforts to figure things out, I often miss the answers that only He can provide. Much like investing that time to learn about my laptop, spending time in reading God’s word, in fellowship with other believers, and in connecting with Him in prayer will help discern His direction.

Reading the manual beforehand would have helped me to quickly troubleshoot the problem with my laptop; just as knowing God and reading His Manual (The Holy Bible) before problems arise can help us find the answers we need.

Opening the closed shutter of my mind and heart allows His light and love to shine in. My cloudy vision is made clearer. I am reminded of John 8:12 (NIV), where Jesus Christ says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

All it takes is opening the shutter.

Let’s Pray: Forgive us, God, when we think we know how best to solve our problems. You and only you have the answers. Keep our minds and our hearts open to your guidance. When all seems dark and we can’t find our way, help us focus on your light and your love. You are the light of the world. In Jesus’s Name we pray. Amen.

Dear Reader Friends,

Tomorrow (Jan. 1, 2021) marks the start of a New Year!

And it also begins another part of our devotional journey!

I am excited to announce that this year, we have nine NEW regularly scheduled writers, six original writers from 2020 who are continuing to write devotionals this new year, and six backup writers contributing to my blog's tri-weekly series, “Devotionals for the Heart!”

Angela Anderson was born in Brooklyn, New York. She was raised in a Christian home in New Jersey. Angela dedicated her life to Christ and was baptized at the age of 12.

As a child in elementary school, she developed a penchant for writing book reports and entering writing contests. By high school, she was taking advanced placement courses in English and Speech & Creative Writing. Angela’s love for journaling also had its beginnings in high school and it evolved into prayers journals and detailed notes for prospective book ideas. As a result, Angela is the author of a published 40-day devotional book titled Just When I Thought I Knew God. She also wrote a children’s book that is not yet published.

Although Angela wanted to somehow incorporate writing in her life, she is currently a Certified Human Resources Professional. Angela graduated from Rutgers University in NJ with a double bachelor’s degree in Labor/Employment Relations & Sociology. She also has an MBA from Strayer University.

Angela founded a non-profit 501(C)(3) organization called Head to the Sky, Inc. It was formed in order to assist those in prison with their transition into society and to reduce the rate of recidivism in the community. During this venture, Angela received a certification in grant writing from The Edyth Bush Institute for Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership at Rollins College. Angela was very passionate about teaching, training, and sharing the love of Christ in this ministry; but she had to refocus her passion when she and her husband decided to start their family.

Angela has been married to the love of her life, Duane Anderson for 16 years. Together they have two sons: Thomas (age 8) and Ryan (age 3). Angela’s favorite pastime is journaling and she also enjoys spending quality time with her family. Her personal mission is to empower others to achieve their goals and dreams.

Chaplain Anderson served for 20 years as a U.S. Navy chaplain. Over 26 years of active duty, he was promoted through the ranks from Seaman Apprentice (E2) to his final rank as Commander (O5) in the Chaplain’s Corps. 

Prior to his Naval career, Chaplain Anderson pastored in the Allegheny East and Potomac Conferences of Seventh-day Adventists. His undergraduate preparation for ministry was completed at Columbia Union College (WAU) in Takoma Park, Maryland.

He has subsequently earned four graduate degrees–a Master of Divinity from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, a Master of Education in Counseling and Personnel Services from the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland and a Masters of Sacred Theology in Religion and Culture from Boston University. His Doctor of Ministry degree was conferred by Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.

Chaplain Anderson also completed four units of Clinical Pastoral Education at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He also holds certifications in Suicide Awareness and Prevention, Civil Mediation, Alternative Workplace Dispute Resolution, Temperament Analysis, Marriage Enrichment, Workforce Diversity, and is a certified Life Coach.

Christa MacDonald is a 2017 Carol Award finalist for contemporary Christian fiction. She began her writing career at the age of eleven, filling a sketchbook with poems and short stories. 

After publishing a few short pieces in her college's literary magazine she took a long hiatus during which she embarked on a few different careers, got married, had three kids, and renovated an old barn masquerading as a house.

She earned her Master of Fine Arts in Script & Screenwriting from Regent University and is an alumnus of Act One: Hollywood Film & Television Writing Program.

Monique M. Anderson is a writer, wife, and bonus mom to a 14 year old. 

She just recently unleashed her always present yet hidden talent of writing to the masses. 

She was born and raised in Mount Vernon, NY where she still resides, and serves on the prayer team of her church The Gathering Harlem.

Monique always felt like God was chasing after her, but never felt the need to surrender. Until that is when life started veering left, and she no longer wanted to steer so she finally gave Jesus the wheel. After forming her relationship with God she always felt compelled to share the revelations that the Word gave to her. She always felt the Holy Spirit prompting her to write, but was afraid of what people might think. So her writing started in her journal. The journal turned into a book, and the book into a blog.

Slowly but surely God’s love started to cast out all fear. She started to consistently update her bi- weekly blog called “Yours Truly, Moe.” Her obedience led to further revelation. God revealed to her that He would use her to help others along their walk the same way God helped her along hers. Since Monique did not grow up in church she always felt intimidated by the Christian life. She thought that she would be losing so much of herself, not realizing that she would actually find her TRUE self.

Since God has shown her who He really created her to be, she now feels it is her life’s work to help those that are taking their first baby steps in this walk with Christ. She is doing so through her blog, and soon to be published book. Monique is excited to extend her reach to podcasts and speaking engagements in the near future.

Patricia Russell is a speaker, worship leader, author, certified life coach and songwriter.
