The Power of Prayer

“Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years! Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the earth began to yield its crops.”—James 5:17-18 (NLT)

Is prayer your last resort or your first line of defense?

Life can come at us fast—sometimes striking us at a lightning-fast speed! In those challenging moments, praying seems useless. You may have asked yourself, “How can praying change what’s happening to me right now?”

If that’s you right now, I get it because I have said that before as well. However, as I grew deeper in my faith and relationship with the Lord, my thoughts changed.

Oftentimes we are expecting God to either stop the storm or don’t allow it to happen. When what’s happening does not “seem” to cooperate with our prayer, then the enemy plants a seed in our mind. It shows up as thoughts that sound something like this: See? Prayer doesn’t work! It has no power. If it did, then why did that happen? Have you ever heard those lies whispered by the enemy?

In those moments, the challenge we face may appear as if nothing is changing. But have you ever considered that it could have been worse? What if you didn’t pray? What else might have taken place that could have destroyed you? But by the grace of God, He heard your prayers and kept you alive.

As we reflect on the life of Elijah and his life of prayer and faith, it sets the tone for how we should react to what is happening in our minds and in the world around us. Elijah prayed according to the will of God for no rain to fall and it didn’t (1 Kings 17:1). It’s in that same way God wants us to exercise our faith in Him.

What if He doesn’t answer the way we want Him to and in the time we want Him to? Does that mean prayer is powerless? What I have learned is that prayer is not just God answering me; it’s building our relationship with Him. This makes a difference in our lives.

The power that prayer has is to not only pull down strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4), but to help us understand that when the answer isn’t as we expected, God is still Sovereign and prayer is still a necessary and a vital piece of the Armor of God that He encourages us to wear every day and night (Ephesians 6:10-18).

Scriptures are replete with the prayers of faith that moved mountains (Matthew 17:20), caused the Red Sea to part (Exodus 14:21-23). This is evidence that prayer has power and moves God to act (Matthew 21:22). The question then becomes, “Do we believe what we are praying for?” Do we believe in the importance and effective use of prayer? The Word of God (The Holy Bible) declares in James 5:16 (KJV), “the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” If we don’t expect to receive what we asked for, then there’s a good chance we are treating prayer a last resort and not the first line of defense.

This season of my life seems very long. There are things that I have been praying and believing God for—most likely you are as well. While the specific things I have been talking to the Lord about have not materialized yet, I have noticed that other things that I have prayed for decades and years ago are being answered. Prayer isn’t less effective because the answer isn’t what we expected; it’s more effective because it changes our hearts and builds our faith.

Think back to a time when you prayed and you didn’t receive what you asked for from God. Over time, what did you notice about your heart? Did the Lord open the eyes of your heart and shown you something, that all you could do was nod your head and said “Father, thank You?” I have. In that moment, did you think your prayer was meaningless because it didn’t materialize as you thought or did you think, “My God, what if what I requested had come to pass? Thank You for not answering that prayer how I wanted it to be answered!”

Today I want to encourage you to keep praying! Prayer will change things and it will also change you. Know that as the storms come—literally and figuratively— God hears our prayers and He will come through in the way that is best for us.

Don’t believe the lies of the enemy telling you that prayer has no power! The devil will stop at nothing to ensure we don’t grasp the fact that prayer always works!

God is not deaf. He will answer our prayers in His perfect time and according to His will. Remember: God’s response is either a “Yes”, “No” or “Wait”. Whatever the response you feel He is giving you, trust His timing and His best for you.

Know that before the foundations of this Earth were made and humans were created by God, He knew what you would face today. He knew the exact need and made plans for it to be met. He is not withholding from you. Instead, in your season of waiting, God is developing within you the importance of prayer and waiting.

Let’s Pray:

Lord, thank You for teaching us the importance of prayer! You showed us that even before we pray, You hear us and you answer us. Help us to look to You to access this power of prayer that You have given us to pull down, root up, to bind, to loose and to plant. It’s You who gives us this authority. Help us to stand in it and use our voice to make changes happen. We love You and thank You, God. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: The story of Noah's Ark taught me about doors

When God Says No

“The animals going in were male and female of every living thing, as God had commanded Noah. Then the Lord shut him in.”—Genesis 7:16 (NIV)

Recently, I heard something that struck a chord deep within me.

It was a familiar Bible verse for me (Genesis 7:16), but particularly the latter part of verse 16 resonated with me: “Then the Lord shut him in.” This is a passage I have read plenty of times before, yet this time I believe I needed to hear a message that I had not previously associated with this verse. God spoke to my heart immediately and drew my eyes to something I had never observed before.

In this Bible story about Noah’s Ark, the Lord gave Noah clear instructions on what to do: Enter the ark with his family and bring certain types of animals with him (Genesis 7:13-16). If you are like me, you can sometimes focus solely on what God didn’t do and how long we have had to wait on Him. This causes us to be focused more on our feelings than the facts and then we miss the lesson.

What hit me was that it was God who closed the door of the ark after Noah and his family and the animals were safely inside this refuge. I found that there is great significance in the fact that it was God who shut Noah in, not anyone else. This is what I’ve learned from this Bible verse and our modern-day life: God closes doors! Sometimes, we believe that it was the enemy closing the door on our dreams for our future. But I learned that as long as we believe in God and are walking in faith with Jesus Christ then it is God who allows those doors to be closed.

But what’s on the inside of that closed door? God’s provision. And that’s what He is drawing our attention to. When our focus is only on what He kept from us, we miss the fact that when He closes the door—or more than one door—all that you and I need is already on the inside with us. The provision we need and the answer we need is behind that closed door; we just don’t see it, or think it could be there, but it is. Even more important than that, could it be that the door was closed for our protection? And could it be that the closed door doesn’t mean it would never be open, just not now?

Sometimes, God says “no” in response to our prayers for an opportunity we believe we deserved, a door we think should have been opened, a relationship He should have healed, the finances He should have provided, or the home we shouldn’t have lost. You name it! But could it be that there is a set time for us to receive blessings from God? Perhaps we have to go through this period of difficulty so that when He opens the door, we know without the shadow of a doubt that He did it?

For the time while Noah was locked inside the ark, he was not alone. God was with Him, and He is with you as well. Now, what can we do when it looks like God is missing, when it seems as if He hasn’t heard our cry and He has denied our prayer requests? We have the choice to focus on God and on everything else that He has provided for us. We can trust that God knows our needs before we do (Matthew 6:8) and He will always provide for us (Philippians 4:19).

If, in closing the door, God has already given us all we need, why then are we so focused on what isn’t happening for us instead of looking at the love of our Heavenly Father, who knows what we need? God knows best about the timing of that need, and in His Sovereignty, He’s made preparations and provisions for us until the set time when He grants us the desires of our hearts according to His will. Satan (the enemy of our souls) wants us to miss all that God has done. He wants us to forget all the provisions that God has made in our lives. The devil wants us to doubt that God will ever come through for us again.

Let’s change our focus and our gaze and look instead to the One who says in Ephesians 3:20 (NIV), “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.” God wants the absolute best for us! When He is saying No to our requests, look behind the closed door and see what He has already given you.

Let’s Pray:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Help us to see You clearly in the midst of all that is happening that causes us to doubt You. Help us to see that a “no” from You isn’t a bad thing; it's what is best for us. Turn our gaze to You, Lord, and cause us to rejoice in You, for You are good all the time! Thank You, God, for being on time with your answers to all our prayer requests. Help us to praise Your Name forever! In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

The Love of God

“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”—John 3:16 (NLT)

John 3:16 is such a familiar Scripture to many people, but have you ever paused and considered what it truly must have cost God to send His sinless and perfect Son (Jesus Christ) to lay down His life for you and me?

As a parent I can’t truly fathom this—to be faced with losing your only child to save the entire world, knowing how He would be rejected and what He would have to go through, I don’t know if I could let my child be a sacrifice to save even one person, much less the entire world! But that’s why God is God, and we are not.

As we go through this Easter season when we acknowledge the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord and Savior (Jesus Christ), sometimes we can miss the true impact of what God has done because we have allowed it to become normal.

We sing the songs and read the scriptures, but if we are honest, sometimes the meaning of what we are singing and reading is lost on us and the magnitude of what Christ has done for us seems trivial. This is because the cares and concerns of this world overwhelm us to the point where we forget or take for granted the sacrifice that was made for us. This was a one-time sacrifice planned before the foundations of the world and born out of God’s love for us and the desire for us to be reconciled and reunited with Him (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). Such love!

What is love? In my own definition, it is an emotion followed by the action of someone who has care and concern for us, but that is the natural love of humankind. But the love God expresses towards us is agape love. It is the sacrificial and unconditional love that God has for us. We see this demonstrated in 1 John 4:9-10 (NLT): “God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” There is nothing that you and I can do to earn God’s love. We can’t work for it. God’s love is given to us freely.

As I reflect on my own life and the many mistakes I made, and the countless times when I willingly and sometimes unwillingly choose sin over God’s love for me, I used to ask myself, “How could it still be possible for God to love me?” To think that our Lord and Savior who knows the beginning and the end (Isaiah 46:10), and all the choices we would make in between that would hurt His heart, God still made the choice to send His only Son to die for us (John 3:16-17).

We deserve the penalty of what we did (Romans 6:23), but because God loves us, He gave each of us the choice to accept His love or reject it. God knows what the benefits and penalties are, and He gave all humanity the equal choice: Choose eternal life to be reunited with Him in Heaven or choose eternal separation.

Remember: No one else can love us the way the Lord does. His undying love for us is unconditional and perfect. Our love as humans can be fickle and dependent on how we are feeling in the moment. We withdraw it from others when things go awry and bestow it when things are going well. Thankfully, that is not the type of love God has for us! Can you imagine what it would be like to one minute know you are forgiven by God and have the promise of eternal life then the next minute, that blessed assurance is taken away? Who could stand that kind of up and down relationship with the Lord? The good news is that it is not possible for God to change His mind (Numbers 23:19). God’s love for us is constant and steadfast. It doesn’t change whether we think we deserve it not, or whether we did something good or bad. Neither does it change with our life’s situations and challenges.

As we go through this life on Earth, how will you approach Christ’s love for you? Will you choose to embrace and accept what He did on the cross for you, or will you walk away believing it is not possible for God to love you unconditionally?

As a believer and follower of Jesus Christ, every day is a reminder of what God did for me. This Easter season is dear to me because it is a reminder that the Maker of Heaven and Earth, the King of the Universe and Creator of this world, gave to us His only Son as a living sacrifice in order to save us from our sins.

Our focus should not be on why Jesus Christ died for us, but to acknowledge that He willingly laid down His life for you and me. As we celebrate Christ’s death and resurrection, let’s focus more intently on what we read in the Bible and the songs we sing in church to celebrate Christ’s victory over death and our hope of salvation. May this cause us to be reminded that the Eternal King (God and Jesus Christ) loves us unconditionally and forever!

Father God,

Thank You for your love for us. Thank You for sending your Son to die for us even though we didn’t deserve it. We are grateful for your choice to lay your life down for us. We honor and praise you for all you have done and will do for us. Thank You, Jesus!

What’s in Your Hands?

Then the Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?”

—Exodus 4:2 (NIV)

A question the Lord asked me recently was, “What is that in your hand?”

I was asking Him to open doors for me and that's the response that came to me. I remember pausing at hearing the question. I didn't bother to ask the follow-up question because I knew immediately what He meant.

As I read Exodus chapter four, it paints a picture of Moses, unsure of himself and how God would use him to deliver the Israelites from their enemies. Like Moses, it’s so easy for us to see our insufficiencies and focus on what we think we lack that we miss what is right in front of our eyes! We don’t realize what God can do with what we already have.

I loved that in asking that question of Moses, the Lord demonstrated to him how powerful the one thing that he had in his hand that seemed so insignificant could be used so mightily. The "thing" we have in our hands is important! These aren't any old gifts and talents God placed on the inside of us. We need to surrender them to God and their use to Him then trust His plan. Just like God did with Moses, He will demonstrate to us what we can accomplish with what we have in our hands. However, it starts with trust. Without believing that God can use our gifts, they are limited in power and can't accomplish much without His anointing on them.

Trust requires obedience—a necessary ingredient that puts faith into action. When the Lord tells us what to do with what we have, it's imperative that we be willing to do it. I know it's not easy. There are times when we have our own preconceived notion of how things should work so we miss the opportunity because it doesn't look the way we expect it to. The question then becomes, “How can God expect me to use that? I have tried using it before but it didn't work!” It had a limited effect and people didn't believe it could make a difference.

What would happen if we took a different approach? What if we confess to God our limited thoughts and ask for faith and trust to increase within us? What if we ask God for the obedience to move in His direction then ask Him to show us how to use what we have in our hands? We know at the end of the Bible story in Exodus chapter four, the Lord used what Moses had to accomplish His will.

This Bible story rings true for us in our modern day! Are you struggling with knowing what to do and asking God to open doors for you? Is God asking you the same question He asked Moses in Exodus 4:2? Are you willing to, like Moses, lay your “rod” down and trust that God will demonstrate His power within you for you to do what He has created you to do?

All I can say to you is that God is faithful. He is a promise keeper. All the time I was praying for God to open doors for me, God wanted me to release what I had in my hand to Him and move by faith. As I did, God opened opportunities for me in two paying clients and I am continuing to believe for more opportunities. As I opened my hands and laid my rod down before Him, I believe He was waiting on me to expose what He already gave me and if I trusted Him with my gifts, then and only then could He use them for His glory and honor.

But it starts with answering the question by identifying what we already have, exercising our faith to move and trust Him enough to believe that He will make the way plain, open the doors that need opening and provide at each step of the way.

My encouragement for you is that like Moses, question God, but don't stay at that place. Move forward by putting your faith in action! If your faith is weak and you don't trust that God can use you, pray for your faith to increase. I am praying for you to walk in obedience, knowing that if God is asking you to acknowledge what is in your hands, He has a plan to use it through you, for His glory and honor.

Spirit of the Living God, I place my friend before you today. You are aware of the space they are in. You know that they are unsure of what you have called them to do. They don’t know how to use the gifts You’ve given to them. I pray You will demonstrate your power before their eyes! Please use the very thing they may believe is unimportant to show the power they have in their hands. Help them to trust You like Moses did so You can use them to do wonders in your Kingdom! In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: What to do when God says no to your prayers

What is Your Response When God Says No?

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”— Romans 8:28 (NIV)

When my siblings and I were children and asked our parents for things, the answer that excited and filled us with joy was “Yes.” Our ears seemed not trained to hear any other response.

In our limited mind view, hearing “no” meant we were denied what we through our young eyes thought was best for us, and we pouted or threw tantrums. We believed what we asked for was what was best for us, and hearing that response made us feel that our parents did not love us because if they did, they would have given us what we wanted. This is how we respond to the Lord at times.

2 Samuel 12 recounts how David sinned against the Lord by sleeping with Uriah's wife. The Lord sent Nathan the prophet to confront him about it, and he acknowledged his sin. Bathsheba became pregnant, but that child would die according to the word of the Lord. You may wonder what this has to do with God saying no. It has everything to do with it. The child became ill, and David decided to fast. This is a spiritual discipline where you abstain from eating food and drinking. You spend a lot of time praying to God from the depths of your heart about what you hope He will answer “yes” to in response. Perhaps in fasting, David thought the Lord would heal his baby and the child would live. But God said “no” in the answer to David’s prayers. David’s newborn baby died.

How often has God said no to your request, and your response is just like King David’s initial idea to fast and pray hoping God will change His mind? Maybe you haven't, but I can recall situations when God said no to me, and yes was the answer I thought I needed. My response was to fast and pray in strong hope that He would change His mind, but He didn't.

Sometimes we forget we serve a Sovereign God who knows the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10), what we need, when we need it, and what is best for us.

The Lord tells us in Matthew 7:11 (NIV), “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” Therefore, if we petition God for our needs and in His Sovereignty, He says no, then it stands to reason that His no is based on Him knowing all the facts, what is best for us and not giving something to us that He already knows would ultimately not work for our good.

Have you ever been so desperate for God to do something for you, so desperate for His yes, that when He responds differently than you expected, you are left in a tailspin, feeling dejected, neglected, and wondering if God doesn't understand what you need? That was me. In those times, I used to pout and be miffed at God because He denied me something I believed was best for me.

As we read further in the key scripture above, King David fasted and prayed. God still said “no” and his baby died. Consider David’s response from 2 Samuel 12:18-20 (NIV) that reads, “On the seventh day the child died. David’s attendants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they thought, “While the child was still living, he wouldn’t listen to us when we spoke to him. How can we now tell him the child is dead? He may do something desperate.” David noticed that his attendants were whispering among themselves, and he realized the child was dead. “Is the child dead?” he asked. “Yes,” they replied, “he is dead.” Then David got up from the ground. After he had washed, put on lotions and changed his clothes, he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they served him food, and he ate.”

David's response should be our model response. He hoped he could change God's heart, but he couldn't because the baby wasn't part of God's plan for him. Instead of pouting and withholding his love from God in worship, David changed his posture. He cleansed himself, and then he went to worship the Lord Jesus Christ.

When we hear God's response to our request, and it doesn't meet our expectations, I believe the Lord desires us to come to Him, let Him know how we are feeling, and choose to worship Him instead. We need to trust in His Sovereignty and trust His heart for us. God’s response of “no” is never meant to withdraw or withhold anything good from you. But because He is all-knowing and has your absolute best interest at heart, if He says “no” then that answer is in our best interest.

What are you struggling with today? Have you fasted and prayed about it, and God has still said no? Would you choose today to respond like David by accepting God’s “no” then worshipping God for who He is, the King of all kings, the Creator of Heaven and Earth? Remember, God is your Heavenly Father and He loves you.

Today, let's choose to worship God instead of worry and trust that His plans for us are perfect. Whatever God’s response to our petitions are, our responsibility is to acknowledge His Lordship and Sovereignty then be reminded that God always work all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).

Let’s Pray:

Father God,

How grateful we are for your love and the good plans You have for us. We confess that we don’t always understand when our requests aren’t answered in the way we expect and want. Please forgive us for doubting your good plans for us. Thank You for being Sovereign Lord. Thanks for the assurance that we can trust You. Help us to remember that You always keep your word. Strengthen us as we wait on You.

In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Why we should focus on Jesus Christ

The Shift
A devotional by Colette Lawrence

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!

Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”— Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV)

Have you been looking at the past and wondering “Lord, when?”

I know I have done that so many times when life gets hard, the challenges seem overwhelming, and there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

This is the start of a new year. It carries with it the promise and hope of change. However, not all of us are at the place where we can receive that promise. Instead, we are fixated on what didn’t work, the number of times we have tried and failed, the turmoil we face in our relationships, the loss we suffered, and so on. We complain about what God hasn’t done, and we get upset with Him like petulant children.

Today, the Lord is reminding us through His words advising us to not focus on the past that we are to not to dwell there because He is doing something new in our present. My friends, if our focus remains on the past and on what God didn’t do, then neither you nor I are in a place to “see” what God is doing. We cannot look backward and forward simultaneously, so the decision is ours. Where will your gaze be fixed?

I know it’s not easy to believe that a shift is coming, but it is. In the same way that the Lord gives us seedtime and harvest and reminds us that there is a season for everything under the sun, we can trust that He will keep all of His promises. The promise made to the children of Israel of making a way in the wilderness and streams in the desert (Isaiah 43:19) can also be claimed by us. They went through judgments and would face even more. However, the Lord reminded them that He was still their God when He said in Isaiah 43:15 (NIV), “I am the Lord, your Holy One, Israel’s Creator, your King.”

The Lord knows you, your challenges, heartache, and pain. He is touched by the feelings of your infirmity, and He understands how you are feeling and sees you right where you are. What I love about this is that the Lord understands the season we are in and where our gaze is fixed. I believe God is saying gently to you, “Look to Me. Focus your attention on Me and then all your cares—everything that is affecting you—will become dim in My presence.”

You may be in the wilderness or approaching it. Wherever you are in that journey, you can be comforted with the promise that as you fix your gaze on the Lord, He will make streams in the wasteland for you (Isaiah 43:19). Last year might have been a very hard year for you. I understand because it was true for me as well. However, as I look forward, I am comforted with the hope of a promise that I know will be fulfilled because He who has promised is faithful.

There is a shift coming, a change. I pray that you will be ready to see it and prepared to receive it. Whatever challenge you may be faced with, God is with you, right by your side, and He has wonderful plans for you. Look up and see that He is doing something new for you! Look back to reflect and express gratitude for what God has done then look forward to continuing to move into what God has for you in the future. Ask Him for spiritual eyes and discernment to see His revelations as they unfold.

Let’s Pray: Heavenly Father, I pray that You minister to every soul who needs a gentle reminder to look up to You today and to know that You keep Your promises. May they rest in the fact that what You say You will do, You always will do. Thank You for the shift that is coming. We look forward to the future you have for us with anticipation. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
