Susan: Dear Lord Russell, what events lead up to the moment you first appear in our story?

Lord Russell (LR): I’d been living a carousing life in London, up to no good. Then, disaster—my brother was killed, and I inherited the family title. On my way home, I was waylaid, robbed, and left for dead.

Susan: Oh my! On a happier note, what was it like when you first laid eyes on our fair heroine?

LR: She’s had to fill me in on our first moments together, because I was in and out of consciousness, and mistook her for an angel.

Susan: How romantic! When did you realize that Miss Melissa Southwood was a flesh and blood woman?

LR: Hours later when the lovely lady was nursing my injuries in a country parsonage guest room—door ajar, of course. Still angelic, but her soft, gentle hands on my brow were very real.

Susan: Has knowing Melissa changed your life?

LR: Yes, but first, God changed me. After the accident, I reached a moral rock-bottom. He used that to make me receptive to the Gospel. When I finally won Melissa, my world became all the richer because of her love.

Susan: Did the course of your love story run smooth?

LR: Not at all. By the time I recovered, and realized I was in want of a wife, Melissa was but a pleasant memory. When I returned to London, however, she was brought to my attention by a scrap of gossip.

Susan: Were you able to court her there in London?

LR: Unfortunately, by the time I threw my hat in the ring, my darling was practically promised to another man.

Susan: How then did you manage to secure her love and devotion?

LR: Through God’s providence, I was in the right place to assist Melissa at a crucial moment. My Aunt Lucy also aided my pursuit of true love. Melissa and I were meant to be.

Carrie: Ben, what got you interested in journalism as a career?

Ben: Growing up in Deutschland, in Germany, and then moving on to Chicago, I was interested in truth—in the truth being told.

Carrie: That’s interesting because you’re not exactly being honest with Maude, are you?

Ben: Nein, I wish I could tell her the whole truth. But, trust me, I will when my undercover assignment is over.

Carrie: What has been surprising to you about Mackinac Island?

Ben: The beauty of this place has amazed me. And the Friedlichkeit – the peacefulness.

Carrie: You’re a journalist, but anyone who has heard you play piano has described you as a virtuoso. Do you care to comment on this?

Ben: Nein. No comment. Music has caused much harm in my family. It is not my profession. Nein.

Carrie: Hmm, I don’t think I asked if music was your profession, but since you don’t care to discuss your talent, let’s move on. What did you think when you first met Maude Welling?

Ben: Ja, let’s talk about her. When I met Miss Welling, I thought she’d been hurt badly. And when I saw who she was with, I understood. I wanted to protect her. I still do.

Carrie: Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Ben: (Ben laughs.) Who can say? I want to be editor of the paper, but something tells me I’d have to give up much to hold that title. I turn to God and trust Him in His plans for me.

Carrie: You’re investigating a story about young men posing as coming from wealth and influence. But some are saying you, yourself, are pursuing an heiress. Is there any truth in this?

Ben: Who would say such a thing? Is it one of the journalists coming to the island for Mark Twain’s speech? It must be one of my competitors.

Interview with Chad, hero of An Unexpected Legacy by Amy Anguish:

Amy: Chad, I know you and Jessica both came from Arkansas. What brought you to Texas?

Chad: I could say it was God. That He knew Jessica’s friend would convince her to move down this way and that I needed to be here to meet her. Ha! But really, I completed my veterinarian schooling down here. When the vet I had been interning with decided he was ready to retire, I bought/inherited his practice and stayed.

Amy: What attracted you to Jessica in the first place?

Chad: I noticed her right away at the Smoothie shop. She was the only one sitting there alone. And she just kept shooting these grumpy looks our way. I wanted to know what she’d look like with a smile, so I went over to see if I could make it happen. And boy, was her smile great!

Amy: I know you have a cat, but as a veterinarian, which do you prefer? Dogs or cats?

Chad: I obviously love both. But for my lifestyle, where I’m not always home much, cats are much easier. They don’t require as much work … or as much yard … as dogs. And it’s so nice to have one curled up in your lap purring away.

Amy: Jessica teases you in the story about how you like to get things like wheat germ in your smoothies. Do you tend to be a healthy eater?

Chad: Ha! Honestly, I get things like that in my smoothies because the fruit hides the taste and I can actually get it down. Most of the time, I eat just like anyone else. Pizza and microwave dinners are unfortunately a typical weeknight meal at my place. I do cook a little, but by the time I get home, the easier and faster the meal, the better.

Amy: You and Jessica go through several ups and downs during the course of your story. What made you keep coming back for more?

Chad: She’s worth it. She’s cute and funny and fits just perfectly under my chin. And I love hanging out with her. No one else has ever … well, has ever been so right for me. I knew we had a chance at something great and I wanted to see it play out.

Amy: What’s your idea of a perfect date?

Chad: Anything with her. The first time I took her out, we played miniature golf. But it doesn’t seem to matter what we’re doing, as long as we’re together. I don’t think either of us is really a fancy kind of person, but just typical stuff like movies or dinner or bowling or whatever. Although I’m not so sure about her suggestion that we go ice-skating. My legs aren’t really designed for that kind of thing. Ha!

Amy: In your opinion, what do you have to have for a perfect relationship?

Chad: Perfect? I’m not sure there is such a thing as a perfect relationship. Everyone has ups and downs. Everyone has that one family member that makes life … not as much fun. But, we’re learning that if you keep God at the center, take your problems to Him, that helps more than anything. And just the desire to stick with it. Not give up at the first sign of trouble.

Interview with "Mac" from The Broken Trail by Christa MacDonald:

Christa: What’s your favorite color?

Mac: (frowns)

Christa: If we poked through your closet what color would we see the most of? 

Mac: Blue, the color of my uniforms. 

Christa: So you’re a police officer. Do you like your job?

Mac: Law enforcement is my calling. It’s how I serve God. There are good days and bad, same as any job.

Christa: Is faith something important to you?

Mac: It’s the cornerstone of my life. There was a time my ambition was my god and the consequences of that were devastating. It’s not a mistake I ever want to make again. In every decision, every relationship, I try to live in God’s will.

Christa: Have you ever been in love?

Mac: (scowls)

Christa: Okay, maybe we’ll skip that.

Me: What is your favorite place and why?

Mac: Martin’s Meadow. It’s on a trail that runs through my property. My horses like it in any season, but in summer it’s really something. These blue flowers grow and it looks a little like the ocean at a distance. 

Christa: You’ve lived in NYC, do you miss city life?

Mac: There’s a kind of energy in a city as large as New York, there are times I miss that. Being able to get a decent meal at any hour, I miss that too, but up here a man can find peace.

Christa: Is peace what you want most in life?

Mac: At this point in my life I want to be content with what I have and open to what God might give me. There’s peace in that for certain.

Bonnie: Hi, Lance. What on earth made you enter a cooking contest? Especially, with a meatloaf recipe?

Lance: I love to cook as a diversion from my job. It’s so relaxing.

Bonnie: But, why meatloaf? And, why a contest?

Lance: Meatloaf is fun, and it’s hard to mess up. You don’t really have to measure much. You can toss in spices by the handful, a cup of onion or a half cup, a bit of this or that sauce, even a package of dry taco sauce mix. Oops! I think I just gave away my best secret.

Bonnie: Mmm. Sounds good. I’ll have to try that. You still didn’t answer why you entered it in a contest.

Lance: Partly because I love competition, and I love to cook. But, mostly, to honor my Aunt Harriett who pressured me so much that she practically filled out the form and mailed it in. I was flummoxed, and she’s such a dear I didn’t want to disappoint her. I never thought I’d make it to the national finals in California.

Bonnie: What is your real job? I know you love competition, so is it in sports?

Lance: That is a secret. Yes, it’s in sports, but a very special peripheral role in sports.

Bonnie: Well, you couldn’t be a basketball player. You’re not very tall.

Lance: Naw. Not movie star handsome either. Notice my hairline?

Bonnie: I do. It’s prominently receding. Does that embarrass you in your ‘special role'?

Lance: Actually, I think it’s a benefit. Being competent in what I do, and not being drop dead gorgeous, makes my clients trust me.

Bonnie: Clients? Are you a promoter for sports figures?

Lance: Can’t say. But, I do think it also helped Kate to trust me, until . . .

Bonnie: Until what?

Lance: Until I almost lost her by deceiving her. I thought I was giving her a wonderful surprise. Guess not. Thank goodness Sandy (her dog) saved the day!

Interview with Chad from Time and Tide (book) by Kristen Terrette:

Kristen: Tell me about your childhood.

Chad: I grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. My dad traveled all the time, growing his real estate business, so it was just my mom and me most of the time. I played a lot of sports when I was young but focused on basketball in high school. After I graduated, I went to Washington University in downtown Atlanta, but that was there most of my problems started. 

Kristen: What kind of problems?

Chad: My parents had moved to Savannah when I started college, so even though I lived forty minutes away from my childhood home, I couldn’t actually go home anymore. Then, my dad passed away suddenly my sophomore year, and… after a bunch of therapy… I’ve realized that event sent me into a spiral. I wasn’t given the chance to reconcile our relationship (me and my dad) so I turned to drugs to cope.

Kristen: That’s hard to hear. But you’re doing good now. What changed?

Chad: A ton of things. But my road to redemption truly began when I drove from the swanky Atlanta home I’d bought after my dad died, to a party. I was very out of it on drugs and didn’t make it to the shindig. I caused a car accident that almost killed another driver, as well as myself. I should have died and suffered a major leg injury, which placed me in the hospital for a while. That hospital stay helped to kick-start my sobriety. It was a reality check.

Kristen: I bet. Well, how’d you end up on Moanna Island?

Chad: I mentioned my mom moved to Savannah, and my family’s business main hub is based out of there now. So after my rehab, and physical therapy, I decided I needed to be closer to her, and realized I’d never be ready to take over the business unless I knew all the ins and outs. We have a family home on Moanna, which is only forty-five minutes away. I decided to move there and adjust to the area for a few weeks, maybe even a few months, then start my new job at our Savannah office. I’m very glad I did.

Kristen: And why’s that?

Chad: Because God was chasing after me and planned on using a beautiful woman to show me what love is, and through her love, show me who He is.

Kristen: Tell me about this!

Chad: I met my wife, Ryan, on the island. It wasn’t the first time I’d laid eyes on her, but that part of the story is for another time. But our first interaction was at the Moanna General Store, where she worked. I was buying dog food for a stray I’d come across, and though I was immediately struck by how hot…I mean beautiful…she was, I made a terrible first impression. But she was gracious after a bit of prodding and let me make up for my fumble. 

God continued to place us in each other’s path, and she ended up showing me around the island on what she called adventures. I watched Ryan have joy through the chaos of life. I wanted to know how she was able to do it. She’s dealt with some tragedies in her past, but unlike me, she turned to God to get her through them. That was her secret, what made her, her. First, I fell in love with Ryan, but my love for Jesus soon followed. He used her to help me find Him.

Kristen: Wow. So tell us about your newlywed life. How has it changed?

Chad: My life is very different from what it was a few years ago. Ryan and I married and decided to make Moanna our home forever. It’s our place, and we couldn’t stand the thought of leaving it. I help my mom run our real estate firm which has me traveling some. Ryan doesn’t seem to mind because she keeps busy too. She still takes shifts at the General Store and is back in school online to finish her degree, a dream she had to give up when her brother got sick. But I think the craziest thing to rock my world is the fact I help run a Wednesday night worship service at the Savannah Mental Health and Rehabilitation Center. I help recovering addicts, like me, learn about Jesus and His great love for us.

Author Bio: Kristen has a Master's degree in Theological Studies and was on staff as a Children's Ministry Director for over five years. She cherishes her Southern roots and currently lives forty-five minutes outside of Atlanta, GA. With the support of her husband and two children, she stays at home writing Christian fiction, making up fantasy places and characters, allowing God to take the story where He needs it to go.

After almost killing himself and someone else, Chad’s legal problems, addiction recovery therapy, and physical therapy if he ever wants to walk normally again, are a part of his everyday life. Interview with Caleb, hero of Laura Hilton's book Love by the Numbers:

Laura: Caleb, glad to have you stop by. You are working as an accountant for Judy’s Gift Shop. Can you tell me about it? Is this your normal job?

Caleb: No, it’s not. Judith is my mother’s best friend. She’s Mennonite and going on a mission trip and needed someone to balance the books since the woman she hired to manage the shop in her absence doesn’t do math. It gives her a headache. Can you imagine? But all I have to do is balance the books and make deposits and pay the bills while Judith is gone. Nothing too strenuous.

Laura: What is your real job? 

Caleb: I’m Amish. I work on a farm and help my dad with the chores. That is my real job. But we have a cuckoo clock business on the side, dad calls it a hobby, but it brings in more money than the farm. But we enjoy designing them and decorating them. Judith sells them in her gift shop. 

Laura: How would people describe you? 

Caleb: Shrug. Boring, stick in the mud, vanilla ice cream eating, math whiz… should we make it nerd? 

Laura: Can you tell us about your family? 

Caleb: My dad is a preacher, and I have five sisters. No brothers. One sister is married. The others are younger than me. We live in a big farmhouse with a wrap-around porch, a swing, and surrounded by Mom’s flower gardens. We also have a big garden. 

Laura: Are you involved in a relationship with a girl? 

Caleb: No, but I am thinking about what kind of woman I’d like to date. Someone sensible, practical, and a hard worker, who is safe. I need someone safe because there’s this other girl… (shakes head) Her name’s Lydia…

Laura: Tell us about Lydia. 

Caleb: I met her at a wedding of a mutual friend. She’s beautiful, twinkling and seems to have glitter floating around her. Totally unsuitable. Not at all practical. She’s...exciting. Tempting. And well…She’s allergic to math. Which is why I’m doing the accounting. She’s Judy’s niece, which is why she’s the manager while Judy is gone. I need to stay far away from her. But…I can’t. Because Mom and Judy have devised this plan to make me be near her…With the bookkeeping and introducing her to people in the community. You know. 

Laura: What is your biggest fear? 

Caleb: Laughs. Well, Lydia. Sparkle. Glitter. Happy girls. They are trouble. Make that T.R.O.U.B.L.E. But wow, what I wouldn’t give to go out with her just once.
