Giveaway Contest: Celebrating my blog and debut book's birthday!

Dearest of hearts,

Today is my blog's 7th birthday! It all started with this post on August 2, 2010...and God took it from there! He inspired me with ideas to inspire you ever since.

Over the years, my blog has matured from being a place where I timidly posted videos and links to articles that I read online, to a place where I grew strong and found my voice. Now we do book giveaways, music CD giveaways, author interviews, character interviews, and personal essays. You get to "meet" my favorite authors and read devotionals written by lovely ladies of faith in God like Mary Manners and Laura Thomas! Sometimes you even get treated to viewing pictures that are "Worth 1,000 Words" captured by my photographer friends like Katelyn James and Terri Baskin!

My journey as the founder of this "God is Love" blog grew from its humble beginnings to my becoming a consistent blogger with a voice. Every step and blog post of this journey helped to enrich my life. It's always been my mission to share God's Love for humankind with the world and I am thankful that He led me to establish this blog to accomplish that purpose.

Now here's to YOU my dear blog readers because this blog would not be of benefit if you were not reading it! I've downloaded a free e-card from DaySpring just for you! Here you go:

Thank YOU for ALL the "little things" you do that make a BIG difference! Little things like leaving comments on my blog posts, participating in the giveaway contests, and taking the time to write a note to me personally via e-mail truly have made my day. Your kindness has encouraged my heart. I appreciate you ALL so much!

Another reason to celebrate this August 2017 is that my first (debut) book, Hope in My Heart: A Collection of Heartwarming Stories, was published in August 2013! It's my debut book's 4th birthday! And to celebrate both my blog's birthday and my first book's birthday, I'm hosting a giveaway contest where seven people will have the chance to WIN a copy of Hope in My Heart: A Collection of Heartwarming Stories for their Kindle.

The giveaway starts TODAY (August 2) and it will END on August 27.

So won't you celebrate with me by leaving a comment with your "Happy birthday" wishes and give yourself the chance to WIN this gift of my first book by entering the giveaway contest?

Thankful Thursday: When God Speaks

Thankful Thursday: When God Speaks

Today I place the music video before the written message because I want to show how amazing God is and I believe that song "God Speaking" by Mandisa says it all! I could end my post here but I won't because I have a testimony to share.

Here's the story: I've been in a season of waiting on God for about three years now. I thought my career was taking off when I moved to Montana to take my first big break in Journalism as an Editor and Reporter for a county newspaper. But that did not work out and after a few months of being there, I took a one-way flight home just in time for Christmas Day. The classic song, "I'll Be Home for Christmas" has a brand new, special meaning for me now. I loved the people in Montana--they were so nice and sweet--but I did miss home and am so grateful to be back!

Since returning from my brief stint as a "real" (full-time, salaried) journalist, I've returned to work as a freelance writer for a newspaper and I love it. My heart's passion is the arts and as a freelance writer, my work schedule is flexible so I do have time to work on the creative side of my writing which includes marketing my first book (Hope in My Heart: A Collection of Heartwarming Stories) which was released in Sept. 2013 and also working on my next book project. I'm in a good place creative-wise but not financially as I'm not fully out of the "starving artist" phase of my career.

So today, I felt discouraged and inside my mind I was sinking fast. I felt discouraged because as I said, it's been three years since my last steady job complete with salary and benefits and while I don't envy the people who have to work from 9 to 5 or later, I do miss having stability in my career knowing that no matter what, as long as I am employed by this organization, I will receive a paycheck of an sufficient amount every two weeks. Now while I miss that stability, I do not miss not being at peace and feeling trapped if not suffocated because to me, writing is like breathing and during those years when I tried to fit the 9 to 5 steady job mold, I felt like I could not breathe.

I love the freedom of being a freelance writer but have been praying to God to bless me with more high-paying clients so that my finances will not be an issue. I do have my moments--earlier today as I was driving I told God that I need a steady, reliable job that pays me my worth. But in this season of waiting, I've been experiencing silence from God and I often express my concern to trusted people that God isn't speaking to me. "He's being SILENT," has been my classic, most repeated line for the past three years.

Now here's the part that leads into the song I just shared with you: Just today, like a literal hour ago, when checking my e-mail, I read a message from one of the people who regularly critiques my creative stories. She was impressed by my most recent story submission and felt the need to write a letter to me at the end of her critique notes she made on the word processor document. This critique partner who we'll refer to as R, told me that she thinks I'm a natural writer, an artist and that God's given me this talent for a reason. At the end of her letter, she told me to not give up, to keep writing because God has big plans for me. R's words helped me so much because it lifted me up out of the discouragement I was facing earlier today--she threw a metaphorical lifesaver over me just in time to keep me from drowning in the sea of negativity I was sinking into--and I knew after sharing R's encouraging words with a true friend, that God was speaking.

"I don't EVER want to hear you SAY that GOD is NOT speaking to you after this, Alexis," the friend told me after I read the e-mail from R.

Here's what I've learned from this experience: When God speaks, you need to listen. When God speaks, you may be caught by surprise but delighted. When God speaks, you have peace.

So this Thursday, I am so thankful for God speaking to me through R and encouraging me on my journey/pursuit of a career as a creative professional. I want to encourage you in your life journey too. Know that wherever you are headed, God is already there. The Bible says He knows "the end from the beginning" (Isaiah 46:10) and He is waiting for you to trust Him.

So if you're in a season of waiting like I am experiencing, I want to encourage you to continue trusting in God. Keep the faith. The wait is worth it!

Love,

Alexis

Thankful Thursday: Double Blessings

It’s Thursday and I’m thankful for double blessings sent to me by God!

"Now what are these double blessings?" You may ask me. I will happily tell you!

Recently, I was hired for a part-time, paid position at a newspaper to manage the company's social media and edit/post articles to their website. I love my new job! It fits right within my skill set so it comes naturally to me. They say when you do what you love you never work a day in your life and with this new assignment, that certainly is the case!

"Okay so that’s one MAJOR blessing from God! What’s the other?" You may ask. Again, I’ll happily share the good news!

Here’s the second blessing: Yesterday, I was featured on a student-driven TV news show called Today from Bowie! The talk show host, Paige, interviewed me about my work as a journalist and the release of my first book, Hope in My Heart: A Collection of Heartwarming Stories. The student production team made me feel at ease despite all the bright lights and cameras pointed at me and the Communications Professor, Dr. Otis Thomas, gave me advice for the broadcast. “The whole time for the duration of the interview, until we stop filming, just look at Paige,” he said. Professor Thomas did not want me to become distracted by the audience of about 40 of his best Communication and Journalism students who sat quietly in a cluster of chairs positioned behind the cameras in the studio, facing the stage. It was pretty awesome! The stage contained two plush coral color sofa chairs where Paige and I sat across from each other and in the center of these two chairs was a sleek black, low table holding a vase of flowers and two coffee mugs—one for me and one for Paige but neither of us touched the mugs, we were too excited about the interview!

After the interview was over, Professor Thomas congratulated everyone on a job well done. Thank God this was not a live interview, so there was less pressure. Professor Thomas gathered the production team and his student audience and we all posed for photographs on the stage. Before leaving, I signed a copy of my book for two of the young women on the production team and delivered the books as a gift of gratitude for interviewing me and putting the TV show together. And the production team and Professor Thomas surprised me with a gift of gratitude—A bag filled of goodies such as a mug and a teddy bear with the Bowie State University emblem. I thought that was very sweet and thoughtful and left the campus with an even greater impression of BSU as an educational institution than I had before (and I already held the school in high regard prior to the interview).

My interview on the talk show will air on television in the state where it was recorded. But it will also be posted on YouTube sometime soon for the world to see! So I encourage you to view it and tell me what you think in the comment section.

I am so thankful to God for these continued blessings—it looks like He’s bringing it all together for my good (Romans 8:28)! I pray the same for you—that God will bring whatever situation or issues you’re facing in life all together for your good which simply means God will work it out because He has your best interest in His divine heart!

God bless you!

Love,

Alexis

Thankful Thursday: My first book

It’s Thursday and I am thankful for the publishing of my first book, Hope in My Heart: A Collection of Heartwarming Stories!

Words cannot describe the delight my heart and soul feels in finally completing my journey to become a published author!

Ever since I was a little girl, I DREAMED of this day and now it is here!

I don’t even know where to begin to share my sheer delight with you! But I will try by sharing a shorter version of my publishing journey:

My dream has always been to write books and so when I arrived in college, I dove head first toward developing my skills as a writer and to keep this story short, I will tell you that I prayed a lot about it and under God’s direction, studied Print Journalism. Soon I found that in addition to my creative writing pursuits, I wanted to become a journalist not only because I love listening to people and learning from their stories during the interview process but also because my second passion is photography and I love being able to capture life’s most memorable moments on camera. So I graduated with a degree in Print Journalism but did not land my dream job at a newspaper or magazine apart from a summer internship which did not end in me being hired.

My mom is an educator and after seeing my struggle, she suggested that I try substitute teaching because since I have a degree, they would pay me and I could stay financially afloat. So I faced my fears (thinking: “Manage a classroom of kids? All by myself?”) and absolutely fell in LOVE with the kids! So, after a year of working as a substitute teacher, I decided to become trained in teaching so I could be a teacher and a writer. I was exhilarated to be accepted into an alternative certification program which is geared to transition people who do not have a degree in Education, into the world of being a classroom teacher. And long story short, I failed. I loved the kids, the kids loved me and most of the parents applauded my work, but it just did not work out and so in June 2011, the door to education closed.

Now the backstory is that one day during the Spring Semester 2011, I was home sick and my dreams to become a published author were dancing in my head. So I decided to get out of bed, go to my computer and do some serious research on how to become a published author. And of course, I started off by looking up all of the big names in the publishing industry…Zondervan, Thomas Nelson, Harper Collins, etc. Somehow during this search--
looking back, I see it was God directing me--, I found a self-publishing company called Crossbooks which is, according to their website, "an imprint of B&H Publishing Group, the trade publishing division of LifeWay Christian Resources." It was my first introduction to my destiny. So I called and unlike all of the other big names in the industry, less than five minutes later, a representative from Crossbooks who we will call M, returned my call.

I poured my creative heart out to M, sharing my dream to be a published author of books that inspire people to know their true value, educate and point them to Jesus Christ. And I explained what I had been doing all day—trying to get in with the big names in the traditional publishing industry. M kindly explained to me that it’s tough for new authors to get into the traditional publishing industry because traditional publishers tend to only want people who are: already famous, best-selling authors of multiple books or have a blog following of over 1,000 people. Since I did not meet those standards, M suggested I take the self-publishing route to my dream. He also told me how Lifeway and B&H Publishing have big-name authors on their roster such as Beth Moore. Really? Beth Moore? I thought. Tell me no more, I’m in! And so I signed up for a publishing package with Crossbooks.

To keep this story short, the main challenge in my self-publishing journey was money because when you go this route, you have to finance the process as opposed to traditional publishing where they take care of all the costs for you. But the benefit with Crossbooks as a self-publishing company is they, as far as I know, offer all the services of a traditional publisher and you still get to keep the rights to your book. God made a way for me financially and at first, I thought my book would be published by Christmas 2011. But then I was advised by a well-known Christian author to make sure I have a book editor go through my book before I publish it instead of relying on my own editing skills because if I want my book to be taken seriously, I need to have it professionally edited.

God helped me find an excellent freelance editor named Sally whose special skill is in knowing how to edit an author’s book without removing their “voice” or messing with their writing style. God made a way for me to pay my editor and she sent my book back to me with all of the suggested edits. I was overwhelmed because she wanted for me to change entire scenes, character names, places and so much more of my book—okay not that much but at the time it seemed that way—and so I did not touch my manuscript for all of 2012.

So what changed between 2012 and now? Earlier this year (Winter 2013), I had a talk with one of my pastors and I shared my news that I was working on a book project. Before then, I had not told anyone outside of immediate family. And immediately, my pastor admonished me, “Alexis! Why didn’t you tell me before that you were working on a book project? THIS could be the book that puts you on the map! THIS could be the book that launches your dreams to be a professional writer! You need to get this finished!” And then he added, “A lot of times, we sit around waiting for God to move in our lives when God is waiting for US to MOVE!”

And so I moved! One weekend in March 2013, I sat at my computer and tackled the content edits to my book and surprisingly, finished it all during that weekend. And my project just started moving forward from there: I resubmitted my manuscript to my editor, she applauded my work and performed the copy/line edit and sent it back to me for proofreading; the three talented professionals whom I asked to write an endorsement for my book all read my manuscript and sent their endorsements to me in a timely manner; my preferred book designer, Brenda McClearen, created my DREAM cover for my book and my book went into the final stages of production with Crossbooks in August 2013.

And then by surprise, I found out on the evening of September 7, that my book had gone LIVE a few weeks earlier than I thought it would which was great news!

So here I am, a newly published author and I am so grateful to God for taking me on this journey and making a dream of my heart come true!

All I have to say to you now is, God is AWESOME! And my pastor was RIGHT, sometimes we are waiting for God to move but not doing anything about it on our end. So if you are in a similar place where I was—overwhelmed by the work required to make your dream come true—I challenge you to MOVE! Trust in God and go with it! If it’s meant for you as part of God’s plan for your life (Jeremiah 29:11), it WILL happen BUT you have to WORK for it and keep in tune with God through His gift to us, prayer.

I’d love for you to buy my book! It’s available on Amazon.com, Crossbooks.com, BarnesandNoble.com and you can also order it through my official website, alexisagoring.com!

Thank you for reading this testimony in its entirety! I hope and pray that God will make a way for you in whatever you may be going through and that God will bless you with your realizing that your GREATEST dream has already come true—you are LOVED, by GOD!

I encourage you to share your dreams with the One who loves you most (God) and to trust Him to, in His perfect timing, make it happen!

Love,

Alexis
