Devotionals for the Heart: FLAW

I’m FLAWed
A devotional by Paula Moldenhauer

Maybe you’ve conquered this completely. I hope so. But I gotta admit it’s hard to get through a day without noticing a flaw. In my appearance. In my behavior. In my work. It used to get me really down, recovering perfectionist that I am.

Most of us struggle with what to do when we see our flaws or the flaws of someone else.

Recently, during a prayer time with some dear friends, God showed us His perspective on flaws. He reminded us that His blood has cleansed every imperfection, and we stand before Him as blameless. When He looks at us, He sees the person He created us to be. He sees the new creation we are in Him. It’s like 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” God sees a precious work of His very own hands, a work He knit together in our mother's womb. If you don’t believe that, hang out for a while in Psalm 139.

Sure. God knows we struggle with faults. The psalmist says God knows we are “but dust.” But He isn’t wringing His hands in despair when He sees our flaws. He already executed His perfect plan. He saved us, made us blameless in His sight, and is determined to change us from the inside out. He who started a good work in us will be faithful to complete it (Philippians 1:6). He works all things for our good to make us more and more like Jesus (Romans 8:28–29).

God is creative. He wanted to drive the point home, so during our prayer time, He gave my friends and me an acronym for FLAW:

Free to

Live

As

Worthy

I’ve had quite a journey learning to accept my flawed self. But if God is not freaking out about our imperfections, why do we? Our flaws don’t have to bring shame and self-judgment. They don’t have to lead to ugly, unhealthy thinking about ourselves.

How about a paradigm change?

The next time you are overcome with one of your flaws, try God's way of thinking.

Even with that imperfections, you are Free to Live As Worthy!

Stop and praise God for the work of the cross, the blood that changed you and made you righteous, redeemed, and holy. Thank Him for creating you and praise Him that everything He creates is good! Accept yourself without pretending the flaw isn’t there or judging yourself for its existence. Stand up straight in your identity of a worthy child, beloved of God. Turn your focus to praise for the change God is doing within you as He remakes you to be more like Jesus. Then from a mindset of one who is Free to Live As Worthy (even with a flaw or two, or two hundred), ask Him to empower you to overcome.

Let's Pray: Jesus, the next time that I recognize a flaw in myself or others, remind me that because of Your blood we are Free to Live As Worthy. Instead of judgment, help me receive Your grace, mercy, and unconditional love. Then help me extend the grace You’ve given me.

Read with Audra Blog Tour featuring Karin Beery and her debut book

Welcome to my blog's stop on Karin Beery's first "Read with Audra" blog tour!

Karin is a new author who is putting her first published book out there into the world. The book is called Summer Plans and Other Disasters.

Here's my review, short and sweet: I thought that this book was pretty amazing for a new author! The characters are likable, the plot is intriguing and the dialogue is fresh. I think that you should give this book a chance!

~*~
About the Book:
Elementary school music teacher Callie Stevens thinks she’s finally figured out God’s plan for her life—she even made a list to keep her on track.

Moving in with her brother and reconnecting with her ex-boyfriend are at the top of the list. What’s not on the list is running into her childhood crush, Ryan. God wanted her to connect with Kyle, right?

Trying to figure out God’s plan is hard enough. But a dating-averse older brother, the young blonde who adores him, a pregnant best friend, and Callie’s continual mishaps make her wonder whether her best-laid plans were truly God-inspired.

Now available from Elk Lake Publishing!

~*~
About the Author:

Karin wrote her first novel in 2007 to cope with her husband’s cancer diagnosis (no worries – he’s cancer free now!). With the support and encouragement of her family, she submitted that manuscript. That particular manuscript has not been published yet, but Summer Plans and Other Disasters, her first published book, releases in September 2018.

Karin writes contemporary and speculative fiction stories with a healthy dose of romance, but she’s also expanded her repertoire: she writes feature stories for the local paper, copy material for businesses, and blog posts for herself and others. She even edits (offering copy editing, fiction editing, and critiques through Write Now Editing Services) and teaches (she’s the Substantive Fiction Editing instructor for the PEN Institute and can be found around the country teaching writing and editing courses at conferences and at her local college).

When Karin’s not reading, writing, or editing, she enjoys cooking and baking. She plays the piano and sings (the key of E, please). She kayaks with her husband in the summer, watches football in the fall (Go Blue!), and enjoys Christmas lights all winter long.

Shy but extroverted, Karin adores her nieces and nephew and loves spending time with her family. Learn more about Karin at karinbeery.com.

Devotionals for the Heart: Absolutes

The Absolutes
A devotional by Nanci Rubin

"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever."
~Hebrews 13:8 (KJV)

Our world is in such turmoil, and our youth struggle to find their place in an ever-changing environment. Teens look to their peers for acceptance as parental influence becomes almost nil. Don’t we all look for acceptance? The youth desire to be loved. They need to know God loves them.

I have worked with kids all my life. I was Head Nurse in the Health Center at our local university and when I was nursing I worked in pediatrics. I’ve taught Sunday School to middle-grade kids. I love children, and I’ve seen first-hand how easily they can get into trouble. We’re all familiar with the cute toddler who reaches out to grab something, stops, looks you in the face waiting for your response. A “no-no” will be uttered, and those tiny hands quickly grab the desired object and drop it almost at the same time. They push you beyond your limits. The urge to rebel doesn’t seem to go away, even into adulthood there remains some residual. We appear to like the forbidden thing.

I remember when I worked at the college some of our freshman students would come totally unprepared for the liberal world-view, and the freedom associated with being away from home for the first time. It was such a culture shock that some couldn’t handle it, and they ended up leaving school.
We had a sweet young lady named, Roxanne. She was so naïve and easily upset that she refused to sleep in the dorm and received permission from the Dean to sleep in the infirmary. She did that her entire freshman year. It wasn’t long into her sophomore year that Roxanne embraced college life with both arms. I watched her bloom where God planted her. I’m glad we took the time to nurture Roxanne, she needed the extra care. She was worth it. However, there is a universal mantra they all relate to. It is, “I hurt, and I’ll do anything to stop the pain.” And they try whether it’s by drugs, promiscuity, or rebellion. They call out for help. But are we listening?

Our young people need validation. They need to know how special they are, not only to their parents, friends, and relatives but to God. He created us in His image, so we’re starting off ahead in the game of life.

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."~Genesis 1:27 (KJV)

God knows us before we’re born. He has chosen us and selected our DNA before we were a glimmer in our mother’s eye. I like that. And I’m awed by it.

"Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations."~Jeremiah 1:5 (KJV)

I would like every young person, old person and all in between to realize God didn’t make a mistake when he formed you. He made each of us unique and special. No one on planet earth has your fingerprint, your thoughts, memories, and your personal quirks. God didn’t make junk when he made you!

There is a gentleman in our Life Group from church who’d seemed troubled for several weeks but never mentioned anything nor asked for prayer. One evening, he finally asked for prayer. He’d begun to doubt what God had for him, and he felt he couldn’t be of use to God any longer because of his age. So many seniors believe their age can hinder their work for God. I am reminded that Sampson did greater feats at the end of his life than in the beginning. The patriarchs of the Bible were mighty men in the later years of their lives. God is not done with you yet. He is no respecter of persons.

"For God shows no partiality [no arbitrary favoritism; with Him one person is not more important than another]." ~Romans 2:11 (AMP)

No matter your age or station in life, you are God’s creation, and He loves you. He has a purpose and a plan for each life. Teach your children whom they can believe and count on. God will lead them through life. These are the absolutes they can hold onto. Be blessed and listen to His still small voice that says:

"Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen." ~Matthew 28:20 (KJV)

My Review of Before I Go Bible study:

This Before I Go online Bible study is amazing! The author, Sarah Koontz, does a delightful job of showing what it means to follow Jesus and take His Truth into the world. She carefully and effectively explains His Mission and shows how it relates to our purpose in life.

Powerful points are found throughout this study. Early on (page 8), Sarah writes,
“Knowing the character of God helps us believe in the promises of God.”

She also draws inspiration from movies to help make her points clear such as when she shared a reference to Miss Congeniality and emphasized how the beauty contestants' go-to answer was world peace. Regarding this popular desire for world peace, Sarah says, “Social change will not bring peace. Economic stability will not bring peace. Absence of war will not bring peace.”

Sarah pulls quotes from famous pastors like
Dr. Warren Wiersbe, who said, “People in the world walk by sight and depend on externals, but Christians walk by faith and depend on eternals.”

This entire study is perfectly punctuated with powerful words from the author herself, The Holy Bible and popular thought leaders from our modern times. Most of all, it's short and very easy to navigate! Three weeks will fly by when you start this study and at the end, you will not only be encouraged but refreshed by the gems within these 32 pages.

Toward the end of the study on page 31, Sarah wraps up her main points with a quote from American actor Kirk Cameron. He said, “If you had the cure to cancer, wouldn’t you share it? You have the cure to death, get out there and share it!”

Don't delay. Sign-up here to receive your copy of Before I Go!

Note: There is an audio version available too! See the promo photo for it below.

Falling for Books: Misty's book

Ever Been Struck by Lightning?
A personal essay by Misty M. Beller

One of the fun things about being a writer is the crazy topics I get to research. Without giving away too much of the story, part of my research for This Courageous Journey included uncovering what happens when lightning strikes a person. It turns out anything can happen!

Surprisingly, about nine out of ten people struck by lightning live to tell their story. Each person’s experience seems to be different—some are knocked unconscious, while others are horribly aware of everything happening. One person who was struck said it seemed as if time slowed to a crawl and a white haze surrounded him like a bubble, as excruciating pain shot through him.

People usually try to determine the path the lightning traveled through them, based on where burn marks appear on both skin and clothing, but sometimes that can be difficult if jewelry or coins were touching the body. Survivors might suffer a variety of short- and long-term effects, including—but not limited to—cardiac arrest, confusion, seizures, dizziness, muscle aches, deafness, headaches, memory deficits, distractibility, personality changes, and chronic pain, among others. That may sound like an awful list, but it does beat the alternative!

As I considered the possible effects of a lightning strike when I was writing This Courageous Journey, I was reminded once again how magnificent God’s creation is. Both the incredible power contained in one streak of lightning, and the beautiful inner workings of the bodies He created for us. As the Psalmist said, we are “fearfully and wonderfully made!”

~*~
Book blurb for This Courageous Journey:

As the fifth daughter in a family of nine, Noelle Grant spent her life striving to be unique. Her love of telling stories helps define her goal—to be known around the country as one of the top news correspondents of her time. And what better way to uncover sensational tales than to travel through the mountain wilderness to visit her brother?

The trip comes together perfectly as she journeys with family friends who will be settling in the same area. Her first inkling that things may not be as perfect as she’d imagined shows up in the form of the mountain man hired as their guide for the final leg of the journey.

When Daniel Abrams agrees to guide the small group of easterners along his usual route northward to the Canadian mountains, his gut tells him he’s making a terrible decision. But if he doesn’t take them, who will? The crew’s leader refuses to consider turning back. As they start out, Daniel can’t help but notice the woman traveling under the care of her friends. Though she appears too genteel to last long in these mountains, she soon reveals a strength that draws him more than he should allow.

When the dangers of this wilderness become more than the group bargained for, Noelle must choose to delay her trip northward or proceed alone with the man she’s come to trust against all reason. She never dreams her decision will place her—and the man she loves—in a situation more hazardous than any story her imagination could conjure.

Devotionals for the Heart: Be Content

Being Content
A devotional by Sara L. Foust

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” –Romans 8:28 (KJV)

This is one of my favorite verses. I love its promise that God is working for my good at all times. It has been comforting to me in times of grief, stress, and fear. It has been a reminder when I’m struggling that God’s plan is good for me.

I was saved when I was nineteen and began attending church on a regular basis. All of a sudden, as a new Christian, as a young adult, as a still-trying-to-figure-this-life-thing-out woman, I was exposed to preaching and teaching like I’d never heard before, with a set of unspoken “church” rules I had to absorb unconsciously. A new abundance of information to take in and process.

I’ve come to realize something over the last few days, though. A new spiritual understanding I had not seen before. One of these new lessons, I believe I have somehow misunderstood. You see, I awoke today with the realization that I believed God didn’t care if I was happy or not. Wow. How did I come to believe this?

Through no fault of anyone but myself, I’ve taken scripture and preaching out of context. I’ve taken the lesson that we should learn to be content in all situations (Philippians 4:11-13) to mean that no matter how unhappy we are, we shouldn’t allow ourselves to be unhappy. That we should always put on a brave face and learn to smile through the midst of every struggle. That every bad thing in our lives is part of God’s plan, just like the good.

But that doesn’t make complete sense. We have free will (Galatians 5:13) and that means we have the ability to make wrong decisions, ones that affect the people around us too. If everyone were to follow God’s leading for every decision, every single moment of every single day, then I could rest assured that everything that happened to me was, in fact, for my good. But, as imperfect, sinful human beings, this isn’t possible. Things happen, people make bad decisions. Does that mean God wanted those decisions to negatively affect me? No, I don’t believe so.

Rather, what I think God wants me to see is that He is always there for me during the struggles. That His plan is for my good, and when things don’t go according to His plan, He hurts right along with me. And the knowledge that He is with me, on my side (on your side), is where we can find the joy amid the pain.

Now, don’t get me wrong, God doesn’t want us to sin in order to find “happiness.” Our true happiness lies in following His will for us. In doing our best to follow His path, despite what is going on around us. But God does want us to have a fulfilled, enjoyable life (John 10:10), not one filled with misery where we pretend everything is okay because we are supposed to. No, He wants joy for us. He does care if we find it.

I’ve come to see that when a negative, sin-filled situation or decision someone else has made is affecting me negatively, it is okay to remove myself from that situation. It is okay to separate myself in order to try to relocate God’s path. And pray for the person or situation, from a distance in order to protect my spiritual morality. Whether it be a best friend, a family member, or a church, if we have the sense that the trend is leading away from God’s will for our lives, it is our duty to resist and go our way—the way God is planning, with good roads in our future (James 4:17-21).

Guest Post from Cara:

Delayed Justice was a hard story to write.

I’d known from Beyond Justice that Jaime had a hard story, but I wasn’t sure exactly what it was. She tried to hide from her past. She tried hard, but in the end, it slowly spilled out. A young girl wounded deeply by someone who should protect her. And now as a professional young woman, Jaime is still fighting the shadows.

She believes she’s okay, or as okay as she’ll ever be.

Instead, she has to learn that there’s so much more waiting for her. Freedom from the chains of a past she didn’t choose. A love that will never end. And a God who has always loved her even when she questions His existence because of her past.

I think we’ve all lived that. There’s a place in our hearts that seems beyond His reach. For some of us, it’s a barrier to knowing Him. To others of us, it makes us question what we thought we knew about God. And for others of us, it presses us deeply into Him. Jaime’s book, Delayed Justice, explores this space. It's the space where some days we scream at the heavens "Where are you, God?" And the days we just curl into ourselves because life is too hard.

And in that space of shadow and light, God ultimately shines brightest. This is a truth that is slowly revealed through friends and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

My Review of Delayed Justice:

This book was one wild, thought-provoking, page-turning emotional rollercoaster!

The characters were well-developed, multilayered and filled with their own issues that moved the plot forward.

As an author, Cara Putman knows how to grip the reader by the collar from the start and propel them forward through the story in a way that makes the reader feel like they are in the story and experiencing the scenes with the characters.

Delayed Justice tackles sensitive topics with tact and finesse. The ending shocked me but did not take away from the previous chapters because the entire story was well-written.

This is a good book for anyone who is seeking justice in their own real-life story.

*Celebrate Lit provided me (Alexis A. Goring) with a complimentary copy of "Delayed Justice". My opinions in this book review are my own.
