Devotionals for the Heart: When you're wondering if you can trust God

Can You Fully Trust God?

A devotional by Patricia Russell

This is what the Lord says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord. That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.”—Jeremiah 17:5-7 (NIV)

“Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus” is one of my favorite songs. It’s a classic.

The melody is easy. The words are simple to understand. There is one line that has become my constant prayer because I know my trust in Him will be tested often. My prayer is, “Lord, give me grace to trust You more.”

In high school, I had a teacher who taught us that trust is earned. That lesson has stayed with me over the years, particularly when people would say, often without prompting, “You can trust me.” Yet, they have only known me for five minutes.

How do you develop trust? Trust is developed in relationships when people have shared a variety of experiences together. When we first met at a youth rally, my husband did something very interesting. We had a brief conversation, but afterwards he spent the next couple of days doing research on me. He wanted to know who I was, so he did what anyone does when they’re interested in a subject: they research. This, I found very admirable. It meant that he was serious in wanting to truly know me to establish a solid relationship. Do you know that God knows us intimately right down to the very number of hairs on our head (Luke 12:7).

According to Psalm 139:1-4, God tells us how important we are to Him and how much He loves us. He knows what we think, when we sit down, and how we move. When my husband tells me he loves me, it means a lot to me. When God tells us He loves us and shows us in His Word (The Holy Bible) how very important we are to Him, He wants us to know this so that we know we can trust Him. If God were to ask us to use a measure of 1 to 10—with 10 being the highest—to rate our trust in Him, how would we rate our level of trust and confidence in Him?

As we read the Scriptures, study them, and learn about who the Lord is, and see His character revealed throughout the historical records, our love for Him grows. Our confidence in Him grows. Our trust in Him should also grow. Our confidence in a God who never changes—He is the same yesterday, today, and forever—can be grounded in certainty.

Reading about Him and communicating with Him in prayer is one thing, but the greater test comes from obeying His commands. God knows what He is asking us to do, even though it may seem difficult for us. He wants us to believe He is in control. He wants us to obey Him and trust that He will work things together for our good as His Word declares in Romans 8:28. When I think about someone who was obedient to God even though it was dangerous, was Corrie Ten Boom. I highly recommend you read her book, The Hiding Place.

Corrie Ten Boom and her family rescued and hid hundreds of Jews from the Nazis. Someone betrayed her family, causing them to be arrested and taken to a concentration camp to be punished. They endured excruciating pain, heartache, stress, and torture by their enemies. Yet, because she learned from a very young age to put her faith in the One who sees, hears, and knows all things, she was set up to face this tumultuous period in her life.

Corrie felt pain in her mind, in her body, and in her soul, but after enduring, she had this to say about her God: “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” Although she suffered and was severely persecuted, Corrie did not backtrack on her love, commitment, and faith in her God. Her love was strengthened and her commitment grounded deeper.

Many times, it is through our suffering that our trust becomes deeper and our love for the Lord grows stronger. If you’re in a struggle right now, consider journaling the things God is teaching you as you sit in the pain. Yes, the struggle is real, but God’s love is also. Be encouraged!

Let’s Pray:

Heavenly Father, today I trust You with my life. I do not know what the future holds, but I know that You hold the future. I’ve heard and seen You do wonderful things for others, so I trust You with my future. I trust You, Lord. Please give me grace to trust You more, especially when my mind and my heart are overwhelmed. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: How being grateful can help heal you and others

Gratitude Brings Healing

A devotional by Patricia Russell

“O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.”
—Psalm 107:1 (KJV)

One of my favorite pastimes is doing something that requires great subtlety.

It’s something that I think we should all do but see it as a personal development exercise. It’s called people watching. You don’t need to be trained on how to do it but if you tend to stare with a frown on your face, you’re doing it wrong. You have to be subtle. One of my favorite places to watch people is in the grocery store.

I watch the way customers interact with the cashier while checking out. Here is where you see all kinds of personalities and behaviors. My blood starts to boil when customers start yelling or speaking harshly to the associates who are checking out the groceries. A different price comes up and the shouting begins. I’ve tried to stand in the shoes of that associate who may have struggled to get out of bed that morning, get their children off to school, deal with a sick family member and still make it to work on time. Saying “thank you” to the associate for the dispensing of change, the bagging of groceries, the diligence and even just for smiling, can make things better for the person on the other side of the cash register.

Gratitude is becoming an age-old activity that I feel compelled to impart to people every day of my life. From writing an honest but encouraging review to carefully choosing my words as I write an email or seeing the Amazon delivery driver bringing the package to the door rather than just throwing it at the step (he or she didn’t have to do that) . . . all of this gives me gratitude.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, “gratitude” is “a strong feeling of appreciation to someone or something for what the person has done to help you.” There is so much we can complain about and yet there is so much goodness God has showered on us that I often sense the scales are not balanced between our gratitude and complaints.

Think about Jesus Christ’s interaction with the 10 lepers (Luke 17:11-19). They were sent on their way to go and show themselves to the priests. Jesus did not require the lepers to return to Him and express gratitude for their healing. Yet I believe something arose in the heart of the one leper who was so grateful that he felt compelled to return and give Jesus thanks because he knew deep down it was Jesus who healed his body.

This was huge because he not only got physical healing, but Jesus gave them hope for a new and better life. All of them knew what it was to live in isolation from the community because of their illness. This would have affected every area of their life—from relationships to earning an income and purchasing food—yet most of these people forgot so quickly after being healed to turn back and give thanks to Jesus. The Scriptures state, “and he was a Samaritan” (Luke 17:16 KJV).

Culturally, Samaritans were looked down upon by Jews. They were a scorned people group. Yet, Jesus looked beyond their nationality and saw their need. He exemplified love in action. The Samaritan leper knew this, which increased his gratitude.

Perhaps we in our modern day should ask ourselves, “How are we expressing gratitude and thanks, both to God and to people?” There are opportunities where we can show this that are often overlooked. Here are a few suggestions: We could express gratitude for the mailperson who neatly puts your mail in the box. We could appreciate the gas attendant at the gas station or the cashier to whom we pay for our gas. We could show appreciation for the associate at the store. We could thank the custodian or cleaning person sweeping the store, school or community center. And we could be kind to the cleaning lady in the hotel where we stay.

We don’t know what many of these individuals have to go through to just show up at their post daily. Many times, people look past them. Even the person pushing the shopping carts back to the grocery store can be overlooked. We might say “that’s their job” and I understand. However, “their job” is the reason I can have access to a clean room, store, and checkout line. Saying “thank you” with a smile goes a long way. A simple expression of gratitude can empower them to keep going.

Remember: We can begin our day with gratitude first not to people but to the Lord when we open our eyes in the morning. A great day begins with a grateful heart.

Let’s Pray:

Dear Lord, we are so thankful for waking us up this morning. You have protected us and kept us safe. Lord, we are so grateful. Thank You for allowing us to see a new day. Help us to stay alert to opportunities to express gratitude to everyone who we encounter. May our hearts always be grateful for big and small things.

In Jesus’s Name, I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Jesus Christ taught His disciples about prayer

Principles of Prayer

A devotional by Patricia Russell

“One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up.”—Luke 18:1 (NLT)

Many years ago, a woman in our church made a statement that has stayed with me. She said, “Much prayer, much power. Little prayer, little power.” Prayer is like gasoline in a car. For the car to move forward, it needs fuel. Likewise, we need prayer to fuel our lives every day.

First, prayer is communication between us and God.
The disciples of Jesus Christ had seen Jesus pull away from them on several occasions to go and pray. They saw that His ability to do all He did and function the way He did was clearly because He received his power from His Father (God). They heard Jesus talk repeatedly about His Father. They heard and could see there was a connection between Him and God. Keep in mind that communication involves speaking as well as listening. Jesus was willing to teach them how to do this. He did so and taught them what we know as the Lord’s prayer (Luke 11:2-4).

Jesus taught His disciples to pray to their Heavenly Father by first acknowledging the most important things: Praise God and honor His holy name then ask Him to provide for your daily need. Daily repent of sin asking God to forgive you and pray to stay alert to temptation. This was a basic framework on how to pray. This doesn’t seem complicated, does it? So why don’t we pray?

Secondly, prayer requires persistence. Prayer requires hope that what we are praying for will happen. We must not give up. The Bible tells us that we must believe that God can do what we are asking. It is a requirement to believe that He is who He says He is (Hebrews 11:6). Belief in Him comes from reading His Word (The Holy Bible) and praying. Like any great relationship, you have to be consistent and persistent. Jesus taught His disciples persistence in a parable about a friend going to another’s friend seeking assistance because an unexpected visitor has come to visit. His friend tells him to come back tomorrow. But he keeps knocking on the friend’s door until the friend finally gives in, not because of the relationship but because of the persistent knocking on the door. How can you ignore a persistent cry for help? The lesson is don’t stop asking, be persistent in prayer (Luke 11:5-9).

Thirdly, prayer requires persistent faith.
As mentioned, when we pray to the Lord we come to Him believing He is God and He is able to do what we ask. Jesus said in Luke 18:1 (KJV), “Men ought always to pray.” The passage goes on to share an illustration of widow who refused to give up on getting the justice she needed. She needed an answer. So, she went to the only one she knew who had the power to change her situation. She was completely focused on going to the judge who was the only one who can respond to her need. Jesus wants us to do the same for us. Go to the One (God) who can do something about your situation. The widow was unrelenting, focused and determined. Her story is a prime example of the fact that seeing and receiving the answers to our prayers requires persistent faith.

How is your communication with the Lord? Do you only speak to Him when you need something from Him or is He the first person you speak to in the morning, during the day and before you to go sleep at night? We put time and energy into our earthly relationships. Is the Lord the center of your life so that He is not an afterthought but a priority in your life? We can be so busy doing the Lord’s work that we forget about the Lord of the work and spend time communing with Him to ensure we are really living and doing what He wants.

Let’s endeavor to grow in our relationship with the Lord. If you’ve struggled in the past, know that He is ready and waiting to hear your cry and answer your prayers of faith. God can send you all the help you need.

Let’s Pray:

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for always wanting to keep an open line of communication between us through the gift of prayer. Thank You for always listening to my prayers. Forgive me for looking to others before coming to You first. Thank You for reminding me to never give up and to always pray. Help me to trust You with all my heart and not lean to my own understanding. In Jesus’s Name, I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: What plants taught me about being deeply rooted

How Deep Are Our Roots?

A devotional by Patricia Russell

“Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” —Colossians 2:7 (NLT)

Whack! Whack! Whack!

This was the sound of the instruments we used to dig up plants. The plants had deep roots and every time we hit the ground with the hoe, we pulled up through the dirt an incredible number of weeds. These weeds ran deep. I had never seen so many attached to one plant.

Our voices echoed each other with deep sighs of, “Oh my goodness. There are more here. Come back, there’s another one!” More than once, we had to return to the same place to chip away at the long stalks of weeds that had wound themselves tightly in the earth. We swung at them, then pulled and put the instrument deeper to dig down to finally see an end to the annoying strands of weeds.

The aspect of being rooted really came alive to me in a new way that day. I felt like I had a practical window into why Jesus Christ spoke often about soil, plants and farming when communicating to the people in The Holy Bible. The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the Colossian church and in it, he told them to let their roots not only grow but also go deep and be anchored and strong in Christ. What roots was he referring to? Paul was speaking to their faith and confidence in Christ.

He wanted them to ensure that their conviction of who Christ is be so strong and solid that nothing could shake their belief. When you know something is true it will take a lot to shake you out from that belief because you’re deeply rooted. When you read the scripture, meditate on it and understand it in context it is planted in your spirit. However, when that Word is tested by the firestorm of a trial or storm in life, then the depth and security of that root is also tested.

As a child, I developed a love for memorizing scripture even when I didn’t fully understand what those Bible verses meant. As I became a teenager, I would read those passages again and they took on a new meaning to me. Many times, I would be experiencing something in my life and a verse that I had memorized would give me a better understanding and comfort for what I was experiencing in that moment. The Word of God was taking root in my heart.

As an adult, I still face challenges that are common in this life on Earth but because the truth of God’s Word had taken root in my spirit, I am always encouraged and comforted by The Holy Spirit. The Bible stories and verses always give me hope. When I read The Bible, God reminds me that He is with me, so I am never alone.

Day by day, as I spend time with God in Bible study and prayer, I continue to grow stronger. As a result, my heart overflows with gratitude to God. I was thankful for His Word. I can tell you with full confidence today that just like a plant being placed in good soil—watered and nurtured—we each have to do the work to ensure we are grounded in our relationship with Jesus Christ. When the Word of God is rooted deep within us then there is nothing that can uproot us.

The storms will come. The trouble will come. The disappointments will come. Yet, because we have taken the time and care to plant our faith in God’s Word, growing our spiritual roots deep in our Firm Foundation (Jesus Christ) then our faith and trust in God will remain secure and unmovable.

Let’s Pray:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the promises in your Word that give us hope and confidence. As you told us in Your Word to meditate on your truths day and night, I will meditate on them so I can become strong in You. Thank You for every blessing I receive from hiding your Word in my heart to not only keep me from sinning but also to guide my every step through this life on Earth. I love you, Lord. Thank You for being here for me and all of humankind.

In Jesus’s name I pray, Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Why we should take time to spend with God

Don’t Lose the Wonder of Spending Time with God
A devotional by Patricia Russell

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”—Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

I have watched, on several occasions, a bee buzzing from flower to flower looking for food. The proper word is for this action is “foraging”.

Apparently, as they are doing this, sticky hairs from the flowers get on them, and they transfer that to other flowers. By doing this, they are fertilizing other flowers, enabling plant production. This is the beauty and the marvelous wonder of God's creation. Watching these bees and their activity causes me to be still and to marvel at what I see. It’s very peaceful and relaxing. Yet it’s something that we often miss out on when we don’t slow down and take time to ponder and admire how God created nature and causes His creations to work together.

Just like it's important to take time out to “smell the roses”, as we would say, God longs for us to take time to be still in His presence. For many of us, we are rushing to meet daily deadlines and catch up with the latest newsworthy story, while feeling pressure to express our opinion at every turn on social media. Yet I believe God is calling us with greater intensity to slow down and enjoy His presence. There’s a Bible story about this when Jesus Christ visited Mary and Martha. We can read about this in Luke 10:38-42.

Martha was very annoyed at the fact that her sister was sitting at the feet of Jesus and simply listening to Him. Sometimes I think there was envy in Martha's heart. I think she may have wanted to forget about preparing the food for her guest and simply sit down then see if anyone noticed. These sisters were both wired very differently but Mary was more consumed with the words, with the atmosphere and with the enrichment she was receiving at the Master's feet. Yes, we all have responsibilities. However, I know that we too can take the time to lay aside the preparation of food and delay some things that may seem necessary for the benefit of enjoying the presence of the Most High God. How can we do this?

We do this through fasting and giving our bodies rest. Our bodies work very hard. Maybe we work our bodies too hard. Yet when we can stop, sit, read and drink in from the life-giving source of the Word of God (The Holy Bible), close our eyes and meditate on what He says to our spirit then we will experience a fullness in our spirit that cannot be compared with anything else. The best food prepared for our bodies to consume can’t be compared with the satisfying nourishment of God’s Word because it nourishes our spirit.

When we give our bodies a break from food it has a twofold purpose: It allows us to stop and dive into the food of the Word of God which heals our minds and refreshes our spirit. Secondly, we allow our physical bodies to rest and to heal.

There as been a growing interest in North America on the power of fasting from a physical perspective and some who do not talk about Christ are even understanding to some degree that there is a spiritual benefit. So, let’s be like Mary in the Bible. Maybe for half a day or even a day, let’s block our calendar and commit the time that would be used to prepare food or go out and eat, to walk out in nature and converse with our Creator who longs to speak with us.

God wants to share His heart with us, build us up and draw us close to Him.

Let's Pray:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for calling us and speaking to us even through your wonderful creations that we see in nature. Help us to pause long enough to admire your handiwork in this world. Thank You for waiting for us to sit at your feet and simply listen to You. Give us a thirst for more of You today and in the days ahead so that we can hear your heart and draw closer to You. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Why we should keep faith in Jesus Christ

Keep the Faith
A devotional by Patricia Russell

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
— 2 Timothy 4:7 (NIV)

Funerals for many people are morbid and sad, but I have found them to be very sobering and educational. For me, they serve as a constant reminder that I must steward every day I’m alive with wisdom.

We are reminded in Scripture to ask for wisdom so that we can use the time we are given wisely (Psalm 90:12). At most funerals, there is music and tributes. The dead person in the coffin is not able to confirm or deny all being said, but you can tell by the smiles and the nods of those who knew the person whether the speaker is telling the truth or not.

Recently, I sang at a funeral, and the testimony of those who spoke before me was that “He loved the Lord.” This is like music to the ears of people who follow Jesus Christ because his life testified to his love for God. When he was alive, the evidence of his love for God showed in his behavior. He consistently treated people in the church and in his community with agape love and respect. He lived out his beliefs. He did what the Apostle Paul stated he had done, which was, "I have kept the faith."

The Bible books of 1 Timothy and 2 Timothy focus on a letter the Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy who was a young pastor at that time. Paul was encouraging him Timothy, knowing that his days on earth were coming to an end. It was important for Timothy to keep some important things in mind as he moved forward in his role as a pastor. Paul, from the first day of his conversion (Acts 9), had learned to look fully to God for his every need. From day one of becoming a Christian, Paul understood the power of God and the call on his life. He was entrusted with a task to preach the gospel. Likewise, he reminds Timothy that he, too, must do the same.

To keep the faith means you have be prepared to be persecuted. Paul said in 2 Timothy 3:12, “Everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” Therefore, we have to prepare ourselves. The scriptures are loaded with guidance and direction for us to read, meditate on and believe what God says. It will direct us as we move through life (Psalm 119:105).

Our ultimate goal is to hear our Savior (Jesus Christ) say, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21) when we stand before Him. So, like Paul, as we start out this year, let’s keep this in the forefront of our hearts and minds.

We can set our goals, but our ultimate goal is to keep the faith that we have in Jesus Christ. Let’s live in a way that the world can see the character of Christ in our lives through our speech and behavior. Challenges in many forms will come but be determined to keep the faith! Hide the Word in your heart. As you obey God, prepare to be persecuted but remember that the one who began a good work in you is faithful to complete it (Philippians 1:6).

God’s word is certain and sure; He will keep us. Let’s set our hearts and minds to stay focused and come what may, keep the faith.

Let’s Pray:

Heavenly Father,

I am so thankful for the assurance that you’ve got me in the palm of your hands. Nothing happens without You knowing about it. We are grateful for You. Strengthen my heart and help me to remember your word when I forget and am tempted to become discouraged. I want to be able to say like Paul, “I have kept the faith.”

In Jesus’s name I pray, Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Someone who remains the same every day

The Person and the Promise Remain the Same

A devotional by Patricia Russell

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”
—Hebrews 13:8 (KJV)

I have found myself doing what my parents used to do when I was younger—pointing out places that “used to” be where a store or a building was located.

It has either been built over by a condo or new development, leaving no evidence of what was there before. I’m sure you can relate. Maybe you’ve gone back to visit a neighborhood that in your mind held memories but no longer looks the same. Sometimes it’s for the better, but many times there is a sadness that accompanies that change.

We were created to grow and become more like our Creator (God) and reflect His image in the Earth. Because of Adam and Eve’s original sin they committed in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:1-3:24) our human nature leans more toward evil than good. However, when Jesus Christ died on the cross (Matthew 27), was buried and rose again (Matthew 28), that event broke the power of sin over us (John 3:16).

Now, when we put our faith and trust in Christ, He gives us a new nature and the power to become conformed to His image. We receive the power to change for the better forever. It is an amazing gift of grace that was given to us by God, and it’s all based on a sure promise because our God cannot change and will not go back on any of His promises.

The promise of the Messiah (Jesus Christ) coming to die in order to bring us back to a relationship with God was a promise that never changed. Once again, the promise was made by the promise keeper, God, who remains the same. Our life as humans are filled with change: Our world is changing every day. Men and women alike are never satisfied with what they have but are always wanting more. Politicians make promises that often go unfulfilled. Today it’s sunny and tomorrow it’s raining. As we age, our bodies change too. I’m often stating that obvious, that I’m not 16 anymore! Our hair color goes from one shade to the next, and our other features change as we grow older.

Perhaps you’ve asked, “Does anything remain the same? Is anything constant?” The true answer is yes because God never changes. The writer of the book of Hebrews 13:8 (KJV) states, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”

You can open the Bible, read a promise in one passage, keep turning the pages and you’ll see His consistency: God does what He says He will do. His character does not evolve or become something other than who He has always been. Our faith can be rooted in this knowing. Our faith must be rooted in Someone who is constant and unwavering for it to grow. We have one constant in life who never changes: Jesus Christ.

There have been times when I’ve been discouraged and disappointed, but when I recall the goodness of God and how He has allowed me to hear a message, receive a timely phone call or text message I can see that He has not forgotten me. I can see how He has kept me. I can see His constant provision in my life. Why would I not trust Him whose name is “Faithful and True” (Revelation 19:11)?

Let’s Pray:

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for never changing. Your Word reminds us that You are the same yesterday, today and forever. There is no one like You. I want to be like You in character. Please help me to be consistent in my speech and behavior so that I can reflect your holy nature and serve You as a witness to the world for Jesus Christ while I am living on this Earth.

In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Why we need to check the soil of our hearts

Check Your Soil
A devotional by Patricia Russell

“But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”—Matthew 13:23 (NIV)

Ontario is the name of the province I’ve lived in for many years.

Growing up, I remember the jingle for a popular commercial went like this: “Good things grow in Ontario”. Grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and small posters on popsicle sticks bore these words.

Jesus Christ often used the illustrations of farmers, fields, and soil to convey the importance of growth. This message wasn’t difficult for His audience to comprehend because agriculture and farming were staples in the Middle East in that era. The industrial revolution had not arrived, so the people would understand well the process of planting seed and reaping in harvest time.

In chapter 13 of the Bible book of Matthew, Jesus told the parable of the sower who went out to plant seed. It was important to note that the quality of the soil determined the growing results of the seed. Some soil had stones, some fell by the wayside, while others took root and grew bountifully. Everyone hearing this parable would be challenged to consider the soil of their heart and decide for themselves if it was ripe for receiving seed and growing.

Personally, I know there have been times when my heart was hard, critical and religious. Just like a gardener who rakes up the soil and sees stones, one has to remove those stones from the soil before planting anything. If you plant a seed amongst stones, you soon notice that the plant is struggling to show any signs of growth. There is an obstruction to its growth. You have to take the stones out of that garden. Likewise, individually, we have to check the soil of our hearts.

Matthew 12:34 states out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. When we speak, it is a reflection of what is happening in our hearts. There is an old saying: “You cannot pour clean water from a dirty vessel.” We have to clean up the inside. We have to see the not so nice areas in our lives that are affecting our growth. We can do this by humbling ourselves and asking the Lord to show us and help us to acknowledge our areas of weakness. Confess our faults. God can handle it. As a matter of fact, He is patiently waiting for us to give our concerns to Him. When we read the Word of God (The Holy Bible) and we are convicted, this might mean there is a stone, an area in our life, God wants us to acknowledge. This is an area that needs to be, shall I say, “weeded out” so that we can grow and mature.

Self-examine your heart. Is there anything that is hindering growth in the Lord? Are there attitudes, mindsets or behaviors that other people have noticed and maybe brought to your attention? Ask the Lord to guide you. You don’t have to struggle alone. Ask a friend who is also following Jesus Christ to pray with you.

Let’s check the soil of our hearts and do some internal weeding so that with the grace of the Holy Spirit we can be a fruitful plant that brings glory to God.

Let’s Pray:

Heavenly Father, I want to grow strong in you. Show me where my heart needs to be tender and help me to respond to your Holy Spirit when you alert me to something that is not right in my life. In Jesus’s name I pray, Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Why God wants you to look like Jesus Christ

Look Like Jesus Christ and Be Deeply Rooted in Him
A devotional by Patricia Russell

“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.”—Psalm 1:1-3 (NIV)

She looked fabulous! Hair and makeup were stunning. The outfit she wore was sharp. She beamed with confidence and looked “picture perfect” until someone asked a question which seemed to cause her picture of perfection to unravel.

Her life was not what it appeared to be, and for so many of us, that is our story too. If you hit us hard enough, the area we thought was firm and grounded can explode in minutes just like when you hit a piñata hard, it breaks wide open and an overflow of candy gushes out. Perfection is what many of us are striving for, but deep-rooted conviction in truth and having humans reflect His Son (Jesus Christ) is what God is looking for in us. To look like Christ does not require a fancy brand of clothing nor an expensive price tag on our shoes. God is looking for something deeper. He is looking for a heart that hungers and thirsts after Him regularly. He is looking for those who desire Him over everything. Sometimes we have to become totally undone and hit rock bottom to realize that God is the only one who can fill the longing of our hearts, give us the peace we crave and satisfy the hunger that we need filled daily. It’s the cry of the desperate that He responds to. The voice of the weary who recognize that God is the one who can give the rest we truly need.

The person who delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on His Word, is described as a “blessed” person in Psalm 1:1. The Amplified translation describes this person as “fortunate, prosperous, and favored by God” who does not walk in the counsel or advice of the wicked. The psalmist uses the analogy of a tree whose roots are planted deeply and grow, making it clear that not only are they well-planted, but they are also healthy, thriving and blossoming. It is God’s desire that, like a healthy tree, our hearts and lives are so firmly planted in Him that we trust Him in not only the good times but when stormy weather confronts us.

We can be sure we are rooted in God’s love when He is first in our thoughts, desires and goals. We can know we are rooted when it’s His name we call on in times of trouble. Trees, when planted, are never left to fend for themselves. The person who plants the trees checks in on them to make sure their needs are met. Likewise, God watches over us and has provided for our every need. We can speak with confidence like the Apostle Paul that “this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19 NLT).

The Bible is our source of spiritual food and strength that our soul craves and needs. God’s Word is our guide providing us with wisdom and reminding us of our value. When our thoughts, plans and lives are rooted in the principles of Scripture then our lives are rooted, our thoughts are clear, and we will grow tall and strong just like the trees.

If your faith is shaky today, if you feel fearful or overwhelmed with life right now, plant your feet firmly, cry out to the Lord and dig deep in His Word. Read Psalm 1. Read it thoughtfully and prayerfully. Know that as you do what it states, your roots will go deep, and your faith will become deeply anchored in Christ. The winds will blow, but remember if you stay rooted in God, you will bring forth fruit, you will grow, and you will prosper in every area of your life.

Let’s Pray:

Heavenly Father, regardless of what I feel or see right now, the Bible says that when I delight in Your Word, I will be like a tree that is rooted. Scripture states that I am blessed. I believe what Your Word states. Please help me look to You, because You are the author and finisher of my faith. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Don't give up during difficult times, look up!

It’s Time to Arise!

A devotional by Patricia Russell

“Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.”
— Isaiah 60:1 (KJV)

For anyone who has lost a loved one through death or divorce, you understand that there is a season of grief that can be challenging for us to walk through.

This time can seem long to others, but time stands still when you are the one grieving. No one can really put a timer on how long that season will last. Whether days, months or years, there is a portion of your heart that knows a deep pain that is like nothing you’ve ever felt before. And then, like turning pages in a book, there is a day when the pain changes, opening a space for joy to take some space and help you to sit up a little stronger. I know this to be true when my father died on a sunny Friday afternoon.

My Dad and I exchanged wishes to have a great day, not knowing it would be our last morning seeing each other. I still remember taking the phone call where I was told of his passing and crying out in shock. Yet the Lord had been with me throughout the day, not only in my thoughts but like a warm blanket that I felt wrapped in the comfort of His presence when I needed it most. Perhaps you’ve known this feeling and pain too—whether a sickness leading to death or the stress of a strained relationship that ends up broken. When the pain hits, our heart feels weak but it's right then we can stretch our hands up and worship with our whole heart. It’s painful and the weight of the pain is heavy. We don’t have to carry it alone. He is present, even in the darkness.

Israel had been in captivity for many years. They obeyed then disobeyed repeatedly yet God had promised deliverance and there came a time when He spoke through his prophet to tell them to “Get up and arise.” The wise king Solomon told us “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens” (Ecclesiastes 3:1 NIV). At this time, the nation of Israel was entering a new season, and it was time to step out of the ashes of the past sin. God wanted them to step out of the memories of repeated disobedience and reconnect with the only One who could save them, deliver and comfort them: their Creator (God), who had called them to be His special people.

King Solomon learned that everything has a time. Wherever you are in life right now you may be wondering, "When will things change? When will the clouds of darkness dissipate? How long will God allow certain things to go on and on? Does He not think it’s time to turn things around? Does He not believe it’s time to bring judgment down on the wicked people?"

You may know this, but I’ll say it anyway: God knows. He is fully aware of everything that is happening in our town, city, county and country. God knows we don’t know everything, but in those times, He wants us to look up. He wants us to get up. He wants us to arise! He wants us to look up to Heaven and look forward in faith. God knows our past, and He has plans for our future. It’s a future filled with hope and promise (Jeremiah 29:11). It’s time to rise.

Let’s Pray:

Dear Lord, I know You are fully aware of where I am and how I’m feeling right now. I look to You in faith believing You see what’s happening in my present, but You also hold my future. So, I trust You and look to You, dear God. Thank You for the light of hope that shines bright because that light is You! In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Why worshipping God means warfare

Worship is Warfare
A devotional by Patricia Russell

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.”—2 Corinthians 10:4 (KJV)

Did the title of my devotional today catch you off guard?

Contrary to popular belief, worship is more than swaying and singing to a soft, melodic song with hands raised and eyes closed. Sometimes worship is war. War in the heavenlies, that is.

Since the Garden of Eden (humankind’s first home on Earth), we have been on constant alert because of a real enemy known as Satan or “the devil”. Our enemy has continued to barrage us on every aspect of life and attack us from all angles because is committed to steal, kill and destroy anyone and anything that remotely reflects the image of God (John 10:10). He wanted to usurp God’s authority in Heaven. Therefore, God removed Satan from his position as chief worship leader and permanently evicted him from Heaven (Isaiah 14:12-15). However, the devil remains determined to deceive and tempt humankind to follow his footsteps which can be summed up in one word: rebellion. This is the war that started before mankind was even created. According to Dictionary.com, war is defined as, “active hostility or contention”. Another definition is “a struggle to achieve a goal”. The devil knows he will never fully succeed as long as followers of Jesus Christ continue to serve the true King wholeheartedly.

All things considered, when we as believers in God gather together to give honor to Jesus our King—whether by worshipping Him in song, reading His Word (The Holy Bible) together, or listening to the Word of God being preached—oftentimes a war begins because the enemy wants to poke his head in to disrupt. Satan wants to be worshipped instead of God. He may send distractions in our minds. Sometimes he’ll drop accusations in our mind to make us feel we are not worthy to be in the Lord’s presence because of things we may have said or done. Yet when we sing songs of worship to God or recite scriptures, he leaves us alone with God.

There are times we read scripture but what we see in the natural is the complete opposite and we struggle. Do we believe what God said or what our eyes see? Our spirits are in fight when we are tempted to doubt what we’ve read in the Bible. Oftentimes we are dealing with circumstances in life and feel discouraged because things are not moving in the direction in which we wish they were moving. We want to trust God and worship Him, but we’re feeling conflicted because of our life circumstances.

It’s during these times that we must push through the turmoil of mixed feelings so we can receive the strength that only the One who is stronger than us can give. God has given us His Word (The Holy Bible) to read, study and learn how to deal with these enemy tactics that cause our soul to feel weary. It’s in these times we can sing melodies with scripture reminding ourselves that “For God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV). It’s in these moments where we must declare the Bible states, we ought to “be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NLT).

Since God’s will is for us to give thanks in all things, it would appear to be a holy worship skill that we must learn to overcome the darts of weariness and worry that will come with hard times. It can be a struggle, but we can be victorious with Jesus Christ on our side! When we are tempted to compromise our belief in what God says, we need to “be strong and very courageous” (Joshua 1:7 NLT). When we obey God’s commands then our obedience helps us to be successful in overcoming every obstacle.

Physical war in the natural is difficult and intense. However, when wage war in worshipping our Savior (Jesus Christ), we can overcome fear, disappointment, discouragement, depression and unhappiness as we press through in praise, worshipping the One who has risen from the dead and sits at the right hand of the Father (God) praying and interceding on our behalf. In Christ, we always win!

Let’s Pray:

Dear Lord,

Thank You for reminding me that although spiritual warfare is real, I can overcome it by my testimony and the blood of Jesus Christ. Thank You that your Word tells me that the weapons I fight with are spiritual. Thank You for reminding me that you have provided your Word as a weapon against the enemy’s lies. I can overcome because You already won the war for me. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Learning to worship God while we wait on Him

Worship While you Wait
A devotional by Patricia Russell

“Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.”—Psalm 27:14 (NLT)

I put a note in the calendar on my phone to remind me to arrive at least 15 minutes before the exact start time of my appointment with my doctor. On the day of my appointment, I walked into my doctor's office with plenty of time to spare.

I greeted the receptionist and took a seat. I noticed several other patients were waiting. I hoped and prayed they were not before me because I was on time. I made a mental note of the notice on the wall about a charge for missed appointments. That would not be my story today because I was on time.

Trying to relax, I opened my book to read the next chapter. I wanted to finish reading this chapter before it was my turn to see the doctor. After I finished reading the chapter, I looked at my watch and saw that I had been waiting well past my appointment time. Taking a deep breath, I prayed quietly that I would be called shortly. Can you relate to sitting in a waiting room for an appointment that you had planned your day around, only for the start time to be delayed much longer than you expected? Waiting is not fun, but every one of us faces this challenge more often than we would like.

Sometimes we are waiting on God to answer a prayer that we’ve been looking for an answer for some time. Day after day we wait in expectation. One thing I’ve had to repeatedly learn during this time of waiting is to trust Him. Trust that He has heard my prayer and that He wants me to rest in Him. God also wants me to worship Him while I wait. Trusting God requires us to learn His character. Scripture shows us that we are not alone in learning this life lesson.

There is a story in the Bible about a woman named Anna (Luke 2:36-38). She was someone who had waited many years for God to answer her prayer. The Bible tells us that Anna’s husband died when she was very young. After his death, she spent her days in the temple. She was one of many people who were waiting to see the fulfillment of the prophecy of Messiah’s birth in Bethlehem.

How was Anna able to do this for many years? She fasted from food for certain times as a spiritual discipline and she prayed to the Lord. She communicated with God and faithfully gave honor to God. When we worship through prayer and wait upon the Lord, there is a supernatural strength we are given that enables us to see our situation(s) with a different perspective. God wants us to delight so much in Him that we desire what He wants. Making His desire priority means we are placing a high worth on Him. Can we expect Him to direct our steps? Absolutely! The psalmist said in Psalm 27:14 to wait patiently for the Lord. Scripture also says in Psalm 27:13 (NLT) that he is confident he “will see the Lord’s goodness.”

The psalmist had experienced the Lord’s faithfulness just like Anna had. We too will see His faithfulness. However, we must be patient enough to wait on the Lord.

In closing, think about this: When people are honored at a public event the host will speak about that person’s character, what they have done to contribute to this world, and how they have impacted lives. Everyone’s focus is on that person with deep respect. But there is also an expectation that person will continue to do exemplary things to help make the world a better place.

Let’s put God in the spotlight and magnify His character. He has a flawless track record! Remember this when it comes to waiting on the Lord and trusting Him: God’s ways are not like ours and His timeline is different. But we can trust Him to always show up right on time and help us because His timing is perfect. Therefore, let’s continue to wait for Him and be courageous. Let’s honor God in our daily lives while we trust in Him, wait on Him and listen to His voice. Note: I’ve learned that waiting becomes less stressful because we’re worshipping God in the process.

Let’s Pray:

Dear Lord,

Sometimes it is so difficult to wait when I’ve prayed for so long for an answer. Yet, I’ve learned to praise You for who You are and thank You for what you’ve done in the past. I praise You for the testimonies throughout Scripture that showcase your faithfulness. As I wait on You, help me to rest in Your will. Thank You in advance for hearing my cry and sending the answers to my prayers. Help me to wait patiently to hear from You. Teach me to trust your perfect timing.

In Jesus’s Name I pray.

Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Why we need to know the voice of Jesus Christ

Do You Know His Voice

A devotional by Patricia Russell

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
—John 10:27 (KJV)

On more than one occasion, I’ve heard people say to me: “You sound just like (name of a certain singer)” when they hear me sing. This is a compliment, yet I know that I can never duplicate someone else’s voice.

Everyone has a unique sound in their tone, accent, and manner. Voice is defined as the sound or sounds uttered through the mouth. We identify who a person is by the way they sound to us when they speak or sing. We can only do that effectively if we are familiar with or have heard the person’s voice on many different occasions. When we truly know someone’s voice then even in a crowded or noisy area, we can instantly identify who is speaking, singing or communicating.

Jesus Christ tells us in John 10:27 that the sheep know the voice of their shepherd. They cannot be easily fooled. You can dress up like a shepherd and try to behave like one but the minute you open your mouth the sheep know if you are theirs or an imposter.

God wants us to know His voice so well that we have no doubt about who is speaking. We often ask how we can know God’s voice. He gives us direction through His Word (The Holy Bible). When choosing right from wrong, we can learn from Psalm 119:11 (KJV), which says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

When we are confused, the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth (John 16:13). God’s Word says in (Isaiah 30:21 NLT), “Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left.”

The more time we spend with the Lord and His Word is the more we are not only familiar with, but we learn, the sound of His voice. God wants us to be completely dependent on Him so that just like sheep who know Christ as their Shepherd, we know Him too. In times of storm or stress we can rest in God and trust Him completely.

With so much uncertainty and fear dominating the airwaves, God wants you and I to know that He is in control. God wants us to know that we can still be strong and courageous, and we can run to Him with our every concern. Do you know His voice?

God’s voice speaks strength in times of weakness, peace when storm clouds roll, hope when we feel desperate and all alone. Notice: His voice is opposite to fear and despair. We must know His voice in this modern day because as the hard times come, we can quickly be reminded of the hope we have in Him. In troubled times, we need to rely on what we know from His Word (The Holy Bible). We need to draw from how we have experienced Him in the past. What we have known of God from the past will not only keep us in the present, but also in the days to come.

Let’s Pray: Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us and showing us that we can know your voice in your written Word and the voice of Holy Spirit. Help us to walk in obedience and trust You even when life looks and feels uncertain, knowing you are still God. Therefore, you are always in control. Help us to remember this and listen to Your Voice. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.
