Overcoming the Past

“From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”—2 Corinthians 5:16-17 (ESV)

The past can sometimes contain lingering reminders of our mistakes and failures. Perhaps things done in sin that led to regret, or accidents brought on by missteps or miscalculations. God doesn’t want us to live in the past, nor be taunted by the enemy (Satan) from anything in it.

When we receive the gift of salvation provided by Jesus Christ (John 3:16) and accept Him as our Savior, His love transforms us­. He makes us a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). But, because of our worldly flesh, it is often difficult to forget or let go of the past no matter how hard we try. This might also include family and friends in our lives who also have difficulty forgiving our “past selves” or letting go of the past.

In our weakness of flesh, Satan will try to use the sins of our past against us. He tests our strength in Christ by poking at our weaknesses, often by using someone we love or care about to do it. Not long ago a friend of mine, Joe, came to me for prayer because of present day negative and chastising comments he received from family members regarding his past mistakes before Christ changed his life. Through a lot of work and dedication, Joe was healed from his past. Today, he is a very different person. For him the “old passed away”, but not for some of his family members. It was difficult for Joe to experience such an attack, which caused him pain and feelings of anger and resentment.

I reminded Joe that, while the negative comments were hard to take, they were not the truth. The truth is he belongs to Christ, so he is a new creation. He is a son of God! He is loved and covered by God. I prayed with him and told him to keep praying until he felt at peace. Only the power of prayer can overcome what we cannot do ourselves in our fleshly weakness. We cannot overcome the devil or anything else without calling on God, who is our defender in the faith. He will come to our aid and rescue every time.

Next, I encouraged Joe to forgive those who wounded him. What they did was in their own flesh and, as we are one with Christ, we must not regard it (2 Corinthians 5:16). Matthew 6:14 (ESV) also says, “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” Forgiveness in Christ has the power to not only set us free, but also those who hurt us. We may not be able to change their fleshly actions or response, but we can rest assured that God takes control of any situation we put back in His hands through forgiveness.

Finally, I encouraged Joe to resist Satan, to pray in the Spirit (Ephesians 6:18), and tell the enemy to take his lies back to the pit where he belongs. We must know who our enemy is! Joe wasn’t fighting his family members, he was fitting against Satan, who wants to destroy him with lies about his past. When we resist the devil, he must flee from us (James 4:7)!

So, if you’re struggling with things from your past, take heart and do not be discouraged! God is with you (1 Chronicles 28:20)! You can be still and know that the Lord will fight for you (Exodus 14:14). His great love can and will sustain you. He will bring you through the storm to the other side because He is in you and “behold, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Let’s Pray: Dear Lord, though I struggle against flesh and blood, I know you fight my battles. You will overcome my flesh because in you I am a new creation. Thank You for overcoming my current circumstances and setting me free from anything the enemy tries to use against me. I am not my past, and any mistakes in it no longer have a hold on me. In you there is always victory over my enemies! In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Under Construction

“And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose.” – Romans 8:28 AMP

Over the past few years, things may not have turned out quite as you’ve expected.

It may have seemed like wherever you turned all you saw was chaos and debris. What used to be “normal” was no longer normal, and life as you’ve once known it was a fading memory. It may have looked like everything around you—everything in your life—was being destroyed or taken away from you. Although a lot has transpired, and these past few years may have looked like destruction, for many it was actually construction happening!

You may have seemingly seen your future lying haphazardly in a heap of carnage amongst unfulfilled dreams, delayed promises, and misguided expectations and thought all your dreams and aspirations were destroyed. When you thought you should have been advancing, you may have experienced major setbacks.

You may have felt like you were losing everything, or you may have lost everything at some point. However, there’s nothing lost that God won’t replenish, in abundance. It may have felt like everything you held dear was being destroyed. Though you may have been struck down, you were not destroyed. Destruction is damaging something beyond repair, but construction is building. Even after destruction, something new can be built. Even loss is a part of the plan. God always has a plan of redemption.

Although the effect of deconstruction and construction may look similar, their results are not the same. Destruction is tearing down, whereas, construction is building up. Your life may look like a battlefield right now, but know that God still has a plan. In some instances, some things have to be destructed so that other things can be constructed. Old mindsets, habits, dependencies, tainted relationships, and toxic environments had to be destroyed so that the plan God has for you can come together.

Everything isn’t always the devil, and even when it is it can be worked for good. If you’re having a hard time right now, press into God’s Holy Spirit more. It may not be for your demise, but for your good. You very well may be under construction right now. Things may look in disarray, but from the ashes of the debris something beautiful will be constructed. You can stand in confidence knowing that because you’re deeply loved by God, He won’t let you fail.

His plan for your life will prevail!

Let’s Pray: Heavenly Father, I thank You for knowing my end from the beginning. You knew every detail, intricacy, and detour of my life before the foundations of the world were formed. Help me to trust Your plan through the seasons when things seem unclear. Give me faith to endure until everything works out. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Why Jesus Christ lived, died and rose again!

The Joy Set Before Him

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” 

–Hebrews 12:1-2 (NIV)

For the joy set before him he (Jesus Christ) endured the cross.

I’ve read this verse probably hundreds of times with my focus usually landing on the advice to fix my eyes on Jesus Christ. If I keep my “vertical vision” (as I like to call it), I could potentially walk on water or at least maintain a fairly consistent walk with Jesus. These words stood out to me on my most recent read through the verse. I was stunned as their significance settled in my spirit. At the time of Christ’s greatest struggle, His focus was on the joy set before Him. His focus was on the mission. His focus was on us. But to get to the joy set before Him, He had to be willing to drink the cup of suffering.

For the joy set before Him, Jesus endured brutal beatings and relentless ridicule. He experienced desertion and denial from His closest friends. He suffered rejection and injustice at the hands of those He came to save. Jesus accepted being spat upon and nailed to a tree. He took on the cross and all of the scorn and shame that came with it. We read in the Gospels (books of the Bible) that as they were accusing Him, Jesus stood silent before them and allowed them to hurl their insults and accusations without rebuttal. At any moment He could have called on a legion of angels to rescue Him, but He had a different rescue on His mind—ours.

There was a joy that was constantly before Him, and that joy was us.

It was this joy that strengthened Jesus and drove Him to achieve His Father’s purpose. He saw the end goal. He saw the possibilities. He kept His eyes on the prize and the prize was us. He did it all just to have a shot at spending eternity with us, hoping we would see his sacrifice and accept his incredible offer of salvation. Jesus envisioned multitudes ransomed and redeemed. He didn’t just count the hairs on our head; Jesus counted the cost for our redemption, and He concluded we were worth it. He determined the price He would have to pay was overshadowed by the purpose He came to fulfill. While we are called to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, when He was on the cross, His focus was on us.

In the words of a popular movie, Jesus knew his mission and He chose to accept it. His mission was, and always has been, restoring relationship with His people. When Jesus surrendered His will to God while in the Garden of Gethsemane where he prayed fervently to God as he agonized over the intensity of how his life would end, He saw beyond the crucifixion to the coming resurrection. With the weight of the world literally on His shoulders, Jesus conquered death and the penalty of our sin on the cross. His death would strip every principality of its power and authority, publicly shaming them while securing our freedom (Colossians 2:15). 

What was relinquished in the Garden of Eden was redeemed at The Cross. Christ’s victory on The Cross proved that wounded heels can still crush serpents and He is, and always will be, seated on His throne.

Christ’s suffering and love sacrifice secured our salvation and so much more. We have been adopted as sons and daughters of the Most High. The veil was torn from top to bottom, offering us direct access to our Heavenly Father. His sacrifice allows us to approach His throne with confidence (Hebrews 4:16), receiving an endless reservoir of grace and mercy. Our prayers can be offered with the assurance that He hears us and will answer us (1 John 5:14-15). We can walk in authority over all the power of the enemy (Luke 10:19). Our names have been registered in Heaven and He is holding our reservation.

Friends, we were purchased at a high price for a holy purpose. Jesus chose the unimaginable and endured the unthinkable, so we could have the unbelievable. For the joy set before Him, Jesus endured, so we could enjoy eternity in His presence, where we will find fullness of joy!

Let’s Pray:
Sweet Savior, thank you so much for choosing to go through with your rescue mission, allowing us to have restored relationship with you and experience your redeeming grace. It's humbling to be reminded of all you endured just so we could have a chance to choose whether or not we wanted to accept your astounding offer of salvation. Knowing many would reject your incredible gift and all of us would fall short of your Holy standard repeatedly, You still thought we were worth the cost. Help us to never lose appreciation for Your sacrifice or gratitude for the lengths you were willing to go to rescue us. May we commit to sharing your story with others so they can come to know You and experience your unconditional love, endless grace and redeeming mercy. May we always savor the sweetness of Your salvation, experience peace in Your presence, and find joy in our journey with You! In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.
