Devotionals for the Heart: How resting in God's creations calmed my soul

Resting in God’s Creations

A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty—and I will meditate on your wonderful works.”—Psalm 145:5 (NIV)

The morning began with the usual activities: Praying and sharing time with God, having a delicious breakfast of toast and chocolate milk, taking daily medicine, enjoying a refreshing shower, choosing an outfit for the day, and checking the calendar for any appointments. As I walked from room to room in the house, I looked out of the windows and watched the birds. Although there were many tasks for the day, I knew peace would come by resting in God’s creations.

The calendar was filled with medical appointments for my husband and for me. When I look at our daily schedule, I’m shocked if there aren’t any doctor visits listed. Shocked and thankful. This morning, the calendar showed medical procedures and follow-up appointments for Alan and me. Dread filled my body and my thoughts. “Why, Lord? Why aren’t our bodies healed? Why?” The questions kept coming as I spoke out loud to God.

Once again, God led me to look outside at His creations. The sunlight cast a beautiful reflection through the window. As the light touched the carpet, I walked from the window to the front door. Shadows covered areas of the hallway where the sun hadn’t reached. I smiled and reached for the door handle. As I stepped outside, the worries of medical appointments and achy bodies left my mind. I paused, took a deep breath in, then released it. My shoulders relaxed. My breathing slowed. The sun touched my face, and the warmth of God’s rest covered me.

I prayed and thanked God for the ability to rest in His creations. A ruby-throated hummingbird visited the feeder. A monarch butterfly danced around the petunias. A family of chickadees called out to each other from different trees. Red cardinals sat on the tray feeder eating breakfast.

These glorious creations were busy with their morning routines. Even the hummingbirds took time to sit on the feeder and drink the nectar. I noticed how none of these animals were in a hurry or looking rushed. Sitting on a porch chair, I listened to the sounds of God’s creations. I heard various bird calls, families taking morning walks together and sharing conversations, neighbors saying hello as they passed by our home and I felt the quiet of the morning. As I prayed, I listened for God’s guidance for the day. He answered. God showed me that although I have worries and trials, I’m never alone. I can find rest in His creations. God created these beautiful sights and sounds that brought me peace that morning.

My parents liked to sit on the porch and watch the happenings in their neighborhood. As a young girl, I wondered why they always enjoyed being outside. Now, I know. My Mama and Daddy were resting in God’s creations.

Today and every day, peace and comfort can be found with God. Praying, giving thanksgiving for His many blessings, and asking for His rest to cover us can bring calm and joy. Have you rested with God today?

Let’s Pray:

Dear God,

Thank You for Your creations. May we always make time to enjoy the many blessings You provide. Teach us to rest in your creation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Jesus Christ seeks the lost to bring them home

Finding the Lost
A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn't he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?”
—Luke 15:4 (NIV)

I leaned against the fence and watched children enjoying the bounce house.

Our grandchildren had been invited to a young friend’s birthday party. My husband and I were also invited. As I stood and soaked in the sunshine, a small tug at the hem of my shirt made me look down. A blue-eyed, blonde-haired girl about six years old, motioned for me to look. “The balloon is lost. It’s going to the park. We need to go get it.” Her expression and voice showed her concern for finding the lost, even if it was a balloon.

“That’s okay. There are plenty of other balloons. We can’t get that one. It’s already high in the sky.” I responded. The girl looked up to the sky and then back at me. She asked if I was sure we couldn’t go get the lost balloon.

I pointed to the numerous pink, purple, blue, and yellow balloons attached to the fence, tables, and other areas. I hoped to show her that the lost balloon was not the only one available to enjoy. With a frown, this sweet young girl turned and left my side. I watched as she went to the bounce house, removed her shoes, and entered. Her smile and laughter returned when she began bouncing with the other children.

This short encounter with a young child reminded me of the parable of the lost sheep. Every sheep and every person is important to God. There are times when we may become lost and can’t find our way to God. Personal struggles, financial problems, relationship issues, employment trials, and many other situations may cause us to stray, doubt, or lose faith.

Yet, God never leaves. God knows that emotions can take charge of our thinking at times. God knows that we will fail at times. Our hope and peace are found in knowing God and His love for us. When we are lost or feel uncertain in everyday life situations, that is not the end. The Father will search for us if we stray. He will leave the 99 and seek the lost. God will find the lost in whatever situation occurs.

Do you know someone who feels lost in their faith? Perhaps you are the one searching for answers. Prayer is key to having a personal relationship with God. Acknowledging God is the way, asking for forgiveness, and praying for wisdom, discernment, and revelation can help lead the lost. There may be times of uncertainty. God has told us that there will be trouble while we are on this earth. Peace comes from knowing this earth is not our forever home.

God will cover us with peace and comfort when we go to Him and pray. Prayers will be answered according to His timing and in His way.

Yes, the balloon from the birthday party was lost in the sky. It probably popped when hitting a tree branch. But there were other balloons for the children to enjoy. Although I didn’t leave and search for the lost balloon, I’m confident that when I stray, God searches for me and brings me back to Him.

Have you lost something and asked God for help?

Let’s Pray:
Dear God, thank You for the love, comfort, and peace that covers Your children. May we always remember to rest in Your promises. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: How giving and receiving blessings creates joy

The Joy of Accepting Blessings

A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”—James 1:17 (NIV)

I looked forward to attending a writer’s retreat where I would share writing ideas, fellowship with other writers, learn how to improve my writing craft as I sat in workshops, collaborate on devotions, meet with literary agents, and have other rich experiences. Every retreat I attended in the past was filled with laughter and a few tears. The relationships between these writers were strengthened by God.

However, my plans to attend the writer’s retreat changed when arthritic pain in my neck and back intensified. My heart ached when I decided not to attend. Through my decision to stay home, I soon learned the joy of accepting blessings. I sent emails and texts alerting my group of friends that I would not be attending our retreat. Immediately, the responses flooded my inbox: “Oh, Melissa, we’ll miss you. Are you sure you can’t attend?” “What can we do to help?” The compassion and love from the group warmed my heart. Each person covered me with precious prayers and blessings.

After that outpouring of love, I began to feel awkward about letting the group down. The plan was for a dear friend and me to share a room at the rental house. That would help with cost. Most of all, we love sharing time together. This special friend sent a message that she would refund the payment for my part of the room. I explained that she didn’t need to give any money back to me. My anxiety began to surface. I worried about accepting that check from my friend. I thought: “What if she needed that money?” “How could I accept her offer?”

But then, God began to speak to me in wonderful ways. He reminded me that sometimes we need to accept blessings from others. There is no need to feel awkward or embarrassed when someone offers to help. Yet, I am encouraged and inspired when I’m the person who is offering a blessing by helping someone in need. God reminded me through Scripture that every good and perfect gift is from Him. There are times when we can bless others with our words and actions. There are other times when we need to be blessed.

I accepted the check from my friend. That money was needed for an unexpected expense. God knew what was needed. My friend listened to God and blessed my husband and me. Accepting a blessing can bless the giver and the receiver. What a beautiful way to share God’s love and glory!

Today, I paused to think about different types of blessings. We bless people when we acknowledge them, look them in the eyes, and say hello. Listening and hearing what is being said can show God’s love to someone who needs to share about something happening in their life.

I also considered the Blessing Box that my husband and I fill at different times during the month. A team of volunteers from our church are assigned a week to fill the box with food and personal hygiene items. One of our team members recently shared that a man approached him while he was placing items into the box. The stranger thanked him for the food and toiletries.

I also remembered a time when my neighbor was exiting her vehicle this morning and sneezed loud enough to make us laugh. I said, “God bless you.” She responded with a smile and a “thank you”. She said that sneezing made her jump. A simple blessing over a sneeze allowed two neighbors to share a conversation.

I have learned the joy of accepting blessings, and it has encouraged my heart. Have you been blessed in a special way?

Let’s Pray:
Dear God, thank You for big and small blessings. Each one is provided by You. May we look for ways to bless others every day. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: God is always present with all His creation

Waiting for the Hummingbirds
A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”
—Matthew 6:26 (NIV)

Spring is here in the Lowcountry. Warm days and cool nights are forecasted.

I’m smiling as I write this devotional because the sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the temperatures are rising. Early this morning, there was frost on the roofs. The sound of the heater turning on echoes throughout the house.

As I gaze out of my office window, I need patience as I’m waiting for the hummingbirds. My husband and I are usually the first people to hang hummingbird feeders in our neighborhood. Another neighbor hangs her feeder about the same time. We alert each other when we see the beautiful, winged creatures visiting us. Ruby-throated hummingbirds fly close to the windows while checking out their surroundings. Then, they enjoy the sweet nectar from flowers and hanging feeders.

Colorful plants catch the attention of these fascinating birds. Purple and pink petunias, red impatiens, orange and yellow cosmos, and many other varieties of flowers stand ready with nourishment. What a joy to watch God’s creatures!

When I have a stressful day and my body is filled with arthritic pain, I pause and rest, thinking about God’s creations. I pray and ask why the pain won’t stop. There are some days that my body needs to rest. Other days, I can participate in family activities, vendor events to sell my books, and other special occasions.

Reading Scripture reminds me that God is always present. The Bible shares that God cares for the birds of the air and that God cares for all His creations. He is with the birds when they are hurt. He is with the animals, keeping them safe. God loves each of His creations. He is always present.

Why do I worry? I’m human. That is the reason. I pray and give God my worries. Then, sometimes I take those worries back. God understands. Our Heavenly Father shows His love in every moment. He knows there will be times when I question Him. And He knows there will be times when I praise Him.

I wish I could say that worries never enter my thoughts. I admit I fret about certain things. God listens and hears the prayers of His people. When worries invade my mind, I find peace in going to God and seeking His peace and comfort.

Scripture tells us that God cares for the birds of the air, and He cares for us, too. Our Heavenly Father always provides what we need. Those provisions are sometimes given immediately, and other times, we must wait.

Our anchor text today (Matthew 6:26) reminds us that we are more valuable than the birds of the air. God feeds them, and He feeds us. Nourishment is important. For humans, spending time reading the Bible, studying Scripture, and sharing conversation with God in prayer can strengthen our faith.

As I wait for the hummingbirds, I pray and give thanks for the many glorious blessings from God. What parts of creation bring you joy?

Let’s Pray: Heavenly Father, thank You for the beauty of the world. Help us to pause and enjoy your creations. Guide us to share these glorious sights and sounds with others. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: God is always with us so we are never alone

Never Alone
A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”—John 16:33 (NIV)

Every morning, I open the front door of the house and give thanks to God.

Then, I walk to the back door, open it, and give thanks to God again. This simple routine allows me to begin my day with thanksgiving and to remember that I am never alone. Depending on the season and the weather, when I open the doors, I experience something different. As the sun begins to rise, I watch the sky and look for indications of weather changes. God’s glorious creations cover the world and bring me joy. Looking at the sky and remembering the Creator tells me that I am never alone.

Bird watching is one of my favorite hobbies. The end table in my living room has several bird books that offer details about these winged creatures. Colorful photographs, migrating habits, descriptions of male and female traits, and more are found on each page. When I see a bird that I don’t recognize, I refer to the books. I listen for the sounds of chickadees, bluebirds, and woodpeckers as they begin the day by displaying their unique calls. Their songs remind me that I am never alone.

The past year was filled with health issues that changed the way I experienced life. Walking around the block every day became too painful. When I was asked to participate in events, I had to inquire about stairs and nearby parking. Frustration set in, and depression tried to take over my thoughts. My prayers for healing continued throughout the day and night. I changed doctors. New scans and tests were ordered. Although I was disappointed at some of the test results, I knew that God had a plan. I was never alone. God was always with me.

Pain continues to fill my body today, yet I’m not discouraged or heartbroken. Through my pain, I’m able to minister to other folks who are experiencing pain in their bodies. I want those people to know they are not alone. A listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, and prayers can bring hope and peace.

There are various ways in which a person can feel lonely: The death of a loved one, losing a job, being left out of a conversation, not being able to participate in events due to health issues, living alone, or feeling isolated while in a crowd are a few scenarios where someone may feel alone.

When my husband travels for work, and I am the only person home, the house becomes quiet. I listen to the wind move branches, the birds calling their mates, and the children playing outside. Laughter fills the air. I’m not alone.

I’m thankful to go to God whenever I feel lonely. Scripture shares many verses about God being with us in every situation. The Bible says God will never leave us. Deuteronomy 31:8 shares that the Lord will go ahead of us. He will never abandon us.

How can we help others who might be experiencing loneliness? Taking time to pause and look someone in the eye when they speak, offering to visit the shut-ins in our church and neighborhood, sharing conversation and sharing prayers are a few ways to shine the love of Jesus Christ.

Let’s Pray:
Dear God, thank You for covering us with peace and comfort when we are lonely. Help us to remember that You are always with us. In every moment, your presence fills us with love. Thank you, Lord. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: How to trust God's timing in every season

More than Frost on the Roof
A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
—Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV)

As I write this devotional, the weather forecasters are predicting a bad winter storm to cover the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Weather models from across the world show possible patterns that the storm may follow. As I listen to the urgency in the voices of news reporters, I look outside and see frost on the roof.

Growing up in Virginia, my family was familiar with four distinct seasons. When we moved to South Carolina, we learned that there are basically two temperatures for the Lowcountry. Warm and hot. Yes, sometimes there are unusual temperature drops, as well as the occasional snow and ice storm. Those occurrences happen every few years.

One way I gauge the temperature during winter is by checking the roofs of neighborhood homes. Each morning, I look to see if there is frost or ice covering the tops of the houses. I also look at vehicles. If there is frost or ice covering the vehicle, I know that the morning is freezing cold.

Today, the roofs and cars are covered in ice. There is more than a light covering of frost. Checking the weather app on my phone, I see the temperatures are supposed to be in the 60s later today. This morning, the temperature was 27 degrees. There will be a dramatic change as the day progresses. Yet, I should not be surprised at the weather. Scripture shares that there is a time for everything. There is a season for every activity. This morning, people will wear coats, hats, and clothes. This afternoon, we’ll change to short sleeves. The coats will be hung back in the closet.

Sometimes, we question God’s timing. We pray and beg for answers. We cry, lament, and wonder why our prayers are not immediately answered. But our prayers are answered. Those requests are heard by God and answered in His perfect timing. People in church circles say that God may not come when you want Him to but He is never late. He is always on time. During my breast cancer diagnosis and treatment almost 21 years ago, I was comforted by the people God placed in my life to remind me of His presence and love. New friendships were formed with my doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. Those relationships continue years later through conversations, cards, letters, and emails. God provided answers to prayers by sending people who would understand my cancer journey.

As the sun rises in our neighborhood, I see evidence of the air reaching warmer temperatures. Small areas of frost and ice on the roofs and cars begin melting. A fog rolls in, and sunshine peeks through the cloudy sky. Birds are awake and visiting the feeders. Buses are picking up children to transport them to school. Folks are walking their dogs. Neighbors are waving hello to each other. Gloves and scarves are being removed as the temperatures warm.

Yes, there is more than frost on the roof. There is evidence of God’s creations and His glory. I pause and thank God for this warm home and for answered prayers. I thank God for His answers in His timing. Tomorrow may bring another weather change. But I’ll be ready. I’ll start the day by giving thanks to God.

Let’s Pray:

Dear God,

We give thanks for the changes that the seasons bring to the world. Help us to remember that your timing is always perfect and that You have the best plans for our life. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: When it is time to listen to God and pray to Him

Time to Listen

A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.”
—Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)

Throughout the year, my email inbox is filled with ways to cultivate a relationship with God. The ideas include but are not limited to reading the Bible in a year, studying devotions for the weary, notes on ways to find joy in life, educational information about beginning healthy eating programs, and advice on how to “start over” in various parts of daily routines. These all flood my computer.

I appreciate the guidance and wisdom of people, but I’ve made my choice. I’ve decided to be still and make time to listen to God. As a writer, I need to check emails and phone messages several times each day. When I start my day by thanking God for His blessings, I find comfort and peace. When I start my day by reaching for the phone or sitting in front of the computer and scrolling instead of focusing on God, I’ve noticed how my body reacts in different ways.

Sharing time with God first thing every day before I touch technology brings me peace and comfort. Does that mean I won’t have troubles during the day? No. God has told us that we will experience trials and suffering. But we can face those troublesome times knowing that we are not alone. God is always with us.

I have a note taped to my computer that says, “PRAY FIRST”. That note reminds me that in all areas of my life, I should go to God first. There is a different outcome when I try to handle things on my own. However, when I seek God first before trying to figure everything out by myself, I find answers and peace.

Noises of the day can try to overshadow what God intends for my life. I must be intentional in how I share time with God. Those moments with the Lord bring refreshment and renewal. When we read the Bible, we can see that Jesus Christ took time to listen to His Father (God). Often, Jesus would go away from the crowds to pray. Other times, He prayed aloud while people listened. Both examples show that Jesus knew the importance of listening to God. From retreating to a mountainside to be alone with His Father or sharing God’s message to a crowd on a hillside, Jesus listened.

Taking the time to listen to God can deepen our relationship with the Father. As we pause, pray, and listen for His Word, we are showing respect, honor, and love for God. In those quiet moments of listening, we may find answers to prayers. When we commit ourselves to God, we can rest in His promises.

In my daily prayers, I ask God for wisdom, discernment, and revelation. I wait and listen. God may provide answers quickly, or God’s response may come at another time. Either way, as I take time to listen, I rest in knowing I am not alone.

As I write this message, the house is quiet. Pausing, I listen. God speaks through nature. The rain tapping on the roof creates a beautiful melody. The cardinals, chick-a-dees, finches, and downy woodpeckers sing while visiting the bird feeders. A neighbor rides by in their vehicle. The sound of the car engine leaves as quickly as it came. Today is a quiet day in this neighborhood.

After Winter Break, school resumes. People who have day jobs will travel to work in the morning. Life will become busy for many people. I pray that in the midst of busyness and daily activities, may we remember to take time to listen to God. Start the day with prayer. Pray throughout the day. End the day with prayer. Those simple acts can bring us closer to God.

Let’s Pray:
Father God, we give thanks for the opportunity to be still and listen for Your messages. Thank You for the sounds of nature and the beauty of creation. Please help us to remember to listen and rest in Your promises. We ask for wisdom, discernment, and revelation in every situation. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Comfort

The Comfort of Jesus
A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“Jesus is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
~Hebrews 13:8 (NIV)

Have you ever paused to consider the Scripture listed above? Have you ever thought about the blessing of Jesus staying the same yesterday and today and forever? What a wonderful comfort to know Jesus is always with us. He never leaves us. He loves us forever. In a world full of changes, the love of Jesus brings blessings to all.

Our days may be full of activities, rushing here and there, trying to complete everything on the “to do” list. Or our days may be lonely and filled with uncertainty. Each of us has a unique path in life and special gifts given to us by God. Knowing He is with us brings comfort and peace.

As we experience daily schedules, sometimes things are the same and sometimes different. The schedule may include a different time or place. A new appointment, lunch date, play date, or our work hours may change. Births, deaths, illness and more. How we adapt to those changes shows others how we rely on God.

Even if our lives are filled with happiness or sadness, calm or stress, rest or rush, there is one constant in our lives. Jesus. Forever. Even if we become weary and lose hope, He never leaves us. We can always return to Him.

Friendships may come and go. New friendships may be formed. The hours change, the days change, lives change daily. Change is evident everywhere, from the ocean tide to the rising and setting sun. Changes come in the seasons and the weather. Warm temperatures to cold winds, God’s creations are full of changes.

When we feel overwhelmed, Jesus is there, waiting for us to go to Him. When we are filled with joy and happiness, Jesus is there, waiting for us to go to Him. From prayers of anguish to prayers of thanksgiving, His attention to us never wavers. He never turns His back on us.

His arms are always open, waiting for us. His love is always evident. We are forever His.

Jesus is always the same. We never have to worry about losing His love or Him not caring for us.

Jesus loved us yesterday, Jesus loves us today. Jesus loves us forever.

Can you share the good news with others? Have you showed His love to others today? Find someone and remind them of Hebrews 13:8. Have a conversation about the peace Jesus provides.

There may be someone waiting to hear about the love of Jesus. Don’t assume everyone knows the comfort of Jesus. Share His love through your words and actions.

What a glorious day to show people that “Jesus is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

Blessings,

Melissa Henderson

Devotionals for the Heart: A reminder that YOU are NOT Alone

Note to self: You are not alone
A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“Look to the Lord and His strength: seek His face always.”
 ~1 Chronicles 16:11 (NIV)

Sunny days bring sounds of laughter and play outside. Rainy days bring peaceful sounds of raindrops tapping on the roof. Cloudy days often bring sounds of gentle breezes blowing through the trees beckoning times of rest. On any of these days, someone may feel alone. A person can feel alone even while surrounded by a crowd of family or friends or strangers.

As we experience the moments of our lives, we often get caught up in day-to-day activities. Work, house cleaning, laundry to wash, meals to prepare, bills to pay, errands to run and so much more: Meetings, church events, afterschool activities, letters and/or emails to read and a seemingly unending list of “to do’s”.

Being busy does not make us fulfilled. There may be a person you know who shows a big smile and a sweet attitude. They appear to have life in order and all seems to be wonderful. But, do we pause and truly visit with that person? Do we pause and share a smile with a stranger?

Do we assume everyone is “okay” because they don’t share their sadness with others? If everything looks fine on the outside, do we just move on with our lives? Are our days filled with rushing here and there, to fulfill the daily task list?

With many questions to ponder, there are many ways to seek the Lord and His strength. Seek Him always. In the rush of life, seek Him. In the quiet of life, seek Him. When you see a friend or a stranger, offer a smile. Look the person in the eyes and smile. Say hello.

Each one of us has felt alone at times. We are blessed to know we are never truly alone. God is always with us.

During my times of loneliness, depression and anxiety have tried to creep in my thoughts. I am thankful God has given me doctors to help. I am thankful for family, friends and even strangers who share a smile and a “Hello.”

Reading God’s Word (The Holy Bible), sharing time with God and sharing thoughts with others are reminders I am not alone.

Peace and comfort come over me whenever I seek the Lord. The peace and comfort only He can provide. Trying to solve loneliness or sadness on my own doesn’t work for me. Only when I seek Him, the powerful reminder of 1 Chronicles 16:11 shows me that I am never alone.

So even on those days when life is full of activities and time flies by, I will remind myself of His love and comfort. As the title of my devotional today says, “Note to self: You are not alone.”

Amen.

Blessings,

Melissa Henderson

Devotionals for the Heart: Friends who help and a God who saves

A friend comes to help…
A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you. – Isaiah 54:10 (NIV)

Living near ponds and rivers means there will be new and different creatures to learn about. From alligators to lizards to snakes, I am learning more than I ever wanted to know about these creatures.

Recently, I looked out of my side window and noticed a snake sunning itself on my neighbor’s front doormat. Since I am afraid of snakes, and my husband was at work, I called my next door neighbor on the other side of the house. This man enjoys all kinds of wildlife and whenever I see something that scares me or causes me concern, this nice neighbor comes to the rescue.

The neighbor, his wife and one of their grandchildren came right over to calm me. The nice lady in the house where the snake was sunning, came to the front window and looked at us standing in the yard. We motioned to her that we were watching something.

Going through her back door, this neighbor gathered with us. I was afraid. I prayed for the snake to go away. It did. Traveling into the siding of the house next door was not where we had intended that thing to end up.

My neighbors, who are interested in nature truly comforted me. The nice man and his granddaughter taught me some things about nature.

After several attempts to find the creature, everyone went home. Each time the friends returned home, the snake returned outside to sun. Each time I saw it, I called the neighbor again.

These neighbors were patient and kind. They never complained about me calling them because I was scared. Each time, they came to my yard and chatted with me.

After numerous calls to the neighbors, I finally spotted the snake slithering back to the creek behind the neighborhood. I hope it doesn’t come back any time soon.

Through all this stressful time, I thanked God for neighbors who comfort and come whenever I call. They are busy with their own activities. They could have just told me not to worry and went on about their daily routines.

Yet, each time, the neighbors came to my house, comforted me and made me feel safe.

Through the whole situation, I was comforted by friends and most of all by God, who comforts with His unfailing love and compassion. His peace will not be removed.

Thank you, Lord, for friends who comfort and care.

Have a blessed day,

Melissa Henderson

Devotionals for the Heart: When your heart is heavy and you cannot pray

Sighs, groans, and prayers
A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness: for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.” – Romans 8:26 (NRSV)

The words wouldn’t come. My heart was heavy. My body was exhausted from worry for a family member who had been making terrible life decisions. I had taken matters into my own hands thinking I could “fix” everything. I had not prayed to ask for help. Why did I not go to God first?

Praying doesn’t mean everything will turn out the way I want things to be. Praying gives me a relationship with God. He knows my thoughts before I think or speak.

Yet, years ago, I held on to my thinking of how life would be different for my family member if only I could help. Offering to go along on doctor visits, to cook special meals, to take the person on outings every week and much more.

If only these offers would make the person happy and find a way out of the dangerous decisions they were making. If only… I could fix this problem and make them feel better. I truly wanted to help.

Worry and anxiety consumed my days and nights. Just thinking about the wrong decisions the person was making made me physically ill. Knowing the potential of this wonderful family member brought tears more than once or twice. Watching them take a downward spiral broke my heart.

Why won’t they listen? Why do they repeat bad behavior over and over, not only hurting themselves but hurting the people around them? Why? Questions came over and over. Yet, I had not gone to God during those moments.

Oh, I may have complained and shown a less than friendly attitude when talking with God about the situation. I’ll admit that. My questions continued to be “Why is this happening? Why are You letting this happen?” Why? Why? Why?

Instead of surrendering to Him and placing the burden at His feet, I tried to carry the burden alone.

After a period of time passed, with my body weak from stress, worry, and sadness, I finally surrendered the situation to the Father.

On my knees, I asked for His forgiveness for not coming to Him sooner. I thanked Him for the love He provides freely each and every moment. I didn’t have special words. I spoke from my heart. I did not have a beautiful, thought out prayer. My prayer began with groans and sighs “too deep for words”.

And He found me, in my despair. He lifted me up. As I gave the situation to Him, my burden lightened and peace was found.

Shortly after that surrender, life began to change in a wonderful way for my family member. I know God was listening and He answered prayers in His way and in His time. God reminded me to take burdens to Him. He will handle the outcome.

Blessings,
Melissa Henderson

Devotionals for the Heart: Following

“Who are you following?”
A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
- Matthew 4:19 (NIV)

Every time I read Scripture, I learn something new. In every life circumstance, each verse reveals something amazing and enlightening. A feeling of peace comes over me when I pick up my Bible and open the pages.

There are times when I am not searching for a particular passage. Those times, I simply open the Bible and see where the pages land. Today, the Bible opened on this Scripture in Matthew.

Matthew 4:19 gives me a reminder to look at my life and see who I am following in every moment. In this Scripture, we are told how Jesus had just begun His preaching in Galilee. He met fishermen Simon Peter and Andrew and invites them to join Him. Jesus tells them He will make them “fishers for people”.

Can you imagine the setting? Close your eyes and picture the water lapping against the side of the boat, fishermen standing while throwing their nets in and out of the water, a daily routine.

Here is Jesus. Encouraging them the join Him. Did they understand his meaning of making them “fishers for men”? Discussion could have gone on for a while. Debates about whether they should go with Jesus or not could have occurred. Did they discuss for a long time or did they answer quickly? Continuing to read the book of Matthew, we can learn more.

If they truly became “fishers of men”, would they be able to bring others to Jesus? So many questions. Those fishermen had to make a decision.

Every day, we have to make a decision in our own lives. Are we going to follow Jesus and show His love to others? Or are we going to make a decision to follow someone or something else? Temptation is all around.

Making the true decision to follow Jesus allows us to show others His love, through our words and our actions. We never know when someone is affected by something we speak or some action we take.

Perhaps while standing in the grocery line, we notice a person behind us with only one item to purchase while we have a cart full. We let that person go ahead of us. That’s showing God’s love.

Maybe we are taking a walk in the neighborhood and see other neighbors. We pause to say hello and have a chat. Listening and hearing to what the person shares is another way of showing God’s love.

Or even in our own families, do we truly forgive and forget a wrong done to us? I have heard people say forgiving family is harder than forgiving friends. Who are we following if we don’t have forgiveness in our hearts?

If we rush by opportunities to show God’s love, who are we following? Are we following material things or thinking only of ourselves? Life can be very busy, with activities, daily routines, and definitely unexpected events. Do we pause, reflect and remember to follow the examples Jesus provided? Love, care, compassion. Or are we so concerned about the next minute that we move ahead without showing His love?

I pray that we will all follow Jesus each day. What a difference we could make if we became “fishers for people”.

Look around and see how you can show God’s love to others.

Have a blessed day,

Melissa Henderson

Devotionals for the Heart: "What If?"

Removing the “What If?”
A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”~ Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)

By the time this blog is posted, I will have faced a yearly fear and the outcome will be known.

Each year, at the scheduled time for my mammogram, I become nervous. The reason for my nervousness and fear is because 13 years ago, I went to the doctor for a routine mammogram and the diagnosis was not what I expected. I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

I am very good about getting my regular checkups and mammograms. No changes had been noticed in my body and I was sure the same report would be given that year. All would be fine and an appointment for the next year would be scheduled. No problem.

Yet, that particular visit was followed by a “call back”. The nurse on the phone told me there might be something wrong with the film so I needed to have pictures taken again. No problem.

My husband drove me to the place to have the additional pictures done. We were so confident all was well and he even sat in the car in the parking lot and waited for me.

After the second set of pictures were taken, I was asked to sit in a room and wait for the doctor. Another technician came in the room and told me she would view the results right there while I waited. We chatted and all was well until her voice quieted and she said, “Mrs. Henderson, I will be right back. I need to get the doctor.” No problem, or so I thought.

As the doctor entered the room, the atmosphere changed instantly. Fears of “What if?” ran through my mind. “What if there is a problem? What if I have cancer? What if I need surgery? Should someone go get my husband? My Mother had breast cancer.” These questions and more had my heart racing.

My first instinct was fear when my first action should have been prayer. Yes, prayer came but only after fear appeared first. Why didn’t I remember to pray first? Praying always gives me comfort and peace. Yet, that time, the “What if’s?” got to me first.

The diagnosis of breast cancer, the surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and medications I still have to take provided many lessons over these past 13 years. First, remember to pray. Read God’s Word and soak in His message. Isaiah 41:10 tells us to not fear because He is our God. He will strengthen us and help us.

Yes, God strengthened me and my family. God helped us. God reminded us time and time again that He is always with us. We are blessed by His love.

I am praying this yearly mammogram will have a good report. No matter the outcome, I will lean on Him and know He is with me always.

Blessings,

Melissa Henderson

Devotionals for the Heart: Water

Sharing cool water and more…
A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“What should we do then?” the crowd asked. John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”
—Luke 3:10-11 (NIV)

Today was a typical warm, humid and breezy day in coastal South Carolina. The bright rays of sunshine burst forth from the puffy clouds in between rain sprinkles. At one moment, the sky looked as if rain would moisten the ground all day. The next moment, sunshine seemed to be positioned in the sky and not ready to leave.

A black pickup truck filled with construction supplies arrived and parked in front of our neighbor’s house. The same pickup truck had been coming and going all week. Several men would step out of the vehicle each morning and begin carrying tools and supplies to the back yard. Our neighbor was having a patio poured at the back of her house. The same gentlemen showed up each day and began the task at hand.

Today, that project was completed and a new project began. Those hard workers not only poured patios, they could also powerwash homes and driveways, too. My husband and I watched from the inside of our air-conditioned home, fascinated by their work and dedication to the tasks. These guys worked hard. We didn’t know their names, but we watched to make sure they were okay in the heat. One man was older and there were several younger men.

This afternoon, I noticed the black truck was gone and two men were sitting on a ladder. They seemed to be waiting for a ride. Their work was finished for the day and their bodies looked exhausted. Sweaty shirts, sweat on their brows and slow movements showed how the work had tired them.

A thought crossed my mind, “Wonder if they are thirsty? Wonder if we should take them some water?” As quickly as the thoughts entered my mind, I became distracted by something else. I had seen an opportunity to show God’s love and I had let it slip away, distracted by a meaningless thought about something else.

Shortly afterward, I heard voices outside. Still, I waited and completed what I was doing instead of checking on the gentlemen.

As I walked downstairs, my husband was coming in the front door. “I took some water to the guys out front. They are waiting for their ride. I asked them if they would like some water and they said, “Yes” and “Thank you.”

I am very proud of my husband. He saw a possible need and he acted on his nudge from God. I did not act, thinking I would do something later. I am very upset with myself. I am thankful my husband opened his heart and offered kindness to strangers.

Too often, we postpone acts of kindness, thinking we will do something later. But, now is the time to show God’s love. Don’t put off a nudge from God. Someone might have a need that you can help with and you are given that opportunity to show compassion and kindness.

Can you think of times when you wanted to show kindness and put off the chance, thinking you could do something later? In expressing His love through giving a bottle of water to some strangers, they have been shown the love of God.

We may never see these gentlemen again. I will remember them even though I never learned their names or anything about them. They gave me a lesson today and I will remember that lesson.

God’s love can be shown in many ways. How are you showing His love to others?

Blessings,

Melissa Henderson

Devotionals for the Heart: Gracious Words, Health, Honey and Healing

Gracious Words
A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.”
~Proverbs 16:24 (NIV)

Have you considered your words lately? What about your thoughts? Who did you have conversations with today? Reflecting back on this day and recent times, have you shown the glory of God in your words and actions?

Each day, we are given opportunities to shine His love to others. When things are going great and life is lovely, we are happy to share good news and be joyful in discussions with others.

What about those times when life is tough and we feel like venting?

Those times when someone cuts in front of us in the traffic line, or someone gives a not so nice opinion, or something happens at your job and you just feel like you could scream. How do you handle those times? Are your words soothing and calming, gracious and sweet to the soul?

Or are your words angry and defensive, bitter to you and to others?

These are times when we definitely need to pause and ask God for help. Ask Him for peace of mind and heart. Ask Him for the words He would like you to share with others.

Ask… Ask…

He knows our hearts. He knows exactly what we need.

Imagine having a conversation with someone and the words from the other person are hurtful and angry. Maybe tears flow as the first reaction was unbelief at what was being said. The next reaction might be to defend yourself with hurtful words. How would that help the situation?

Instead, what if you walked away from the conversation? What about pausing to pray and asking God for the words He wants you to share? Or maybe God wants you to stay quiet in this particular instance. Ask Him for guidance.

How do you feel when someone gives you a compliment? When words spoken to you are gracious and sweet to the soul. Does that kindness cause you to want to respond in kindness?

Do you easily lift up others with gracious words and friendliness? We may never know what someone is experiencing in their life. Gracious words can change the perspective of a person who needs love and kindness.

Say hello to the cashier at the store, to the letter carrier, to a neighbor. Ask “How are you?” and truly pause to listen to the answer. Visit a nursing home and listen to the stories of the people there. Their lives are full of magnificent journeys. Taking a walk in the neighborhood on the weekend often brings a chance to speak with people we may not see during the week.

Listen to how you speak to others, in person and on the phone. Are you shining God’s love in your words and your actions? A smile and friendly words can soothe and heal the heart.

Listen to the way people speak to you. Is there something bothering them and they need comfort by your words?

Many questions and many things to consider. Words are a very special way to show others His love and grace. I pray today will be a day full of gracious words.

Blessings,

Melissa Henderson

Devotionals for the Heart: Restoration

Restoring your soul
A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“He restores my soul.” ~Psalm 23:3 (ESV)

Every moment of each day has the potential to be filled with hope or filled with despair. Daily living may include activities which give us joy or bring on stress. Smiles one moment and tears the next moment. From employment worries, financial concerns, health issues, relationship challenges and “to do” lists invading our thoughts and making the heart beat faster and the pulse feel like you're running a never-ending race. We can become consumed with worry.

Have you ever experienced one of those days? A day when everything seemed to be going wrong? A time when the car wouldn’t start, the bills are overdue, the dinner burned on the stove, the laundry machine overflowed onto the floor, the school is calling with news of a bad situation or any other worrisome event.

Pause for a moment. In those seemingly endless situations where you felt like all you could do was fall to the floor and cry, what was your initial reaction? What was your response to everything happening around you? What about things you have no control over? What about things you do have control over and they still went the wrong way?

Did you blame someone? Did you blame God? What were the first words out of your mouth or the first thoughts in your mind? Was your question something like, “Why God? Why do bad things keep happening to me and my family? What is the reason? How can we go on like this? I can’t take this anymore. I don’t know what to do.”

I have experienced those awful days. Times when my heart has broken into pieces and I felt deeply at a loss for a remedy to the situation. Through medical diagnosis of breast cancer and the after-effects of surgery and treatment, to the loss of both of my parents, to job changes and financial concerns and so much more, I have been that person who fell to my knees and asked, “Why? Lord, are you trying to teach me something? What is the purpose in all of this mess?”

The storms of life hit and thankfully, I have a way to find peace and comfort. Yes, I still encounter the storms and stumble through them. But, I am not alone. You are not alone.

Through learning to rely on God and not myself, I found an answer to help me. No, the problems aren’t all “fixed”. Yet, there is one response to my worry that comforts me the most.

You may ask, “What? How can anyone find comfort in the saddest of times?”

My answer is this. Call out to God. Cry to Him. Give Him your joys and your concerns. He knows your heart already. He is waiting for you. Share your thoughts and your pain with Him. Talk with God. He is ready to restore your soul.

Saying His name provides comfort for
me.

Father ... Jesus ... God ... Savior ... Creator ...

Those are just some of His names. Breathe in and say His name. Breathe out and say His name. Concentrate on Him.

Pause...say His name. Call to Him. He is listening. Let Him restore your soul.

Problems and stressful times will come and go. God will always be here for us. Remember that His love is overflowing and never-ending. He loves you.

Have a glorious and blessed day,

Melissa Henderson
