Congratulations on the publication of your holiday story! Let’s talk about it …

Alexis: Why do you believe that Jesus is the reason for the season?

Michelle: I believe Jesus is the reason for the season because He is the whole reason we celebrate Christmas. God gave us the greatest gift when He sent His Son to earth on that first Christmas Day.

Alexis: How do you go about showing your readers the reason for this belief?

Michelle: I have written five Christmas-themed children’s books including “C is for Christmas”, and in all of them, I try my best to point readers back to Jesus. In “C is for Christmas”, I intentionally meshed traditional family themes and biblically significant images. For instance, A is for Angels who announced the birth of Jesus, while O is for Ornaments that we hang on the tree each year.

Alexis: What do you want readers to remember most about this Christmas holiday book? Why?

Michelle: My hope is that families will use “C is for Christmas” as one of their 12 books of Christmas, and incorporate the reading of “C is for Christmas” into their family’s holiday traditions year after year. I want all of my children’s books to be infused with hope and heart, and I also desire that my books be fun to read aloud. I think we hit the mark with “C is for Christmas” on all three of those goals. I’m very proud of this little picture book that Little Lamb Books published. Of all of my books, this one has won the most awards—8 in all!

Alexis: Did you listen to Christmas music while writing this story? If so, share your favorite song.

Michelle: I am obsessed with Christmas, so I begin listening to Christmas music even before Halloween. My children always tease me about that. But, no, I didn’t listen to Christmas music while writing “C is for Christmas” but I did watch a lot of Christmas Hallmark movies. I wrote while they played in the background.

Alexis: In what ways do you hope this book will bring parents and children together while reading it?

Michelle: I love a book that encourages that special cuddle-up time—kids on parents’ laps, reading together, and making precious memories. I would love “C is for Christmas” to bring families together in that way.

Alexis: What makes the Christmas holiday season so delightful and how did you capture and show these celebratory elements in your book?

Michelle: Christmas and family traditions go hand-in-hand, and I think “C is for Christmas” features many of those favorite family celebratory holiday moments, such as: baking cookies together, hanging ornaments on the tree, visiting family and friends, wrapping presents and tying ribbons on each package, etc. Though I only wrote the words for this special Christmas picture book, the artwork really brings it to life. I am so grateful for Louis Hargreaves, the talented illustrator, who partnered with me on this project.

Alexis: In what ways do you think that Jesus being the reason for this season brings hope to the world?

Michelle: If the world ever needed hope, it’s now. Sure, Christmas has become somewhat commercialized over the years, but this year, many people have slowed down and focused on what is really important in life—faith and family. With Jesus at the center of our lives and all of our family get-togethers and celebrations, faith and love and hope will also dwell. As we keep Jesus the center of our lives, that hope will live big in us and radiate to all we encounter.

Alexis: Thanks for the interview, Michelle! Would you like to share closing thoughts?

Michelle: In all of my books, whether I’m writing for women or children, the message of hope and encouragement is a common thread. But, during the Christmas season, I also want to share about the real meaning of Christmas—that Jesus is the best present of all. Merry Christmas!

Cairo’s Christmas Journey:

Congratulations on writing and publishing this Christmas story! Let’s talk about it …

Alexis: Why did you write this book?

Janet: I have always loved the Christmas story…the bright star beaming, hosts of angels singing, and a tiny baby resting in a lowly stable. But I wanted to retell it in a new way, with a slightly different message…and a super fun main character, of course!

Alexis: In what ways do you hope that this holiday story will bring parents and children together as they read it?

Janet: This story is fun and engaging to read. There is a lot of action along the way. I know that I enjoy reading it to little ones as much as they enjoy hearing it. It is just one of those stories that begs for fun voices and dramatic reading. It is a great experience for everyone, and I hope it proves to be a story that gets read over and over as we prepare our hearts for the coming of our Savior.

Alexis: Tell us about Cairo. How did you come up with this character’s name? What is Cairo’s mission? How far will this character have to travel until he reaches his destination?

Janet: Cairo is a tiny cricket that has used his gift of music to help others find rest. He has traveled far and wide and is currently working with a bunch of shepherds outside of Bethlehem. These poor shepherds have some sheep that don’t like to go to sleep at night. Cairo uses his gifts to help them fall asleep. On the night Jesus is born, an angel comes to Cairo to ask him to play his music for the restless newborn Messiah. While the shepherds are just a few miles outside of Bethlehem, when you are only an inch tall, that is nearly an impossible journey. But nothing is impossible with God.

Alexis: What are the hardest and easiest parts of Cairo’s journey to Bethlehem?

Janet: Cairo runs into all sorts of challenges on his trip. From a cluster of grumpy blackbirds, to a sticky situation with an anthill, there is not much about Cairo’s journey that isn’t hard. But along the way he meets some new friends…friends that are just as willing to share their gifts with Cairo as Cairo is to share his gifts with the Messiah. Cairo soon learns that these helpers that God sent him along the way can help smooth out even the bumpiest of journeys.

Alexis: Why does Cairo want to play a song for the newborn Messiah? Will this be an original song that he composed? Or a tune that’s already known?

Janet: Cairo loves to play his music, and when the angel asks Cairo to play for the new baby, he is honored, even though the journey is daunting. Cairo’s music is something unique and special to him. It is a brand-new tune…a soothing tune…one that only Cairo can play. Cairo’s music has been bringing rest to the rowdy sheep night after night. He is happy to share that gift with the new family in Bethlehem.

Alexis: What role does faith in God play in this story?

Janet: The angel has asked Cairo to do a big job. Being just a tiny cricket, the journey into Bethlehem could take days. But Cairo needs to get there that night. The angel tells Cairo that God will send him all the help he needs to get there. Cairo has to believe that God will help him on his journey. Cairo’s big faith and his new friends get him to his destination.

Alexis: What lesson are you hoping to teach young children through this story?

Janet: I want kids to know that even though they are small, they have so much to offer to God and others. Maybe, like Cairo, their gift is music...maybe they like to help their grandma make cookies…maybe they are a fast runner. Whatever talents they have, those talents make them special and God wants them to share those talents with His world, to help make it a better place.

Congratulations on writing your first book! Let’s talk about it …

Alexis: Why did you write this book?

Tori: I didn’t learn until I was an adult what the symbolism of red means at Christmastime. I was blessed to have both of my kids learn about it in their kindergarten classes a few years ago. I felt inspired to write a book about the significance of red so that all kids will be encouraged and reminded of the importance of the color and what it means – the gift of Jesus and how red can remind each of us of His ultimate loving sacrifice.

Alexis: What message are you hoping to get across to your readers with this book?

Tori: I want my readers to enjoy seeing all of the traditional red we have during the holidays and through that, I want them to stop and think of the meaning behind the color. I want readers to know deep in their hearts that Jesus came into the world to live and die for them and to be raised again.

Alexis: What was the most fun part of writing this Christmas holiday story?

Tori: I think the most fun part had to do with the inspiration of the whole book. It came to me when I wasn’t looking for it, so it was a welcome surprise. Everything flowed so naturally that it felt like I just had to write it. It was also fun to brainstorm all of the red things at Christmas and see how I could tie them into the story.

Alexis: Why is the color red such an important part of this story?

Tori: The color red really is the main character of the book. I tried to illustrate it as the main character as well as write about it in that way. I feel like it’s so important because all of the little red details throughout the book point to Jesus. It drives home for us that Jesus is the reason for the season.

Alexis: Not only are you a debut author, you’re also an amazing illustrator! What was your inspiration as you created the pictures for this book? What program or method did you use to illustrate?

Tori: Thank you so much for saying that! It was a dream to illustrate. I love a simple and clean aesthetic, especially with this story, because I feel like it showcases the color of red the most. Your eye has no place to rest except for on the shades of red. I would say that my inspiration was my collection of vintage fabric that I have had for years. I did all of the line work with soft charcoal pencils, which I love so much, and then I scanned them into Photoshop and manipulated them from there as needed. I then did digital collage work once I figured out how I wanted the lines to look.

Alexis: Did you listen to Christmas music while writing this story? If so, which song inspired you the most?

Tori: What a thoughtful question. I wish I could answer “yes”, but to be honest, I really don’t listen to music as I write and I didn’t listen to Christmas music during the illustration process. I wish I would have! “Mary, Did You Know” is my favorite Christmas song year after year, though, because it’s a fresh and creative way to look at the Christmas story. It stops me in my tracks every time I hear it.

Alexis: In what ways do you hope this story will bring parents and children together as they read it?

Tori: I love that you ask this question because it’s a dream to think of children and parents coming together as they read it. I want it to be a springboard for the season that families can notice red things together while they are out and about and then talk about it’s true meaning. Also, I believe that any time families sit down and read together is time well spent. It helps build strong bonds and to think that my book could play a small part in that truly warms my heart.

Congratulations on writing this book, “Gracie Lou Wants a Zoo” for children! 

Let’s talk about it …

Alexis: What inspired this story?

Shelly: My daughter, Gracie, was the inspiration for Gracie Lou Wants a Zoo. She has always loved animals . . . and is just a tad headstrong and persistent. Bless her! We’ve never seen an animal that she didn’t ask to take home. Our home has been blessed with a hamster, cat and two dogs, but it isn’t enough. Gracie literally wants a house packed with critters!

I remember one day after saying ‘no’ for the thousandth time to a new pet, I said, “Gracie Lou you won’t be happy ‘til you have a zoo!” The phrase stuck in my head and I decided it was a great way to share a lesson on patience and trusting God’s timing.

I’ve often told Gracie that God created her for a purpose and that she would see her dreams come true in His timing. Gracie is a teen now and plans on becoming a veterinarian. So, the book concludes with a look into the future possibilities when you trust in God.

Alexis: When you were a child, did you want your own zoo just like Gracie Lou?

Shelly: I’ve always loved the zoo. Our local zoo was one of my favorite family outings as a child. We always visited the local zoo on our family vacations as well. As an adult, I continued to take my own children throughout their young years. However, I must admit that I’m not really an animal person. That’s why Gracie heard “no” so many times! I admire people who are animal people and was always fascinated by zookeepers who were never hesitant or unafraid among wild animals.

Alexis: Gracie Lou is the star of this story. Describe her personality. Share her dreams. Has she always had such a heart for animals?

Shelly: Gracie Lou is a headstrong gal with a soft, gooey inside—her tremendous love for animals. She knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to ask for it! However, she needs a little lesson in the value of patience and trusting God for her future. She also needs to understand that a “no” from Mom and Dad isn’t the end of the world!

Alexis: What does Gracie want to be when she grows up? Why?

Shelly: Gracie Lou most definitely wants to be a veterinarian or something that allows her to care for and love on animals of all sizes and shapes.

Alexis: How long has Gracie had her pet turtle, George, and why does she want him to have friends?

Shelly: George is Gracie Lou’s sidekick. He’s really the only pet that her parents feel can be kept in their small apartment. George loves Gracie Lou and she loves George!

Alexis: Why won’t Gracie’s parents allow her to have more pets?

Shelly: Gracie Lou and her parents live in the city in a small apartment. Her parents don’t think there is enough room for her to have any other pet but George.

Alexis: How does the real-life lesson of learning how to trust God’s plan, apply to this story?

Shelly: In the story, you see that Gracie Lou’s dream and passion for animals will be fulfilled when she discovers God’s plan for her life as an adult. She becomes a veterinarian. Our current circumstances are not the end of our story. God has a great plan for your life and you can often glimpse it when you consider your passions and talents. However, you must be patient and understand that you still have a lot of growing to do before you get there. God loves you and will guide you.

Alexis: What is one of the faith lessons that Gracie learns in this story and how does it help her in life?

Shelly: Gracie learns the importance of patience and trusting God. She learns that we don’t always get what we want immediately and that’s OK. It’s not the end of the story.

Alexis: What role does your real-life faith in God play in your storytelling?

Shelly: I’m a simple girl and love simple faith lessons. Childlike faith is a very powerful thing! I’m so blessed when God turns the light bulb on during real-life interactions that allow me to explain principles of faith from Scripture to children. I’m blessed and strengthened with these simple stories that God speaks into my heart!

I also think stories are such a great way to explain eternal concepts. Jesus used parables so effectively. My favorite parts of Scripture are the stories! I still get new inspiration from biblical stories no matter how many times I read them.

Alexis: What message from this story do you hope resonates with the children who read it? 

Shelly: My hope is that God will use this story to give parents the opportunity to discuss faith with their children. There are a few different aspects of faith and life in the story that might open the door to a deeper discussion between parents and children—patience, obedience, trust, God’s plan and purpose.

Alexis: What life lessons have you learned about faith in God and trusting His plan over your own?

Shelly: Gracie Lou’s passion is animals. Mine has always been writing and storytelling.

I’ve seen how God has worked throughout my life to grow and nurture that talent and desire for his purposes. I went to college to earn a degree in journalism and worked for a decade in the newspaper business. God then opened the door to work for ministries using the skills I had gained through my early career.

Now, I am blessed to tell the real-life stories of people whose lives have been transformed through different ministries across the country. I’ve told the stories of ministries that provide Bibles to those who have no Scripture in their own heart language. I’ve been able to shine a light on the plight of orphans and victims of tragedy.

The stories God has given me to share has even saved the lives of preborn babies. I’ve been blessed for more than 20 years to write these inspiring stories and raise funds for the ministries that make all these efforts possible. Today, I write for Focus on the Family. God knows the future and we can trust him to shape and mold our talents and passions for his purposes.

Congratulations on writing this story “Kind Soup” for children! Let’s talk about it …

Alexis: Why did you write this story?

Jean: I wrote this story as a framework for children to not only learn about the Fruits of the Spirit listed in Scripture, but as an opportunity to look around us and see how many things we have and work that are chances to develop and live in the virtues daily. There are simple ways to show kindness, love, joy, peace, patience, self-control, faithfulness, and gentleness throughout our days, and sometimes we don’t even know we’re sharing these values. Writing this book was a way to share an intentional and impactful example of sharing the Fruits of the Spirit.

Alexis: Who are you hoping to reach with this story? Why?

Jean: The book is written for children, with target ages Kindergarten through third grade, however I have many younger and older readers of all ages who have shared their interest and love of the book. The target audience’s age is centered within a time formidable learning for children. However, it’s a great reminder to readers of all ages about these virtues, and their gifts that help us, and others through our journeys and adventures together.

Alexis: I think that the concept of “soup made with fruit” as a tie-in to the Bible-based “Fruit of the Spirit” is pure genius! What (or who) inspired you with this concept?

Jean: Thank you! I was inspired as my children and I were making our homemade chicken soup. I tend to create characteristics and silly antics with animals, nature and other objects, just to have fun with our children. When we dropped the chunks of chicken into the stock pot one afternoon, they bubbled and bounced in the hot water. It made think of ‘Joy’ as the chunks bubbled up and down. We were also making a batch of soup to share, and the ideas kept rolling from there with the story.

Alexis: Why did you choose Kate and her Mom to be the main characters of this story?

Jean: I used these two characters ultimately, however I had started out with a brother and sister, and additional family characters being introduced. My story began to get too long, and off target. So I revised, and I removed those additional characters. I also have several additional children’s books penned incorporating fathers and sons, groups of boys and girls, mothers and sons, and fathers and daughters. So I knew I had a couple opportunities to showcase those relationships and their development.

Alexis: Describe the personalities and heart of Kate and her Mom. What do they look like?

Jean: Kate is a curious little girl, filled with kindness and acceptance, hope, joy and wonder. Her mom has a heart to share a deeper meaning to a task, and story the themes of the virtues, but also the depth of having a friend in Jesus as the one who taught her the lessons found in the book. She is kind, happy, patient, loving, faithful and humble.

Alexis: In what ways do you hope that real-life mommies and their baby girls will bond as they read this story together?

Jean: My hope is that mommies and their littles will develop a love for being together in the simple moments. Sometimes cooking can feel routine and mundane, but when you’re intentional, creative and put God at the center it takes the ordinary to extraordinary. Kind Soup is a multi-layered book, also. There’s the opportunity to share random acts of kindness, along with spreading the ‘Fruits of the Spirit’ in many ways, and there’s the part of the ‘friend’ in Jesus that the momma talks about who taught her. Having our children and readers know that they have a friend in Jesus is important. He’s with us in every action, supports us, cheers us on, and smiles with us, as our Friend, when we share the goodness of Him that’s indwelling in us. There’s also the community spirit of getting out and helping others. Through our actions, we can be a light for someone, no matter the size of the gesture...doing something for another helps them as well as us.

Alexis: Is this story for boys and their daddies to read together too? In what ways do you make this story relatable to males?

Jean: This is a very applicable read for anyone. When I read it in school and public events, the boys love to talk about how they cook with their Dads, or that they go to their neighbors to help shovel snow. It gives me such joy to listen to them share how they each resonate the concepts within the story.

Alexis: Describe the setting for this story. What makes it special?

Jean: The setting is a warm and cozy kitchen filled with the aroma of homemade soup wafting throughout the air. It’s a place that resonates the ‘feel’ of the fruit of the Spirit. There’s love between the characters, joy in the moments together, peace as they learn and work together, patience when they’re preparing the soup and taking it out into the community, kindness in their heart for each other and those they want to share their goodness they’ve prepared, self-control in equipping themselves as they make the soup and carry it beyond their home, and faithfulness as Kate finds the most important part of making the soup, and how the Jesus is at the heart of it all from the very first idea and ingredient, to the last friend it was shared with, and Kate realizing who her friend is and how much of a friend He was to her mommy too.

Alexis: What life lessons are you trying to teach the children who read this story?

Jean: The life lessons are how to incorporate the Fruits of the Spirit in everyday life, and Jesus is at the heart of it all. These virtues are fostered and grow with us, and the more we fill ourselves with Holy water, the more these grow and spread to those around us. We can share them, as they have been shared with us, in many ways and on any given day. Why? Because that what the good Lord has asked us to do, to be a light for Him.

Alexis: In what ways did you pray yourself through writing this book?

Jean: I began this book praying this scripture, Galatians 5:22-23, and it truly developed from there, notebook and pencil I started writing. I did not realize how much I would lean onto this scripture as the book developed, and it became the heartbeat of the whole process.

Alexis: How does your real-life faith in God affect your storytelling?

Jean: The good Lord prompts me strongly to write, and He weaves the characters and scenes into play. Many times, as I write my weekly children’s column, I start with a base idea, and the words just come freely and create the story that is meant to be told for the week I am writing. The good Lord weaves the story, and I just write it down.

Alexis: What do you want readers to remember most about this book?

Jean: Kindness, Love, Learning, Jesus and Togetherness

Congratulations on writing this book “God’s Blessings of Fall” for children! Let’s talk about it …

Alexis: Why did you write this book?

Jean: I love God’s creation in the natural world. I find the Fall season to be especially beautiful. I want young children to appreciate the beauty and gifts of Fall, too.

Alexis: What was your inspiration behind this story?

Jean: When my grandson, Mikey, was about four years old we were playing in my backyard one fall day. He was so delighted by the falling leaves and having such a wonderful time that I wanted to capture that feeling for other children.

Alexis: Why did you choose the Fall season to be the theme of this book?

Jean: There are four books in the Bountiful Blessings series. God’s Blessings of Fall was the first one we published. Hopefully the next book will be coming out soon.

Alexis: How does your real-life faith in God impact your storytelling?

Jean: Wow! That’s a mouthful. Every manuscript comes out of the mind God gave me, the imagination He blessed me with, the hope and joy and peace He gives me. I hope the manuscripts all reflect His gifts, His love, His redemption to those who read them.

Alexis: What role does belief in God play in this fictional story?

Jean: The animals, the colors, the signs of the season of fall are all gifts to us from God’s Hand. I don’t think I can write anything without remembering that it all comes from Him.

Alexis: How do you tell this story? Do you use main characters or do you tell it through your voice as the narrator speaking about all of the elements that make up the Fall season?

Jean: I told this story as a narrator. I am trying to give the reader a panoramic view of the natural world around them in the Fall of the year.

Alexis: What lessons are you trying to teach children through this book?

Jean: That all the beauty around us is a gift from our loving God. It all flows from His creative heart to ours.

Alexis: In what ways do you hope that parents will bond with their children as they read this book?

Jean: Each great picture book is designed to be an experience shared between adult and child. I hope many parents and grandparents spend chilly afternoons cuddled up with their kids, reading and oohing and ah-ing over God’s Blessings of Fall. I also hope they make it a Fall family tradition to read it to their kiddos at Thanksgiving to remind their kids to be grateful to God during that season.

Alexis: What is your favorite feature about the Fall season? Why?

Jean: Oh, my goodness! The colors, the smokey/musty smells, the chilly winds, warm sweaters and hot teas.

Alexis: Do you have a favorite Fall treat that you like to indulge in every year, such as pumpkin flavored drinks from Starbucks or cinnamon apple flavored candy from the store?

Jean: I bake! During the fall I try every apple, pumpkin and squash recipe I can find. And then, I share the goodies with people I love.

As a pre-teen Jean dreamed of being an architect or an interior decorator. 

As a high school student she dreamed of being anything BUT a teacher. As a college student she dreamed of being a vocalist. As an “over-fifty” woman she dreamed of writing stories for children. But, as life unfolded it seemed that none of those dreams would come true.

But, Jean spent twenty-six years teaching children and teens–and loving it! Then twenty more years teaching women’s Bible studies. She never designed a house, but she lived in, and decorated on a shoestring, more than a dozen houses. She never performed before thousands, nor recorded any music. But she sang hundreds of times leading people in praise to the LORD. Now, she is working hard and trusting God to lead her down the road to traditional publication.

In 2016, Jean signed her first book contract with Little Lamb Books for the Bountiful Blessings series of four picture books about the seasons. The Blessings of Fall was released in September 2019.

Sometimes our dreams come true in ways we couldn’t imagine. Jean’s have. Interview with Janet L. Christensen about her book 

“Good Night, Fireflies”:

Congratulations on writing this book “Good Night, Fireflies” for publication! 

Let’s talk about it …

Alexis: Why did you write this book with a focus on fireflies?

Janet: When my youngest son was little, he used to be afraid of the dark. I remember one trip away from home that we forgot to pack his nightlight. We were all ready for bed, and I had to get dressed again and go out and purchase a nightlight before we could go to sleep. So, writing a book that spoke to kiddos about their fears had always been important to me. The fireflies? That was all God.

Alexis: How did you receive the inspiration for this story?

Janet: I run pretty fast and furious most days. Between working full-time, raising a family, helping out with different ministry projects, and writing, my mind is constantly working through one project or another. I bet you, and a lot of your readers, can relate. Getting my mind to quiet so that I can just listen to God is sometimes a challenge. Well, God found a way around that. He always does. How did He catch my mind completely quiet and ready to listen? He woke me up at 3 o’clock one morning. I found myself wide awake with the most beautiful story about fireflies dancing in my head. Then, of course, I was too excited to go back to sleep.

Alexis: The hero of your story is a boy named Landon. Tell me about him. What does he look and sound like? What are his hobbies? What does Landon want to be when he grows up?

Janet: Landon is sweet little boy, with a big heart and a glint of adventure in his eyes. He is fearless in all things by day, but when the lights go out, his fears of monsters chase him. He likes dinosaurs and superheroes and playing with his cat. And he loves spending time with his daddy. What does he want to be when he grows up? That is a good question. We haven’t really talked about that one. But I think Landon would be a great entomologist. He came up with some great observations on those fireflies.

Alexis: Why does Landon want to do anything but sleep?

Janet: Landon is afraid of the shadow monsters that hide in his room after the lights go out. He will do anything to delay going to bed, even brush his teeth twice! Landon knows that as soon as his daddy turns off the lights and walks out of the room, the monsters will once again sneak out of their daytime hiding places to scare him.

Alexis: How does Landon’s daddy use faith in God to ease his fears about bedtime?

Janet: When Landon can’t quite picture how God can be with him since he can’t see Him, Landon’s daddy takes him outside into the summer night to catch fireflies. When they finally catch one, Landon’s daddy asks him if the firefly disappears when its light goes out. When Landon discovers that the firefly is still there, even when its light goes out, his daddy tells him that God is just like that firefly. Even though we can’t see Him, He is always with us and is there to help us when we are afraid.

Alexis: What role does your real-life faith in God play in your storytelling?

Janet: I think it plays a huge role. I really believe that He wants to use my storytelling talent to encourage others in their own personal faith journey. I enjoy writing for all ages, but the fun part of writing for kids, is the challenge of taking the abstract concepts of faith, love, and hope, and making them visual and relatable for young ones. I am blessed and humbled that He has allowed me to pen the beautiful stories He has given me for this purpose.

Alexis: What do you want readers to receive from reading this book?

Janet: I want readers to know that God is with them through all of the challenges they are facing. We are living in a turbulent time right now. It bothers me, even with my strong faith, to watch what is happening in the world. But God is still on His throne and no matter what happens down here, He will never leave us. He loves each and every one of us too much for that.

Alexis: If you could step into this story as Landon’s mommy, what would you do to comfort him?

Janet: I am not sure I would have done anything differently from Daddy. He hit it out of the proverbial park on this one. I would have hugged Landon, of course, and reiterated Daddy’s message. Then I would have probably baked him some cookies the next day, and we could have talked about it over cookies and milk. I would love to hear Landon retell what happened the night before in his own words.

Alexis: Do you (the author) like fireflies? Why or why not?

Janet: I absolutely love fireflies! Where I grew up, we didn’t have fireflies. But when I was a young girl, we would visit my dad’s cousin every summer on the way back east to see my grandparents. I remember giggling as my sisters, cousins and I tried to catch these elusive glowing bugs. It is a memory that brings a smile to my face every single time.

Alexis: Thanks for the interview, Janet! Would you like to share closing thoughts?

Janet: I wrote Good Night, Fireflies six years ago, but God’s perfect timing released it right before all the chaos of this year. He knew this was the perfect time to share this story of overcoming fear with the world. While I was fretting and stewing over failed publishers and other publication challenges and setbacks, He had it all worked out. All that to say, even though the times we are living in feel so out of control, God is here with us every step of the way. And He will work it out for His glory in His perfect time.

Q&A with Rachel Pellegrino, founder of Little Lamb Books: 

Thanks for agreeing to this interview! Let’s start by talking about you, Rachel.

Question: Are you married?

Answer: Yes, we celebrated 12 years in June.

Q: Do you have children?

A: I have an eight-year-old daughter and a 16-year-old stepson.

Q: What is your family life like?

A: We are a blended family that is constantly on the go and juggling calendars and schedules, and we have good days and bad days as we navigate all our adventures together. But, we are very family-focused and we spend quite a bit of time with grandparents and making memories, whether in our own backyard or traveling to our favorite places.

Q: What is your favorite color?

A: Purple, of course!

Q: Do you prefer to drink a cup of coffee or tea?

A: I’m not a coffee drinker, so in the fall and winter, it’s absolutely hot tea with milk and sugar. Summer is all about ice cold sweet tea.

Q: Who is your favorite author as an adult?

A: Dee Henderson wrote my favorite adult series ever. Right now, though, you’ll find me reading quite a bit by Lynette Eason and Jody Hedlund.

Q: What was your favorite book when you were a child?

A: Little Women by Louisa May Alcott left the biggest impression for me as a young girl.

Q: Why do you believe in God and choose to follow Jesus Christ?

A: I gave my heart to Jesus as a young child and following Him has been the one constant in my life. He gives me purpose and continues to be the most reliable, trustworthy, and dedicated best friend. Even when I’m hard to love, He loves me. Even when I’ve given up, He carries me through the hard times, and there’s been a few! I may not always understand His plans and schedule, but following Jesus is the best decision I ever made.

Now that we know you a bit better, let’s talk about your publishing company that you launched in 2015 … 

Q: What led you to start Little Lamb Books?

A: I started Little Lamb Books for a few different reasons. First, after having my daughter I knew I wanted to do something that would leave a legacy of faith for her in the future. There are really wonderful books on bookshelves everywhere, but there is a void when it comes to books that are both entertaining and faith-filled. I want my daughter to grow up having books full of God’s truths that she can cherish and pass on to her kids. The second reason was that after 15 years in the classroom as a middle school and high school teacher, I was a proponent of students knowing how to read and enjoying it. I wanted to build a company that was focused on creating inspiring stories, entertaining characters, and colorful settings.

Q: How is your company filling a gap in the faith-based children’s book world?

A: There are good books that re-capture Bible stories straight from the Bible. There are even some great concept books available by amazing celebrity authors. But, where I think Little Lamb Books excels is producing realistic fiction that not only tells a story founded on biblical principles, but tells it in such a way that is entertaining and fun for young readers. Plus, we partner with authors, whether they are well-known or not. I think that makes us unique.

Q: In what ways can people support your small business?

A: There are several ways parents, pastors, educators, and librarians can support our small business. First, they can buy our books! We have a variety of titles from picture books to young adult novels. Second, they can tell other friends, family and colleagues about our books. Word of mouth is such a big encouragement for new purchases. Third, write a review. If someone has purchased our book and loved it, we would really appreciate an honest review and not just on Amazon. Barnes & Noble, Target, Walmart and other places love having product reviews. The more positive reviews we have, the better. Lastly, we are currently hosting a Kickstarter campaign because of the impacts of the Coronavirus. This is a temporary opportunity that will expire in August, but if anyone would like to pledge their support in a monetary way, we are trying to raise funds to produce and market our books over the next year, and every dollar counts.

Q: How will people who contribute to the Kickstarter campaign for Little Lamb Books, help your publishing company’s mission?

A: Our mission is to shepherd the next generation of faithful readers and in order to do this, we have to invest in our authors, our books, our business. Starting a business from scratch is challenging in the best of times. Throw in a pandemic, and well, you lean on your faith minute by minute not just day by day. If fully funded, this campaign will allow us to reward our supporters and fans as well as assist us in producing our 2020-2021 catalog and keeping our family-oriented business open so we can put faith-filled books in the hands of families.

Q: What difference do you want Little Lamb Books to make not just in the publishing world, but in the life of your young readers?

A: Our books are inspired by our faith in God and the Bible. We have three new titles releasing this year and over four titles next year that talk about everything from being kind to loving God’s design for your life to making good choices. All of these messages are positive and uplifting and important for kids to hear.

Q: Who are your bestselling, award-winning authors? Name the top two or three and mention what awards they’ve won.

A: Almost all of our titles have won at least one or two awards, which is pretty awesome. Currently, these three have found quite a bit of success:

1) Shelly Roark, author of The Bubble Who Would Not POP! and Gracie Lou Wants A Zoo, has won a gold Benjamin Franklin Award from the Independent Book Publishers Association and silver in the Illumination Awards.

2) Michelle Medlock Adams is the author of C is for Christmas, which has won gold in the Illumination Awards, bronze in the Moonbeam Awards, and gold in the Benjamin Franklin Awards.

3) Launch, book 1 in Jason C. Joyner’s Rise of the Anointed young adult series, has won gold in the Illumination Awards and won Best Debut in The Realm Awards.

Q: In what ways is your publishing company comparable to Harvest House and Zondervan?

A: The quantity of titles and the genres of titles we all produce varies greatly, but I think overall, we are each wanting to provide families with resources and partner with them through content that is biblically sound and trustworthy. We all produce illustrated picture books and strong chapter books and that’s really good for young readers.

Q: What are your hopes and dreams for Little Lamb Books in the next 5 to 10 years?

A: My hopes and dreams for this company are expanding daily and as long as God is in the center of it, I believe He has a great story that He is writing with our company. I love watching Little Lamb Books growing and I hope that we can bring on additional staff. I know we will continue to search for fresh talent and diverse voices for our community. We plan to produce amazing titles and branch out and enjoy new opportunities, like hosting our very own conference.

Q: What do you want families to know about Little Lamb Books?

A: I want families to know that we publish high-quality books that are wholesome, clean, and safe for your children to read. Little Lamb Books are picture books, chapter books, and novels that will not only encourage kids in their faith in Christ, but will also entertain the whole family, teach them more about walking out their faith, and leave them wanting to read more.

Little Lamb Books: Company Spotlight

Writing Books for Kids from a Faith Perspective

As a faith-based children’s publisher, I can tell you without hesitation that there is a hole in the market for faith-based fiction for young readers. There are numerous devotionals, journals, coloring books, and other non-fiction titles to choose from, but what families are looking for are entertaining books to rival what kids are learning about from friends, finding at school book fairs, or picking up in local bookstores.

In fact, walk into any major bookstore, and you will find shelves of interesting books for kids that tell stories of dystopian worlds, royal contests, and magical mutants. There are wonderful board books about the alphabet and counting and picture books and early readers that are seasonal or solve mysteries or teach new recipes. And, all these books are well-written and encourage the reading habits of children.

But, for families longing for more stories founded on biblical principles, it can be challenging to find even one shelf in a local bookstore where they can find wholesome, clean, and faith-oriented books that they don’t have to scan first, especially as children become tweens and teens.

The count is even less for those books that tell children it’s okay to lean on Christ, okay to love the Lord who made them, and okay to pray when they are afraid, lonely, or worried…far less that offer biblical references for encouragement, strength, joy, and love.

Why is this?

I don’t have all the answers. But, I do know that this is why I launched Little Lamb Books. As a premiere publishing company, our mission is to shepherd the next generation of faithful readers by striving to produce three to five fiction titles a year for elementary, middle grade, and young adult readers. We want to put picture books, chapter books, and young adult novels that weave engaging plots with interesting characters in the hands of kids and encourage conversations about an almighty God that loves them and made them unique.

There is a hunger for stories that affirm a biblical worldview and celebrate God’s presence in our world as well as for stories that answer the need for colorful, entertaining, and yes, even humorous examples of characters overcoming obstacles, engaging in positive family relationships, and shining a light in a dark world, especially now, when nothing feels “normal” around us.

We need more writers wanting to grow in their God-given talent and build on their calling to write by creating wonderful fiction that enriches the imagination for the readers and inspires their love for reading while incorporating scripture, values, and salvation.

Our children read books to be entertained, to see themselves in the characters, to travel to new places, and to laugh and not feel alone. We need to give them those kinds of stories while encouraging discussions about challenging situations and believing in a God they cannot see or cannot touch.

As writers, we need to write stories for the elementary readers forming their own opinions and viewpoints with grace and dignity, integrity and kindness.

We need to write stories for middle grade girls and guys learning to stand up for themselves among their peers and how to value truth amidst the onslaught of virtual messages that distort the truth on a daily basis.

We need to create stories for high schoolers longing to be seen and heard, those young adults who value new worlds where love is real, friendships are valued, and diversity is accepted.

Rachel Pellegrino is the owner and publisher of Little Lamb Books, an award-winning publisher of children’s books.
