The Comfort Zone

“And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.” —Mark 10:49 (ESV)

There is much talk these days about the comfort zone.

It is considered to be a space you create. A place where you feel safe and secure in the midst of this big, bad world. Maybe you travel the same way to work every day because it’s familiar. Maybe you shop at the same grocery store because you know the contents of every aisle. But let’s look a little deeper.

Is it possible God might be calling you to a life outside of the secure walls you have built for yourself?

Don’t get me wrong, this doesn’t necessarily mean you need to sell all your belongings and head for the South American jungle to spread the gospel. Although God plants that desire into the hearts of some, He has also equipped them to thrive in the environment of the jungle. However, I’ll bet the thought of selling your home and going to some remote village in the middle of nowhere was the first thing that crossed your mind.

Sometimes God calls you to get up and step out of your comfort zone. He urges you to venture into the uncomfortable zone that leads you to freedom. Perhaps you need to move. Your current house payments feel like a chain around your neck and put unnecessary strain on your finances. Moving could create financial freedom. Maybe your job situation is stealing you away from your family and chipping away pieces of your soul. Are you willing to place the sign in the yard or give your boss a two-week notice? Be aware, both these steps require the courage to take action and a huge dose of faith.

The world doesn’t make this easy. It’s human nature to place our security in the arms of what’s familiar. However, making a lateral move into something you already know only mimics security.

As followers of Jesus Christ, our security is found in Him alone. God’s Word is filled with ordinary people just like us, people who stepped outside of their comfort zone and accomplished extraordinary things through Christ. Let’s take a peek into a slice of time in the life of one of God’s people.

In Exodus 3:1-4, we find Moses as he is tending to the flock. Suddenly his attention is captured by a bush that’s on fire. But oddly, even though the fire rages, the bush is not consumed! So, Moses walks over to get a closer look and then it happens. Moses literally hears God call his name out loud, “Moses! Here I am.”

Did you notice what happened there? Moses left his familiar position with the flock and walked toward the flames. This is a seriously brave move. I think all Moses had in mind was to see why the bush wasn’t burning up. But he got way more than he bargained for by taking action. He took a few steps forward.

If you feel familiarity is holding you prisoner, maybe it’s time to walk toward the fire. God wants to set you free from the false sense of security the enemy places before you. Ask Jesus for the courage to take a few steps of faith and place yourself outside of your comfort zone. Step over the self-imposed boundary and lean in, be aware of God’s presence and seek the light that sets your soul on fire.

Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus and remember that He has prepared a path just for you. He has equipped you with all you need. Every story has to start somewhere. Let your next adventure begin!

Let’s Pray:

Dear God,

Give me ears to hear what You are calling me to do. Show me a glimpse of your plans. Equip me with the courage to step forward and move out of the boundaries of my comfort zone. Fill me with faith to step over what’s holding me back and guide my path in alignment with your plans.

In Jesus’ name, I pray.

Devotionals for the Heart: Why we need to clear out the clutter in our life

Clearing Out the Clutter

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”—Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV)

When the snow melts away and the colors of spring cover the landscape, we get the urge to celebrate the occasion. We update our wardrobe to suit the weather and put away the blankets that are no longer needed.

If you’re feeling super ambitious what else can you do? You make your way from room to room, begin decluttering and fill in a big box for the local thrift store. This is the beginning of some serious spring cleaning. Full disclosure: I must admit that organizing spaces is one of my favorite things to do. I have no fear of giving things away or throwing them out and it gives me great joy to stand back and survey the newly organized closet. This is my happy place.

Expert organizers agree that the best technique for decluttering is to take everything out of the closet and off the shelves. Before you begin taking items out, designate a place for three piles—keep, donate, or throw it out. Why go through all this trouble? The purpose of a closet is not to store every pair of black shoes you’ve ever worn or pants that span from size six to 12. Items that you can’t wear or don’t wear are not allowed to occupy real estate in the closet. Let’s face it, do you really need that favorite shirt with the holes in it?

When you stand back and survey the empty closet you appreciate its purpose. It looks more spacious and invites you to think carefully about which items have earned the right to reside there for the next six months. Closets were meant to store items you use in an organized way so you can find them with ease.

Similar to closets, too much clutter in our lives hinders us from living abundantly. When our lives become overly busy our hearts and minds become weary and hinder our view of what’s important. Our bodies, minds and souls need time to rest. What can you do to get the rest you need? When you crawl into bed tonight, surrender everything to God. For the next six to eight hours, you are officially off duty. Trust God for rest. He is our fortress and offers freedom from worry and anxiety.

Clean out the clutter from the corners of your mind and hand it over to God. As rest your head on the pillow, He will renew your heart and restore for your soul.

Let’s Pray: Dear Father God, I thank You for the many ways You bring my focus back to You. When I feel distracted, anxious, and weary, please remind me of your goodness. Help me to surrender my distractions to the Father of all mercies and the God of all comfort. I can rest in your arms, and You will give me rest. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: When the birds of the desert sing praise to God

The Dawn Chorus

“Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”

—Matthew 6:26 (ESV)

This morning, my heart was touched by the Sonoran Desert’s fusion of colors and textures. I’ve lived here all my adult life, and it never ceases to amaze me.

If you’re unfamiliar with the desert, you might think it’s a desolate place filled with sand, cacti, and minimal vegetation. You would be right about the sand and cacti, but the desert offers much more. It’s a place of diversity, with Palo Verde trees, palms, and the grandeur of the saguaro cactus. Snow-capped mountains tower in the distance, and green velvet mesquite shrubs along the trails tell a story of God’s majesty and creativity.

What I love most about living here is the daily announcement of God’s morning mercies. Just before dawn, the chorus begins. The sun peaks over the tangerine horizon, and the birds of the desert sing praise for this glorious day. I close my eyes and listen. Joy fills their melody and washes over my soul. Oh, how I wish you could hear their song as they thank our Heavenly Father (God) for another day and all the possibilities it will reveal.

Even though the birds don’t make plans, God’s care for them is never-ending, and with each sunrise, they express their gratitude in song. If God cares for these magnificent creatures of the air, I can’t begin to fathom how much more God values us. We can learn something from the birds that soar effortlessly through the skies. Just like us, they don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but they seem genuinely surprised when the sun comes up, greeting each new sunrise as if it were the first they’ve seen.

Our God is a God of wonders, and His love encircles us with tender mercies. It’s astounding how many of His bounties escape my notice. The sun rises each morning and sets each evening. He holds the planets in orbit, and gravity keeps our feet on the ground. He created the stars in the sky (those in our view and beyond) and knows each of their names. This stirs my heart, and I ponder how many of God’s wonders have I neglected to see.

No one knows what today, tomorrow, or the day after will bring. But we can lift our voices and join the chorus with grateful hearts. God cares for the birds of the air and supplies their food. Yet, we are even more valuable to Him. When I hear these birds each morning, my entire being shifts into a posture of praise. Take care to listen to these fantastic creatures of the sky. Be still before the Lord, give thanks, and watch what He will do.

Let’s Pray:

Dear Heavenly Father,

You are the God of wonders! Help us to wake up each morning with a holy expectancy of what this day will bring. Teach us how to listen to these fantastic creatures of the sky. Help us to be still before You, thank You with a grateful heart then imagine the possibilities. Thank You, God, that your love for humankind is everlasting. Help us to fully embrace every new day with exuberance. Help us to praise You because your love has no boundaries and your grace is never ending. Praise be to God! In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: When you need to adjust your attitude and path

Do You Need an Attitude Adjustment?

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.”

—Proverbs 3:5 (NLT)

I’ve had a variety of teaching assignments in my years as an educator. However, one of the best was teaching Aviation Science at the school district’s Flight Center, which was designated as a field trip for all fifth-grade classes.

Whether you’re the pilot of a private plane or the captain of a major airliner, there are required safety checks before take-off. In addition, the pilot and navigator continually monitor the instrument panel throughout the flight. Each instrument has a specific job and looks for important things such as obstacles in its path, air speed, and altitude. The more time I spent at the Flight Center, the more I realized how safety checks could be applied to our everyday lives.

Do you ever feel as if you’re moving too fast, flying too high, going the wrong direction, or spinning towards a nose-dive? I’ve felt this way from time to time. That’s when I need to remind myself that we have access to the ultimate pilot who can help us avoid disaster. His name is Jesus Christ.

When we allow Jesus to take control of our lives, we can trust Him to know exactly what to do when we’re in danger. Imagine waking up each morning, grabbing a coffee, and spending time with Jesus for a safety check regarding your faith walk. This will make a difference in everything we do, because we’re putting God back into his rightful place as the captain of our lives.

There is one instrument on the flight deck that requires continual monitoring. This instrument shows when the plane is level, banked, climbing, or descending. It’s called the attitude indicator, which provides the pilot with critical information needed for the plane to arrive safely at its destination. It reminds me of a phrase repeated by teachers and parents at one time or another. They would say to the young people, “You need an attitude adjustment!” But isn’t it possible that grown-ups need an attitude adjustment from time to time?

The airplane pilot is responsible for safely getting passengers to their destinations, just as Christ is the director of our lives. As followers of Christ, we might want to consider this question: “Is Jesus the pilot of my life, or am I continually fighting for control?” Why do we tend to negotiate with God in attempt to take control and be the pilot of our own life when we are inexperienced and ill-equipped? Who are we to assume we should be in control? Why do we have such a need for control, knowing it will most likely lead us down the wrong path?

The attitude of our hearts should be level and heading straight toward Jesus. We need our Savior! As Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT) tells us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” 

Before flying into your day, position yourself before God and ask Him to check your attitude indicator. Approach Him with gratitude and humility, and He will make the necessary adjustments. When we put our trust in Him, then our heavenly destination is ensured.

Let’s Pray: Dear Father God, I come before You today, knowing that You are the Creator of the universe. You are aware of our inadequacies, and yet thanks to Jesus, we are flawless in your eyes. Help me to step out of your way, to give you all my heart, soul, and mind. Thank You for your faithfulness to me. I know that You will guide me on the path You have set for me, which ultimately leads to You. It’s in you alone I put my trust. Praise be to God! In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

When God calls you to move beyond your place of comfort

When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” –Exodus 3:4 (NIV)

I’ve always found comfort in writing. I kept a diary as a child and journaled as a young adult.

However, about five years ago, something changed. I felt God calling me to write with purpose and encourage women in their faith walk with Jesus Christ by sharing my stories. But lately, I’ve wondered if I’m getting too comfortable.

I have a favorite armchair in a cozy corner of our family room in our home. Each time, I settle in, put my feet up, slowly sink into its welcoming arms, and heave a big sigh. This is where I talk with Jesus every morning. I read the Bible and listen for His voice—all in the comfort of my little corner, in my favorite chair.

During my quiet time, I feel safe and secure amid the chaos of life. I talk with God, and He speaks to me through His Word and His presence. I wonder if I’ve become so comfortable that it prevents me from living the abundant life Christ wants me to live. Is it possible that an excess of comfort is a breeding ground for complacency?

Not long ago, I sensed God’s nudge regarding my writing because I kept it to myself. I’d been writing for quite a while but hadn’t shared it with anyone except my husband. It felt as though God gently tapped me on the shoulder and said, “Colleen, you need to share this with others.” I was terrified. Sharing my writing with others felt like bearing my soul through an intercom for all the world to hear. Once words take flight, they can’t be unheard or unread. What if I mess this up?

A few days passed, and reality took over. Realizing God didn’t ask me to read my writing on stage to a crowded auditorium, I got a grip on my fears. He asked me to share my pages with two trusted friends. They were kind, encouraging, and supportive. If I hadn’t taken that first step, no one would be reading these words now.

A few weeks later, I was reading chapter three in the Bible book of Exodus where Moses was tending to his flock. Suddenly, his attention was captured by a bush on fire. But oddly, even though the fire continued to rage on, the bush never burned to the ground. Moses approached the bush to get a closer look, and something remarkable happened! He heard God call his name.

When Moses left his comfortable position with the flock and walked toward the flames, God showed him that the bush was on fire but wasn’t being consumed. If Moses hadn’t taken those first steps of faith, he might never have been had such a powerful relationship with God. However, Moses took those brave steps and God used him to deliver the Israelites from bondage in Egypt.

When I feel my love for what’s comfortable is holding me prisoner, it’s time to walk toward the holy fire of God. He wants to free us from the false sense of security the enemy provides. God saved me from becoming an “armchair Christian” as I’d call it, by giving me the faith and courage to leave my cozy chair and take action. He can do the same for each of us.

When we ask Jesus Christ for courage, we’re able to take steps of faith and move outside of our comfort zones. As we become aware of God’s presence, we also gain the benefit of His leadership and our mission.

Let’s Pray: Dear Father God, I ask You to continue to give me the courage to step over my self-imposed boundaries and take action. Give me the faith to live a life of abundance. Position my heart to align with yours and open my ears to hear your calling on my life. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: God's mercies and faithfulness in our life

Between These Walls
A devotional by Colleen C. Howard

“For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.”––Psalm 100:5 (NIV)

Years ago, while house-hunting, my husband and I walked into a new house that had never been occupied.

We’d seen multiple listings and expected this one to disappoint like the others. As I lingered in its not-quite-finished rooms, a distinct feeling hovered over me. This felt more than just another listing. It was meant to be our home.

Somehow, I knew our teens would become adults between these walls, and we would grow older. Life would happen here. Sorrows and sadness, laughter and love, and the seemingly ordinary days that sometimes take your breath away would wash over our hearts and move us forward in life. God gave me a tiny glimpse of the future, and I was certain it would occur in this home.

Thirty years ago, we moved into this brand-new house, and it became our home. But in 2025, the time to say goodbye was knocking at the door of our hearts. We had to answer these important questions:

What will we leave behind? A house that served us well. It survived the desert heat, winds, and monsoon rains. Its walls, roof, and foundation are still in good condition despite the passage of time. But when we step out, we’ll leave behind our home and a piece of ourselves.

What will we take with us? Memories. Between these walls, there were celebrations—birthday parties, graduations, and anniversaries. Loved ones were lost while we lived here, and we mourned. Five grandchildren were loved, prayed for, and rocked to sleep in our arms. Five generations of our family have graced this house with their presence and their precious memories will remain in our hearts forever.

How will we say goodbye? With sadness and fondness. God saw us through victories and defeats, anger and reconciliation, and a multitude of unexpected events. Each moment we’ve spent here has reminded us that we’re part of God’s family, and His faithfulness is never-ending. Our hearts overflow with gratitude for the grace, comfort and mercies we’ve received from our Savior (Jesus Christ) while living between these walls.

We’re three decades older now. Our children are grown and our grandchildren are teens and young adults. When our moving day arrived, we said a heartfelt “Goodbye” to this home that served us well and a hearty “Hello” to the new adventures God has planned for us. Praise be to God, who is always faithful, good, and His love is never ending.

Let’s Pray:

Dear God,

Thank You for your faithfulness to us. We move through time and seasons seamlessly without giving it much thought. Help us to navigate our days with grace and heighten our awareness of your presence in our lives. Help us to notice the signs of shifting seasons and prepare us for the changes to come. As seasons come and go, we will turn to you our Lord and Savior. Praise be to God. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Trusting God to Do the Impossible for Us

My husband, Ken, has been navigating a jungle of confusion regarding one of his prescriptions.

This particular prescription involves an injection he’s taken every two weeks for seven years. Each injection is extremely expensive to purchase. This started with one simple change to our medical insurance. It’s been a trial. Maybe you have dealt with similar issues. But as I began to think it through, I realized the actions we took were based on what we believed to be accurate. However, we were wrong.

People believe many things about themselves, others, and the world around them, but how much of it is actually true? Human behavior is based on what we believe to be true. If the meteorologist predicts rain today, we dress accordingly. If we think we can sing in the choir, we give it a whirl. If we believe all Scripture is God-breathed and was breathed into the heart of man by God, our behavior should reflect our belief. This is not to say we’re perfect, but God can do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20).

Ken and I have used an insurance broker’s consulting services for years. However, due to the manufacturer’s policy change, we would need to pay a large sum out-of-pocket to receive his injections throughout the year. The broker provided additional details, and Ken contacted all involved in the process, but the confusion over the changes to our policy was excessive. This was a recent policy change, and even company employees were not experts in the latest procedures. We estimated that he spent the equivalent of a 40-hour work week making calls, waiting for return calls, switching between multiple providers, and receiving conflicting information. 

Then, the unexpected happened: We received a message from the pharmaceutical company explaining Ken was approved for the payment assistance program he’d participated in for seven years. No one even hinted this was a possibility. The change in insurance indicated the assistance program was non-existent as of the first of the month. Why would we pursue a path we were told had been obliterated?

But God can do the impossible. He stretched His hand down and parted the waters of confusion. By clearing away the miscommunications, Jesus Christ wisely placed the solution for us in a text from the pharmaceutical company, which brought financial relief and filled our hearts with gratitude.

If we trust God to help us overcome the waves crashing against us, He will grow our faith and deepen our trust in Him. The next time you feel there’s no way to escape what you believe is inevitable, raise your hands to the heavens, proclaim God’s promises are true, and remember, God can accomplish so much more than we could ever dream or do on our own.

Dear God,

Help us to trust your promises and not limit You by believing something is impossible. Help us to remember the times when we believed there was no way out and remind us how You came through for us. Thank You for your love, compassion and mercy. We rejoice in You and your never-ending faithfulness. We praise You, Lord! In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

The Dance
A devotional by Colleen C. Howard

“Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre.”—Psalm 149:3 (ESV)

There’s a bronze sculpture in my family room of a man and woman dancing together. This is a treasured gift from the past. It catches my eye each time I walk into the room and causes me to remember the night when that sculpture found its way into my heart and home.

One December evening after work, I arrived home late. When I walked through the door, I caught a whiff of something wonderful cooking in the kitchen. A fire flickered in the fireplace, music filled the room, and my husband greeted me with a hug. Walking toward the kitchen, I saw an elegant bronze sculpture of a man and woman dancing together. A decorative envelope with my name on it was propped against the sculpture. Anticipation began to build inside me as I took the envelope, carefully opened it, and then discovered a gift I had always longed for: a certificate for ballroom dancing lessons.

Three months of lessons with the man I adore by my side. It just doesn’t get any better. This gift was more than just dance lessons from his heart to mine. He did this just for me, and it made my heart sing. A gift that shouted, “I love you” all the way down to my soul. Thereafter, I learned a lot of life lessons through ballroom dancing classes.

The most basic lesson in ballroom dancing is someone must lead and someone must follow. Yes, we were aware of that going in, but I don’t think I gave it any serious thought. However, I suspect that my darling husband knew all along—we were not going to rock the ballroom dancing world. Our challenge? We march to different drummers. And believe me, this is a problem on the dance floor! So much for smooth beginnings. This was the first of many dance lessons that season. We never got the hang of it, but that didn’t stop us. We fumbled, stumbled, twisted, and turned our way through each lesson. It was a joyous time, and there was much laughter.

This sculpture represents love and reminds me that dancing with someone is a give-and-take of the heart. My husband and I have been doing the marriage dance for quite a while now, and it’s not a problem-free endeavor. Sometimes he leads, sometimes I lead, and sometimes we step on each other’s toes. The dance isn’t perfect, but the music keeps playing.

The lessons learned from ballroom dancing remind me of my walk with Jesus Christ. I’m often distracted by the chaos of life and stumble off the path God has prepared for me. In His perfect timing, He gently reminds me to be still, know He is in control, and wait for His lead. Other days, I’m in step with the Savior and feel His presence at every turn.

When you walk through life with faith in Jesus Christ, you enter into God's loving arms and the dance begins. He is the master choreographer, guiding you gracefully through every leap and every turn. God will hold you tight and let you soar. He loves you, delights in you, and pursues you relentlessly. Accept His invitation to dance and your life will never be the same.

Dear Jesus,

We rejoice as we praise you through prayer, music, and worship. Help us to remember you are in control. Just as life keeps moving forward, you’re faithful in guiding our steps, and will catch us when we fall. Praise be to God, the Father of all love and comfort. Please continue to lead us. Devotionals for the Heart: Why God wants us to count our blessings

Blessed

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.”—Ephesians 1:3 (NIV)

There’s a decorative plate on an easel in my kitchen. Since the plate is square, it’s always tilted to the side. No matter how often I straighten it, the plate keeps slipping as if determined to remain off kilter. Either that or the plate has a serious vendetta against my sense of tidiness.

This dish has always been one of my favorites. The word “Blessed” takes center stage with its beautiful, rich color palette. Each day, I straighten the plate, and each day it tilts, but I continue to repeat my actions. There’s a saying, “Insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result.” Apparently, I’m the poster child for this quote.

A few days ago, instead of straightening the plate, my eyes were drawn to the word blessed. That one slight shift caused my mind to take an unexpected turn. I stood there, staring at the plate. The words in Ephesians 1:3 struck me and I realized I have been blessed by God. I’m stubborn, tenacious and sometimes controlling, but in His mercy, He bestows blessings on me.

According to an article about what it means to be blessed, The Master’s University says being blessed means having inner peace, bliss, happiness, and an inward joy not produced by nor affected by circumstance. It’s a state of unshakeable well-being that comes from knowing God.

People who believe in God need to remember that they are blessed by Him. God has positioned us for a time such as this. We are blessed to reside in our imperfect bodies and live our imperfect lives—off kilter, off center, full of flaws, yet flawless in the eyes of our Savior (Jesus Christ). So, why is it difficult to remember that our identity is in Christ alone?

God says we are His children, overcomers and the apple of His eye. It’s our imperfections that make us genuine, and vulnerable. These are the qualities that make us approachable, which allows us to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

For a long time I was unsure of how to share Christ with others until God showed me that sharing is natural when it’s based on relationship. When I share Christ with a co-worker, friend, or family member, I can begin from a place of mutual understanding. It’s comfortable to share God’s truth when you have history of sharing meaningful conversations.

Several years ago, I shared the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with a dear friend who is also a co-worker. She’d been hurt by a church in the past and never went back. We had several conversations about God and how He has a plan and a purpose for her. Not too long after that she sent me a heartfelt text message for bringing her back to church and re-introducing Christ into her life. This is a beautiful blessing and a memory that I’ll treasure forever.

Today, may we embrace the love of the Good Shepherd, the Mighty One who sets us free. May His daily grace flood our hearts so we can focus on the many blessings He bestows on us.

Dear Lord,

We are grateful for your love, mercy, and the blessings you bestow upon us. Send your Holy Spirit to help us be consistent in setting aside time to reflect on your goodness and the power of your presence. Thank You for each new day and help us to be aware of the opportunities to share the Gospel with others. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.

One Small Step

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

—Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

I think of God’s command to be strong and courageous every time I open the door from my house to the garage. Yes, I’m referring to that giant room attached to your home that stores cars, tools, memories, and perhaps an extra fridge with some snacks.

But when I open the door to my garage all I see is darkness and being courageous is not my first thought. A tinge of fear shivers down my spine as I take my first step into the dark abyss. But the instant my foot hits the floor, light floods the garage as if it’s high noon on a hot summer day. Where is this light coming from? Its seemingly magical appearance is due to the motion-sensor light bulbs installed in our garage.

But in contrast, each morning when my feet hit the floor, I head for the kitchen. Without even thinking about it, I assume the coffee maker will fill my cup, the shower will offer a steady stream of warm water, and of course, the car will start when I turn the key. So, why do I easily place my faith in these conveniences, but sometimes hesitate to trust God? I don’t know about you, but it’s difficult for me to surrender the details of my life without knowing what’s coming next. However, uncertainty is a given when walking down the path of life. When you decide to move forward it takes faith and courage.

Many writers, politicians, and soldiers have described courage as not being the absence of fear, but moving forward in the face of it. Personally, I’m partial to John Wayne’s quote, “Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.”

When facing big decisions in the midst of a challenging season I know I need to turn to Jesus Christ and ask Him for wisdom. But humans are a complex mixture of faithfulness and fear. We want to trust, but we falter. We have faith, but it wavers. However, Jesus wraps us in His everlasting arms and is with us wherever we go.

But be aware, the enemy wants us to believe otherwise. How do we fight against the enemy’s attack? Take your fears to God and lay them at the foot of the cross. Ask Him to steady your feet, fill you with strength, and give you the courage to step out in faith—one small step at a time. God’s love for humankind is unwavering, and His grace is abundant for us.

Let’s Pray:

Dear God,

We are thankful for your love and provision. You hold us steady and fill us with strength. Shower us with the courage to let go of the fear and step out in faith—one small step at a time. We are in awe of you, the Father of all comfort and mercy. We love You, Lord.

Devotionals for the Heart: Being part of God's family is a game changer

Game Changers

“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.”

Have you ever been part of a team?

I’ve been a member of quite a few teams in my life. I’ve served on musical theater teams, dance teams and planning teams. I’ve been part of worship teams and Bible study teams. And, as long as I live, I’ll always be an active member of my family: Team Howard!

Most successful team leaders do the following:

● Select team members who have specific gifts, talents, and skills to offer the team.

● Inspire team members to work together in harmony to accomplish their goals.

● Encourage and support each other.

But here’s an important part necessary for every team to succeed: Every team needs a leader who is gifted in a specific area to support the team. Sports teams have coaches who’ve studied the game and know how to lead the team to victory. Music directors understand the nuances of the music and know just the right words to use in communicating with the orchestra in order to blend the instruments to create a pleasing sound.

God can do all of these things and more! He’s in the transformation business and has provided a firm foundation for creating successful teams. He’s the coach, manager, and Chief Executive Officer rolled into one. The best part is He doesn’t charge any fees for these services. Ponder that for a minute.

In my role as the K-12 STEM Specialist for our local school district, I was a team member in the Science Department. Each of us had an assignment, and my job was to work with community leaders and school principals to enrich student learning by combining science, technology, engineering and math as a cohesive, collaborative experience. It was a bit of a rocky start, but I quickly learned that relationships are the glue that holds the team together. Getting to know the principals and teachers was key to helping them achieve their desired outcomes. Seeing their success was the very best part of my job!

However, accomplishing profound change isn’t easy. We have to work hard at our craft and be dedicated to the goal. It takes courage to climb the professional ladder and get that promotion and perseverance to cross the finish line. Romans 12:2 ESV says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

We are members of God’s Family! Therefore, we have the privilege to proclaim His marvelous light and share it with the world. This is a game-changer.

Being a member of God’s family flips our agenda. Our relationship with God changes everything—how we see others, how we view the world, and how we approach the trials in our lives. For me it was coming to the conclusion that relationships unlock the power of team efforts. When we realize we live every moment of our lives in the presence of God, and know how much He loves us, this truly changes everything.

Let’s Pray: Gracious God, we are so thankful for the privilege of being on your team. You send the Holy Spirit to guide our steps and encourage us to work in harmony for your good and glory. You are the conductor of our lives. Blend our talents and gifts to reflect your light to the world. Praise be to God. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Why we need to know God on a personal level

Knowing God

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

—Joshua 1:9 (ESV)

The phrase “God is with us” is a familiar promise that is mentioned numerous times in God’s Word (The Holy Bible).

In Matthew 28:20 (ESV), God tells us, “I am with you always, to the end of the age.” He is unchanging and faithful, His love is never-ending, and His promises are true. This indicates that we’re in a state of togetherness with the Lord. "Withness" is a gift from God to those who follow Him. He goes before us, walks with us, and prepares a place for us at His table.

But how do we participate in the withness? God asks us to be doers of the word by sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ also known as “The Good News” according to the Bible. God instructs us to write His words on our hearts, pray with Him, and be witnesses for Jesus Christ who is our Lord and Savior. In 2 Peter 3:18 (ESV), God’s Word says, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” The good news is that our God doesn’t ask anything of us without first equipping us for the job He calls us to do. God gave us hearts to encourage each other, share our victories and defeats, and comfort others in need. God has given us the Holy Spirit, who guides our steps along the path He prepared beforehand (Ephesians 2:10). He designed us to be with Him and to know Him.

But what does it mean to know God? Many say they “know” God, but in truth, they only know “about” Him. There is a difference between knowing “about” God and “knowing” God. In order to “know” God you need to experience His goodness (Psalm 34:8), the comfort of His words (Psalm 34:18), and the overwhelming peace you feel in His presence (Romans 15:13).

Let’s break it down—most of us know about honey, but here’s a difference between knowing honey and knowing about honey. Those who know about it can list the facts. It’s a sweet liquid produced by bees from the nectar of flowers. It’s often used in cooking as a spread or sweetener. Almost anyone can recite these well-known facts about honey.

However, to know honey, you must experience it. Have you drizzled honey over a warm slice of freshly baked bread and licked the sticky, sweet substance from your fingers? Have you tasted the goodness of honey cake or the tangy delight of soy-honey-ginger sauce lightly covering your perfectly grilled salmon?

Many people claim to know God, but some only know about Him. When you “know” God, you share your struggles, doubts, and hopes with Him. You trust Him. His presence, power, and promises are the foundation of your life. Knowing the heart of God changes everything because He is “with” you.

Experiencing God presence is life-changing. Perhaps you’ve seen His fingerprints on your life when walking through a wilderness season. He is with us always, and His presence sustains us. Psalm 63:3 (NLT) tells us, His “unfailing love is better than life itself.”

God knocks at the door of your heart. But He’s not just knocking at your door, He’s knocking down your fears, secrets, loneliness, anger, bitterness, trauma, and sorrows. God holds the planets in orbit. He knows the name of every star. And He offers you a love like no other. It’s an invitation to the most incredible adventure you’ll ever encounter—withness.

If you haven’t experienced God, invite Him into every corner of your heart. The more you see Him, the more you seek Him. The more you seek Him, the more you know Him. And the more you know Him, the more you love Him!

Let's Pray: Dear God, we want to know You and not just know about you. Help us to be aware of your presence and experience your goodness. Let us stand in awe of your greatness and recall your faithfulness to us. Praise be to God! In the Name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

As she approached the end of that season, God placed a strong desire in Colleen’s heart to shine a light on God’s presence throughout ordinary days and encourage women in their faith-walk with Jesus Christ.

When asked what makes her faith walk real, Colleen replied, “It isn’t just one thing, but a million little things. Although some days bring trials and others bring joy, it’s never just another day.” She says when you give your heart to Jesus, each new day is another opportunity to walk hand-in-hand with Him and begin to know the heart of God. As you become more aware of His presence, stop, take a breath, and watch what God will do.

What’s in a Name?
A devotional by Colleen C. Howard

“The one who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows except the one who receives it.”—Revelation 2:17 (NASB)

When I was a little girl, I decided that I didn’t like the first name that my parents gave me.

My friends had popular names like Debby, Kathy, Cindy, and Susy, but mine differed. I wanted a better name, and with the infinite wisdom of a four-year-old girl, I selected the best name I knew. When my dad got home from work, I told my parents, “I want to be called Cinderella.”

They tried to reason with me, but eventually gave in. When they called me from another room, I heard the lyrical sounds of Cinderella, which was music to my ears until it wasn’t.

“Cinderella, it’s time to eat dinner.”

“It’s bath time, Cinderella.”

“What book would you like me to read tonight, Cinderella?”

This went on for about four or five days, after which I had enough of these new name shenanigans. I begged my parents to call me Colleen again. It didn’t matter that I would never find a hair clip, a bracelet, or a pencil with my name on it, which were the top reasons for the name change request. After a few minutes of convincing them that I wanted my name back, they agreed.

As an adult, I see the humor in this childhood anecdote and the wisdom of my parents, who knew this wouldn’t last. But it does make me wonder, why are we so attached to our given names? What’s in a name? Our name was most likely selected by our parents, and we may or may not know why it was chosen. It could be a family name, a name whose meaning is special to them, the name of a historical figure, or a favorite character from a book or a movie.

Sometimes our names are attached to our place in the family—Morgan is the youngest in our family. Other times, our names are attached to our talents or interests—Ethan is the musician in our family. Your name, interests, and character traits identify you, and who you are in comparison to those in your family. Whatever the reason our name was selected, it becomes the primary marker of our identity. When we hear our name, we respond. But what’s in a name?

As I got older, I realized additional descriptors are used to provide identity and become part of how we’re known. We’re funny, quiet, excitable, introverted, or extroverted. We are known for these traits. As adults, we’re often identified by professions or vocations: educator, construction worker, artist, accountant, engineer, health care provider, or salesperson.

We are each a sum of these labels, but there’s more. For those who know God, He calls us His sons and daughters. We are conquerors, servants, leaders, brothers, sisters, and more. He bestows on us these essential truths: We belong to Jesus Christ, and our job is to spread the Good News of the Gospel. This is what’s in a name when you follow Jesus Christ.

When we follow Jesus, we don’t just know who we are but also whose we are. We don’t just know what we do but why we do it. When you have a relationship with Christ, He calls you and equips you to reflect His promises and purpose for your life.

The Bible has multiple examples of names being changed. Some scholars believe the new names lead to better lives. Abram was changed to Abraham, Sarai to Sarah, Jacob to Israel, Simon became Peter, and Saul’s name was changed to Paul.

In the book of Revelation, John tells us that God will give those who are victorious a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it. This new name reflects a new season and the assurance of freedom from condemnation as we live with and worship the Lord for eternity.

Although I am grateful for my earthly name, I’m curious about my new name. However, I believe I can say with certainty—it will not be Cinderella. My earthly parents have passed away, but my Heavenly Father (God) is with me every minute, every moment today and forever. I am His, and He is mine. There is no need to wonder who I am.

Let’s Pray: Dear Lord, we are thankful for your faithfulness to us. Through prayer, help us to find our worth in You. Communication with You is essential to our existence. Open our hearts and hands to receive the gifts You want to give us. Equip us to spread the Good News of the Gospel. Thanks be to God! In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.
