Devotionals for the Heart: Watching the sunrise taught me about God

Watching the Sunrise Taught Me About God

A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised.”—Psalm 113:3 (NIV)

Bolting from underneath the bedcovers, I shouted, “Alan, did you know it’s 4:23 in the morning? What happened to the alarm?”

An early-morning medical procedure meant we needed the clock alarm set so we would wake up on time. Alan needed to leave the house at 5 o’clock that morning. He had specific instructions to not eat breakfast. He was allowed a sip of water with his morning medicines. As I reached for the clock to check the time, I noticed we were awake before sunrise.

The September morning began with humidity blanketing the air. Windows dripped with moisture from the contrast in outdoor and indoor temperatures. The neighborhood was quiet. Darkness enveloped the area for a while longer. The stillness would soon give way to sounds of school buses and travelers.

As Alan prepared for the hospital visit, I looked outside and turned on a porch light. The air was still. No leaves moving. No frogs on the sidewalk. No gators or coyotes roaming in the yards. A bright star caught my eye as I looked up to the sky. I spoke aloud, “Thank You, God.”

We held hands and prayed before Alan left for the hospital. He suggested that I go back to sleep. He didn’t want me to go with him because this would be a quick procedure to check his heart. Sometimes, I believe he’s concerned that I will worry if I ride along with him for medical appointments. I do worry, but I’m thankful to place that concern in God’s hands.

I waved goodbye as the car left. I prayed for my husband’s safety to and from the hospital. I prayed for the medical staff. I thanked God for the glorious day He provided. I thanked God for the stillness that calmed me.

Although Alan suggested that I go back to sleep, I couldn’t. My mind was racing. The computer was on, so I decided to check for emails. Daylight was dawning minute by minute. Where darkness had covered everything, a hint of light appeared as morning began to emerge. The quiet continued.

I noticed a flicker of something by the hummingbird feeder. There was enough light for me to see the beautiful creature gathering nectar from each opening. As I sat motionless, the hummingbird created by God was already busy at work. I continued to stare and marvel at the speed and beauty of the tiny bird. Minutes ticked by and the light took over the darkness. Another day was given by God. Nighttime was now over until the setting of the sun later in the evening.

Scripture references many times to give thanks to God. In good times and in bad times, we are called to give thanks to God. Giving thanks when we are journeying through something difficult is not always easy. Giving thanks when life is great is easier at times. Yet, the Bible tells us to give thanks at all times. During hardships we can pray and thank our Heavenly Father (God) for His love and for the opportunity to pray. When joy abounds, we can pray and give thanks to Him for His blessings and mercy.

That morning, I prayed words of thanksgiving for hummingbirds, wonderful medical professionals, safe drivers, my sweet husband, the darkness that turned into light, and for many other blessings from our Heavenly Father.

Have you seen the sunrise? Have you thanked God for His creations?

Let’s Pray: Dear God, we give thanks for Your creations. From sunrise to sunset, your mercies and love are forever. Thank You, Lord! In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: Believing in God isn't the same as knowing Him

Believing Isn’t the Same as Knowing Him
A devotional by Heidi Lewis-Ivey

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
—Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV)

A pastor friend of mine asked me to teach a Christian Foundations course for a group of aspiring ministers she's raising up. This week's lesson was “Faith Toward God.” I've taught on faith more times than I can count, but I didn’t expect it to hit me the way it did. But somewhere in the middle of preparing, I got stuck on one question: How does faith in a God I can't see turn into knowing Him?

Because those are two different things. I think a lot of us live in the first one without realizing it. Let’s break this down.

Believing He's There:

Most of us start here, whether we remember starting or not. Somewhere along the way we came to believe God exists. We believe there is a Creator, a Judge, a Someone behind all of this. Hebrews 11:1 (NKJV) puts words to that starting point: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

That's a real and necessary step. But as I sat with the next verse this week, I realized I read past something important my whole life that is found in Hebrews 11:6 (NJKV). It says, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

It's not just “believe He exists”. It's “believe He rewards those who seek Him”. That second half is the part I think I'd been skipping. Believing God is there is one thing. Believing He responds when you look for Him is another thing entirely, and it's the part that turns faith from an idea into a pursuit.

I Can Believe the Right Things and Still Not Know Him:

This is the verse that stopped me while I was preparing for the lesson. James 2:19 (NKJV) reads, “You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!”

I read that and thought, “Well, that's humbling. Demons have better theology than half of us. They know exactly who God is. And it does absolutely nothing for them, because knowing facts about someone isn't the same as knowing them.”

I think I've done that with God more than I'd like to admit. I believed the right things. Said the right things. And still kept Him at arm's length, more like a concept I agreed with than a Person I walked with.

He's Not an Idea, He's Alive:

What changed something in me this week was sitting with this phrase: the living and true God. Paul uses it describing people who'd turned away from idols. He said in 1 Thessalonians 1:9 (NKJV), “For they themselves declare concerning us what manner of entry we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God.”

Idols don't do anything. They don't answer, they don't respond, they don't know you're there. And if I'm honest, I can treat God like an idol without ever bowing to a statue just by keeping Him as a distant idea instead of a living presence. Jeremiah 10:10 (NKJV) says it plainly: “But the Lord is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King.”

Living. Present. Here. That's a very different thing to have faith towards than a concept in a book.

So How Do You Actually Get There?

I don't think this shift happens automatically just because time passes. A few things stood out to me as I thought through it—not as steps to check off, but more like doors that were already open, waiting. One is simply hearing from Him. Paul says faith comes by hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17). I can't know someone whose voice I never listen to, and I think that's true of God too. The more time I spend in His Word and in prayer, the less abstract He becomes.

Another is that seeking Him isn't a shot in the dark. God promises this in Jeremiah 29:13 (NKJV), “And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” That's not a maybe. That's a promise from a God who wants to be found. It is a reminder that we can't do anything to earn His love. His heart toward us was set long before we ever sought Him.

And then there's what Jesus says eternal life is. Not “believing the correct doctrine.” Knowing Him like He says in John 17:3 (NKJV) that reads, “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” The Apostle Paul wanted that so badly he called it the goal of his whole life. He said this in Philippians 3:10 (KJV): “That I may know Him.”

Not know about Him. Know Him. In other words, not a mere intellectual belief, but an experiential, intimate relationship with Him. That’s what I want. I want to know Him and live so close to Him, that when He whispers, I hear it.

Coming Closer, Not Just Believing Harder

Here's what I keep coming back to since teaching this: because of Jesus Christ, we're not left to approach an unseen God from a distance, hoping He notices us. Scripture says we get to come close. According to Hebrews 4:16 (NKJV), “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

Boldly. Not timidly, not from far off, not just believing Him from across the room. We're invited in. That's the shift I was trying to put words to in class this week: Faith toward God was never supposed to be the finish line. It's the doorway. On the other side of it is an actual Person, alive and present, who wants to be known.

The Bible says in John 1:12 (NKJV), “As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.”

The Holy Spirit spoke to me years ago. He said, “Faith is progressive and it is historical.” This means we grow in faith as we continue to approach Him through His Word (The Holy Bible), and in prayer. Faith is historical because there is this record of God’s love and faithfulness toward us that says, “If He did there (wherever there is), surely He can do it here.”

Believing got me to the door. Knowing Him intimately is what's on the other side of it and honestly, I'm still walking through.

Let’s Pray:

Lord,

Thank You that You are not a distant idea, but the living and true God who is near, present, and real. We confess that it's possible to believe the right things about You and still keep You at arm's length. Forgive us for the times we've settled for facts about You instead of relationship with You.

Stir in us a hunger to seek You with all our heart, trusting Your promise that those who seek You will find You. Let our faith not stop at believing You exist but carry us into knowing the way the Apostle Paul desired in Philippians 3:10, “That I may know Him.”

Thank You that through Jesus we don't have to approach You from a distance. We can come boldly, not because we've earned it, but because You've already made the way. Draw us closer today. Let what we know about You become what we know of You.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: A life lesson God taught me about motherhood

Motherhood: Learning to Let Go and Let God
A devotional by Erica J. Hill

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your pats straight.”—Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV)

Motherhood looks different in every season. Sometimes, the hardest part is knowing when to hold on and when to let go.

Part of my daily prayers for my children includes thanking God for them and asking Him to give me what I need to mother them where they are. My children range in age from a teenage son to a young adult son, and a married daughter in her late twenties who is now a new mother herself. I am also a new grandmother.

I am learning that motherhood never really gets easier, it just changes. What my teenage son needs is not the same as what my young adult son needs, and what my sons need is different from what my daughter needs.

Motherhood has stretched me in ways I never expected. It is more than cooking meals, offering advice, and praying over them at night. It is learning when to speak, when to listen, and when to step back. It is helping them discover their gifts, guiding them through their emotions, and trusting God with the parts of their lives I cannot control.

I remember when I first became a mother. As a young single mother, I was terrified. Even though I had my own mother there to support me, I still longed for my daughter to grow up in a two-parent home. Then, when I found out I was pregnant with my first son, fear crept in again. I wondered how I would raise a boy into a strong young man. I questioned whether I was enough. I thought I could handle potty training and teaching him manners, but I wondered how I would teach him the things a father traditionally teaches a son.

Looking back, I realize that fear has followed me through many seasons of motherhood. There have been nights when I worried about how I would provide everything my children needed. Even now, I sometimes find myself anxious about their futures or concerned about the decisions they may make.

Recently, I heard the Lord whisper something simple: Let go. This is the story of what happened: I had purchased new beds for my sons, and while my husband was making arrangements for someone to assemble them, my oldest son grew impatient. He had outgrown his bed and wanted to sleep comfortably again. He offered to put the bed together himself, but I initially told him no because I was afraid he would mess it up. It was at that moment that I heard the words: Let go.

It dawned on me that one day he would move into his own place and need to know how to assemble furniture. I realized my “no” was coming from fear, not wisdom. I was trying to protect instead of allowing him to grow. Eventually, he put his bed together—and his brother’s bed as well. In that moment, I realized that sometimes our love holds on too tightly, and growth requires us to loosen our grip.

The Bible gives us many examples of both strong and flawed mothers. Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, trusted God with an unimaginable assignment. Jochebed released Moses into God’s care. Hannah surrendered Samuel after praying for him. Lois and Eunice poured faith into Timothy. Yet other mothers mentioned in the Bible and in our modern day, made choices that led their children in the wrong direction. These stories remind me that motherhood has never required perfection —only faith and trust in God.

I am still learning to trust God with my children. I am learning to release fear and embrace faith, and to remember that my children are not mine to control; they are lives entrusted to me for a season. The Bible reminds me in Psalm 127:3 (NIV), “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.”

Therefore, I continue to pray. I thank God for my children. I ask Him for discernment. I ask Him to help me meet each of them where they are. Motherhood is not about having all the answers. It is about trusting God in every season. And every day, I am learning to let go just a little more.

And maybe that is what motherhood is: learning to trust God with what we love the most, one day at a time.

Let’s Pray:

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of motherhood and for the children You have entrusted to me. Help me to trust You in every season and give me wisdom to meet each child where they are. Teach me when to hold on and when to let go. Remind me that You love my children even more than I do. Help me to walk in faith and not fear as I parent them.

In Jesus’s Name I pray.
Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: When grief overshadows the beauty of springtime

When Everything Blooms and You Are Still Learning to Breathe
A devotional by Patti Schultz, Ed.D.

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”—Isaiah 43:19 (NIV)

There is something almost cruel about spring when you are grieving.

The world does not slow down for your heartache. The dogwoods bloom anyway. The birds sing their first morning songs before you are ready. Children laugh outside your window, and the sky turns a particular shade of blue that only April knows and somehow, all of it hurts. I have stood at that window myself, feeling the strange loneliness of a world that keeps being beautiful when you are not ready for it. If you have felt that ache, you are not alone.

The Scriptures are honest about this tension. The Psalms are full of people who wept beneath a beautiful sky. Even the disciples, after the resurrection, went back to fishing—feeling numb and not yet sure what to do with hope that felt too large to hold. Grief does not follow the calendar. It does not know that it is almost May.

When God declares, “I am doing a new thing!”, He does not promise we will see it easily or feel it quickly. He asks something gentler: “Do you not perceive it?” Sometimes the new thing is so quiet, so fragile and so unlike what we imagined like a small green shoot that we see pressing through hard ground, a moment of unexpected peace, a morning when the ache, just briefly, lifts. Sometimes perceiving is simply not looking away.

Spring is not a command to feel better. It is a promise that God is still working. Life still comes from ground that looked dead all winter. He has not forgotten you in the cold season, and He has not forgotten you now. You are allowed to sit with your grief while also looking at the flowers. You are allowed to cry tears of sadness while watching a beautiful sunrise. You are allowed to let beauty reach you even when you cannot explain how. That is not a contradiction; it is what it means to be human and held at the same time.

God is making a way in your wilderness, even now. You may not see it whole yet. But spring is His gentle reminder that new things are possible. Even here. Even for you.

Let’s Pray: Lord, the world is waking up around me, and I am still so tired. I thank You for the beauty You have placed in this season, even when I do not know how to receive it. Help me not feel guilty for the moments when it reaches me and be gentle with myself in the moments when it doesn’t. You are the God who brings life from what is dormant. You are the One who makes streams in the wasteland. I trust that You see my desert place, and that You are already at work there, even when I cannot feel it. Teach me to perceive the new thing You are doing, however quietly, however slowly. And until I can, hold me through the ones who love me, in the mercy of each ordinary morning, and in the steadfast hope that You are not finished yet. In Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: The true treasure of praying to our Creator

The Heart and Power of Praying to the Almighty God
A devotional by Anne Madison

“And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”
—Luke 11:1 (KJV)

Undoubtedly, the most well-known prayer was prayed by Jesus as recorded in Matthew 6:9-13 (KJV), “After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”

Prayer is not merely a ritual or an obligation for believers; it is the critical tie that connects us directly to God. Through prayer, we acknowledge and declare God’s unique position as our Heavenly Father, and embrace our identity as His children. This correlation reminds us of who we are, to whom we belong, and the authority we wield in prayer.

More than a one-time-a-day event, prayer is an ongoing, continual conversation with the Creator of the universe. As we pray, we open ourselves to God’s presence, trusting Him to lead and guide us and to reveal His will for our lives. Through this dialogue, we are invited not only to know God’s will but also to align ourselves to do it, walking in step with his purposes and direction for us.

Corrie Ten Boom, a notable Christian writer, said: “The wonderful thing about praying is that you leave a world of not being able to do something and enter God’s realm where everything is possible. He specializes in the impossible. Nothing is too great for His almighty power. Nothing is too small for His love.”

Prayer is far more than bringing our laundry list of needs before God. It is the sacred moment when we turn from our human limitations and look to God’s infinite power and grace. In prayer, we acknowledge both our deep need and our complete dependence on Him. Guidance is found in Paul’s words to the church at Philippi as recorded in Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV), “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

A strong prayer life grows through intention and consistent practice. As we seek to deepen our connection with God, a simple call-to-action guide can help focus our prayers. One helpful tool is the acronym P.R.A.Y., which offers a meaningful way to shape our thoughts about prayer.

P = Pray

· Prayer enables us to step away from the busyness of life, providing a moment to slow down and quiet our minds. God says in Psalm 46:10 (KJV), “Be still and know that I am God.”

· Prayer changes our attitude and vision. 2 Kings 6:17 (KJV) says, “And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.”

· Prayer draws us to the heart and presence of God. James 4:8 (CSB) says, “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.”

R = Remember

· Repent. Psalm 51:1-3 (KJV) says, “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.”

· Restoration comes when we pray. Psalm 51:10 (NIRV) says, “God, create a pure heart in me. Give me a new spirit that is faithful to you.”

· Rejoice evermore. 1 Thessalonians 5:17-18 (KJV) says, “Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

A = Action

· Approach the throne of grace with confidence. Hebrews 4:16 (NIV) says, “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

· Align our will to His. “And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. And when he was at the place, he said unto them, “Pray that ye enter not into temptation.” And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, “Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless, not my will, but thine, be done.”

· Abide in Him. John 15:4 (NKJV) says, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.”

Y= Yearn

· Yearn for God. Psalm 42:1-2 (NKJV) says, “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?”

· Yoke up. Matthew 11:27-30 (NKJV) says, “All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

· Yes (say this) to His promises. 2 Corinthians 1:20 (MSG) says, “Whatever God has promised gets stamped with the Yes of Jesus. In him, this is what we preach and pray, the great Amen, God’s Yes and our Yes together, gloriously evident. God affirms us, making us a sure thing in Christ, putting his Yes within us. By his Spirit, he has stamped us with his eternal pledge—a sure beginning of what he is destined to complete.”

Let's Pray:

Father God,

Teach us to pray not only with words, but with hearts that trust You. Teach us to come to You honestly, boldly, and often. Remind us of who You are when we forget. Shape our desires so they reflect yours. Thank You that nothing is too much for us to bring before You, nor too much for You to manage. As we come before your throne, attend unto our prayers for your glory and our good. We truly need Thee every hour. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: When God places you where you belong

When God Places You Where You Belong
A devotional by Terry Overton

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”—Romans 12:2 (ESV)

Have you ever taken an action and then wondered if it was the right thing to do?

You prayed about it, talked it over with loved ones, and trusted God. Later, you found yourself quietly wondering, Did I get this wrong?

This happened to me.

Not long ago, my husband and I moved from the warm, sunny coast to a place more than five-hundred miles inland. Once we decided to make the move, after several weeks of prayer and discussion, we listed our house and found one that seemed to meet our needs and check all the boxes. It was closer to family and on the outskirts of a city full of resources for health, plenty of shopping, restaurants, and services.

But after many cold winters, snowy, and icy days, we began to talk about how much we missed the warmer weather of the coast. With that in mind, I planned a two-week long vacation in the middle of the winter. We could visit our long-time friends, play golf, go on walks, eat in our favorite beachside cafes, and go to the beach. Wondering if moving north had been the right thing to do in this season of life, we discussed the possibility of looking at some of the currently listed homes in our old neighborhood on the coast. The two-week rental seemed perfect, and they allowed us to bring our sweet dog.

What happened next was a clear message from God that He had indeed planned for us to move north and, He put an exclamation on our move during our trip back to the coast. The two-week vacation was shortened to a mere five days. Why? We both wanted to be back in our “own home”. As the verse above states, we should not be conformed to this world or our desires. For me, it meant God was saying, “Do not think you know the path? When guided by Me, do not look back. Only through testing, will you discern My will.”

Just a few days into our dream vacation, my mind was transformed and my appreciation for the wonderful home up north was renewed. When we moved north, it was because He knew there was something better for us in the new location. The short trip underscored His plan for me and helped me to understand to surrender to His plan, I must give up my longing for control. By planning an extended vacation to the coast, I had intended to control outcomes. But God asks us to surrender all outcomes to Him. I was reminded that He plans my steps. He directs my route.

Sometimes God lets us revisit what we thought we missed, not to take us backward, but to show us how much we’ve changed. What once felt like home may not fit who God is shaping us to be now. What once made us long for the past may now feel strangely empty. It’s not because it was wrong, but because it belonged to a different time.

When we returned to our current home, I felt blessed beyond belief. It was God’s plan for us to move here. This was home. I no longer had doubts about His plan. I feel His purposeful presence here. The only way I can discern His plans and transform my own understanding is to be faithful, let go of control, and place everything in His hands.

My visit to the coast confirmed that God had already placed us exactly where we belonged. What once seemed uncertain became a powerful reminder that God sometimes allows us to revisit old places to show us how He has transformed our hearts and redirected our lives.

Let’s Pray:

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for providing tests of faith that provide true understanding of Your will. Forgive me for wanting to control the outcomes You have already set in motion for me. Help me to stay close to You and strive to know Your path for me.

In Jesus’s name I pray.

Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: How to trust God's timing in every season

More than Frost on the Roof
A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
—Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV)

As I write this devotional, the weather forecasters are predicting a bad winter storm to cover the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Weather models from across the world show possible patterns that the storm may follow. As I listen to the urgency in the voices of news reporters, I look outside and see frost on the roof.

Growing up in Virginia, my family was familiar with four distinct seasons. When we moved to South Carolina, we learned that there are basically two temperatures for the Lowcountry. Warm and hot. Yes, sometimes there are unusual temperature drops, as well as the occasional snow and ice storm. Those occurrences happen every few years.

One way I gauge the temperature during winter is by checking the roofs of neighborhood homes. Each morning, I look to see if there is frost or ice covering the tops of the houses. I also look at vehicles. If there is frost or ice covering the vehicle, I know that the morning is freezing cold.

Today, the roofs and cars are covered in ice. There is more than a light covering of frost. Checking the weather app on my phone, I see the temperatures are supposed to be in the 60s later today. This morning, the temperature was 27 degrees. There will be a dramatic change as the day progresses. Yet, I should not be surprised at the weather. Scripture shares that there is a time for everything. There is a season for every activity. This morning, people will wear coats, hats, and clothes. This afternoon, we’ll change to short sleeves. The coats will be hung back in the closet.

Sometimes, we question God’s timing. We pray and beg for answers. We cry, lament, and wonder why our prayers are not immediately answered. But our prayers are answered. Those requests are heard by God and answered in His perfect timing. People in church circles say that God may not come when you want Him to but He is never late. He is always on time. During my breast cancer diagnosis and treatment almost 21 years ago, I was comforted by the people God placed in my life to remind me of His presence and love. New friendships were formed with my doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. Those relationships continue years later through conversations, cards, letters, and emails. God provided answers to prayers by sending people who would understand my cancer journey.

As the sun rises in our neighborhood, I see evidence of the air reaching warmer temperatures. Small areas of frost and ice on the roofs and cars begin melting. A fog rolls in, and sunshine peeks through the cloudy sky. Birds are awake and visiting the feeders. Buses are picking up children to transport them to school. Folks are walking their dogs. Neighbors are waving hello to each other. Gloves and scarves are being removed as the temperatures warm.

Yes, there is more than frost on the roof. There is evidence of God’s creations and His glory. I pause and thank God for this warm home and for answered prayers. I thank God for His answers in His timing. Tomorrow may bring another weather change. But I’ll be ready. I’ll start the day by giving thanks to God.

Let’s Pray:

Dear God,

We give thanks for the changes that the seasons bring to the world. Help us to remember that your timing is always perfect and that You have the best plans for our life. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: God's mercies and faithfulness in our life

Between These Walls

A devotional by Colleen C. Howard

“For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.”––Psalm 100:5 (NIV)

Years ago, while house-hunting, my husband and I walked into a new house that had never been occupied.

We’d seen multiple listings and expected this one to disappoint like the others. As I lingered in its not-quite-finished rooms, a distinct feeling hovered over me. This felt more than just another listing. It was meant to be our home.

Somehow, I knew our teens would become adults between these walls, and we would grow older. Life would happen here. Sorrows and sadness, laughter and love, and the seemingly ordinary days that sometimes take your breath away would wash over our hearts and move us forward in life. God gave me a tiny glimpse of the future, and I was certain it would occur in this home.

Thirty years ago, we moved into this brand-new house, and it became our home. But in 2025, the time to say goodbye was knocking at the door of our hearts. We had to answer these important questions:

What will we leave behind?
A house that served us well. It survived the desert heat, winds, and monsoon rains. Its walls, roof, and foundation are still in good condition despite the passage of time. But when we step out, we’ll leave behind our home and a piece of ourselves.

What will we take with us? Memories. Between these walls, there were celebrations—birthday parties, graduations, and anniversaries. Loved ones were lost while we lived here, and we mourned. Five grandchildren were loved, prayed for, and rocked to sleep in our arms. Five generations of our family have graced this house with their presence and their precious memories will remain in our hearts forever.

How will we say goodbye? With sadness and fondness. God saw us through victories and defeats, anger and reconciliation, and a multitude of unexpected events. Each moment we’ve spent here has reminded us that we’re part of God’s family, and His faithfulness is never-ending. Our hearts overflow with gratitude for the grace, comfort and mercies we’ve received from our Savior (Jesus Christ) while living between these walls.

We’re three decades older now. Our children are grown and our grandchildren are teens and young adults. When our moving day arrived, we said a heartfelt “Goodbye” to this home that served us well and a hearty “Hello” to the new adventures God has planned for us. Praise be to God, who is always faithful, good, and His love is never ending.

Let’s Pray:

Dear God,

Thank You for your faithfulness to us. We move through time and seasons seamlessly without giving it much thought. Help us to navigate our days with grace and heighten our awareness of your presence in our lives. Help us to notice the signs of shifting seasons and prepare us for the changes to come. As seasons come and go, we will turn to you our Lord and Savior. Praise be to God. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.

Devotionals for the Heart: When it is time to listen to God and pray to Him

Time to Listen

A devotional by Melissa Henderson

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.”
—Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)

Throughout the year, my email inbox is filled with ways to cultivate a relationship with God. The ideas include but are not limited to reading the Bible in a year, studying devotions for the weary, notes on ways to find joy in life, educational information about beginning healthy eating programs, and advice on how to “start over” in various parts of daily routines. These all flood my computer.

I appreciate the guidance and wisdom of people, but I’ve made my choice. I’ve decided to be still and make time to listen to God. As a writer, I need to check emails and phone messages several times each day. When I start my day by thanking God for His blessings, I find comfort and peace. When I start my day by reaching for the phone or sitting in front of the computer and scrolling instead of focusing on God, I’ve noticed how my body reacts in different ways.

Sharing time with God first thing every day before I touch technology brings me peace and comfort. Does that mean I won’t have troubles during the day? No. God has told us that we will experience trials and suffering. But we can face those troublesome times knowing that we are not alone. God is always with us.

I have a note taped to my computer that says, “PRAY FIRST”. That note reminds me that in all areas of my life, I should go to God first. There is a different outcome when I try to handle things on my own. However, when I seek God first before trying to figure everything out by myself, I find answers and peace.

Noises of the day can try to overshadow what God intends for my life. I must be intentional in how I share time with God. Those moments with the Lord bring refreshment and renewal. When we read the Bible, we can see that Jesus Christ took time to listen to His Father (God). Often, Jesus would go away from the crowds to pray. Other times, He prayed aloud while people listened. Both examples show that Jesus knew the importance of listening to God. From retreating to a mountainside to be alone with His Father or sharing God’s message to a crowd on a hillside, Jesus listened.

Taking the time to listen to God can deepen our relationship with the Father. As we pause, pray, and listen for His Word, we are showing respect, honor, and love for God. In those quiet moments of listening, we may find answers to prayers. When we commit ourselves to God, we can rest in His promises.

In my daily prayers, I ask God for wisdom, discernment, and revelation. I wait and listen. God may provide answers quickly, or God’s response may come at another time. Either way, as I take time to listen, I rest in knowing I am not alone.

As I write this message, the house is quiet. Pausing, I listen. God speaks through nature. The rain tapping on the roof creates a beautiful melody. The cardinals, chick-a-dees, finches, and downy woodpeckers sing while visiting the bird feeders. A neighbor rides by in their vehicle. The sound of the car engine leaves as quickly as it came. Today is a quiet day in this neighborhood.

After Winter Break, school resumes. People who have day jobs will travel to work in the morning. Life will become busy for many people. I pray that in the midst of busyness and daily activities, may we remember to take time to listen to God. Start the day with prayer. Pray throughout the day. End the day with prayer. Those simple acts can bring us closer to God.

Let’s Pray:
Father God, we give thanks for the opportunity to be still and listen for Your messages. Thank You for the sounds of nature and the beauty of creation. Please help us to remember to listen and rest in Your promises. We ask for wisdom, discernment, and revelation in every situation. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Heather Jeffery is a Christian author, mentor, and certified mental health coach specializing in emotional and spiritual abuse recovery.

Her mission is to empower women with Biblical truth and practical tools to navigate life’s most confusing and painful circumstances. Heather’s passion for this work stems from her own experience of walking through a progressively destructive marriage and divorce, where she discovered the healing power of God’s Word. Today, she helps women set healthy boundaries and tune into the guidance of the Holy Spirit, offering hope and clarity in the midst of chaos.

Heather believes every story matters and has a purpose, just as the stories we read about in the Bible. In her mentoring and coaching, she weaves together her personal journey with the stories of women in Scripture, uncovering deeper insights below the surface that traditional teaching often glosses over. Her approach is both compassionate and practical, equipping women to reclaim their identity and live in freedom.

Heather lives in Maryland with her two teenage daughters, where she works as a physical therapist. She loves spending time outdoors, especially near and on the water, where she finds reminders of God’s faithfulness in the beauty of His creation. She believes God’s Creation has messages for all of us if we take time to look, whether it be the fluttering butterfly that happens to cross your path signifying God sees you or the twinkling of the sunrise as a reminder of God’s unending faithfulness.

She is most at peace floating in a kayak taking in the sights and sounds around her as she spends time reflecting on God’s goodness.
