When Love Inspires: Brandy's story

When Love Inspires: Brandy's story

Back in Colorado, during my book launch party for The Last Summer, one of the ladies there said to me something to the effect of "You must have such a romantic life to write romance!"

I choked back a laugh, cleared my throat, and set the record straight. Maybe it’s a misconception that romance writers are living lives of roses and passionate getaways and love notes left for you on your pillow. I’ve been married for nearly 16 years—and while there are those things I just mentioned at times (well, maybe love texts and emojis rather than notes!)—my days are probably similar to everyone else’s in my stage of life.

My “book boyfriend” is always going to be Outlander’s Jamie Fraser. My husband Jeff likes to remind me that Jamie’s a fictional character, created by a woman, and that’s why women love him. Because he’s all the things women want. (I have rebuttal arguments but we won’t go into that!) I think we see a lot of this in romance, right? Billionaire boyfriends falling in love with the housekeeper (or the nanny! Always the nanny for some reason!). Extraordinary athletes coming home and falling in love with the girl next door. Princes falling for commoners. I read these stories too! Happily Ever After comes and you sigh with happiness, because you just know that the couple will always be crazy about each other, never have financial squabbles, and never go through anything that might take them to marriage counseling.

Then there’s real life.

I love Valentine’s Day, but not because of expensive dinners or outrageous flower arrangements. Because romance is in the little things. And love extends to family and friends, not just couples. I write romance because there’s something real and special about finding your person, even if he’s not a Scottish highlander who’s perfect (cough!). And that’s for everyone, whether they’ve found that person yet or not.

In my new book After the Rain, the main character is a girl going through depression. The truth is that a relationship doesn’t solve that. Many of us have been there. I’ve been there. In the right relationship, your partner comes alongside you in the dark times, and you go on the journey together. And finding that person is, to me, worth writing about!

Debra Hart is moving on. Maybe. Hopefully. One day.

As a radio show host, Debra spends her mornings as Miss Lonely Heart on air, empathizing with all the broken hearts in the Denver metro area. She spends her evenings watching old musicals and trying not to think about the guy who broke up with her and subsequently fell in love with one of her best friends. Alone in a new city, Debra questions where she belongs and who she is now.

When she stumbles into the indie music scene, Debra meets singer Ben Price. Rock star appeal, with a day job as a worship pastor, Ben is everything Debra wants to avoid. But he’s determined to be her friend, and it so happens she could really use one. Because try as she might, nothing seems to erase the anger and betrayal she feels.

It’s time for a new dream. But how does she start over when she doesn’t even know what she wants anymore?

Christmas on My Heart: Mistletoe Kiss by Andrea Boyd

Personal Essay by Andrea Boyd about her book, Mistletoe Kiss:

The inspiration for Mistletoe Kiss came to me two Decembers ago when I was taking the two-hour drive to see my oldest grandson. It all started with a radio announcement. A Guinness World record had been broken
–  the most people to kiss under the mistletoe at once. Over eight-hundred couples visited Six Flags in various locations to help break the record.

I began to imagine all the couple types. Long-time married couples, dating couples, strangers who met for the first time at the park that day and decided to go for it...but the one that flowed rapid-fire through my brain was of two people who decided to go as friends but ended up wanting more after that one kiss.

As soon as I got to my destination, I started doing research. The participants were provided the mistletoe. One of them had to hold it above their heads as they kissed. They had to hold the kiss for the count of ten. Oh boy! The ideas were flowing faster than I can write. Chase and his friend, Rachel, came to life.

Chase has been in love with Rachel since they first met in grade school. She has him firmly planted in the friend zone and he’s too afraid of losing what they have to ask for more. He is one of five in the Spencer family. As I wrote, I fell in love with all of them and their stories may come to life in future books, but don’t expect them to have it as easy as Chase.

Rachel is the one to come up with the scheme of them kissing under the mistletoe. She has always dreamed of breaking a world record and she and Chase had made it their goal to visit every amusement park in America. This little trip to Six Flags would serve a two-fold purpose. And the kiss, that would be a piece of cake—no different than when they played spin-the-bottle in sixth grade. A peck on the lips and it’d be over. Except she missed the part where they had to hold it for ten seconds. Oops!

I wanted to write the type of story I like to read at Christmastime—sweet, heartwarming, and full of nostalgia. There’s not too much conflict in this one. My hope is that it is in keeping with the Christmas spirit and leaves the reader with a smile.

Calling All Couples!
Sign up now. Help us set a record!
On December 10 at 5:00 pm, we need your help setting a Guinness World Record for the most couples kissing under the mistletoe!

Chase Spencer had been firmly planted in the friend-zone ever since he first met Rachel Anthony back when they were in grade school and it looks like that’s where he’s destined to remain. And her latest scheme is bound to be torture. She wants them to help break the Guinness World Record for the most couples kissing under the mistletoe at one time. How should he handle this? Should the kiss be a chaste, friendly kiss like she envisions? Or should he do it in a way that leaves Rachel without a doubt that he wants to be more than friends?

It had always been Rachel’s dream to break a world record, and who better to do it with than her best friend Chase? And it wasn’t as if they hadn’t kissed before—sixth grade, spin-the-bottle at Iona Puckett’s party—a peck of the lips and it’d be over. Except she missed the part where they had to hold the kiss for ten seconds. And no one warned her of how she would feel afterwards—confused and longing for more. How can she convince Chase to change her status from friend to girlfriend?

Christmas on My Heart: A Picture Perfect Christmas by Candee Fick

What Inspired Me to Write A Picture Perfect Christmas
A personal essay by Candee Fick

I recently took my first plunge into independent publishing as a novelist with the release of A Picture Perfect Christmas, the fourth book in The Wardrobe series. It seems like such a simple thing, but it wasn't. Here's the rest of the story...

Focus On Love, the second book in the series, released in February and reached well over 100 reviews within the first week. However, one common theme in many of those reviews—in addition to direct emails and responses on social media—was that readers couldn't wait to read what happened next in order to find out if and how Liz reunited with her parents.

For the first time, many readers were left disappointed by one of my stories. Ouch.

But in writing Focus On Love, my intention had been to contrast religion's list of rules with a true relationship based on love and I'd used the "villain" of my heroine's father to underscore that conflict. I'd tried to drop enough breadcrumbs to leave open the possibility of a future reconciliation but still kept the immediate focus of the story on Liz's internal journey to find security in God even when life didn't turn out like she'd hoped. A few readers appreciated that message...but most wanted more.

Even worse? I'd already written Book 3 of the series (Sing a New Song featuring a secondary character, Gloria) and there wasn't a natural way to weave an additional storyline into that plot without it feeling forced or obviously tacked-on. So, if I was to give readers what they wanted, they'd have to wait for Book 4 and who knew when that book would get published.

But speaking of waiting, since the first books of the series are with a small press, readers already had to wait for over a year between books. Which was long enough for readers to lose interest in the overall storyline and even forget about me in the process. Trying to maintain marketing momentum over those gaps was difficult at best and didn't bode well for building a career as an author.

Disappointed readers and a long publication gap had me praying for a solution. Then, along came inspiration in the form of a writing group chat about Christmas stories and how they should include seasonal elements, love, a Scrooge character, and a miracle.

Hmm. I already had a Scrooge character in the form of Liz's dad... And my lovebirds would need a miracle to get him to their wedding... And I'd had my own fairytale Christmas wedding to inspire the descriptions. What if I wrote a Christmas story to wrap up all those loose ends and what if I published it this year to plug that gap before Book 3 released next May?

However, just because I had a great idea, didn't mean the logistics would work. One of the first things I did was sketch out a production schedule with personal deadlines to meet. But I also needed to check with my publisher to make sure they were open to the idea of me publishing a book that would cross-promote with the titles I had under contract with them. I also wanted their input on how to number the series. Why? Because chronologically in story world time, next May's release was Book 3 and A Picture Perfect Christmas would occur almost six months later...making it Book 4 even though it would be out before Sing a New Song was even up for pre-order.

Thankfully, my publisher was more than happy with my idea and with their green light approval, I dove into the whole process of seeing a new book from the nugget of an idea to publication in under six months.

What inspired me to write this story? One part was readers asking for more. One part was overall marketing frustrations. And a whole bunch of God-inspiration that led me to find the solution with enough time on the calendar to get it done right.

And the result is A Picture Perfect Christmas.

Cozy Christmas Reads: Susan's story

Joy to the World

A personal essay by Susan M. Baganz

My daughter is what is now known as a “rainbow baby.” A child born after a loss to miscarriage or stillbirth. I didn’t know I was having a girl and in spite of being pregnancy number four and she was ten days late in coming.

Then they announced it was a girl. I seriously was expecting a boy but was elated with this bundle of joy God had given. But he almost took her away as well. A shot given at birth resulted in seizures where she would stop breathing. Rejoicing turned to fear as she was transferred to a Children’s Hospital.

I forgot my Bible in my haste to get to the hospital. But I had my journal and had written the Scripture in there from the last Sunday’s sermon. Psalm 37:4 (a Bible verse) was written in there: “Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart.”

I was able to stay in a room at the hospital to be close to her as they ran all kinds of expensive tests. I prayed for my daughter. I told God: “She belongs to You, Lord. My desire is to keep Joy (her name) but if You decide to take her, I will trust You in that as well. And, Lord, while you’re at it can we leave the hospital on Sunday?”

Joy Lucille will become a teenager this December. We did go home that Sunday and long story short, she is seizure free due to the help of a naturopathic doctor since other doctors refused to treat her because we lacked insurance.

Maybe it’s not unusual then that I put a baby in my Christmas novella, Gabriel’s Gift. Babies are special at any time, but a baby born near Christmas makes the season seem more personal. And every year I remember the sorrow and anxiety of those days battling doctors to spend time with my baby who was 9 pounds in a NICU and kicked off her leads and sent the alarms off.

She’s grown into a lovely young woman. And God gave me the desire of my heart in allowing me to keep my baby with me. Having godly desire isn’t bad and it’s the core of my novella. Gabriel desires Mattie but she’s reluctant. He lays that desire on the altar of God much like I did my daughter. And then He waited in faith for God to work.

Joy’s middle name is after my great grandmother who I adored. Put together her name means “joyful light-bearer.” My hope is that my novella shines the light of God’s love as much as my daughter does. And every day I still need to entrust all my children to God’s care. They have problems and issues that they have to cope with. And as they become more independent I have less influence on their choices. I only hope and pray I’ve invested enough in them to bear fruit and impact the kingdom like my main characters do in their book.

My books, like my kids, have a life of their own and it’s fascinating to watch and see the impact they make in the lives of those who read them. Perhaps it’s for fun, but hopefully the truths buried in the pages will be the way God can get into those dark places He longs to touch and heal.

As Christmas draws near, can Gabriel break down the walls of Matilda's heart to see the wonder of it all? His affection for her blooms as he watches her uncover the greatest gift of all—unconditional love.

Spring into Love: Angela Ruth Strong

Finding Love in My Own Life Story
A personal essay by Angela Ruth Strong

Last night a friend said, “I finished your novel. Talk about autobiographical.”

She’s right. There’s so much of me in Finding Love in Park City that I was afraid if people didn’t like the book, then it meant they wouldn’t like me. So far that hasn’t happened.

My friend asked, “Was it hard putting it into words?”

Enough time had passed since my personal experience with divorce that I’d made peace with the pain, so writing about it didn’t hurt, but I found it eye-opening to see how the story affected others. When my critique partners commented on my character, it gave me new insight into my own life. For example, after “the other woman” in my story made derogatory comments, my first reader said, “Your main character has to know that’s not true.”

Oh. I thought back to my own experience where “the other woman” had said those exact words verbatim. In my head, I’d known it wasn’t true, but the words still hurt my heart as if I believed them. Hearing it considered crazy talk from an outside source was very validating.

Then there was the, “Wow, your main character is really insecure,” which eventually became, “Oh, no wonder she’s insecure!”

Yes, I had these same insecurities, but I had them for a reason. Such a critique made me feel understood. Because this wasn’t a friend trying to reassure me as my friends all had, this was an unbiased opinion of a character my critique partner didn’t know actually existed.

I have to admit, my favorite comment so far has come from my mom. “I’m reading Finding Love in Park City right now, and I really like Sam. He’s such a great hero… Did you base him on Jim?”

Yes, Sam is based on my husband. And he really is a great hero. You guys, my husband puts great heroes to shame. He is the reason I write romance again.

Pictured above: The author (Angela Ruth Strong) and her husband Jim
danced together on their Wedding Day

I want to offer hope that love like this really exists because it’s hard to believe when the person you love is abusing you, and we all know someone who has been through—or is going through—this. Sadly, abuse is often misunderstood, and the church doesn’t always know how to help. I’d like to think my words can make a difference. I’m honored that at least one reviewer has thought so too: “This is the first book to speak so clearly about the effects of verbal abuse on a marriage and family in romantic fiction I've read.”

Back when I was in the midst of my divorce, I went to a prayer room where women prayed over me. They didn’t know anything about me, but one woman said, “This isn’t the end of your story.” She had no idea I was a writer or that I would literally write a happy ending to my tale, but it was the best advice she could have given.

I am grateful for everything I’ve learned. I’m grateful for where I am now. And I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my story with you.

C.J. Lancaster’s job as a tabloid journalist takes her to the Sundance Film Festival to interview an actress. She tries to charm her way past the movie star’s youngest brother-in-law, Sam, and somehow ends up on an “undate” with him. If C.J. were ready to date, the fun-loving veteran would be her first choice, but since she’s still healing from her ex-husband’s affair, she knows it will be safer if she scares her new “friendboy” away.

Sam Lake is intrigued—he’s never had to pursue a woman, and he can’t get C.J. out of his mind. Whether it’s how she likes to eat ice cream in winter or the way she gets his nieces and nephews to gang up on him in a snowball fight, he feels more at home with her than his oversized family. But when his own issues arise, he realizes C.J. might be right about avoiding a relationship with him.

Can the two of them overcome the emotional mountains in their lives, or will they remain a “noncouple” forever?

14 Days of Sweet Stories: Paula's book "The Crux of Honor"

The Best Love Story
A Personal Essay by Paula Mowery for “14 Days of Sweet Stories”

The editor-in-chief at Prism Book Group put out a call to the authors through our private Facebook group for submissions to a series based on The Love Chapter, First Corinthians 13 (in The Holy Bible).

She figured the group of stories would be nice releases for Valentine’s Day. She printed out the passage and basically, the different phrases were up for grabs as to be the theme for the story. I had my eye on one phrase but missed out on that one when another author beat me to it. I decided that I could come up with a story based on the section: “Love does not dishonor.”

God brought to mind my time living in Maryland near the Amish and their honorable ways. This is when my story started to take form. I began with some “what if” questions. What if someone with Amish ties were to bring dishonor to the family? What if the supposed dishonor actually revealed long-concealed lies?

My next thought was about an unexpected pregnancy being the ultimate dishonor in the story. I recalled my time as a devotional leader at our local Pregnancy Crisis Center. Conjuring bitter feelings to portray through my characters wasn’t difficult. When God afforded me the opportunity to serve at the pregnancy center, I was definitely conflicted. These girls had become pregnant, many by accident. As a young woman, I struggled with infertility and harbored ill feelings toward those who found themselves in unexpected pregnancies. But as I got to know these women and heard their stories, I realized I was wrong. What I needed to show them was God’s unconditional love, available to all.

Thus, within the pages of The Crux of Honor, the reader will encounter some Amish parts, as well as a precious Pregnancy Crisis Center, ran by loving Christian women. There are also some medical conditions that reflect research into the Amish community. Of course, a romance buds within those pages of the reunion/second chance type.

Naturally, I enjoyed creating the romance between the heroine and hero. A good love story is still my favorite to read as well as to write. But my ultimate hope is that the reader will encounter an unconditional love available from God, which is the best of all love stories, within the pages of The Crux of Honor.
